  • Porn Search Engine Search.xxx Launches to Make .xxx Browsing Safer

If your daily porn searches have led you to some of the more sketchy, unsafe places on the internet, a new search engine may be of interest to you. It’s called Search.xxx, and it’s the world’s first comprehensive search engine for all the .xxx domain porn sites out there.

We first told you about search.xxx when it was still in development, back in June of 2011. At that time, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) had just approved the .xxx top-level domain in a highly-contested split vote. The .xxx domain had been fought by conservative groups like the Family Research Council and by the porn industry itself at first. But when it was finally approved, registry operator ICM Registry won the opportunity to manage it.

And now it’s ICM Registry who has just unveiled the new porn-only search engine. Search.xxx promises that it’s safe and optimized for mobile. In fact, all of the .xxx sites crawled by the engine are scanned every day for malware, using McAfee software. Search.xxx is also available in 20 languages and customizable based on sexual orientation.

Search.xxx does not list traditional .com porn sites, only .xxx sites, which first went live back in December of 2011. So you won’t be seeing any links to YouPorn or PornHub on this search engine.

Upon review, the search engine works as expected, with searches generating only .xxx links. Users can change the language and sexual orientation preferences from the SERPs, which also include a “quick search” feature featuring popular porn terms that you may be familiar with.

When the engine was first announced, ICM Registry President Stuart Lawley mentioned ads and sponsorships. There are currently no ads on search.xxx – either traditional or within the results (at least they aren’t clearly marked). Of course, that could change with time, as the engine was just unsheathed.

So, why do we need a special search engine for .xxx domains? ICM thinks that the exclusivity and safety is a big draw. Of course, adult site searchers can’t always rely on engines like Google or Bing to provide the results they want – as those sites’ relationship with porn is tenuous, at best. Search.xxx, on the other hand, is definitely tailored to its crowd.

“While some search engines reportedly de-rank adult sites in order to filter adult content out of regular searches, our new search engine helps consumers accurately find and enjoy all manner of porn – because it searches only .XXX domain-based porn,” said ICM.

The new search engine is just barely off the ground, but will undoubtedly become more relevant as .xxx domains continue to pop up on the internet.

  • .XXX Domain Purchases Begin, Calling It a Landrush

There has been a long running debate, and legal battle over whether or not .xxx domains should be allowed to exist. ICM, presented their idea of .xxx and .kids domains to ICANN back in 2000. Various proposals would be submitted throughout the years, none of which would be accepted until March 31st this year.

Now, you can put a claim into a .xxx domain, so long as you’re a member of the adult sponsored community. ICM is handling the process in various phases. Their “Sunrise A” and “Sunrise B” phases allowed trademarked companies to apply for the domains; reversely, companies were allowed to prevent their company from appearing on .xxx addresses as well.

As of November 8th, we’re now in the “Landrush” phase. Meaning, there are no trademark or pre-ownership rights requirements. Beyond being a member of the adult entertainment community, all bets are off. The Landrush phase will last until November 25th. Afterwards, on December 6th, the domain will be available to the general public.

    XXX Domain Landrush

The argument over the domain generally concerns the reasons behind its need. Many believe providing pornographic sites the option to have a .xxx domain, will provide internet users a distinct signal that there is adult material on the site. Others believe the domain won’t act as that great of a filter, specifically within search engines.

The real question is whether or not .xxx is a top-level domain which can actually take off and make a dent. Most top-level domains never gain the traction to necessitate use. Why use .me when .com has better credence?

According to a recent press release, over 80,000 applications for .xxx domain names were received. That’s just during the Sunrise phases, so the number is expected to exponentially increase going into Landrush.

Stuart Lawley, CEO of ICM Registry, said this of the numbers, “We couldn’t be happier about the success of the Sunrise period. There is always a risk with a new TLD that you may build it and nobody will come. We are thrilled that over 80,000 applications came! In fact, the .XXX Sunrise period results far exceeds those of any other new sTLD, including .mobi, .asia and even that of .co that re-launched last year with a significant marketing campaign. We look forward with great anticipation to Landrush, opening next week and General Availability on December 6, which is when the fun really starts.”

All of the domain registration companies are accepting .xxx domains at this time: GoDaddy, name.com, register.com, and more.

It will be interesting to see what impact .XXX will have in the world of top-level domains. Will pornographic sites start to shift to the domain, simply for the prospect of having the “xxx” on the end? Will search engines tweak their results to compensate for the domain inclusion?

  • PETA Discusses Upcoming Porn Site

    PETA Discusses Upcoming Porn Site

Who knew the “P” in PETA doesn’t stand for people? Apparently, it stand for “pornography,” which is always a winning combination in regards to Internet dwellers, but in this case, will PETA’s upcoming pornography site, one that aims to use the adult medium to further its mission, be successful?

In case you missed it, word of PETA’s porn site came about when the .xxx domain restriction was lifted and companies began their race to register their .xxx site. You know, for brand awareness and all that? Anyway, while it’s doubtful we’ll ever see a Coca-Cola-based pornography site, we will apparently be getting one from an organization that’s committed to protecting animals.

I’m not sure what this means for the content of PETA’s soon-to-be porn site, but if they go the furries route, it would almost be too good to be true. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case, according to some quotes that appeared in the The Telegraph recently. Rest assured, however. Furries or no, PETA is going to deliver its message with a helping hand from the most ubiquitous of Internet mediums, porn:

“We’re hoping to reach a whole new audience of people, some of whom will be shocked by graphic images that maybe they didn’t anticipate seeing when they went to the PETA triple-X site,” said Lindsay Rajt, PETA’s associate director of campaigns.

Does this mean the furries phenomenon is still in play for PETA? Perhaps, but when it launches in December, PETA’s use of their .xxx domain is just as much about generating buzz as it is to titillate viewers:

“We try to use every outlet that we can to speak up for animals,” Rajt said. “We anticipated that this new triple-X domain name would be a hot topic and we immediately decided to use it and take advantage of it to try to promote the animal rights message.”

As for what the site’s content will entail, there’s a description of that, as well:

Visitors to the X-rated site will initially be presented with pornographic content as well as images from PETA’s salacious ads and campaigns, Rajt said. Those images will be followed by pictures and video shot undercover of the mistreatment of animals. The site will also include links to vegetarian and vegan – using no animal products – starter kits as well as recipes.

An example of these advertisements PETA refers to leads this article, and if PETA can promise more alluring shots of Charlotte Ross, who knows? Maybe the message will be successfully broadcast across the web. The question is, is porn an effective medium for getting a message out concerning the ethical treatment of animals?

Would, say, someone who hunts for recreation change their behavior after enjoying Internet porn, wrapped in a bow of “we must protect the animals” messages?

  • XXX Porn Site On The Way For PETA?

In the upcoming months, you’re going to start seeing a much greater variety of domains names appear on your url bar.

This year, Internet domain name overlords ICANN have made two important votes – first, they decided to lift almost all restrictions on generic top-level domains (gTLDs). This means that along with your basic .com, .gov, and .net, private citizens and companies are soon going to be able to register almost anything they want – .josh, .Pepsi, or .food.

Some organizations are speaking out against this decision, saying that it could lead to disaster for brand owners.

ICANN is set to start accepting applications for new gTLDs in January of 2012. The second big decision made by ICANN this year is set to go into effect much sooner. The age of dot-xxx is upon us. Although the official “sunrise” registration period doesn’t kick off until September 7th, domain operator ICM Registry is accepting early applications from organizations who wish to control their names.

It took ICM Registry over 10 years to finally convince ICANN to allow the .xxx domain. And with the new adult domain on the horizon, companies are going into defensive mode. According to Reuters, ICM Registry has received over 900,000 requests already from companies that want to preregister a .xxx domain.

Many are doing this to block others from snatching up the domains in the future. For instance, a company like Stanley Steamer or Coke would want to register StanleySteamer.xxx and Coke.xxx – not to use the sites but to make sure others do not. You don’t want grandma doing a Google search and stumbling on something that’s going to turn her off Coke forever.

MTV has apparently already requested domains like spongebob.xxx and others to prevent cybersquatting. They have no plans to actually operate the site, however.

But one high-profile organization does. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is planning on not only registering PETA.xxx, but actually running it as a pornography site. According to Reuters, they will use the new .xxx porn site to “draw attention to the plight of animals.”

Of course, this shouldn’t be too surprising. PETA has been asking celebs to strip down in support of their cause for years. Their “I’d rather go naked than wear fur” campaign has featured notable celebs, all in the buff. A whole site dedicated to this type of advertising seems quite logical.

Yesterday, GoDaddy announced their pricing scheme for the new .xxx domains. Early registers will need to shell out $210 at first and then $100 each year in renewal costs.

PETA will probably attempt to avoid GoDaddy, however, as the two companies haven’t exactly see eye to eye in recent months. PETA called for a boycott of GoDaddy after their CEO Bob Parsons killed an elephant and threw the video online. It doesn’t look like it worked, however, as GoDaddy registrations actually went up following the elephant killing.

  • New .XXX Porn Sites To Get Their Own Search Engine

A few months ago, before the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) voted to allow people to register any domain they like, they made news by approving the .XXX top-level domain.

In a split vote, the ICANN voted to give porn sites a new home on the web. .XXX saw a long and hard battle to become a reality. It was first proposed in 2000, resubmitted in 2004, approved and then rejected in 2006, looked over in 2007 and finally approved in 2010. With each proposal, .XXX was met with opposition from conservative groups like the Family Research Council. Initially, the porn industry opposed the new domain as well, saying that it would put their industry at risk for regulation and censorship.

The initial proposition for the .XXX domain was made by ICM Registry, a registry operator sponsored by the International Foundation for Online Responsibility. When the .XXX domain was finally approved this year, ICM won the opportunity to manage it.

The new domain will be available starting on September 7th. They will cost roughly $75 a year, a rate much higher than most .com domains. It has been reported that during the initial registering period, the .XXX domains will cost much more, however, possibly even $650.

Now, according to the Register, .XXX sites will be getting their own search engine.

They talked to ICM Registry President Stuart Lawley who confirmed that the new destination, search.XXX, will index all of the porn found at .XXX addresses. Initially, the search engine will draw from about a dozen “premium” .XXX sites. It will be aided by ads and sponsorship, according to Lawley.

Of course, major search engines like Google and Bing will also index the new .xxx sites, but history has shown us that porn and Google isn’t always a match made in heaven.

Here’s what ICM has to say about the benefits of the .XXX domains –

As a trusted brand, customer confidence will be very high resulting in more traffic, greater repeat traffic, and, perhaps most importantly, greater conversion into paying customers. Holders of .XXX domains will also benefit from global marketing campaigns and greater awareness in the mainstream world. Additionally ICM is developing a traffic generation search portal for .XXX sites that will be promoted internationally leading to immediate new traffic to .XXX domains for new registrants.

The adult industry isn’t convinced. According to the Register –

Existing porn companies with large portfolios of domains in other extensions are concerned that they will be forced to spend thousands on defensive registrations or risk being cybersquatted.

Some porn publishers are also worried that .xxx domains carry the risk that ICM’s policy-setting body, IFFOR (International Foundation for Online Responsibility) may create draconian new rules that will damage their businesses in future.

ICM Registry is now in the process of finding “technology partners” for its upcoming search engine.
