  • Reverse 911 Calls Are Not Fun To Get At 2 AM

A series of reverse 911 calls has apparently gotten under the skin of quite a few Virginia Beach residents.

From the thousands of complaints that followed the early morning message, it’s safe to say the affected are not morning people!

Following a major accident that lead to the closure of the 500 block of Sandbridge road on Wednesday evening, officials wanted to inform certain people of when the road would be available once more.

The reverse 911 call was meant to inform the nearby 175 households about the road’s scheduled reopening.

Instead a call was made to a whopping 99,895 households in the middle of the night.

    …Whoops.

The Emergency Communications and Citizens Services department is said to be reviewing the situation due to the numerous complaints. The organization is responsible for managing the area’s 911 and 311 calls.

Lori Stiles, 911 operations center manager, said of the reverse 911 calls that early investigative efforts suggest the mistake stemmed from an avoidable error.

Following the massive outcry regarding the 2 am calls, the Virginia Beach police posted a statement to their Facebook page:

As many of you know officers of VBPD investigated a tragic accident on Sandbridge Road last night (Wednesday, April 16). Because of the extensive investigation taking place and due to the fact that Fire, EMS, and VBPD needed the road cleared for their uninhabited access, the road had to be shut down.

At 2 a.m. on Thursday, April 17, 2014 a reverse 911 call was made to notify residents that Sandbridge Road had been reopened. This message was intended for a very small portion of the city, particular those in the Sandbridge area. This message obviously went beyond that target audience.

We ask for patience from everyone as this matter is being looked into. Please keep in mind this is a tool for public safety and is used to benefit the public as well as first responders who deal with such emergencies.

The police also mentioned the outpouring of complaints on their official Twitter account:

What do YOU think: Are these complaints legitimate or are these people just being big babies? Share in the comments below!

  • Cargo Ship Grounded In Virginia Due To Weather

A 751 ft barge was tossed about in the Chesapeake Bay like a bath toy, a testament to the ferocious power of Mother Nature.

The cargo ship, known as the Ornak, had been anchored to the east of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel on Wednesday morning. While waiting to pick up wheat, the vessel was unexpectedly caught up in a thunderstorm that was a lot stronger than anyone had initially anticipated.

The storm’s winds gusted to 70 mph; sustained winds between 30 and 45 mph were reported by the National Weather Service. The waves reached several feet in height at the peak of the thunderstorm.

It was the high winds that eventually caused the Ornak to run aground near First Landing State Park. The scene was merely a few hundred feet away from a Virginia beach. Curious onlookers soon gathered to take photos.

One local named Dick Ullman described the sight as “pretty amazing”. He also shared that it was a personal “first”.

Said Ullman, “I’ve been coming down this way for about 50 years, and I don’t remember a ship being blown ashore like this.”

It was no doubt far less amazing for the crew aboard the Ornak, but Coast Guard Capt. John Little said that no one aboard the cargo ship had been injured by the incident.

The vessel is currently resting in about 16 ft of water. Weather will play a part in how much time it will take to get the cargo ship back out to into the bay. The process could be hindered for a few days due to sustained high winds.

Coast Guard officials stated that the Ornak is owned by a company named Polsteam and has a crew of 22 men. The vessel reportedly flies under a Bahamian flag.

In addition to bringing the Ornak aground, the storm is also blamed for a collision involving two ships and a power outage affecting close to 28,000 people in the area.

“I’ve not seen anything quite like this,” said Little when speaking of the unexpected severity of the storm.

The Coast Guard official revealed that several other ships were in danger of running aground like the Ornak. Disaster was averted due to towing ships and the harbor pilots who came aboard to guide the vessels to safety.

  • Dave MacDowell: Art, Lebowski, And The Internet

Dave MacDowell has made quite a name for himself in the art world over the years, garnering a huge following on Facebook as word spread of the brilliantly talented artist with a stellar sense of humor.

Using anything and everything related to pop culture–characters from movies like “The Big Lebowski” play a recurring role in his work–and making it his own, MacDowell takes the things that resonate with our society and turns them into a work of art that we can both relate to and laugh at. His pieces are a commentary on our obsession with both pop-culture and the way information is spread in a digital world.

“Everything pop-culture is fair game!” he told WebProNews. “Aside form television and books, most entertainment streams through the computer. If the internet ever becomes regulated, most artists and galleries will be screwed royally….I imagine we’ll just all go underground with magazines and more pop-up art shows. You can’t stop the movement, and the work will find a way to get seen by any means necessary.”

The Virginia Beach-based artist says the internet plays a big role in both inspiration for the art and putting it out into the world; he even estimates that as much as 75% of gallery sales happen virtually.

“The internet is a powerful tool for every artist these days,” MacDowell says. “The images fly fast and free, and prospective opportunities are a click away. Everything is virtual these days, because reality sucks.”

For art lovers/pop-culture enthusiasts like myself, MacDowell’s work is particularly brilliant because he’s not afraid to poke a little fun at iconic figures from film and music; everyone from Steve Martin–who was turned into Scumbag Steve Martin for a meme-inspired work entitled “Dirty Rotten Scumbag Steve” earlier this year–to Notorious B.I.G. has been immortalized by MacDowell’s brush.

His creations, which usually entail taking two or more pop-culture references and merging them in some fantastic, colorful, hilarious way, have won the admiration of art enthusiasts everywhere, including some big-wigs at NBC/Universal. They put MacDowell in touch with Carson Daly, who interviewed the artist last year for his show, Last Call With Carson Daly.

But as much as the internet helps get his artwork out there, MacDowell says it will never replace seeing a work of art in person and experiencing the small textural details that get lost in digital translation.

“I’ve seen million dollar deals signed just by images chosen over a computer screen,” he says. “With that said, the internet will never recreate the experience of seeing and experiencing art live and in person. A lot gets lost through pixels and there ain’t nuthin’ like the real thing.”

  • Navy Jet Crashes Into VA Beach Apartment Building

Just before 12:30 this afternoon, a military jet went down in Virginia Beach, crashing into an apartment complex and setting two of the buildings on fire. Two of the crew members aboard the F-18 jet ejected before the crash; one of the pilots was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

The jet was coming from Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach and was part of a training squadron. Officials aren’t sure what caused the jet to go down, but witnesses on the ground say it was straining in the air with the nose pointing up and leaked fuel on the way down.

There are no reports of injuries on the ground as yet, but a local television station has put up photos of the damage done to the apartment buildings here.

Witness Sean Pepe was driving on the interstate when he saw the plane appear to float above the treeline before going down.

“It was odd, but we didn’t think anything of it,” Pepe said. “We thought it was doing maneuvers. We were watching the plane but didn’t see the impact. We saw it go down and there was a ‘boom.’ Then there was black smoke everywhere.”
