  • Weight Loss Trends For The New Year

Weight Loss Trends For The New Year

Weight loss has been a continuous health trend as half of American adults look to lose excess weight.  However, weight loss isn’t something that can be easily accomplished.  During the pandemic, 42% of American adults unintentionally gained an average of 29 pounds.  60% of these adults have even stated that losing weight became more difficult to accomplish since the pandemic started.

Many Doctors Don’t Understand Weight Loss

Data shows that few doctors know how to address weight loss with only 56% of physicians feeling qualified to treat obesity and 46% feeling successful in their treatments.  There are actually less than 50% of doctors in the U.S. trained in obesity management, which has spurred on the need for a new approach to medical weight loss.  Johns Hopkins found that 21% of overweight patients felt judged by their primary care doctor and were consequently less likely to trust the person’s advice.

Another study from Johns Hopkins also found that overweight patients have a higher possibility of repeatedly switching doctors with off-putting comments or unsolicited weight advice playing a possible role.  Furthermore, these “doctor shoppers” are 85% more likely to end up in the emergency room than normal-weight patients as 55% of patients with obesity have reported canceling an appointment because they are anxious about being weighed.

    Medications Are Under Prescribed

Studies have also shown that weight loss medications are underutilized with just 24% of doctors accounting for 90% of weight loss prescriptions.  Less than 3% of eligible patients are actually prescribed weight-loss medications such as phentermine, which was first FDA-approved in 1959.  There are many safe and effective medications for weight loss on the market.  For example, bupropion and naltrexone help patients lose 7-8% of their body weight after 24 weeks.  Semaglutide helps patients lose 14.9% of their body weight after 68 weeks.

Weight loss is that the process itself can be as miserable as being overweight. It has deep impact on people’s health with the overweight or obese population making up 80% of people with serious mental illnesses.  Obesity is also linked to a death rate that is three times that of the overall population.  Depression that is associated with weight can cause physical symptoms that range from changes in appetite to trouble sleeping.

Investigations of successful weight loss patients in 1985 showed that half of these patients dropped out of the program and quickly gained weight. This is often after an emotionally painful experience.  The evidence showed that adverse childhood experiences have a significant, long-term impact on health, including weight.  Studies on food addiction have revealed that people it serves soothing anxiety or depression, but leads to similar behavior and physical patterns as substance abuse.

    In Conclusion

Keeping weight off is as hard as initially losing the weight, and weight loss doesn’t automatically bring mental wellbeing either.  A holistic approach can meet you where you are and allows you to treat yourself right. Your weight-loss journey can end with success.

  • Super Food Trends For 2016: Seaweed Is A Big Deal

Super food has become sort of a background buzzword for those looking to make 2016 the year that they will finally get their health in check.

However, the super food trends for 2016 contain a few surprises.

While salmon, kale and berries like acai and blue remain on the must-eat spectrum, this year will see more exotic fare, like seaweed, getting lots of attention.

Seaweed, according to The Fiscal Times, is “packed with antioxidants, fiber, iodine and good fats,” and is “in the spotlight as more nutrition-focused Americans search for the next super food.”

Are you set to become more nutrition-focused after the past month-or-so-long holiday binge?

I really wanted cookies again for breakfast.

I know I am. Will the new seaweed trend be worth checking into?

According to Real Simple, seaweed is “packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which may prevent sudden heart attack and stroke. Seaweed is also full of important minerals, such as bone-friendly calcium and magnesium, as well as iron, potassium, iodine, and zinc.”

Sounds really great! But, for normal Americans, it can be hard to figure out how to work the exotic super food into a regular and fast-paced lifestyle.

Dawn Jackson Blatner, a registered dietitian, has an idea.

She said, “An easy way to incorporate seaweed into the diet is by taking sheets of nori—the kind they use for sushi—and layering on some cooked brown rice and sliced vegetables. Then roll it all together to make a quick lunchtime wrap.”

Well, doesn’t sound as good as a burger and fries, but if one is really determined to get healthy in 2016, it seems the new additions to the super food list are the way to go.

Do you think you’ll try some new and more exotic super food this year?

  • Wendy Williams Wows With 50-Pound Weight Loss, TV Host Unveils Her Secret

After a three-year transformation that allowed her to lose about 50 pounds, TV talk show host Wendy Williams has shared with her fans how she did it.

According to a report, the 51-year-old star shared what she did in order to change her looks and become more fit and healthy.

Williams revealed that instead of thinking of losing fat and weight, she changed her mindset that she’s doing this in order to fight heart disease.

In addition, the TV personality said that she does not “love food as much” as she did so in the past.

In the report, she was actually surprised that she managed to lose 50 pounds in three years, especially after engaging in all the “crazy diets” that she has been to.

Some of the dieting tips she shared in a Q&A video chat with her fans include cutting intake of meat, refined sugars and dairy. She also mentioned that she has not been eating after dark.

“Just push back, fatso. Just stop eating so much,” she shared.

Aside from taking out some of her bad habits, Williams has also reportedly learned good ones.

“I’ve picked up on other great habits like juicing,” she said.

The host has also began eating more nutritious foods like kale chips, and drinking coconut water instead of San Pellegrino soda, which she was reportedly addicted to in the past.

Moreover, Williams emphasized that trying to lose weight cannot be done overnight. The person should be patient enough and remember that “slow and steady is the name of the game.”

She has also engaged in physical activities such as gym workout, cardio exercises, and Pilates.

Before Wendy Williams decided to take dieting and fitness seriously, she has admitted that she had liposuction, tummy tuck, and even breast surgery in the past.

  • Wendy Williams Told Herself ‘Stop Eating So Much Fatso’

Wendy Williams looks great these days, and she says you can thank the tried and true method of “just not eating so much” for her weight loss.

Williams recently talked weight loss in her after show segment. Williams said she has struggled with her weight since she was a small child, recalling her first diet food (Tuna fish and mustard).

Williams talked exercise, saying she did lots of cardio and pilates.

But no crazy diet helped her with her sustained weight loss – only slow and steady eating right.

“I can’t say [not eating meat] has made me lose weight because I already lost 50 lbs. in three years, which I find to be amazing. Because, of all the crazy diets I’ve been on, none have ever been as effective as [saying to myself], ‘Just push back, fatso. Just stop eating so much.’”

Williams said she just “doesn’t love food as much as [she] used to.”

    Check out her tips below:

“Slow and steady is the name of the game. It’s not going to happen overnight. I no longer believe in fad diets, crash diets. I don’t believe in diet pills. I don’t want my heart to race and pop out of my chest. Yes, I did have a jump-start because years ago I did get the liposuction and a tummy tuck, but I have to say that, if there is a poster child for plastic surgery and the jump-off to a new lifestyle, it would be me.”

  • Wendy Williams Started Dieting in the First Grade

Wendy Williams has been overweight. Wendy Williams has been thinner. She likes thinner better.

The talk show star said recently that her son was perplexed about her exercise regimen, given that she is thin now.

“My son said something to me this weekend that made me feel really good” Williams said, “but it’s not going to steer me off my path. He said, ‘Mommy, I don’t even know why you go to the gym. … Because you’re already skinny, you’ve got no weight to lose. You don’t need to go to the gym. Why do you go? It’s just a waste of your time and your money.’ ”

Williams revealed that she has had struggles with her weight all her life, even trying crazy diets as a very young child.

“My first diet was in the first grade! Tuna fish and mustard with yogurt on the side. Weight was a big thing for me to overcome,” Wendy Williams said.

But now that she is thinner, why does Williams hit the gym so hard?

“I go to the gym because it’s not about me losing weight at this point, it’s about me trying to fight heart disease,” Williams explained. “I can’t say that that has made me lose weight because I already lost 50 lbs. in three years, which I find to be amazing. Because, of all the crazy diets I’ve been on, none have ever been as effective as [saying to myself], ‘Just push back, fatso. Just stop eating so much.’ And I don’t love food as much as I used to.”

Williams’ own weight loss was a gradual thing. She took three years to lose 50 pounds.

  • Kourtney Kardashian Continues To Drop Baby Weight, Posts New Bathroom Scale Pic

Kourtney Kardashian is proud of the pounds she’s losing and she’s letting the world know.

The eldest of the Kardashian sisters posted a photo on Instagram of her bathroom scale showing that she’s down to 116 pounds.

“It’s Monday! Ps: I’m 5 feet tall, so everyone relax I’m on a workout kick, trying to bring some Monday motivation,” Kourtney captioned the pic, probably to stave off some of the criticisms that are sure to follow.

Luckily, most of the comments were encouraging and one user even commiserated with the mother of three about the struggles petite people sometimes face when it comes to their weight. Of course, some scathing feedback was also inevitable.

But the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star seems to be happy with her progress so far.

The 36-year-old Kourtney has been very open about her determination to lose the weight she gained during her last pregnancy and has been sharing her progress on social media.

In February, Kourtney posted a photo of her looking down at her leggings encased limbs and wearing running shoes. She captioned it with the message “14 pounds to go.”

She then posted an update of her progress last month with a photo of a scale reading 120 pounds. The highly-motivated reality star wrote that it was the “first day that I have seen this number in a while.”

Kourtney has been combining a healthy diet with working out, and has even enlisted sister Khloe as her workout partner.

The KUWTK mainstay has stated that successfully dropping those baby pounds is also crucial to her health and happiness, something that her 3 children – Mason, 5, Penelope, 2, and baby Reign, 4-months – would surely appreciate.

Kourtney has also been publicly supporting her longtime partner, Scott Disick, in his own attempts to improve his life by checking into a Costa Rican rehab facility.

So when she decided it was time to lose weight, Soleil Moon Frye chose to go about it in a healthy manner.

“I really want my girls to have a healthy image to look to,” Frye told People. “I don’t want to be the mom that’s like, ‘I can’t have any ice cream.’ So the girls eat their ice cream sandwiches and I eat my Nutrisystem ice cream sandwiches. It’s been fun!”

“We’re a family, we eat together,” Frye further told Good Morning America. “I’m losing weight the healthy way. I need to lead by example. I’m not going to starve myself in front of my kids.”

“I had the baby, and I was waiting for it to start coming off. The frustrating thing for me was that one day I would lose a pound, but the next day I’d be back up two pounds. I needed help kicking it into gear.”

“I haven’t felt deprived at all,” she says of the program. “It has something for every one of my cravings. And it’s just about making smart choices. I don’t want to go on a crash diet. I want to sustain this. I needed something that I could actually do and stay healthy.”

“For me, I just want to feel great. But carrying the extra pounds started to weigh me down –- literally. I want to encourage moms to feel good about themselves.” said Soleil Moon Frye. “I think it’s important to empower ourselves. We have kids and we love our kids. But we still have ourselves. • Jessica Simpson Shows Off Slim Bod for Christmas [Pics]

Jessica Simpson is back in form. After two pregnancies in which her weight shot up, Simpson has had a storied weight loss experience and is now proudly showing off her slim body.

Earlier this year, Simpson told Good Morning America that she had stunned even herself with the amount of weight she had gained during her first and second pregnancies.

“I was so insecure – I couldn’t even believe what I weighed,” she said. “I don’t think that I ever expected myself to see the numbers that I have seen on the scale,”

While Simpson keeps a balanced view on weight gain during pregnancy, she also acknowledges that those pounds have to come back off later to stay healthy.

“You are creating a life, and honestly it’s not easy,” she said. “It is a really hard thing to go through. And you deserve to eat your ice cream, you deserve to have your pancakes. Do whatever you want to do and then afterwards just know that you have to work really hard.”

Simpson says she changed her behaviors for her second pregnancy, not letting her self indulge quite as freely, always aware that she would have to work it all back off eventually.

“I had to learn that with my first and second pregnancy,” she said. “My first pregnancy I ate a lot more, but my second pregnancy I ate enough, like I ate what I wanted to eat but I stayed active and I think because I had gained so much weight with my first that I had to stay active throughout my second because I didn’t know what to do with myself if I didn’t.”

Now that she is all trimmed down, Simpson is putting her leggy frame on display on Instagram.

  • Weight-Loss Programs For The New Year? Stick With This Tried And True Method

As we approach 2015, many weight-loss programs are due to make millions (if not billions) of dollars.

After all, the new year is a time when a number of Americans try and meet long-standing weight loss goals.

“This year, I am going to drop those pesky pounds!” becomes a rallying cry.

At least until February, about the time many people give up their weight loss goals.

Although a number of weight-loss programs are touted as “successful”, the problem for many people has never been about losing weight.

The trick to TRULY successful weight loss is keeping the weight off for good.

The dreaded “yo-yo diet” is what happens when someone loses and gains weight repeatedly.

Yo-yoing often occurs when someone repeatedly tries (and fails) to lose weight. This form of weight loss is not good for the body.

    Unfortunately, it’s very common.

Breaking the cycle of disappointment when it comes to weight loss isn’t easy, but it IS possible.

The key to long term weight loss is understanding that weight gained and lost is determined by your calorie intake/output ratio.

Millions of dollars could be saved if individuals understood that all they REALLY need to do in order to lose weight is pay close attention to their calories.

You cannot spend a few weeks on a low-calorie diet, lose weight, and then go back to eating all the foods that contributed to your weight gain in the first place.

You cannot eat more calories than you burn each day and expect to maintain your weight loss.

That’s simply not how long-term weight loss works.

You don’t have to agonize over what weight-loss program to try next, nor how much money you intend to spend.

Save yourself a lot of time, energy, and money by sticking to these simple rules for your weight-loss goals:

1.) Know how many calories you need to maintain your current weight and then eat less than that total.

2.) Add weight loss-friendly foods to your diet.

    3.) Drink lots of water.

    4.) Weigh yourself daily.

5.) Get at least 150 minutes of exercise per week.

Remember: Weight-loss programs are about making money. These programs will say whatever is necessary to separate you from said money.

No one is going to tell you that you can lose weight and keep it off on your own if there is a way they can convince you to give them your hard-earned cash while NOT giving you long-term results.

In order to keep the weight off for good, you must pay close attention to calories burned and calories ingested.

That’s really all there is to weight loss (or weight gain).

  • Weight Loss Programs: Top Three For Women

The holidays are here and for many people, that means struggling with overeating and weight gain. While both men and women can struggle with weight gain and overeating, women sometimes struggle with it the worst.

There are many weight loss programs designed to help women stay shapely and healthy, but not all of them are created equally. As with most things of this nature, some work and others don’t.

If you are hoping to lose weight or avoid putting more weight on over the holidays, try one of these top three weight loss programs for women.

    Mediterranean Diet
The problem with most diets is that they require you to eat less food and to avoid eating certain foods at all. The Mediterranean Diet is effective because it teaches you how to eat and shows you what foods are low in calories and fat and good for your body. You learn to like these good foods and don’t feel like you are being cheated or are even dieting. The diet allows a balance of carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats.

    Slim-Fast Diet
Yes, your mother’s diet is still one of the most popular and may actually be more popular now than it was twenty years ago. The Slim-Fast Diet is a convenient one, because it offers ready-made and packaged items. Each product can be eaten instead of a meal and contains vitamins and nutrients to help you stay healthy and feel full and satisfied without consuming a lot of calories. Since so many people are busy, the convenience of this diet makes it so effective.

    17 Day Diet
The 17 Day Diet is more about losing weight instead of just getting healthy and it is designed to help you lose a lot of weight in a fairly small amount of time. The diet works by using calorie cycling in four phases, each lasting 17 days. The diet trains your body to eat less and is often repeated over and over again with short breaks between each start.

Don’t let the holidays ruin your plans to lose weight and get in shape. Try one of these weight loss programs and stick to your plans.

  • Kate Hudson Offers Advice for Getting In Shape — ‘You Have to Work Your Ass Off’

Kate Hudson offered a bit of advice to those who want to get in shape or who want to watch their weight during the holidays, and it’s pretty simple really — work hard.

The actress told Us Weekly on Nov. 21 at her mother Goldie Hawn‘s charity event Love In For Kids that the secret to looking good is working “your ass off.”

After admitting that, like most girls, she loves “real serious double double burger, fries, and Coke,” the 35-year-old blonde beauty admitted that she has to works out like crazy to keep her fabulous shape.

“You [have to] work your ass off, that’s the only way. [And] you have to eat right,” Hudson said. “Everybody wants some sort of secret and there just isn’t, it’s just you have to work out.”

Hudson said she has been practicing Pilates for 15 years and said consistency is the key.

“I wouldn’t say [I work out] a lot, just consistently…People think for some reason you have to work out for two and a half hours…but, it can be little,” said Hudson. “It can be 20 minutes, it could be 40 minutes, but you have to [get it in]. You can’t do like two weeks and go like do two days and then take a week off and then do three days and then go, ‘Why aren’t I [seeing results?] I don’t get it.’ You know, you just got to do it — sad, like anything else in life!”

  • Weight Loss: How To Get Through The Holidays

Losing weight can be difficult any time of year, but especially during the holidays. If you have been trying to get in shape and are nervous about how you will do at big family dinners and holiday parties, don’t stress. Here are a few tips to help you with your weight loss goals and get you through the holidays.

    Start With The Healthy Foods
If you are eating at a buffet or potluck dinner during the holidays, you will likely have a variety of food items to choose from. To stick to your diet and avoid overeating and indulging in bad foods, start with the healthy foods on the table. Look for anything green and if available, always start with a salad. Soups with clear broths are also usually low in calories. It’s okay to eat a little of the unhealthy things you like, just don’t over do it. Eating the healthy things first will keep you from eating too much of the bad ones.

    Bring A Healthy Dish
You will probably be doing a lot of cooking and baking around the holidays and most people like to bring a covered dish to family celebrations and meals. If you are planning on bringing a food item anyway, why not make it a healthy one?

    Have A Snack
Since most people are busy around the holidays, it’s not uncommon for many people to go more than a couple of hours without eating or to skip meals. If you are starving when dinner time comes around, you are much more likely to overeat. Have a snack a couple of hours before dinner time and you won’t be so likely to pig out on all of those rich holiday foods.

Don’t stress out over the upcoming holidays and don’t let them ruin your diet and weight loss progress. Make smart choices and you will make it through the holidays without putting on any unwanted pounds.

  • Weight Loss Counseling Research Needed, Shows Study

As obesity rates in the U.S. continue to climb health researchers have begun to study many different factors that can affect weight. A new study suggests, however, that there may not be enough research into how doctors can encourage already-proven methods for weight loss.

The study, published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, reviewed studies about how doctors can use behavioral treatment for obese patients. The study found only 12 high-quality studies on the issue, and no studies in which doctors followed the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) guidelines for behavioral counseling.

“After an exhaustive search, we found only 12 high-quality randomized controlled trials that examined the behavioral treatment of obesity in patients encountered in primary care settings,” said Thomas Wadden, lead author of the study and director of the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Weight and Eating Disorders. “Of those, only two studies identified counseling interventions that produced an average loss of at least five percent of initial body weight, an amount likely to improve weight-related health complications.”

Wadden and his colleagues found that, of the 12 studies covered in the review, those that used behavioral interventions that included a reduced-calorie diet and prescribed physical activity were generally most effective. A higher number of counseling visits within the first six months of a behavioral treatment for obesity was also found to be associated with greater weight loss.

In 2011 the CMS approved reimbursement for behavioral weight loss counseling, but only under strict guidelines that require CMS-approved primary care practicioners. The study’s authors believe that more research is needed to determine the effectiveness of these guidelines. They also suggested that remote weight loss counseling via telephone or the internet could be effective.

“I think we will see increasing use of remotely-delivered weight loss counseling, whether by telephone, smart phones, the Internet, or other digital approaches,” said Adam Tsai, a co-author of the study and an obesity specialist at Kaiser Permanente in Denver. “Telephone-delivered counseling, provided by counselors from a patient’s primary care practice, or by a trained interventionist from a disease management call center, is likely to be more convenient and less costly for patients and potentially for health care providers and insurers.”

  • Mark Wahlberg Annoys Michael Bay with Weight Loss

Actor Mark Wahlburg recently shed roughly 60 pounds for a role, and director Michael Bay wasn’t too happy about the new look when it came time for Transformers reshoots.

Wahlburg shed the weight to play a down and out literature professor in the crime drama The Gambler, which is set to open in theaters on December 19.

During an interview before The Gambler AFI Fest premiere Monday night, Wahlburg related the story of Bay’s reaction to his new look at a housewarming party. The Transformers: Age of Extinction director said, “You look like crap! What are you going to do? We’ve got to shoot in five weeks.”

Wahlburg went on to discuss the regimen of jumping jacks and a liquid diet required to tone down his Marky Mark-ness.

Here is the trailer for The Gambler:

Wahlburg, 43, went on to say, “I probably put on 40 pounds back. But it still wasn’t enough for him. He said, ‘Aw, I’ve got to shoot you like this to make you look cool again.’ He’s a perfectionist. He was more upset than my wife (Rhea Durham). I mean, my wife was a little freaked out that I was losing this much weight, but he was really freaked out.”

The Gambler also stars John Goodman and Jessica Lange.

Wahlburg has also appeared in the A&E reality program Wahlburgers, which documents the goings on surrounding his brother Paul’s Boston-based burger restaurant chain. Brother Donnie, of New Kids on the Block fame, also stars.

Here is the second season trailer for Wahlburgers:

Donnie recently married former The View co-host Jenny McCarthy, and Mark’s absence at the nuptials made the news. Though, the Boogie Nights actor did post a congratulatory Facebook clip:

Bay is said to be in pre-production on the generically titled Transformers 5, which is planned to be released in 2016. No word on whether Wahlburg’s “Cade Yeager” character will be featured in the fifth installment of the Transformers franchise.

So, when Kris was asked about how she deals with the public’s reaction Rob’s weight gain, she simply said, “everybody’s a critic,” reports US Weekly.

She went on to explain how she always taught her six children the importance of self-confidence. That life lesson was reportedly introduced when they were very young. She also touched on the relentless media scrutiny Kim suffered for her weight gain during pregnancy.

“Putting the girls and Rob, now, on magazines definitely sells them, but I taught the kids a long time ago that it starts with when they were younger,” Kris said. “I’ve tried hard to raise strong daughters and give them a sense of self-esteem.”

Although the famous family has celebrity status now, the 58-year-old matriarch also revealed her children suffered from self esteem issues just like anyone else who’s ever gone through puberty.

“They were just like other kids,” she claimed, “where it was that real chubby stage. Everybody went through it. They had braces, they were awkward. Rob was chubby and that’s when kids need you the most.”

The awkward stage is quite difficult for most children. So, Kris was asked how she helped her children prevail.

“We’re such a close family we’re always encouraging one another,” Kris said. “I think just to be a real supportive parent and tell them how much they are loved and how beautiful they are on the inside. As long as they were okay on the inside, then everything else would be gravy.”

Several media outlets have reported about Kris and Khloe’s support of Rob’s weight loss journey. So, evidently her method of supporting her children has not changed!

Rob and Khloe’s trainer, Gunnar Peterson, shared details about Rob’s weight loss progress over the summer. Evidently he’s finally on the right track!

“He’s getting it done,” Peterson said. “He works hard, and I love having him in here. He’s no stranger to the grind.”

  • Al Sharpton Reveals Secret To His Dramatic Weight Loss: No Dinner

Reverend and civil rights activist Al Sharpton recently weighed in at 129.6 pounds, which is less than half of his previous weight of 305 pounds and only one pound away from being classified as underweight. Sharpton revealed that the secret to his dramatic weight loss over the years was that he stopped eating so much and started exercising more.

However, it’s more the former than the latter, looking at his daily intake. Sharpton reportedly consumes just about 1,000 calories a day, spends about 20 minutes on the treadmill each day, and doesn’t eat after 6 PM.

“I could take all the cartoons in the tabloid newspapers, but I couldn’t take my daughter punching me in the belly and asking why I was so fat. That was my inspiration to lose the weight. And probably the last time anyone hurt my feelings,” said Sharpton.

Six years ago, Sharpton was eating fried chicken three times a day, but now he’s down to just a little more than one salad a day. “I was absolutely content just doing the salad. As a kid who grew up chubby, I just marveled at the fact that I could be thin,” Sharpton said.

Sharpton also dished on his daily menu, which is composed of three pieces of wheat toast and a Doctor Earth green juice from Juice Press for breakfast; a salad of lettuce, tomato, onion, a chopped hard-boiled egg, and balsamic vinaigrette for lunch; and another green juice for dinner.

David Seres of the Institute of Human Nutrition at Columbia University Medical Center said that Sharpton’s current weight is better than his previous of over 300 pounds, but it might make him vulnerable to sickness. “His intake would make a nutrition expert nervous,” said Seres.

Sharpton, however, isn’t bothered by his simple diet. “I’m conditioned now so that I never get hungry,” he said.

  • Does Fast Weight Loss Really Work? Four Factors Said To Help Keep Pounds Off

When it comes to weight loss, many dieters want the pounds gone as fast as humanly possible.

Standing in the way of this dream has been the long-standing belief that losing weight too quickly is both too dangerous and merely temporary.

The danger of fast weight loss comes from the questionable methods that individuals use to shed those pesky pounds. Many fad diets are not approved by doctors and involve people going to unhealthy extremes in the so-called name of health.

Why is weight lost quickly supposedly temporary?

There are various explanations, but the most common seems to be that persons who drop weight too quickly never really changed their eating and lifestyle patterns.

Failure to do so leads them to go right back to the behaviors that caused them to gain so much weight.

However, there is at last some scientific research to show that maybe medical and health experts had it all wrong.

According to a study out of Australia, it doesn’t matter how quickly OR slowly you lose weight.

Persons tested all regained most of the weight, regardless of their pace!

Said Corby Martin and Kishore Gadde of the US-based Pennington Biomedical Research Center in a statement:

For weight loss, a slow and steady approach does not win the race. The myth that rapid weight loss is associated with rapid weight regain is no more true than one of Aesop’s fables.

While this news may be deflating to some dieters, you shouldn’t give up.

There ARE ways to lose weight fast and keep it off successfully:

1.) Eliminate fattening, unhealthy foods from your diet. PERMANENTLY.

You can’t regain all that weight if your meals mainly consist healthy vegetables and fruit, right?

Get rid of anything you see as contributing to undermining your weight loss; this often means sugar and starches!

2.) Some mistakenly think they can return to life in the fast food drive-thru line so long as they make time for the gym on occasion “to burn it off”.

    Wrong!

The truth is that most successful weight loss can be attributed to changing your dietary habits. It’s possible to lose a great deal of weight with no exercise whatsoever!

Exercise regularly, but DON’T FORGET to clean up your eating habits.

3.) Weigh yourself regularly and keep track of what you eat!

Some swear that they can keep their weight loss goals a reality so long as they weigh themselves daily and write down every calorie that goes into their mouths.

Apparently this helps them to monitor their weight and reverse any negative eating habits that they observe as causing them to gain weight.

    or

    4.) Learn to eat intuitively.

Where careful monitoring fails, some say that learning to eat intuitively helps. This means training your body to only eat when you are hungry.

Eating only at certain times, versus eating when you’re bored or upset can help you take control of your health and weight.

Have you lost a lot of weight? Were you able to keep it off? If so, share your story below. What advice can you offer anyone hoping to lose weight FAST?

  • Missy Elliot Unrecognizable After Losing 70 Pounds

Missy Elliot, who hasn’t been seen in public since earlier this summer, was almost unrecognizable as she performed at Alexander Wang’s H&M Collection launch in New York City on Thursday, October 15.

The Is That Your Chick rapper, who is said to have lost a whopping 70 pounds, flaunted her new slim figure as she performed her hit songs Get Ur Freak On, Work It, and Lose Control.

Elliot seemed happier than ever and wore a purple “Wang” baseball hat, black leather pants, and a black pullover as she took the stage.

After her performance, Elliot changed into a black Nike sweatshirt and a baseball cap that read “You Can’t Workout With Us.” She later posted the picture to her personal Twitter page and captioned it by saying, “Just got off stage thanks @ALEXANDERWANGNY and @hmusa for having me perform I enjoyed.”

Elliot was diagnosed with Grave’s disease in 2008, and has been focused on her health and overall well-being since. “You live with it for the rest of your life,” she said of the autoimmune disease.

With the help of medication and radiation treatment, Elliot was able to fight the disease and said she was feeling better than she ever had.

“I feel great,” Elliot said in 2011. “Under my doctor’s supervision, I’ve been off medication for about a year and I’m completely managing the condition thru diet and exercise.”

Elliot revealed on Twitter how she was able to drop the pounds. She admits that it is not easy, but her health comes first. “I do insanity workout to @shauntfitness videos. Sweets/bread/ fried foods is my weakness it’s not easy but health comes 1st:),” she tweeted.

  • Weight Loss: Faster Diets Are Good Too, Shows Study

American adults are more obese than ever and still growing larger. It’s a problem that millions struggle with and one that helps make weight loss a billion-dollar industry.

Though fad diet books are immensely popular, slow and steady weight loss has long been recommended by health professionals. Now new research is showing that quick-loss diets might actually have some merit.

The study, published today in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, pitted current dietary guidelines against more rapid weight loss techniques. Researchers found that obese people are more likely to lose a substantial amount of weight if that weight is lost rapidly.

The study looked at 200 obese adults who were put on either a 12-week diet of 450 to 800 calories per day or a more gradual 36-week diet. Participants on the 12-week diet were more likely to reach the 12.5 percent weight loss goal of the study. Those on the 36-week diet were more likely to drop the program early.

“Global guidelines recommend gradual weight loss for the treatment of obesity, reflecting the widely-held belief that fast weight loss is more quickly regained,” said Katrina Purcell, co-author of the study and a dietitian at the University of Melbourne. “However, our results show that an obese person is more likely to achieve a weight loss target of 12.5 percent weight loss, and less likely to drop out of their weight loss program, if losing weight is done quickly.”

Purcell and her colleagues suggested that the small amount of carbohydrates seen in quick-loss diets could help promote satiety. The study’s authors also hypothesized that ketone production resulting from low-calorie diets could be influencing the greater weight loss seen in the study.

As for the canard that diets simply don’t work, the study did find that dieters are likely to gain back weight after ending a diet. Whether weight is lost quickly or slowly, dieters were found to have regained an average of around 71 percent of their lost weight three years after the diet ended.

  • Weight Loss Success Means No More Scales Or Counted Calories?

For many years, weight loss has been a matter of willpower and vigilance.

If you wanted a smaller figure it meant practically living on the bathroom scale and taking note of every single calorie that you ate.

Success or failure was measured according to decreasing numbers.

This behavior, while proudly toted by diet and weight loss experts and programs, has had a remarkably negative effect on the self-esteem and happiness of a lot of people.

    Especially women.

And now it’s looking like this approach may not even be as effective as once thought.

According to research recently published by the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, removing ALL dietary rules and restrictions did not inhibit subjects from losing weight.

Not only were people able to maintain or lose weight, researchers found the individuals had a healthier relationship with food overall, increased self-esteem and positive body image.

Why is it that throwing out the widely held beliefs about weight loss allowed individuals to achieve their goals or be happier about themselves?

Probably because out with the rules went unrealistic body standards and body-shaming rhetoric that emphasized looks over health.

And THAT is what keeps individuals unhappy with themselves and their weight, therefore feeding an unhealthy cycle that gets them nowhere.

Consider a healthy at every size (HAES) approach to weight loss, where your primary focus is your overall health and happiness.

Above all, don’t beat yourself up about what you eat or don’t eat.

While this study suggests intuitive eating is the way to go, for some people it may really not be enough. If you suspect you have an addiction, it’s still a good idea to seek advice and possible treatment.

Do you think this research shows that counting calories or constant self-weighing is ultimately useless? What works best for you?
