  • Vimeo Launches Tip Jar, Paid Videos Coming Soon

For the most part, Vimeo provides an ad-free video viewing experience. One of their only sources of revenue comes in the form of selling pro services to both users and creators (Vimeo Plus and Vimeo PRO). In order to help video creators receive quick and easy funding for their content, Vimeo has just announced a new Creator Services platform.

“Today, we’re taking one of the most important steps in our evolution as a service, a company, and a community. We’re proud to introduce Vimeo Creator Services, our new suite of simple, powerful tools to help creators make more money for doing what they do best: entertaining us, engaging us, baffling and outright dazzling us with amazing work,” said Vimeo’s Blake Whitman.

The first product on the Creator Services platform is Tip Jar, which allows viewers to make contributions to video makers to the tune of $1-500. If a video maker has activated Tip Jar for their videos, users will see a “Tip the video” button right below the video player.

    Vimeo Tip Jar

And Tip Jar is only the beginning of the monetization options coming to Vimeo. Coming next year is a new Pay-to-view service which will allow video makers to charge viewers to watch their content.

“In the coming months, we are incredibly excited to introduce our first pay-to-view service, giving video creators of all types flexible tools to charge for access to your videos, with no coding required. We’re not saying too much at the moment, but we can promise you’re going to like it,” says Vimeo.

Of course, Tip Jar isn’t designed to only help video creators. Vimeo will take a 15% cut on all tips made on the site.

  • iPhone 5 Has a Laser Keyboard, Holographic Images According to This FOX Affiliate

With all of those concept videos floating around out there, I’m kind of surprised that this didn’t happen sooner.

People are already waiting in line to purchase the iPhone 5, which is set to hit the shelves on September 21st. That’s crazy enough. But that’s not what’s really special about this clip.

FOX 5 in New York sent a reporter to an Apple Store to snag an exclusive interview with a fanboy. Everything seems to be going according to the plan until she starts talking about the features of the new iPhone.

    Check it out below:

Of course, the iPhone 5 is launching with a 4-inch screen, better camera, LTE, faster A6 processor, and more – but no lasers. That concept comes to us courtesy an August, 2011 video from Aatma Studios.

This isn’t the first time that FOX 5 has hit viral pay dirt, so to speak. You might remember their studio team for the YouTube classic “keep f*ckin’ that chicken” moment.

  • Gangnam Style Hitler Is the Viral Hit’s Logical Conclusion

South Korean viral megahit “Gangnam Style” has reached the pinnacle of YouTube stardom. Having garnered nearly 210 million views since its debut on July 15th, it’s officially the most-viewed K-pop video in history. The song has been remixed, sampled, covered, and parodied by almost everyone who remixes, samples, covers, and parodies on the internet. And it’s gone mainstream, with singer PSY appearing on the likes of The Today Show.

The point is that “Gangnam Style” has already won the internets, therefore its logical conclusion must involve a definitive mashup with another all-time internet winner.

And oh look – here it is!

What do you get when you cross South Korean pop with clips from one of the most utilized videos online? You get Gangnam Style Hitler, of course.

Although incredibly well done and hilarious, it’s totally ok if you want to be done with the internet for the day after watching this:

  • This Autotuned Video Game-Inspired Mashup Is the Best Breakdown of the Political Conventions You’re Likely to See

When you boil it down, American politics kind of resemble an 8-bit video game, right? And whoever can mention Neil Armstrong the most receives space man power-ups, which can pave the way to victory. And don’t forget about spousal elitist deflections.

That doesn’t really make sense, I know that. But if you watch this amazing musical wrap up of the 2012 political conventions courtesy of The Gregory Brothers, you’ll get it. Sure, Mitt Romney and President Obama differ on many core issues. But when it comes to buttering up the country during primetime, there really is no difference. The play is the same from both candidates.

“Sometimes these stringent scorekeeping rules result in eerily similar speeches from both sides of the political arena. It can be tough to tell who loves America the most. To help the novice political spectator more easily follow the score of Obama vs. Romney, we’ve tracked it for you in this video Op-Doc, using state-of-the-art video gaming technology. And music. Though we can’t yet know who will win in November, we hope this Op-Doc provides you with some insight into how the game is played,” they say.

  • Kittens in Capes Flying through the Air in Slow Motion [VIDEO]

It’s Friday, and that means…well, I don’t know what it means exactly. But hey, look! Kittehs!

I don’t know if you needed to end your work week with a short video of kittens in capes flying through the air in slow motion, set to a “hip hop dubstep” track – but that’s what you’re going to get

    Check it out below:

If you’re wondering about the flying cats’ safety…

“Before you go all crazy on me for “hurting” cats, you should know that the cats were handled with GREAT care. We decided to keep the shot tight on the cats so that they did not need to be airborne very long. The cats were tossed a few feet into an enormous and ultra soft sheepskin blanket. The cats were treated like royalty. They were fed gourmet cat food and lots of water. We took many breaks where the kittens rested and played in the shade. They were full of energy the entire shoot which lasted a mere one hour. This video was shot six months ago and the cats are alive and in perfect health today. I love cats and would never even consider harming them…so please stop sending me death threats,” says the creator.

    Ok man, we believe you.

  • iPhone 5 Reviews Reach Their Logical Conclusion as Guy Actually Has Sex with One

I don’t know about you, but I don’t think you can properly review any new product until you’ve had the chance to make sweet, sweet love to it. And with all the Apple fanboys out there already blowing it over the new iPhone 5, is it really that much of a surprise that one reviewer would just cut to the chase and have sex with the new device?

Ok, not everyone is so high on the new iPhone. But you’ve probably already heard someone describe it as “innovative,” “groundbreaking,” or “probably the best phone ever.” This hilarious video from Jest simply takes the iPhone reviewing process to its logical conclusion.

Yes, that port is smaller than previous iPhones’. But the phone is a little bit longer…

  • Ok, Finland, You’ve Scared Me into Never Drinking Around My Kids [VIDEO]

I don’t have children, but if I did I imagine I probably wouldn’t want to get hammered drunk in front of them. Apparently, that sentiment isn’t shared by everyone, and Finnish group Lasinen lapsuus (Fragile Childhood) is fighting to get the message out that children are truly affected by their parents’ alcohol abuse.

“The campaign activities are also to highlight the fact that is still not widely understood how much harm parental drinking problems causes to children. For example, previous research has shown that every fourth Finnish child has suffered some harm because of its parent’s alcohol usage,” they say.

And to make this message hit home, they’ve taken to YouTube with a nightmarish PSA.

The following Public Service Announcement is brought to you by terror, giant fish-rabbits, wtf, and the letter NOPE.

“How do our children see us when we’ve been drinking?” it asks. Check it out below:

  • Watch the Curiosity Rover’s Descent at 30 FPS

NASA’s original video of the Curiosity rover’s descent was amazing, fascinating, incredible, awe-inspiring, and worthy of every other superlative you can think of. But the video was on rendered at 4 FPS. Last month, one YouTube user uploaded an amazing 25 FPS version of the video using interpolation.

Now, another guy has upped the ante. Using “true motion-flow interpolation,” Bard Canning has created the best Curiosity descent video yet, coming to you at 30 FPS.

“The video is true motion-flow interpolated from the original 4 frames per second to 30 frames per second. (To my knowledge, no one has used this method for the Curiosity footage yet.) It plays real-time at the speed that Curiosity descended onto the surface of Mars,” he says.

    Check out the ultra-resolution, smooth-motion, detail-enhanced, color-corrected video below:

According to Canning, the project was a “labor of love” that took him a month to complete. As you watch the video (over and over again, I’d imagine), remember that due to interpolation, most (87%) of what you’re seeing is created footage. But wow, is it impressive.

  • Over Half of Online Adults Post Pictures and Videos

Pew Research says that photos and videos have become “key social currencies,” and they have some new figures to back that up.

According to a recent report from their Internet & American Life Project, 56% of adult internet users posts photos or videos online. That means interacting visually with networks like Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and Instagram.

Pew breaks down these media distributors into two categories: Creators and Curators.

Creators are those who share photos and videos that they have taken themselves. They found that 45% of internet users post their own photos to social networks, while 18% post their own videos.

Curators are those who share photos and videos that they’ve found online, but didn’t produce themselves. According to the report, 35% of internet users curate photos, while 25% curate videos.

“The internet has always been a platform for creators and curators,” said Pew Internet’s Joanna Brenner, co-author of the report. “Now, as social media services continue to grow and expand, the tools are more visual and social, and that seems to be attracting special audiences of early adopters.”

The true content distributors, those that both create and curate, make up about one-third of the online adult population (32%).

In terms of creators, they are predominately younger. 67% of those aged 18-29 share their own photos, along with 50% of those aged 30-49. The same goes for videos, as 33% of 18-29-year-olds and 18% of 30-49-year-old share their own content. As far as curators go, the younger crowd also rules. Women, as a group, are also more likely to be curators or photos and videos.

  • This Is Probably the Most Amazing K’NEX Machine You’ve Ever Seen

So, what have you done with the last eight months of your life? Whatever it is, it’s unlikely that it’s more impressive than what this guy’s done, in terms of sheer dedication.

Anyone who’s ever built any working machine or spent their childhood playing with K’Nex will be filled with utter delight after watching this video, which showcases one of the most complex machines that I’ve ever seen crammed inside a bedroom.

YouTube user austron explains his incredible work of art, “Clockwork”:

This is Clockwork, my fifth major K’nex ball machine, and my largest and most complex K’nex structure to date. It took 8 months to build, has over 40,000 pieces, over 450 feet of track, 21 different paths, 8 motors, 5 lifts, and a one-of-a-kind computer-controlled crane, as well as two computer-controlled illuminated K’nex balls.

  • Foo Fighters Acoustically Rock the iPhone 5 Event [VIDEO]

In an unexpected turn of events, Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters somehow found themselves performing under a giant Apple logo at yesterday’s big iPhone 5 event.

The band was the closing act, appearing on stage after Tim Cook and Phil Schiller had announced the new iPhone 5, a new iTunes, new iPod touch, and a new iPod Nano. Foo Fighters played a three-track set, including “Times Like These,” “My Hero,” and “Walk.” I’m not sure if we’re supposed to read into those choices or anything, so I won’t.

Anyway, Grohl and company went acoustic for the set and took some time in between songs to talk about the occasion for which they’e playing.

“One of the great things about being here is getting to meet all the people, the incredible people that are shaping our future,” said Grohl between “Times Like These” and “My Hero.”

“Just like when you get to meet someone like Little Richard, Tom Petty, Jimmy Page, you realize these are just people that took it upon themselves to do something different – to change the world and shape our future. but you meet them and they’re flesh and bone. They’re people, and it’s totally inspiring.”

His recent memorial service included many Hollywood stars, including Jay Leno and Tom Hanks, his co-star in the aforementioned Green Mile.

Memorial services often include funny stories as a way to remember the good moments in the life of the deceased. And in this capacity, constant class act Tom Hanks delivered.

  • DADADA, DADADA: Here’s the Guy Who Created The SportsCenter Theme

“Everybody knows SportsCenter, everybody watches it, it’s absolutely a universal thing,” Colby said. “It is a tremendously gratifying thing for an artist…to be a part of it, whatever the small part is.”

Those are the word of 63-year-old John Colby, a Grammy and Emmy award-winning composer who has written the soundtracks to many of the greatest sporting events in the last two decades. If you’ve never heard of him, you’re probably not alone.

But as a part of ESPN’s Front Row, Colby is getting the recognition he deserves.

Although he’s written the score for various college football, basketball, NFL, ESPYS, golf, and NASCAR programs, it’s for one epic theme that he’s most famous for.

DaDaDa, DaDaDa. Every time you hear it, you know what’s coming – a new hour of SportsCenter.

Check out John Colby telling the story of the SportsCenter theme in his own words:

SportsCenter is about to hit a huge milestone: 50,000 episodes. The big episode is expected to go down on Thursday, September 13th at 6 pm ET.

  • Meme Supercut Shows the Origin of All Your Favorites

    Context is everything, right?

Memes. Memes everywhere. Some of them have stayed true to the the message of that which spawned them, and others have taken on a life of their own. Once the internet wraps its cold, clammy hands around something there’s no telling how many permutations it will go through before it reaches your screen.

If memes are poised to become the dominant form of online communication (and some may argue that they already have), we probably owe it to ourselves to find out where they came from. Or, you know, watch a cool video and forget it later.

Either way, YouTube user hatinhand made a helpful supermix of the various clips from movies, television, and the internet (memes are rather meta at times) that serve as the basis for most everything you see on reddit on a daily basis.

Check out a mess of memes below:

How many did you recognize? I can name them all. Not sure if proud of myself or severely depressed.

  • Internet Hero Builds His Cat a Box Tower to Win Back His Love

Humans love cats. Cats love boxes. Humans oftentimes have easy access to boxes. WHY DOES THIS NOT HAPPEN MORE OFTEN?

In “I really really love my cat” news, this hero of the internet decided to give his pet one of the best presents ever: a giant empty box tower. He says that he got the idea to build the 40-box feline playground when his cat, Rufus, “began to resent him” after he had to administer painful ear drops to cure an infection.

What a way to win back Rufus’ love!

Of course, this guy isn’t the only person to build their cat a box tower. But he is one of the few to put the entire process into a fun little video package. What do they always say? It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey? Check out his journey to cat love redemption below:

  • The Internet Has Found a Jehovah’s Witnesses Anti-Masturbation Sign Language Video and Remixed It Accordingly

Jehovah’s Witnesses teach followers to refrain from masturbation, as they say it’s unclean and greedy. Over the years, the Jehovah’s Witnesses semi-monthly publication The Watchtower has touched on the issue – saying at one point that the practice can lead to sexual promiscuity and even homosexuality.

Apparently, the anti-masturbation stance is still important enough to the faith for them to create videos about it and place them online. The official Jehovah’s Witnesses website has published a video series in American Sign Language, promoting their various messages to the deaf population.

One of these videos, “Gain the Victory over Masturbation,” has been discovered by denizens of the internet. And I’m sure you can guess where this goes from here.

Remixes. Remixes everywhere. Capitalizing on some of the more expressive motions and facial movements of those in the video, people have set it to some interesting soundtracks.

    Like R. Kelly:

    Or Gangnam style:

    How about some dubstep?

    And 50 Cent:

If you want to check out the original video, it’s number 22 on this list.

  • Morgan Freeman Reads 50 Shades of Grey…Kind Of

If you close your eyes and listen to the following clip, you’ll swear that Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman has gone off the deep end and submitted to reading excerpts from masturbatory mega-hit Fifty Shades of Grey.

Well, he hasn’t. But this is just about as close as we’re ever going to get to hearing the legendary screen presence talk about ”kinky f*ckery.”

Impressionist Josh Robert Thompson does an amazing Morgan Freeman impression. Seriously, it’s probably the best one in the world right now, and there are a lot of people out there that think they can do a good Morgan Freeman. Thompson has worked on epsidoes of Family Guy, American Dad, and various films & video games. But it’s his Morgan Freeman impression that has garnered him some internet fame as of late. You may remember a certain viral hit that involved Thompson, Freeman, and titty sprinkles.

Now, he’s put his wonderful skills on display again. Sit back, close your eyes, and imagine Morgan Freeman narrating one of the biggest literary hits of the past year (with a bit of extra commentary sprinkled in). I probably don’t have to say this, but I will: NSFW.

  • Here’s the Best Breaking Bad Series Recap You’ll Ever See

Fan videos for iconic TV shows and films can be a rough sea to navigate. Simply put, some of them suck and some of them are amazing. Then there are a lot of video that fall in between. But there’s no doubt in my mind that this is the best Breaking Bad fan video you’re ever likely to see, and possibly one of the best fan videos in general that’s ever graced YouTube.

That’s a lot of hype to live up to, I know. But YouTube user UltraBrawl tells the story of Walter White in a masterful way. Using clips from all five seasons of the classic series, they created a chilling eight minutes detailing the evolution of one of the more complex characters in TV history.

As you begin the long, painful waiting period until the conclusion of the series airs in 2013, do yourself a favor and check out this wonderful trip through Walter White’s transformation.

Here it is, “The Journey of Walter White” (SPOILERS):
