  • Yahoo Mail Adds GIF, Google Drive, Dropbox Access

Yahoo Mail Adds GIF, Google Drive, Dropbox Access

Yahoo announced two updates for the Yahoo Mail app, which the company says makes “sending compelling, creative emails” easier. These include access to files from Google Drive and Dropbox and the ability to add GIFs from Tumblr into your email.

“With these updates, you can quickly send spring break photos, that important presentation, the perfect GIF that describes your excitement, and more,” a spokesperson for Yahoo tells WebProNews.

“We not only display the most popular GIFs of the moment, but you can also select from categories including Love, LOL, Cute, Cheers, Fail, Happy, or search for the perfect GIF. Tap on the GIF or GIFs you like and they will be added into your email,” the company adds.

When you tap on the cloud icon in compose, you’ll be able to connect your Google Drive or Dropbox account and access your files.

Other updates are the ability to preview large files instantly, delete drafts right away, and three Android home screen widgets.

Earlier this week, Yahoo announced the ability to sync and match mobile contacts instantly in Yahoo Messenger so you can find and chat with friends faster. Messenger also now supports non-English languages for the first time. Support includes Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Spanish, and more.

  • Yahoo Mail Gets Enhanced Link Previews

Yahoo Mail Gets Enhanced Link Previews

Yahoo Mail announced new enhanced link previews that a spokesperson for Yahoo says “transform the typical blue link into a visual, informative card that gives email recipients a snapshot of the content right in their email.”

“With link previews, you can now play video and audio right in the email, and share the link directly to your social networks,” they said. “We’ve also improved the underlying technology to produce a richer preview with price, movie title, article author and more.”

With the new previews, you can control the size and location to select where the preview fits best in the email (inline with text or at the bottom).

Any link preview you receive in an email can be shared on Tumblr, Facebook, and Twitter with the share button at the top of the preview image.

Yahoo talks about the new previews in a blog post here.

Last week, Yahoo announced that people can now sign up for a new Yahoo Mail account using an existing email address and without having to create a new Yahoo address.

  • You Can Now Get A Yahoo Account With Any Email Address

You Can Now Get A Yahoo Account With Any Email Address

Yahoo announced that you can now sign up for a new Yahoo Mail account without having to create a new Yahoo email address. You can use your existing Gmail, Outlook, or any other non-Yahoo email address to create a new Yahoo account.

This follows a move a year ago by Google, which finally started supporting accounts from other providers like Yahoo and Microsoft.

With Yahoo’s update, users can use their Yahoo account for Yahoo Fantasy Sports, Finance, Sports, Messenger, etc.

“We want to make it as delightful as possible for users to sign up, sign in, and stay signed in because this lets us deliver the best possible experience. Starting with Yahoo Fantasy Sports, like Tourney Pick’em, we’ve upped the ante with this new registration experience and will roll this into other Yahoo products soon.”

Separately Yahoo announced some new features for Yahoo Mail on iOS including new themes and 3D gestures.

  • Yahoo Mail Mobile Apps Get New Features

Yahoo just made a couple of Yahoo Mail announcements. The iOS app is getting new customizable swipes and a recent attachments feature. The Android app is getting the swipes and new actionable notifications.

Here’s what Yahoo says about new swipes for iOS (you can see the explanation for Android here):

Swipes are one of the fastest ways people clean up their inbox. However, everyone uses email and actions differently. Now you can personalize your swipes with your favorite actions, including “star,” “move to folder” and “archive” (if you have multiple mailboxes) to help you save time. Just open your “Settings” and choose “Swipe actions.”

On iOS, when you compose an email, you can now see all recently received photos and file attachments with a search bar to find what you’re looking for. Also, new is the ability to create, delete and rename folders and subfolders, which was only available on desktop before.

You can also now star and mark emails as spam when you multi-select emails. This is also available on Android.

Also on Android, you can now take action on incoming emails from the notification.

  • Yahoo Relaunches Yahoo Messenger With Redesign, New Features

Yahoo just announced a new version of Yahoo Messenger, which features a complete redesign of the platform across iOS, Android, and the web as well as within Yahoo Mail.

“The new Yahoo Messenger provides a super fast, beautiful and smart way to send messages, photos and animated GIFS in 1:1 and group conversations,” a spokesperson for Yahoo tells WebProNews.

The new Messenger lets users search for and send GIFs from the app (powered by Tumblr), share as many as hundreds of photos in a message, instantly, and in high resolution. This is powered by Flickr’s photo platform, and photos are displayed in a horizontal scrolling carousel.

Users can also “like” photos, messages, or GIFs that are shared.

Another helpful feature is that you can take messages, photos, or GIFs back even after they’ve been sent. Good for “late night” messaging.

“We’re excited to introduce the next generation of Yahoo Messenger. It has long been one of our core products but it was time to redesign the product from the ground up and reinvest in one of the most important products in our history as a company,” said Jeff Bonforte, senior vice president of communication products and engineering at Yahoo. “The messaging space has grown dramatically, yet people ultimately want a fast and easy way to communicate with each other. The new Yahoo Messenger was designed first and foremost to meet those needs. This is just the beginning of what’s to come.”

The new Yahoo Messenger is available globally starting today. It’s in the process of rolling out. For now, it’s just in English, but will expand to additional languages soon.

  • Yahoo Mail Also Lets You Block Senders, Adds Desktop Alerts

Yahoo Mail Also Lets You Block Senders, Adds Desktop Alerts

Last week, Google announced the addition of address blocking to Gmail. Yahoo appears to be following suit, announcing that Yahoo Mail also now allows you to block people from your inbox.

In Yahoo Mail, users will be able to find “Block” under the “More” drop-down menu when you’re in the inbox or have an email open. From there, you can block future emails from the selected sender and automatically delete all existing emails from that sender. This saves you the hassle of manually searching and deleting.

Users can also block multiple email addresses simultaneously. After you make a selection, you’ll see a confirmation notification with an undo option.

Yahoo also announced new desktop notifications for Yahoo Mail that alert you of new messages when you’re not in your inbox, as long as you have it open in a tab. It includes a photo of the contact if available.

While Firefox is pictured (and believe me, Yahoo really wants you to use Firefox), Chrome and Safari are also supported by this feature. No extensions are required.

The notifications can be enabled by going to Yahoo Mail settings and checking the box for “enable desktop notifications”.

  • Yahoo Mail Gives You New Way To View Attachments

Yahoo announced the launch of a new Yahoo Mail feature that gives users a different way to look at attachments. The company says it solves the hassle of having to switch back and forth between writing emails and referencing attachments.

When the user clicks on an attachment, it will display a side-by-side preview allowing them to read their message or compose a reply while simultaneously viewing the attachment.

“New technology under-the-hood also means that previews of attachments, including PDFs and Microsoft Office files, are lightning fast,” a spokesperson for Yahoo tells WebProNews. “Some of the core technology is powered by Bookpad, a Yahoo acquisition from last year.”

Senior product manager Mayukh Bhaowal says in a blog post, “Previews of attachments in Yahoo Mail has been growing at a fast pace and engagement is off the charts. We love it when our users find value in our features. In the meantime, the industry around document sharing and collaboration has also been growing rapidly. In the fall of last year, we acquired Bookpad (a company working on document previewing and collaboration technology) to build some of the new technology behind Yahoo Mail attachment preview and collaboration. We think there will be a time in the near future where you’ll have all the tools you need in mail, without having to ever download an attachment.”

Last week, Yahoo announced the launch of a new Yahoo Mail app for Windows 10.

  • There’s A New Yahoo Mail App For Windows Users

There’s A New Yahoo Mail App For Windows Users

Yahoo announced the launch of a new Yahoo Mail app for Windows 10, which is now available in the Windows Store.

The app includes real-time notifications, and lets you see snippets of your latest messages with Live Tile.

“There are three new ways to check to see if you have new messages. On the lock screen, a count of new messages will appear so you can see if you need to even sign in to your computer,” explains Yahoo Mail director of product management Josh Jacobson. “In the Start Menu, a Live Tile is available that shows you snippets of the latest new email (Just ‘pin’ the Yahoo Mail app to the Start Menu to enable the Live Tile). And as you use your computer throughout the day, desktop notifications will appear to alert you of any new messages. All of these can be controlled in the Windows Settings.”

“Of course, being a Windows app, it’s now super easy to also access your Yahoo Mail from the taskbar or via the popular ‘alt-tab’ shortcut,” Jacobson adds. “And you always have the option to set Yahoo Mail as your default app for sending new mails any time you click an email address from the web or other apps. All of these features are available for any Windows 10 tablet or desktop computer, including the Microsoft Surface.”

    Yahoo Mail Windows

Yahoo recently added package and event notifications at the top of the inbox, so for example, if Amazon sends you an order email, you’ll see a package notification with shortcuts to shipment tracking and the original email for your order. More on that here.

Yahoo Mail Gets New Package And Event Notifications

Yahoo announced that it now includes new package and event notifications at the top of the Yahoo Mail inbox for easier viewing. For example, if Amazon sends you an order email, you’ll see a package notification with shortcuts to shipment tracking and the original email for your order.

    yahoomail1

“For upcoming events from sites such as Eventbrite, Fandango, Ticketmaster and others, Yahoo Mail shows you a snapshot of the event details and a quick link to the original invite and directions,” Yahoo says in a blog post. “Once you’ve read the event or package notification, you can simply dismiss it.”

    yahoomail2

“With our new package and event reminders, Yahoo Mail now does the work for you!” it says. “No need to search through emails to see when your package will be delivered or find the address for today’s birthday party.”

The new stuff is rolling out in the U.S. over the next couple days. Yahoo says it will also expand on the types of notifications it shows users.

  • Yahoo Mail Makes It Easier To Add Images, Files & Links To Messages

Google isn’t the only one that announced some email improvements on Thursday. Yahoo announced a new feature for when Yahoo Mail users are composing a message that makes it easier to find and add photos, files, GIFs, or links to their messages.

“The new compose experience is simple and fun to use — simply click on the new + icon in the Yahoo Mail compose window, select from four different types of content (photos, files, gifs, or web links) click or drag-and-drop to add to your email, and you’re done! Voilà – a more beautiful and personal email,” a Yahoo spokesperson explains in an email.

You can view photos that you’ve sent or received in Yahoo Mail sorted by date, with the most recent ones at the top or you can search for photos from the web or Yahoo’s Flickr.

You can see files that you’ve sent or received sorted by date or look for a specific one by searching by person or keyword.

For GIFs, Yahoo includes search suggestions, but you can search from GIFs across the web and Tumblr. There’s also a preview for photos and GIFs when you hover over the image.

“Reference a website without having to leave Yahoo Mail by searching for the restaurant, hotel, movie, etc. right within the panel,” Yahoo says. “The link will appear in your email with an informative link preview.”

After you find what you want to add to your message, just click or drag/drop.

The feature is rolling out to Yahoo Mail users across the U.S. over the coming days along with speed and performance improvements.

  • Yahoo Is Shutting Some More Things Down

Yahoo announced its “progress report” on “product prioritization” for Q2, which is essentially the company’s version of Google’s “spring cleaning”. In other words, it’s shutting some stuff down, and reducing support for other things.

Last year, Yahoo announced that it would shut down the Yahoo Directory, which basically put the company on the map in the first place. Here’s what Yahoo had to say about its latest round:

    • Support for Yahoo Mail on older iOS devices (built-in Mail app): In order to maintain focus on the security, speed and functionality of Yahoo Mail on the latest systems, we are no longer supporting Yahoo Mail on the built-in Mail app for devices prior to iOS 5 on June 15, 2015. If you use iOS 4 & earlier, you can continue to use Yahoo Mail on their Safari mobile browser at mail.yahoo.com.
    • Support for syncing Yahoo Contacts on older Macs: Similarly, to provide the best and safest experience, starting June 15, 2015, we are no longer supporting Yahoo Contacts syncing for devices prior to Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. If you use Mac OS X 10.7 Lion & earlier, you can continue to access your Yahoo Contacts through Yahoo Mail on their web browser.
    • maps.yahoo.com: The Yahoo Maps site will close at the end of June. However, in the context of Yahoo search and on several other Yahoo properties including Flickr, we will continue to support maps. We made this decision to better align resources to Yahoo’s priorities as our business has evolved since we first launched Yahoo Maps eight years ago.
    • GeoPlanet & PlaceSpotter APIs: For developers who use GeoPlanet and PlaceSpotter APIs, we are standardizing and consolidating our offerings by retiring these APIs in Q3. The functionality provided by these APIs are available today through Yahoo Query Language (YQL) and BOSS. Information on how to migrate the APIs is available on the websites forYQL (non-commercial usage with rate limited to 2,000 queries per day, per table, per app ID) and BOSS (commercial usage).
    • Market-specific Yahoo media properties: In the coming weeks, we will shut down some of our regional, genre-specific media properties to streamline our editorial offering. The content from these sites will be redistributed across the Yahoo network. Here are the affected markets and properties:
    • In mid-June, we will close Yahoo Music in France and Canada as well as Yahoo Movies in Spain. We will also close our Yahoo Philippines homepage and genre-specific media sites, and redirect to the Yahoo Singapore homepage.
    • At the end of June, we will close Yahoo TV in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Canada as well as Yahoo Autos in the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy.
    • In early July, Yahoo Entertainment in Singapore will close.
    • Yahoo Pipes: Pipes creation will not be supported as of Aug. 30 this year. Pipes infrastructure will run until Sept. 30, 2015 in read-only mode to help developers migrate their data. Please visit http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes for additional details.

I doubt that much of this will be incredibly missed by very many people, but the decision on Maps is particularly interesting simply because Yahoo has been one of the “Big 3” search engines, and one of those not having its own maps product is noteworthy, even if few ever used it in the first place.

  • Yahoo Mail Gets New Search Features

Yahoo announced the launch of some new search features for Yahoo Mail including easier folder search, refined search, and search suggestions.

“Your inbox is the perfect digital memory – from photos to documents, travel plans to shopping orders, events and more, it holds so much information about your personal life,” says product manager Abhinav Anand. “Yet, when you need something you know is there, the experience traditionally hasn’t been great. Our goal is to make it simple and easy to find what you’re looking for.”

With the new folder search, you can search any folder from the search bar, and select it right from the drop down menu. You can also select it fro the left column.

“You can now refine searches based on who sent them and the words they contain,” says Anand. “Say you’re looking for emails about an upcoming trip to San Francisco with a friend. Now simply type your friend’s name, followed by “San Francisco” in the search box. Yahoo Mail recognizes your friend’s name and shows you every email with that friend containing “San Francisco” in an easy-to-read results page.”

The new search suggestions are “intelligently” suggested with gray text while you type. It will display people and recent search suggestions, which you can select by hitting the tab key. If you select a person, it will display a custom search results page featuring messages, documents, and photos yo’ve sent or received from them.

Earlier this week, Yahoo announced a new suite of products for mobile developers, which will see Yahoo search functionality expanded to third-party mobile apps. Combined with its Mozilla Firefox browser deal, Yahoo is making significant moves to get more people using Yahoo Search.

  • Yahoo Mail iPhone App Lets You Track Packages

Yahoo Mail iPhone App Lets You Track Packages

Yahoo announced that the Yahoo Mail app on iOS will now let you track packages in the U.S. The app now includes package notifications with the latest release.

The feature enables users to view and track shipped packages in the Yahoo Today section of the app. It works with packages from Amazon, eBay, Zappos, Target, Best Buy, and Macy’s.com, to name a few.

Yahoo notifies the user when the package is shipped, as well as when it’s scheduled to arrive, and what’s actually in the shipment.

“We even added the much-requested ability to sort and select the type of content in your ‘Today’ section to make it even more personalized,” Yahoo notes. “By clicking on the gear icon on the top left corner, you will see a new ‘Edit Yahoo Today’ option for you to pick and choose what you’d like to see, including News Digest, Sports, Weather, Horoscope, Finance, Screen and Flickr.”

“Want to pick your favorite sports team? Now, you can do it within the ‘Yahoo Today’ section,” it adds. “Go to your Sports card and tap on the gear icon to set or remove your favorites. You can also edit your astrological sign in the daily horoscope section.”

The update will hit Android in the near future, Yahoo says.

  • Yahoo Mail Desktop Adds Personalized News Stream

Yahoo announced the launch of a personalized, real-time news stream with news summaries in the desktop version of Yahoo Mail. This was made available on the mobile version earlier this year.

The stream includes top stories across different categories, with summaries, which are enabled by the technology from Summly, which Yahoo acquired last year.

“The newstream is fast, fluid and intuitive to use,” says senior director of product management Raj Ramaswamy. “To read more about a topic, simply click on the article to launch the article summary. To see the full article, you can click on the ‘Read More’ link that will take you to the complete, original story. And if you’d like to save or share an article, hover over it and click the mail icon on the right side to email it to yourself.”

“Email and news are two of the most important daily habits for our users and we’ve been hard at work to bring the two experiences closer,” says Ramaswarmy.

To access the news stream, just click the news icon in the left-hand corner of Yahoo Mail any time.

  • Yahoo Mail Experiences Technical Difficulties

Yahoo Mail has been experiencing some technical difficulties with service disruption for some users due to the severing of an underwater cable, which the company says was caused by a third party.

This morning at 9:45 PST, Yahoo said, “The underwater cable cut affecting our network has now been located. Testing and repairs are currently taking place. The Yahoo engineering team continues to monitor email traffic. Thank you for your patience.”

In another update, it said, “Some customers may have receive[d] an error when attempting to access their Yahoo mail or their Yahoo Small Business Email account webmail. Due to this impacting both Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Business Mail customers, our engineering team are working towards a resolution as quickly as possible.”

Service has been disrupted throughout the weekend. In an update as early as Thursday afternoon, Yahoo said, “We are aware that Yahoo Mail is slow or inaccessible for some of our users. The issues were a result of an underwater fiber cable cut, caused by a third party while fixing a separate cable. The engineering team has rerouted email traffic to mitigate accessibility issues. A cable repair ship has been mobilized and will be at the site this weekend. We apologize for the inconvenience as we certainly understand email is a critical service for our customers.”

Here’s what the Twitterverse is saying about Yahoo Mail:

Further updates will be made here as they become available.

  • Report: Gmail Android App To Support Third-Party Accounts

Google officially announced Android 5.0 Lollipop last week, and now it appears the Gmail app is getting a new update to go along with it.

Android Police is reporting that the new app will be able to handle email accounts from other providers like Yahoo or Outlook, and will enable users to switch between accounts with a swipe or touch via drop-down.

It shows this in a Google-made video, which also shows off a new design for the app. Check the above link to get a look.

The app makes use of Lollipop’s “Material Design,” which is illustrated below.

Google has yet to officially announce the new Gmail features. Look for that pretty soon. The company hasn’t even updated its Gmail blog or Gmail Google+ account since August and September respectively.

  • Yahoo Follows Google Into Better Mail Encryption

Yahoo security chief Alex Stamos announced on Thursday that by sometime next year, Yahoo Mail will be encrypted end-to-end, and will be compatible with end-to-end encryption in Gmail.

CNET shares this statement from Stamos:

“What this means is that eventually not only will Yahoo Mail users be able to communicate in an encrypted manner with other Yahoo Mail users, but also with Gmail users and eventually with other email systems that adopt similar methodologies.”

Yahoo is following Google’s lead on this one.

Google announced the alpha version of a browser tool called End-to-End in June, which lets users add more security to what Google was already offering. In a blog post, the company explained:

“End-to-end” encryption means data leaving your browser will be encrypted until the message’s intended recipient decrypts it, and that similarly encrypted messages sent to you will remain that way until you decrypt them in your browser.

While end-to-end encryption tools like PGP and GnuPG have been around for a long time, they require a great deal of technical know-how and manual effort to use. To help make this kind of encryption a bit easier, we’re releasing code for a new Chrome extension that uses OpenPGP, an open standard supported by many existing encryption tools.

Ultimately, the idea is that users won’t have to worry about anyone gaining access to their emails, including companies like Google and Yahoo themselves, and governments.

Yahoo will also be open sourcing code in the fall.

  • Yahoo Mail Gets A New Android App

Yahoo Mail Gets A New Android App

Yahoo announced the release of a new Yahoo Mail Android app to follow the recently launched iOS version. This includes new news, search, weather, sports, video, and Flickr features.

In a Tumblr post, Yahoo Mail senior product manager Andrew Molyneux writes:

A couple of weeks back when we launched the new Yahoo Mail for iPhone, our goal was to put all the information you care about right at your fingertips. In addition to checking email more frequently, we’re seeing that iPhone users are spending more time in the app – browsing news, sports, videos and much more.

Beginning today, we’re bringing that new experience – with the same one-tap access to personalized, real-time news and information – to Android. Go ahead and check email, read the news, search, look up the forecast, catch up on sports, watch videos and browse Flickr, all in the same place, without the hassle of switching between apps.

The app includes the ability to swipe left or right or tap on an icon in the corner to let you move between your inbox, news stream, and Yahoo Today. The Today icon shows the weather, sports scores, news headlines, popular videos, and Flickr photos.

The app is available in Google Play. The News and Yahoo Today features will roll out over the coming days.

  • Yahoo Explains How It’s Making All Its Properties More Secure

Last fall, Yahoo announced that it would turn on SSL/HTTPS encryption for Yahoo Mail this year, which it did in January. The following month, they added it to Tumblr.

Yahoo has now posted an update on its ongoing encryption efforts.

It says that traffic moving between the company’s data centers is now full encrypted as of March 31st.

In addition to the aforementioned change to Yahoo Mail, they enabled encryption of mail between its servers and other mail providers that support the SMTPTLS standard in the last month.

The Yahoo Homepage and all search queries that run on it, as well as most other Yahoo properties now have HTTPS encryption enabled by default.

Yahoo implemented “the latest in security best-practices,” it says. This includes supporting TLS 1.2, Perfect Forward Secrecy and a 2048-bit RSA key for global properties like Homepage, Mail and Digital Magazines. They’re currently working to bring all Yahoo sites up to this standard, the company says.

Yahoo users can also now initiate an encrypted session for Yahoo News, Yahoo Sports, Yahoo Finance and Good Morning America on Yahoo by typing “https” before the site URL.

The company says a new, encrypted version of Yahoo Messenger will be deployed in the coming months.

“One of our biggest areas of focus in the coming months is to work with and encourage thousands of our partners across all of Yahoo’s hundreds of global properties to make sure that any data that is running on our network is secure,” says Chief Information Security Officer Alex Stamos. “Our broader mission is to not only make Yahoo secure, but improve the security of the overall web ecosystem.”

Yahoo says the goal is to encrypt its entire platform for all users all the time by default. They’ll also be implementing additional security measures like HSTS, Perfect Forward Secrecy, and Certificate Transparency over the coming months.

  • Yahoo Warns Users Of Big Yahoo Mail Hack Attempt

Yep, time for another announcement about an issue with Yahoo Mail.

Yahoo announced that it identified a “coordinated effort” to gain unauthorized access to Yahoo Mail accounts, though it didn’t say how many. As others have pointed out it must be a substantial number since they bothered to make the announcement. The company said it took “immediate action” to protect users, and prompted them to reset passwords.

“Based on our current findings, the list of usernames and passwords that were used to execute the attack was likely collected from a third-party database compromise,” writes Yahoo SVP, Platforms and Personalization Products, Jay Rossiter, in a blog post. “We have no evidence that they were obtained directly from Yahoo’s systems. Our ongoing investigation shows that malicious computer software used the list of usernames and passwords to access Yahoo Mail accounts. The information sought in the attack seems to be names and email addresses from the affected accounts’ most recent sent emails.”

This comes less than a month after Yahoo made HTTPS encryption the default on Yahoo Mail, following up on its previously announced initiative to make all data on its servers secure.

It also follows a recent major service outage for Yahoo Mail, which angered a lot of users (many of which were already angry over changes to the interface), which CEO Marissa Mayer ended up publicly apologizing for.

Earlier this month, Yahoo also hosted some ads that spread malware to users.

Regarding the most recent situation, Yahoo says it’s resetting passwords on impacted accounts and using second sign-in verification to let users “re-secure” their accounts. Users may receive email notifications or text messages if they’ve added their mobile number to their account, prompting them to change their password.

The company says it is also working with federal law enforcement to find and prosecute the perpetrators responsible for the attack, and has implemented “additional measures” to block further attacks.

“We regret this has happened and want to assure our users that we take the security of their data very seriously,” says Rossiter.

Yahoo is making no indication that this has anything to do with its email address recycling program, which gave away old accounts to new users, and was highly criticized.

  • Yahoo Mail Adds Default HTTPS As Promised

Yahoo Mail Adds Default HTTPS As Promised

Yahoo announced back in October that it would turn on SSL/HTTPS encryption for Yahoo Mail by default for all of its users starting on January 8th.

The company has now announced that it has indeed done so.

“Yahoo is fully committed to keeping our users safe and secure online,” writes Yahoo SVP of Communication Products Jeff Bonforte in a blog post. “As we promised back in October, we are now automatically encrypting all connections between our users and Yahoo Mail. Anytime you use Yahoo Mail – whether it’s on the web, mobile web, mobile apps, or via IMAP, POP or SMTP- it is 100% encrypted by default and protected with 2,048 bit certificates. This encryption extends to your emails, attachments, contacts, as well as Calendar and Messenger in Mail.”

“Security is a key focus for us and we’ll continue to enhance our security technology and policies so we can provide a safe and secure experience for our users,” he adds.

Yahoo Mail has faced a lot of backlash from users in recent months thanks to, at first, big design and functionality changes, and then a major outage debacle.

Here’s at least one thing that users shouldn’t have much trouble applauding.
