  • YouTube Launches Local Domain For Malaysia

Malaysia is rolling out the welcome mats for YouTube as the world’s preeminent online video service announced today that it’s creating a localized domain for Malaysia at www.youtube.com.my.

As YouTube explains in the announcement:

While YouTube has already been available in Malaysia’s most widely spoken languages — Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese, and English — having a Malaysia-specific homepage can now deliver the most relevant videos for Malaysians as well as make it easier to highlight great content from our local partners such as KRU Studios. If you’re in Malaysia, the site will automatically detect your location and send you to the Malaysia page. Anyone else interested in Malaysian content but outside the country can just as easily get to the homepage by just selecting “Malaysia” in the Location section at the bottom of the page.

While the new site unifies Malaysia’s thirteen states and three federal territories under one meme-tastic YouTube banner, it’s also a good opportunity to increase the exposure of artists and musicians. The launch event in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur was attended by several of Malaysia’s top musicians, some of whom you can see in the welcome video that GOOGLEMalaysia put together to welcome YouTube to the neighborhood:

Also, do you remember this Malaysian internet celebrity, the guy who proposed to his girlfriend with internet memes last year?

  • YouTube’s New Auto-Editing Tool Fixes Shakiness, Underexposure

There’s a lot amateur videos uploaded to YouTube that were probably great in concept but one giant avalanche of fail in execution. Whether the video is unbearably too dark or so shaky it induces motion-sickness in users, it doesn’t take a lot to ruin the quality of a video. And a video that’s unwatchable is a video that nobody watches.

Recognizing that the legions of YouTube uploaders could probably use a hand with their editing skills, so today they’ve launched an feature that will automatically fix videos that may be too shaky or dark. YouTube explained how it works in a blog post:

When you upload a video that could use a fixup, you’ll see a notification bar on the Upload page and in your Video Manager. Click the button to fix it, and you’ll see a side by side preview to decide if you want to accept the edits.

Select “Okay” if you’d like us to update your video to the preview version (you can always undo this later). Even if you’re uploading a video from your mobile device, the Video Manager on the desktop will give you a notice if this video can be cured as well.

YouTube also provided the animated video below:

Granted, this isn’t going to make your video of high school kids fighting in a school cafeteria look like that Inception hallway fight, it’ll at least compensate for what can be lousy conditions for recording video of an event.

  • My Damn Channel CEO Rob Barnett Talks New YouTube Channel, Live Programming

My Damn Channels has launched a new YouTube channel as part of the new YouTube original content rollout, along with a new live show called My Damn Channel Live. My Damn Channel Founder and CEO Rob Barnett (pictured here with writer/director/actor David Wain) tells WebProNews about the launch.

Already being the biggest video site on the web, it’s very possible that YouTube will become known as one of the first places people go to watch content on their TV, as more and more consumers get rid of cable/satellite. The early channels could one day be looked upon with a sense of historical significance, similar to how we now view he early cable channels.

“My Damn Channel LIVE is the first, daily, live comedy show from YouTube’s original channels, but we’re closing in on our 5th birthday and we first launched both on our site and on YouTube in 2007 , so our ‘history’ is already LONG in web years,” Barnett tells us. “The new live show feels similar to the early years of MTV but now technology hands us the possibility to create a new kind of television on the Internet.”

It [the new live programming] means our audience gets to have a ton more fun than ever before,” he says. “We want our viewers to be part of our programming in every human, social and technical way possible. Since the show is online, we can react and change on the fly with the audience driving our staff and our host Beth Hoyt to play with them.”

Hoyt will interview celebrity guests, interact with viewers in real-time and premiere videos from over 30 new My Damn Channel original comedy series. The show is live Monday through Friday from a new studio inside the company’s Hell’s Kitchen headquarters in New York.

On how the new channel is better than the old My Damn Channel, Barnett tells us, “My Damn Channel LIVE gives us the chance to deliver a ton of new original video to our site and our YouTube channel every day. We’ll have great celebrity guests every week including talent from our other favorite YouTube channels. And on every show, we’ll also be premiering new episodes from more than 30 new My Damn Channel original comedy series. Also, Daily Grace has been one of the best stars on My Damn Channel for years and we’re making a major announcement next week about Grace, My Damn Channel and YouTube.”

On what makes YouTube the ideal platform and separates it from other web video platforms, Barnett says, “We would not have launched our company as successfully back in ’07 without the backing of YouTube. Its platform, tech, size, and community give us the chance to paint a whole new picture about what TV can be.”

As a David Wain fan from way back (The State days), I had to ask Barnett how much David Wain we can expect from the new channel.

“As much as the law will allow,” he says. “We started My Damn Channel with episode #1 of Wainy Days and after 40 episodes, 5 years, 5 seasons we have no intention of stopping. David’s going to be one of our first special guests on our LIVE show and we’re going to announce a very cool promotion with David and Wainy Days for an event tied to the new Wainy Days DVD.”

  • The Real Mitt Romney: Rapping Romney Channels Eminem

Ok, let’s file this in the “this is really really good” department. And let’s not let politics get in the way of something so well done. I mean, seriously: how long do you think this took the guy who created it?

Alright, so today’s big viral homerun pokes fun at GOP Presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Sure, it makes fun of the fact that Romney has a reputation (in the minds of people from both parties, mind you) of having a problem keeping himself straight on the issues – mostly how he feels on particular issues day to day. But it’s not a campaign ad for Santorum, or Obama for that matter. Just a great video that’s currently hitting it big on YouTube.

The video, “Will The Real Mitt Romney Please Stand Up (feat. Eminem),” has a great cast of characters that includes his GOP rivals Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich as well as President Obama. Set to the tune of Eminem’s “The Real Slim Shady,” check out the real Mitt Romney calling out the other Mitt Romneys for just “mass debating”:

It kind of sounds like he accuses the other Mitt Romneys of doing something else, but nevermind.

Best sequences? I’d have to go with “My dog is on the roof. My dog is on the roof. Who let the dogs out? Who? Who?” or “Look I’m gonna get my lawn cut by illegals. There will be an influx. Hispanic voters in trucks. Look, if you don’t believe, I’ll tell you what, ten thousand bucks?”

I can’t quite see this being co-opted by the Obama campaign, I mean, it is a little scattered about. But if this kind of thing doesn’t show just how different election seasons in the viral age are from past election seasons, I don’t know what would.

Video creator Hugh Atkin seems to be enjoying the success of his video:

Thanks so much to everyone who has shared and commented on the video. The response has been amazing. Makes all of the hard work worthwhile.(image) 2 hours ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

  • Google’s Official YouTube Channel Reached 500 Million Views Over the Weekend

Over at Google, employees involved in YouTubing things are celebrating their milestone achievement of 500 million views on their official channel. Since the channel’s launch in 2007, Google fans have uploaded over 1,400 videos to the channel, left almost 500,000 comments, and have favorited videos on the channel over 200,000 times, says the company via a recent G+ post.

As part of the celebration, Google shared its first-ever video uploaded to the channel, Act One of a very low-fi Gmail promotional vid. It’s horribly campy, but kind of intriguing. I might even go so far as to say that it’s great despite being horrible, kind of like how Google itself is wonderful, despite being frighteningly, powerfully, secretly evil.

Oh, well. I’ll welcome my Google overlords when they finally decide to seize power overtly. They already own a remarkable portion of my brainspace (I just googled “Google” to get to the Google homepage). All I ask is that I keep getting nearly infinite online storage, free access to images and maps, and don’t ever have to find anything for myself again.

Pic related: Google knows more about my life than I do.

    Here’s the vid:

I’ll probably be checking out The Flog, The Guild, and The Dark Horse Motion Comics. The channel looks to offer a good variety of subject matter, with something to offer everyone interested. All the while, the Felicia Day brand continues to grow.

  • LulzSec May Be Getting The Band Back Together

LulzSec was a major ticket item last year as the group hacked a number of high profile Web sites all in the name of the “lulz.” After their so called “50 Day Cruise,” the group broke up and went their separate ways.

LulzSec has been a hot ticket item in the news again recently as many of its members had been arrested and its leader, Sabu, had been working with the FBI for months. In response to the betrayal and arrests, Anonymous began to attack various Web sites to prove they didn’t need LulzSec to be effective.

A YouTube video uploaded Saturday called “LulzSec Returns” points to the group getting back together. The video was uploaded by FawkesSecurity, a user who uploaded various other videos on Saturday. They all point to a single movement called Project Mayhem 2012.

A pastebin entry on the subject defines Project Mayhem as a movement to destabilize the status quo. It will be used to collect and distribute leaks on major governments and corporations. They want to make it an artistic-based, non-violent movement that works around the law to bring about social change.

Where does LulzSec fit into all of this? I’m not sure, but the video announcing its return says that they will be hacking governments, corporations and everything else. It fits right into the core mission of Project Mayhem, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

Some members within Anonymous question the validity of the video. They are saying it’s a rip-off or a copycat group. That’s entirely possible, but if they can pull off the same level of hacks that LulzSec did last summer then it might be worth keeping an eye on.

There’s also been a Twitter account created called LulzSec Reborn. I’m sure that many Anonymous members are not so trustworthy anymore after the betrayal of Sabu. After all, this could be a second FBI sting. We just don’t know.

Here’s the video. It’s up to you to decide whether or not LulzSec is back or if this is just a rip-off, copycat or even a new FBI sting. I’m sure more will be revealed in the coming days.

  • comScore February 2012 Online Video Rankings Yields Some Surprises

comScore has released their rankings of online video sites for February 2012 and, though I know this will come as a shock to most of you, Google was once again the top-ranked video site. Walking with the heavy thud of its well-worn YouTube boots, Google’s numbers remained high in spite of taking a slight decline from January’s rankings. However, the overall numbers of total unique viewers, videos, and minutes watched per viewer were all lower in February. More peculiar than Google’s slight drop is Yahoo adding over 10,000,000 unique viewers from last month, jumping all the way up to the second-highest ranked online video site. Also, last month I speculated whether Amazon’s just-announced partnership with Viacom would boost the site’s then-ninth ranking but, instead, it’s disappeared completely from the top ten content properties for February. I now hesitate to speculate on whether Amazon’s new deal with Discovery Communications will do anything to improve its rankings so, well, let’s just wait until next month to find out if it has an impact.

In terms of online video ad properties, someone told Google that there was one aspect of the internet that they weren’t dominating and so they decided to start remedying that problem this month. Nowhere among the top ten top U.S. ad properties last month, Google surged forth to claim the second spot on this month’s list. comScore explains the drastic jump, “Google Sites’ video ad data includes a sizable increase vs. previous months due to the recent inclusion of certain YouTube ad formats in our reporting. Any changes vs. previous months should not be treated as organic growth. In addition, Google Sites’ video ad data currently does not include promoted videos on YouTube or homepage ads.”

Even with this appearance of Google towards the top of the list, Hulu added over 100,000,000 more ad views in February, which was a a record-high number of video ad impressions. Doesn’t look like they’ll be relinquishing their number one spot easily.

Among YouTube partner channels, the Warner Bros.’ channel associated with The Ellen Show landed at the sixth highest ranked channel after not even appearing on the list in the earlier two months of 2012. Most of that attention may be owed to the last month’s controversy after JCPenney’s partnership with Ellen Degeneres became the target of a planned boycott by a bunch of “pro-family” activist-trolls, One Million Moms, who took to Facebook in order to pressure the retailer to drop Degeneres as a spokesperson. Facebook supporters of Degeneres, however, turned out in force and ultimately dwarfed the number of One Million Moms, eventually turned back the anti-Ellen boycott. While it’s hard to conclusively argue that the social media flare-up resulted in The Ellen Show’s YouTube channel getting that much of an increase in traffic, what else could it possibly have been that boosted it out of nowhere?

Did you know: the average online video was 6:12 long where the average online video ad was less than 0:30 long. Television broadcasters are limited to a maximum of 12 minutes of ads per hour. As much as those ads leading YouTube videos, just keep in mind that, while it’s inconvenient, it’s not quite as much as you’d be seeing if you were watching TV.

  • YouTube Now Available in Chile!!!!

YouTube is now available in Chile through YouTube.cl. It is the fifth country in Latin America and joins Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico. Over 40 countries now have a local version of YouTube. This great news for residents of Chile who have had to go without this valuable Google social utility.

Having a local version of the service allows users to follow trends and dial in more relevant content easier. As with any culture their are trends that are unique to the area. A particular YouTube video series that has grown in popularity already in Chile is called Puntaje Nacional, and it prepares student to get into college.

Another show which is popular is called Soy German and it features ironic humor. Sounds good to me, I think everyone can enjoy YouTube and it has proven to be a wonderful educational tool. I was surprised to hear that Chile did not yet have the service. I assumed that anybody who had an internet connection could enjoy it. Good new for Chile!

One thing I did notice as I clicked on some of their video links to check out their shows, there was no share button to embed their videos. I wanted to share the content with our readers. Anyway, you guys can click the links and check them out yourself, it’s interesting, I liked Soy German. Enjoy!

  • Darth Vader YouTube Video: 10 Hours of Breathing

YouTube user Murdock129 decided to create a ten hour video of Darth Vader’s “mechano-asthmatic wheezing.” It sounds more like a morbidly obese person going up and down the steel stairs of a submarine while smoking a stogy.

Perhaps this clip should be studied by Neuro-acoustic researchers and added as a track to sound therapy systems.

Listen to the dark chesty sounds of an upper respiratory infection as you drift away imagining that you are marching the galleys of the Death Star. Ooh, what an empowering feeling.

But YouTube user, DarkAztec, said that he watched the video last night, thinking it would be great to fall asleep to. Turns out he woke up in the middle of the night: “I hear?d the *PUF-KTCH* noise, it just made me terribly frightened of someone being in the room. I panicked, swinging wild hay-makers and [fell] of the bed on top of [my] nightstand. My roommate rushed in to see what the noise was and there I [was], knocked out on the floor, my stuff everywhere, and Darth’s asthmatic voice going.”

Unfortunately, DarkAztec sleeps in the nude. Yikes! I wouldn’t want to be his roommate.

    (image)

DarkAztec gave the video two thumbs down, others commented:

“This video? has a better plot and deeper character development that The Phantom Menace.”

“Had to pause it when i went? to the bathroom. Don’t want to miss anything.”

“At first it was soothing, but now it’s like a cheese? grater on my brain.”

“The longest recorded orgasm in history.”

“What if, I download video, save to my boss’s laptop, play it super low? and just sit back and watch him go nuts?”
    ?

  • Indian TV Shows Are Taking Over YouTube

Polish your dance shoes and put on your fighting mitts, YouTubers, because the online video site announced today that its updated the Shows page so as to include over 19,000 episodes of various Indian television shows. That may sound like a staggering, even unbelievable number but when you consider the fact that shows like Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah have over 800 episodes (beat that, Law & Order), those start to stack up and before you know it – pow – you’re sitting atop a stack of 19,000 episodes of Indian television just waiting to be watched.

The shows cross six different languages – Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Gujati, and Punjabi – can be found in the Shows tab. Simply click that tab, then open the drop down menu to and then select Other Languages. The first option you’ll see is Hindi, you can follow and explore the whole world of Hindi television. It may seem like a lot at first, so here’s a primer to get you going with a couple of shows. First, here’s the first episode of Bade Acche Laggte Hai. It’s the story of two strangers getting married who surprise themselves by also falling for each other. Charming, yeah?

Here’s a show in Telugu, Seethamma Maayamma, that follows a woman named Seetha who seeks to create a treatise between two feuding villages. It so happens that the villages are feuding because Seetha’s mother is from one village and her father is from another, which, as you can imagine, complicates things a bit.

Last, here comes a show in Gujarati called Avtaran, which is described as: “A couple tries to save the marriage at all costs. They have a son Hardik. Not able to reconcile their differences they separate. Years later Hardik is stricken with a mysterious ailment. The only cure for this is for the couple to come together again and create a new life a child. A new life that could save an older one. Will this avtaar come to earth. Can Hardik be saved. See this electrifying drama.” If you want a low-level committment, Avatran only has 12 episodes so you can warm up on that one and then decide if you’re ambitious enough for the towering collection of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah episodes.

Of course, you can watch shows in other languages, like English since I presume you’re actually reading these words and not just scribbling with a marker on the screen of your tablet or computer.

  • YouTube Does the Cinnamon Challenge

    YouTube Does the Cinnamon Challenge

“I triple-dog dare you!” We all remember this famous line from a Christmas Story. Kids have been daring each other to do stupid stuff since the beginning of time, from sticking your tongue on a cold metal post, to eating a stack of saltines without water.

The latest craze, swallowing a tbs. of cinnamon without water, has hit YouTube in full force. The site contains over 30,000 videos with the tag, and millions of views for the more popular ones.

It is basically impossible, there is not enough saliva in the human mouth to absorb the cinnamon, and it gets stuck in the mouth and throat, causing people to blow out a big puff of cinnamon cloud, then gag on the rest thats stuck to the lining of their esophagus.

The reaction is what people find so amusing. Almost no one can do it, and people find it funny to watch them spew out dry cinnamon when they try, in the same way its funny to watch someone get hit in the groin on America’s Funniest Home videos. Participants are simply looking to get views on their video for their absurd reaction.

The problem is that you can become seriously injured trying this stunt. There have been cases of people suffering from a collapsed lung from coughing so violently. The cinnamon can cause lung scarring and inflammation if inhaled. Some have even been hospitalized with pneumonia like symptoms after attempting the feat.

This kid actually does it, and then some.

Some other notable challenges involving food include eating a whole bar of cocao, a whole pack of warheads, a whole gallon of milk, 50 hardboiled eggs…

These challenges combine some or all of them. This is highly dangerous. Please don’t do this. In fact, don’t even watch this…

  • YouTube Decoy Targets Syrian Activists With Malware

Syrian activists, beware: in addition to avoiding arrest and murder, now the Syrian government is trying to attack activists with a fake YouTube site that’s infecting Windows machines with malware. The YouTube decoy attempted to get Syrian activists to visit by hosting videos related to the opposition movement but, really, it’s like a small bulb dangling from the antena of an angler fish.

Once users have visited the page, they’re asked for their YouTube log-in info in order to leave comments but in addition from sponging up your personal account info, it installs some nasty malware disguised as an update to Adobe Flash Player. It should also be noted with much gravity that if you did enter your YouTube log-in on this page, you just handed over the keys to your Google account and all services associated therein. Doubleplusungood.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation provided the following screenshot of the Fakey YouTube. Although the decoy site has already been taken down, the EFF advises people to be on the lookout for similar traps.

I’ve included below some closer screen captures of pertinent regions of the webpage. I know it’s easy to slip into the habit of assuming that the site you’re visiting is the same old website you’ve always visited, but typosquatting is a growing problem and now that authoritarian governments are taking a page out of scummy internet scammers, it’s all the more important to double-check the URL of the website whenever you visit it, especially if you detect that something is the slightest bit awry or unfamiliar.

(Just a note: if you ever end up at a site with the word “wankbook” in the URL and you aren’t actively trying to visit a site with the word “wankbook” in the URL or title, you should probably leave that site. For many reasons.)

Additionally, if you’re ever asked to install software, be mindful of the request and verify that you aren’t on a malicious site waiting to infect your computer with some nasty malware.

This low-blow from the Syrian government isn’t only a means to prevent members of the opposition from broadcasting and finding updates about what’s happening in the country via YouTube, but it’s doubly evil because it’s siphoning users information while also punishing them with computer-crippling malware.

The following are instructions from the EFF’s website find out if you may have been infected by the malware.

To see if you have been infected, look for the following files:

These files are “system files” and will not be visible by default. To change your settings to make system files visible in Windows 7, Start–>Control Panel–>Appearance and Personalization–>Show hidden files and folders, then select the radio button called Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives. Remove the checkbox labeled “Hide extensions for known file types.” Remove the checkbox labeled “Hide protected operating system files.”

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\sysglobl.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\mscordbc.exe

On Windows 7 systems, you can find them here:

    C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\sysglobl.exe
    C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\mscordbc.exe

If you have definitely been infected, though, you may be left with one really inconvenient choice in order to purge your computer of the malware: re-install Windows. If anybody has happened across similar malware sites like the Syrian government’s YouTube fake-out, feel free to share info in the comments below to let others know what to watch out for.

  • YouTube Gets Google+ Synchronization

The Google consolidation era is continuing with full force as their latest announcement sees a marriage of Google+ accounts with YouTube. While it’s not quite a synchronization process–this feature appears to be voluntary–the goal is the same. Like it or not, Google is actively building profiles of their users, and consolidating the accounts for their various services only simplifies the process.

If you don’t like Google’s strategy, you can always use Bing, but if you think Google is the only service building profiles of their members, you’re being foolish. Just ask AT&T what they do with all that location data they collect from their mobile phone subscribers. As for the YouTube/Google+ account synchronization process, you get the feeling something like this was in Google’s plans all along while they were creating Google+.

The YouTube blog has the details:

…today we’re adding a feature that lets you sign up for a new YouTube channel using your existing Google+ profile. You can now use your Google+ profile name and photo on a new YouTube channel, giving you one consistent identity across platforms when uploading videos, sharing, commenting and other public activities.

It should be noted that users are not required to link their accounts, something the blog post is quite adamant about:

If you want to create a YouTube channel that’s different from your Google+ profile (e.g. “KatnissForPresident”), click “Create a username,” and you’ll have the option to create a YouTube channel as usual.

With that in mind, is this Google being evil or just offering users a way to streamline their online activities? Let us know what you think. Since we’re talking about Google+ and watching videos on YouTube, something Google proudly says is available already to Google+ members when using the “Hangout” feature, the following commercial seems somewhat appropriate:

  • YouTube Now Recommends Videos Based On Engagement, Not Just Clicks

How many times have you finished watching a YouTube video, then clicked on a suggested video only to end up watching something that doesn’t interest you at all. YouTube is hoping to cut down on this scenario with a change to how they select these videos.

Starting today, YouTube’s algorithm for determining what videos appear on your suggested or recommended sections is morphing. Instead of picking these videos according to view count only, YouTube will now populate this suggestions section based on time spent viewing each video as well.

Here’s the reasoning behind this, courtesy of the Official YouTube Partners and Creators blog:

The last time you went channel surfing, did you enjoy (or remember) the 20 TV shows you flipped through, or just the shows you watched all the way through? Would you recommend the 20 you surfed through to a friend, or the ones you actually watched? To make the videos you watch on YouTube more enjoyable, memorable, and sharable, we’re updating our Related and Recommended videos to better serve videos that keep viewers entertained.

This makes sense. How engaged with a video the average user is should determine whether it is passed along as a recommended video a particular user. Another, possibly more important point of this move is to cut back on people gaming the system. YouTube elaborates on the YouTube Help site

Previously, the YouTube algorithm suggested videos (whether related videos on the watch page or recommended videos elsewhere on the site) based on how many people clicked to watch a video. This was a helpful way to promote channels, but issues like misleading thumbnails kept this system from bringing videos with deeper engagement to the top. Starting March 14th 2012, the algorithm for suggesting videos will also be based on which videos contribute to a longer overall viewing session rather than how many clicks an individual video receives. This is great for viewers because they’ll be able to watch more enjoyable content; moreover, this is great for creators because it can help build more focused and engaged audiences.

They mention “misleading thumbnails,” which is specification of a number of techniques creators use to boost the views on their particular videos. One of the most prominent examples is the “reply girl.” Users (usually female) will upload their videos as replies to popular YouTube videos, and most of the time show something sexually suggestive or otherwise unrelated image as the thumbnail in order to draw clicks.

Basically, what YouTube is saying here is you have to make your content relevant and it has to be something that people want to watch. If a user clicks your video and only stays for a few seconds because it doesn’t satisfy what they were looking for, you’re going to have a harder time making it to the recommended and suggested video sections.

“How can you adapt to these changes?” they say. “The same as you always have — create great videos that keep people engaged. It doesn’t matter whether your videos are one minute or one hour. What matters is that your audience stops clicking away and starts watching more of your videos.”

  • Huge Shark Feeding Frenzy Filmed!

Shark feeding frenzies happen all the time. You just normally don’t see one of this size caught on camera.

Fifty to sixty sharks, mostly blacktip and bronze whalers, were filmed by a helicopter off the coast of Perth, Australia. Apparently, baitfish were being fed upon by tuna. The baitfish had massed up into balls to protect themselves, but the whole mass of baitfish and tuna attracted the attention of nearby sharks. Normally, these sharks do not “school”, but hunt alone. Nevertheless, a free meal like this was too tough to pass up. Even a huge flock of birds joined the sushi buffet.

Nearby Yanchep beach was closed temporarily, just in case. But, most of the sharks in this frenzy were normally not of concern to humans.

On a separate note, “Feeding Frenzy” was a great live album by Jimmy Buffett. This is not from that.

  • Kony 2012 Screening In Uganda Elicits Strong Criticism

Unless you’ve been under one mighty huge rock lately, the words Kony 2012 probably engender some sort of feeling deep inside you. Whether it’s disgust at the actions of Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony, or skepticism about the movement’s tactics and concerns about “slacktivism,” you probably have something to say on the topic.

And people’s opinions have been shared, to an almost unprecedented degree. Everyone from your friends on Facebook, to celebrities on Twitter, to talking heads on the cable news channels have put in their two cents about the social movement. The video, created by the Invisible Children group, is approaching 80 million views on YouTube – a staggering number.

But what about Ugandans? What do they have to say about the Kony 2012 movement? According to a report from Al Jazeera, many of them aren’t too pleased with the video’s focus.

The African Youth Initiative Network (AYINET), an African non-governmental organization, decided to screen the Kony 2012 film to some remote areas of Northern Uganda.

“It’s our commitment to bring the world to the victims’ communities, and the victims’ communities to the world,” said AYINET Director Victor Ochen.

AYINET planned that “the screening will continue throughout March in remote areas of northern Uganda to inform people about the film and the realities of what is happening nationally, regionally and internationally on the issues raised.”

Over 35,000 people attended the first screening and apparently, it didn’t go too well. This video, now going viral, shows many Ugandans reacting with frustration and eventual anger over the Kony 2012 video. AYINET’s first screening of the film ended in rock-throwing, if that tells you anything. Check it out below:

As you can see, they weren’t too thrilled with the commercialization of their plight:

The audience was at first puzzled to see the narrative lead by an American man – Jason Russell – and his young son.

Towards the end of the film, the mood turned more to anger at what many people saw as a foreign, inaccurate account that belittled and commercialised their suffering, as the film promotes Kony bracelets and other fundraising merchandise, with the aim of making Kony infamous.

One woman I spoke to made the comparison of selling Osama Bin Laden paraphernalia post 9/11 – likely to be highly offensive to many Americans, however well intentioned the campaign behind it.

On the heels of this incident, AYINET has decided to suspend their future planned screenings of the film in Uganda. You can check out their release below, which highlights some of the more prominent responses for angry Ugandans.

“Why give such criminals celebrity status?” one person asked. It definitely is a fine line between awareness and creating a celebrity – albeit for horrible reasons. From this, we see that the first film reviews from the Ugandans themselves are in – and Kony 2012 gets a two thumbs down.

If for some reason you haven’t seen the Kony 2012 video that’s causing all the fuss, you can watch it in its entirety below:

What do you think about the Kony 2012 film and social movement? Let us know in the comments.

  • Billboard Adding Digital Music Services To Chart

Billboard Adding Digital Music Services To Chart

There is no doubt that digital music streaming is here to stay. In fact, there’s been no doubt for a couple of years now. Services like Spotify, Rhapsody, Pandora, and more draw millions of users who find digital streaming a better alternative to listening to traditional radio stations.

Now it looks like Billboard is finally catching up to the digital music age. The magazine’s editorial director, Bill Werde, told the Wall Street Journal yesterday that Billboard’s song charts would start including certain digital music services in the data it uses to compile the charts. Charts are usually compiled based on radio plays and digital downloads. Digital music streaming risen significantly in recent months, and Werde said that it has “recently hit a critical mass,” prompting Billboard to start including it as a basis for their charts.

A total of six services are being incorporated into Billboard’s chart data: Spotify, Rhapsody, Rdio, MOG, Muve Music, and Slacker Radio. Notably absent from the list are Pandora and YouTube.

Are you glad Billboard is including streaming data? Should they have made this move before now? Are there any services you think they should add that aren’t on the list? Let us know in the comments.

  • Rush Limbaugh Admits Apology Faked [spoof]

The following is a spoof. It is not real. It was put together with bits and pieces of Limbaugh comments from multiple shows. The sole purpose of including it here is to show that one can make a person sound like they support any number of stances if you just slice and dice what they say.

Rush Limbaugh did issue an apology for his remarks about “Susan” [sic] Fluke. Since then, he has even removed the transcript of those remarks from his website, erasing them from his official record forever.

Even still, he is facing an advertiser backlash like he has never had before. He claims it’s no big deal. And, he has loads of supporters behind him. But, he is also facing a challenge to his radio supremacy from Mike Huckabee, who wants to have a more civil discourse.

Enjoy this fake confession. It’s fake.
