  • Whitney Houston: Family Has Nothing to Do With Upcoming Biopic About Late Singer

A Whitney Houston biopic is in its early stages, and already the family of the late “I Will Always Love You” singer has spoken out against it.

The film about Whitney Houston, which is being created for BBC Two, is helmed by Nick Broomfield, who is known for other controversial films including Kurt and Courtney and Biggie and Tupac.

BBC Two reports that Whitney “goes in search of the forces that made and then destroyed the singer who has been described as having one of the greatest voices of the last 50 years.”

It was a little less than a week ago when a spokesperson for Whitney Houston’s family issued a statement to Rolling Stone about the upcoming film.

“The Whitney Houston Estate has no involvement in this program whatsoever,” the statement reads.

In 2015, a Lifetime biopic about Whitney Houston–and also called Whitney–drew considerable criticism from members of Whitney Houston’s family, too.

“You should not be surprised that someone decided to do a made-for-TV biopic. And, I might add, without the family’s blessing and despite her mother’s request to not do this movie,” Whitney Houston’s sister-in-law, Pat Houston, said at the time. “It happens every day.”

In light of the recent passing of Whitney Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, there might be a renewed interest in the late singer’s life and death.

  • Whitney Houston: Angela Bassett Defends Biopic

Angela Bassett says that she is happy to have been able to direct a biopic about legendary singer Whitney Houston, but fans and critics haven’t been too kind to her.

Whitney Houston’s mother has been the most critical of the biopic and of Bassett and earlier this year she accused the first-time director of delivering misinformation and providing inaccurate facts in the film.

“In the two years since Whitney’s death, many people have stepped forward to speak about their close relationship with her. I find it difficult to believe people who knew and supposedly loved her would participate in a movie about her done by folks who didn’t know her. We are exhausted by the continuing misinformation and comments offered by people who did not know her. Please please let her rest,” Whitney’s mother Cissy told Entertainment Tonight.

Bassett met and worked with Whitney on the set of Waiting To Exhale and claims that she did know her and can also relate to her story.

“I did spend a little time [with] her, but to know her intimately, intimately — I mean, who does but the person and the Lord they serve? Who knows a person,” she said according to ABC News.

She added, “But I know a little about being in the spotlight, a little about celebrity and its demands, a little about trying to find a mate and the support that’s needed in your industry; mine being acting, hers [the] music industry. I know about being a woman, about being a black woman that came up in a little hometown … and yet you are able to become a success because of this God-given gift of talent. So I know a little bit about what it might have been like.”

In spite of all the negative criticism, Bassett has held her head high.

She told The Huffington Post that she is proud of the biopic and hopes that Whitney would be proud of it too.

“I consider it a gift that was given to me, the opportunity to tell this story and try to tell it with love and compassion and dignity. I, like, everyone adored her,” she said.

  • Whitney Houston’s Daughter Bobbie Kristina Lashes Out At Angela Bassett

Whitney Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina is not happy about the Lifetime biopic about her late mother.

Angela Bassett, who worked with Houston in the 1995 movie Waiting To Exhale, is making her directorial debut for the late singer’s biopic. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bassett said that she never thought of casting Bobbi Kristina for several reasons. “One being that she’s not an actress. I know she’s acted here and there. I know she’s been on their family’s reality show, but she’s not an actress and acting is a craft,” she said.

The 21-year-old Bobbi Kristina took to Twitter to show her anger towards Bassett’s statement. “When I win my first Grammy or Oscar, *Shrugs* hmm whichever comes1st, I’ll be sure 2shout URname out bitch! hahUrTestResults=MALE. Lmao,” she tweeted. Reports also stated that Bobbi Kristina called Bassett a “bassketcase.” Bobbi Kristina deleted the tweet from her account.

America’s Next Top Model alum Yaya DaCosta is set to play Houston’s role. DaCosta has been working as an actress since she was a child and she also had recurring roles in Ugly Betty and All My Children.

Bassett also said that the biopic will attempt to shed light on the “complexities of human behavior and life.” However, they have a very tight schedule and they only have 21 days to tell the entire story. Bassett explained that it’s not merely about memorizing lines. “You have to drive the story – there’s a technical aspect.”

Whitney Houston’s family thinks the biopic is ‘cheap’.

Sources said that Nina Terrero, who conducted the interview with Bassett, said that the 55-year-old actress said her comments about Bobbi Kristina “without a hint of malice.” She also said that Bassett is a sweet woman and an established actress who “has everything to lose” with the Houston biopic.

Bassett has not commented on Bobbi Kristina’s outburst and even shared the interview to her followers on Twitter.
