  • A ‘Selfie’ TV Show Is on the Way Because #YOLOSWAG

Are you a person who thinks that weekday nights are sorely lacking in bathroom mirror shots? If so, ABC may just have the perfect pilot for you.

The network has ordered a pilot for a new series simply titled “Selfie.” The new comedy comes from writer Emily Kapnek, who is best-known for her work on ABC’s Suburgatory, now in its third season.

Here’s the show’s synopsis, via Entertainment Weekly:

Comedy inspired by My Fair Lady tells the story of a self-obsessed 20-something woman who is more concerned with ‘likes’ than being liked. After suffering a very public and humiliating breakup, she becomes the subject of a viral video and suddenly has more social media ‘followers’ than she ever imagined – but for all the wrong reasons. She enlists the help of a marketing expert at her company to help repair her tarnished image.

Ok, well, “Selfie” is the reigning word of the year – at least according to Oxford. Described as “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website,” Selfie beat out Twerk, Bitcoin, and Derp to win the title of 2013’s top new word.

It’s hard to judge a new TV show before it even airs, so I won’t. I will say that a quick Twitter or Instagram search for #selfie reveals that, if nothing else, people are still snapping photos of themselves with great fervor.

  • The Bureau: XCOM Declassified Gets a Bro-tastic YOLO Trailer

There comes a time in the marketing of every video game when a publisher must target a certain type of gamer. Whether the game is story-heavy or focuses on extremely strategical gameplay, the marketing teams for major publishers must put together at least one trailer emphasizing all of the brutal action and explosions contained within the game.

Today, 2K Games released that trailer for the upcoming The Bureau: XCOM Declassified. Sort of.

The trailer does feature plenty of gunfire, explosions, and death. However, it does so in the service of a parody. Titled “#YOLO,” the trailer features the main character of The Bureau throwing his squad mates recklessly into battle. The computer-controlled characters dutifully obey, running straight into alien blaster fire while screaming, “YOLO.” In a ham-handed way, the video is meant to highlight the game feature of permanent death for player squad mates.

2K has also recently released a developer diary focusing on the story in The Bureau. Whether you thought the YOLO trailer was funny or a travesty, the dev diary can serve as a more laid-back, informative palate cleanser:

  • SNL YOLO Video Receives Twitter’s Approval [Video]

It seems that one of many recipes for viral success these days is to play off of an already viral phenomenon. Of course, it helps if you have the broadcasting power that comes with that of Saturday Night Live. This past weekend’s show was hosted by Adam Levine, who participated in one of the classic-to-some digital shorts.

The video would be YOLO, and features, in addition to Levine, comedy troupe The Lonely Island (which includes SNL vet Andy Samberg) and rapper Kendrick Lamar:

The video has the web abuzz here on Monday morning, and people all over Twitter are talking about how hilarious it is.

  • Drake Calls Out Macy’s For Using “The Motto”

Drake may have made the term “YOLO” infamous in the past year or so, but he doesn’t claim sole ownership to the term, despite what he tweeted earlier this week.

“Walgreens…you gotta either chill or cut the cheque,” he wrote beneath an Instagram photo of a hat display at the drugstore. He also chastised Macy’s for using the word on several Charlie Brown and Snoopy shirts.

The singer hasn’t elaborated on what he’s willing to do for the motto, but he’ll have a hard time claiming it belongs to him if he pursues the issue with the companies.

  • Drunk Guy Tweets YOLO Moments Before Fatal Car Wreck

    Words. Words sometimes fail you.

In a twist of tragic irony, a 21-year-old Ontario, CA man was involved in a brutal car wreck just moments after tweeting the popular catchphrase YOLO. If you’re unfamiliar with YOLO, it’s that super annoying thing the kids are saying, oftentimes used to justify poor decisions, which translates to “You Only Live Once.”

Five men were killed in the crash, after their 2005 Nissan Sentra blew through a red light and smashed into a wall. Four were pronounced dead at the scene, and the fifth was taken to the hospital where he later died. Police are saying that there is a high likelihood that alcohol played a factor.

They began working under that assumption largely because of tweets belonging to Ervin McKinness, one of the victims. Although he was not driving the vehicle, according to police, he was giving a pretty clear play-by-play of the situation on Twitter.

    First, this tweet:

And soon after, this tweet which stands as his final tweet before the crash:

By most accounts, McKinness was a decent guy who obviously made a really stupid decision or two. YOLO, kids. Seriously – you get one shot. Don’t go out like this.
