Just when you thought European culture was more open-minded than American culture, think again, because the Conseil superieur de l’audiovisuel (CSA), which regulates France’s media, says the videos of Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears can’t be played before 10:00 pm.
The CSA said Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” and Spears’ “Work B-tch” videos were simply too sexy for daytime, and they should be played later on when parents are more likely to monitor what their children are watching.
Although many are bound to disagree with the French regulators, some might applaud their actions and say the videos are too racy for morning and afternoon viewing. In “Wrecking Ball, Cyrus prances around in her underwear and licks a mallet pretty seductively. And in “Work B-tch,” Spears does a good amount of gyrating in barely-anything-there-attire, and adds a little bit of S&M imagery for good measure. Of course these kinds of videos are nothing new to Americans or Europeans, but it seems like France has been trying to be more conservative when it comes to its daytime programming.
In an interview with a Boston radio station last year, Spears says she understands why there are some folks who feel her videos are a bit oversexed, and if she had it her way, she’d scale them back a little.
“A lot of sex goes into what I do but sometimes I would like to bring it back to the old days when there was like, one outfit through the whole video, and you’re dancing the whole video, and there’s not that much sex stuff going on,” she said.
Spears says that she even has to play editor sometimes, and cut portions of her video out. She does this for herself as well as her children, she says. “I cut out half the video because I am a mother and because, you know, I have children, and it’s just hard to play sexy mom while you’re being a pop star as well,” she explained.
