Xbox One And PS4 On Sale This November

It’s almost Christmas time again and for gamers that means going to great lengths to get their hands on one of the new must-have, next-gen video game consoles. On Nov. 15, Sony will release the PS4 while Microsoft will release the Xbox One on Nov. 22 – one week before Black Friday.

Did you pre-order? If the answer to that question is no, then good luck trying to get your hands on one of these consoles before the year goes out. Your best bet now is to wait in the really long line at your neighborhood Gamestop for the small chance that you may walk away lucky. But if you’re a real gamer you probably knew that already.

    Xbox One: Invitation

     Playstation 4: Greatness Awaits

Gamestop, Amazon, Best Buy, Target and Walmart have all closed their reservations.  It seems as though every Fall for the past several years there’s a frenzy for the next Xbox or PlayStation.

For those of you that are still hoping to get a Xbox One or PlayStation 4 – you ain’t gonna get one for cheap. The Xbox One is priced at $499, and the PlayStation 4 goes for $399. The retail cost of these two items may be a bit hefty but these are not just games they are entertainment centers.

The Xbox One comes with advanced voice and motion control and switches easily from game to TV or a movie. In order to take advantage of premium features, like access to apps, downloadable games and online messaging, users of the Xbox One will need to pay extra for the Xbox Live service.

Sony claims that PlayStation 4 has better graphics than Xbox One, but the graphics quality for both consoles are so incredibly realistic that subtle differences will be undetectable for most gamers. The PlayStation 4 does, however,  come with Ustream – a feature that will allow PlayStation 4 users to upload and share video game clips to the internet. PlayStation 4 also has a lower price tag that should make it an attractive alternative for hardcore gamers looking to save money.

  • Skyrim Kinect Support Now Available, DLC Info On The Way

UPDATE: Oh look – DLC alert!

Hey Skyrim players: have you been working on your shouts? That Kinect support that Bethesda promised in early April has officially arrived. Now, when you yell at your TV, something might actually happen.

The Bethesda blog says that the English Kinect support is now available on your 360, and that French, Italian, German, and Spanish versions are in the final testing stage and should be coming soon.

Here’s what you can expect to get with the Kinect update:

In addition to Dragon Shouts, the Kinect for Xbox 360 integration offers voice commands throughout the game including Hotkey Equipping, Follower Commands, and all Menus (Items, Magic, Map, Barter, Container, Favorites, and Skills). With Voice Commands, quickly create and load saves during gameplay and access menus and inventories. Skyrim’s Kinect for Xbox 360 Support also adds new functionality including special map functions, additional hotkey options, and the ability to sort inventory items by name, weight, and value.

We were also promised a full list of voice commands, and you can now access that here.

While the Kinect support is fun and all, some Skyrim lovers have something else on their minds today. This tweet teases some sort of Skyrim DLC information for today. Let’s just say we’re closely watching Bethesda’s social channels this morning.

  • Skyrim Kinect Support Is On The Way

Are you sick of loading up the menu every time you want to save or load a game? Tired of clicking buttons to switch between weapons, slowing down your progression in immeasurable ways? Are you frustrated that yelling your favorite shouts at the TV has little to no effect on gameplay?

Well, you’re in luck. Skyrim for Xbox 360 is about to get Kinect support.

Google+Reader”>According to the Bethesda blog, all 360 users will be receiving this as a free upgrade some time this month. All in all, over 200 voice commands will be included

Check out this video on some of the upcoming Kinect features:

They’ll be releasing a full list of all of the various commands in the next few weeks. In the meantime, players should practice up on their shouts, considering their apartment walls aren’t too thin. Hopefully, we won’t hear any stories in the future about overenthusiastic Skyim players “FUS RO DAH”‘ing themselves into a noise violation.

Some early feedback (from Youtube) suggests that some players would like this functionality without the Kinect – perhaps speaking directly into a microphone. Others aren’t really understanding the negative feedback:

I love how Bethesda is giving this away for free, continuing to patch the game (far past what they’ve ever done before, too) and regularly adding features to Skyrim… and people are still complaining. I didn’t realize the subculture I most identified with (Gamers) were such f*cking tools.

Oh well. What do you think? Are you excited about this update. We your pleased with the kill cam-bringing 1.5 update? Let us know in the comments.

  • Netflix, Hulu Users Streaming Video in Vastly Different Ways

There is a fundamental distinction between Netflix users and Hulu users, and it goes far beyond who has more allegiance to 30 Rock.

Netflix and Hulu users differ greatly in both how they stream their content and what content they are streaming.

Nielsen conducted a survey and found that 89% of Hulu users report streaming their video directly to their computers. Only 42% of Netflix users said that this is how they watch stuff. Of that 89% of computer-streaming Hulu users, only 20% said that they connect their computers to their TVs.

The majority of Netflix videos are being enjoyed on people’s televisions. Whether that be through the Wii, Xbox360 and PS3 consoles or internet-enabled devices like Roku and Blu-Ray players, chances are good that if you’re streaming Netflix, you’re taking it in on a bigger screen.

One of the most surprising figures to me is the Hulu/Xbox Live stat. Of the 12,000 people that Nielsen asked, only 2% stream Hulu via their Xbox360s? That’s only shocking to me because I remember how excited people were when Hulu announced it was coming to the Microsoft console.

Nielsen also looked at what users are watching on each service. 53% of Netflix users are watching movies while only 11% say they exclusively watch TV shows. 36% said they watch both equally.

When it comes to Hulu, a whopping 73% said that they primarily view TV shows on the service and only 9% said that they primarily view movies. 18% said that they watch both equally.

Does this some something to do with the people? Probably not, as it most likely has more to do with the catalogs. The recent Netflix price hike outrage might cause a significant number of members to say goodbye to their subscriptions, but would they give their money to Hulu Plus instead? It sure seems that at least right now, the two services aren’t competing with each other for the same type of content and user.
