Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp Get a Ridiculous Official Trailer

The first official trailer for Netflix’s upcoming Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp is here.

The series, which will feature eight episodes, will hit Netflix on July 31st (pushed back a bit from its first-announced July 17th date)

Without further ado, here it is:

“It’s the first day of camp in this outrageous prequel to the hilarious 2001 cult classic movie. And at Camp Firewood, anything can happen,” says Netflix

“An all-star cast delivers big laughs in this irreverent spoof of summer camp and ’80s teenager movies. We’ve seen the last day of summer in the classic original film, now discover the events that shaped these iconic characters on the first day of Camp Firewood’s season.”

The show stars Elizabeth Banks, Michael Ian Black, Bradley Cooper, Judah Friedlander, Janeane Garofalo, Joe Lo Truglio, Ken Marino, Christopher Meloni, Marguerite Moreau, Zak Orth, Amy Poehler, David Hyde Pierce, Paul Rudd, Molly Shannon, and Michael Showalter in returning roles. Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, John Slattery, and Chris Pine are joining the fun, too.

And let’s not forget the beautiful ode the VHS Netflix have us a couple weeks ago:

  • Netflix Wants More Original Comedies, Horror

Netflix Wants More Original Comedies, Horror

Netflix is very interested in launching more original comedies, and is thinking about westerns and more horror shows as well.

The Hollywood Reporter has an extensive interview with Cindy Holland, the company’s head of original content. Asked about what genres Netflix would still like to try, she told the publication:

Comedies of varying types are an area of extreme interest to us. We haven’t seen the perfect Western project yet, either. Although Hemlock covers horror and supernatural to some extent, there are several subgenres within those categories that we haven’t reached into yet and would look to explore if the right project came along.

As far as comedy goes, Wet Hot American Summer appears to still be in the cards, based on the interview. They’re also still ready for another season of Arrested Development whenever creator Mitch Hurwitz is.

It’s also noted in the piece that Hemlock Grove drew more visitors than even House of Cards, so it’s quite understandable why they’d want to explore more horror opportunities. Personally I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the Friday the 13th series that’s in development. Creator Sean Cunningham has mentioned Netflix in the past as a possible destination of interest. They seem like a perfect match to me. Netflix likes shows with built-in audiences that like to binge. I think USA Up All Night has proven hat people will watch back to back Friday films even when they’re watered down for television.

“I don’t think any genres are off-limits to us,” Holland said at one point, specifically in response to questions about interest in Chelsea Handler for a late night show (which the company just officially announced). Asked about live events, Holland reiterated a point the company has made in the past in that on-demand will continue to be the focus.

Some other interesting takeaways from the interview: Orange is the New Black is still Netflix’s biggest show; there is surprisingly little overlap in viewership among Netflix originals; and Netflix wanted True Detective and Fargo, but lost out to HBO and FX respectively.

Hemlock Grove: Season 2 is next up on the schedule, premiering July 11th. Here’s a new behind-the-scenes look at that.

  • Netflix May Get ‘Wet Hot American Summer’ Series

According to multiple reports, Netflix is in talks to get a Wet Hot American Summer series, which would serve as a prequel to the star-studded film from The State’s David Wain and Michael Showalter.

Variety first reported the news, which was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. The series would reportedly be ten episodes executive produced by Wain and Showalter, and would “seek to reunite many of the original cast members who would play high-school-age characters despite the fact many of the actors are currently in their 40s.”

The movies cast included: Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Showalter, Michael Ian Black, Paul Rudd, Christopher Meloni, Molly Shannon, Ken Marino, Joe Lo Truglio, Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, and Elizabeth Banks to name a few.

Variety’s Andrew Wallenstein reports, “While it might seem a tall order to reunite the original cast, the plan is to make it happen by having each of the actors shoot their scenes in just a few days because not every character will appear in every episode.”

It sounds similar to the situation Arrested Development faced for its Netflix revival.

Wain and Showalter collaborated with Poehler and Rudd on They Came Together, which is due in theaters next month.

We learned last week that Netflix is also pursuing a new series about Queen Elizabeth II called The Crown.
