  • Laura Dern, Other Actresses Gather At Pre-Oscar Party To Promote Women In Film

Laura Dern, Other Actresses Gather At Pre-Oscar Party To Promote Women In Film

Laura Dern gathered with fellow Oscar nominees on Friday to celebrate and promote women in front of, and behind, the camera.

The event, which kicked off an exciting Oscar weekend, was called the Women in Film Pre-Oscar Cocktail Party and was hosted at Hyde Sunset Kitchen + Cocktails in Los Angeles.

Besides Laura Dern, the famous female faces included the stunning and talented Meryl Streep, Rosamund Pike, and newcomers like Elle Fanning.

Laura Dern is one among a small pool of females in Hollywood that are wanting to promote and acknowlege women who star in, direct, cast, design costumes for, and do so many other jobs to make some of Hollywood’s biggest movies and great independent films happen.

Lately, there has been a movement to bring a bigger female voice to Hollywood, which Laura Dern, Meryl Streep, and many other actresses find glaringly male.

They aren’t alone, however. There are many men who have taken up the cause to support their female colleagues.

Peter Fonda, for example, has been very outspoken about women and equality in Hollywood.

“We can’t just stop at Kathryn Bigelow,” he said, speaking of the only female director to ever win an Oscar.

He then proceeded to sum up the American film industry’s view of women and that of Britian, saying, “There are so many more women who are writers, who are actors, who are producers and they should be able to stand just even with all the males. Hollywood’s got a screwball way of doing it.”

He added. “Unlike in Great Britain where they revere their older actors and actresses, here, all the women are chasing youth and it’s a terrible thing.”

While that holds true for many actresses of today, great women like the above-mentioned Laura Dern and Meryl Streep seem to age gracefully and not try to keep up with their younger counter parts. And they are doing just fine.

In fact, Meryl Streep has had some huge successes of late, like her magnificent role in Into the Woods.

Laura Dern isn’t doing so bad herself.

Laura Dern has signed on to join Michelle Williams in Kelly Reichardt’s next film, which remains an untitled independent film based on short stories by Maile Meloy.

She has a big Oscar weekend in the works with her nomination for Wild. She has previously starred in The Fault in Our Stars, When the Game Stands Tall and the upcoming 99 Homes.

Best of luck to Laura Dern at the Oscars on Sunday!

  • Mindy Kaling Sends Reese Witherspoon a ‘Wreath Witherspoon’ for Oscar Nod

Mindy Kaling sent pal Reese Witherspoon a wreath for her Oscar nod for her role in Wild. When she shared an Instagram photo of the gift with her followers, it became a bit of a trend. Since then, The Mindy Project star’s gift has circulated the internet as the ‘Wreath Witherspoon.’

The pink and purple floral arrangement is adorned with golden Oscar statues and a photo of Reese.

This isn’t the first Wreath Witherspoon, however. The trend began when Mindy Kaling hung a ‘Wreath Witherspoon’ on the Christmas episode of The Mindy Project. Fans got in on the act, creating wreaths of their own to share on social media.

“I was happy that that caught on so much,” Mindy said in a recent interview with Access Hollywood at the People Magazine Awards on December 18.

“That was cool because when we shot that scene, it was a little part of the scene…and Reese Witherspoon’s a good actress. We like her,” Mindy Kaling said.

When Reese Witherspoon got wind of the decor made in her honor, she Instagrammed an adorable Christmas message peeking through the center of a wreath on Christmas Day, captioning it, “Wishing y’all a very merry, peaceful, and family-filled Christmas!!! Sincerely, #WreathWitherspoon.. (couldn’t resist…@MindyKaling”

Reese Witherspoon dubbed Mindy Kaling’s most recent Wreath Witherspoon the best gift ever. She shared the Oscar nomination gift via Instagram as well, as it hung proudly on her front door.

    “I mean… C’mon! Best gift ever ! Thanks @mindykaling for my #WreathWitherspoon #Oscar edition. #YesItsOnMyFrontDoor,” she captioned the shot.

Can you think of someone who might like to receive a Wreath Witherspoon from you? Has Mindy Kaling perhaps started a new and very creative trend among Hollywood’s finest?

  • Laura Dern, Judd Apatow to Produce Comedy Based on ‘Obsessive Female Football Fans’

Laura Dern and Girls producer Judd Apatow are teaming up with Universal studios to produce a comedy centered around “obsessive female football fans,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Dern came up with the concept for the ensemble piece and Pam Barker — who collaborated with Trey Parker and Matt Stone on South Park: Bigger Longer and Uncut and co-wrote Hamlet 2 — will write the screenplay.

Dern and Apatow are producing the comedy, along with Bridesmaids producer Barry Mendel.

Dern most recently starred in The Fault in Our Stars with Shailene Woodley and Wild with Reese Witherspoon, and she co-created and starred in HBO’s Enlightened. She also appeared in 99 Homes, a drama that was featured at Toronto’s film festival.

Apatow directed Trainwreck, which was written by and stars Amy Schumer and will be released in summer 2015.

Eric Baiers, Universal’s senior vice president of production, will oversee the project.

Most recently, the Golden Globe winner portrays the troubled mother to Witherspoon‘s character in Wild, which recounts the real-life adventures of Cheryl Strayed. After years of reckless behavior as a heroin addict and the destruction of her marriage, Cheryl decides to go on a solo journey along the Pacific Crest Trail.

Haunted by memories of her mother, Bobbi (Dern), Strayed sets out with absolutely no experience to hike the thousand-mile journey that terrifies, frustrates, strengthens, and ultimately heals her.

  • Reese Witherspoon Gets Raw for ‘Wild’ Role

Reese Witherspoon Gets Raw for ‘Wild’ Role

To leave the Elle Woods memories behind, Reese Witherspoon embarks on riskier career choices.

Witherspoon helped produce two highly anticipated films that hit the big screen this fall: Wild and Gone Girl. Director David Fincher’s new suspense drama Gone Girl comes out next month. The film stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike as a complex married couple with lots of dark secrets. In December, Witherspoon stars in Wild, a film about a hiking trip that helps a woman overcome her grief. Gone Girl takes on a subject matter you wouldn’t associate with Witherspoon, while Wild shows the complexities of her acting.

Wild, based on Cheryl Strayed’s memoirs Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, forced Witherspoon to challenge herself as an actress. The film is about Strayed’s rockbottom because of her mother’s sudden death. She engaged in one night stands and heroine usage. Witherspoon graced the cover of Vogue’s October issue.

In the magazine she shared some of her acting struggles, and issues with playing this character. “I just didn’t want to hear, ‘Oh, we don’t want to see Reese have sex. . . . Oh, can we not have any profanity?’ ” Witherspoon revealed. “I wanted it to be truthful, I wanted it to be raw, I wanted it to be real.”

Embracing the role of Cheryl wasn’t as easy as Witherspoon expected. During the filming of Wild, Strayed had to show the Legally Blonde actress how to shoot heroine. Witherspoon also had some trouble filming the sex scenes. According to Vogue, she needed a hypnotist on set to calm her during sex scenes.

Despite some of Strayed’s coping methods, Witherspoon relates to her struggles. “Nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors, but I think there’s a general sense now that I’ve lived a pretty textured life. So many of the things that Cheryl goes through in the book I’ve been through, you know? I’ve been married, I’ve been divorced. I haven’t lost my mother, but my mother’s mother died in a very similar way, of an aneurysm very suddenly…Cheryl has this idea that the things that have happened to you are part of you. There’s something really beautiful about that idea,” Witherspoon shared.

    Wild hits theaters December 5.

  • Snake Eating Croc: Ultimate Battle

Watching a snake chomp down on a crocodile is not something one sees everyday. Australian resident Tiffany Corlis and other onlookers witnessed a five-hour long struggle between a water python and a three-foot crocodile inside Lake Moondarra. The snake ultimately swallowed the crocodile, but not before a long battle ensued.

According to Corlis the whole ordeal was an amazing display of the brutality that often occurs in nature. “(The crocodile) was fighting at the start, it was trying to keep its head out of water and survive, but as the morning progressed you could tell both of them were getting a little weaker as the struggle was going on, finally the croc sort of gave in.” Corlis said before adding, “It was just unbelievable, we were sort of thinking the snake had bitten off a little more than it could chew, pardon the pun, but it did actually eat the crocodile. You could see the crocodile in the snake’s belly which I think was probably the more remarkable thing. You could actually see its legs and see its scales and everything, it was just amazing.”

The battle between snake and crocodile may seem like an epic battle between two of nature’s most notorious beasts; however, the actual size may not be quite so impressive. Terry Phillip, who is the curator of reptiles for Reptile Gardens located in Rapid City, South Dakota, recently spoke with National Geographic. According to Phillip, “These animals aren’t giants. That snake is likely about 15 or 20 pounds [7 to 9 kilograms], and the croc might be 5 to 7 pounds [2 to 3 kilograms], probably three feet [one meter] long. And for these species, native to that part of Australia, this is a very natural event. While that looks like a really big meal, it’s a pretty common one for that type of snake.”

Either way, it was a bad day to be a croc.

  • Miley Cyrus is Justin Bieber’s Mentor

It’s news you never get tired about hearing, whether it’s displayed in the impulse buyers section on the magazine rack at a grocery store, or it’s your Facebook feed; America’s sweet hearts are Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus.  The child stars are buddies, and since Cyrus has been in the industry longer, she consoles Bieber in a business where the wild public degrades you for your behavior, and you never get a moment of privacy.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone Cyrus revealed that she provides some sage wisdom and peace of mind for Bieber.

“I’m not much older than him, so I never want it to feel like I’m mentoring him,” Cyrus said. “But I do mentor him in a way. Because I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I already transitioned, and I don’t think he’s quite done it yet.”

Though Cyrus doesn’t often hang out Bieber, with whom she describes as a “Baby” singer, she still deeply respects the artist and cares for him. Back in May during the Billboard Awards 2013, Bieber faced a wave of boos as he thanked Jesus Christ.

“He’s trying really hard,” Cyrus said. “People don’t take him seriously, but he really can play the drums, he really can play guitar, he really can sing.”

“I just don’t want to see him fuck that up, to where people think he’s Vanilla Ice. I tell him that. Like, ‘You don’t want to become a joke. When you go out, don’t start shit. Don’t come in shirtless.’”

Both celebrities have had a rough year. Bieber has a long list of controversies surrounding him; late last year a convict named Dana Martin hatched a plan to cut off the Bieb’s balls. On every Facebook feed and electronic device with a screen on it, 20-year old Cyrus twerked her buttocks against the sexist crotch of 36-year old Robin Thicke, then proceeded to film a music video where she’s riding naked on a wrecking ball.

“I think boys are, like, seven years behind. So in his head, he’s really, like, 12.”

And she might actually be right, Elite Daily reported that men don’t really mature until they’re around 32 or so.

Fame makes a man think things over.
