Valerie Bertinelli Mourns Passing of Pat Harrington Jr., Schneider on “One Day at a Time”

Valerie Bertinelli took to social media earlier on Thursday to mourn the passing of one of her former costars. Pat Harrington, Jr. played the role of Schneider, the handyman on One Day at a Time. Harrington passed away on Wednesday night, according to his daughter.

Tresa Harrington, announced her father’s death via Facebook.

Dear Friends, it is with the most unimaginable pain and sadness, that I tell you my father, Pat Harrington, Jr. passed…

Posted by Tresa Harrington on Thursday, January 7, 2016

Captioning an Instagram post with the same message as her Twitter post, Valerie Bertinelli also shared a photo of herself with Pat Harrington, Jr. It is one that was clearly taken in recent years.

Pat Harrington, Jr. starred for nine seasons on One Day at a Time. He won an Emmy for his role in 1984 and a Golden Globe in 1980.

In later years he made a guest appearance on Valerie Bertinelli’s TV Land hit show, Hot in Cleveland.

In addition to Pat Harrington, Jr. and Valerie Bertinelli, One Day at a Time starred Bonnie Franklin, who died at the age of 69 in 2013, and MacKenzie Phillips.

Were you a One Day at a Time fan? If so, you no doubt understand Valerie Bertinelli’s sadness over the loss of one of the show’s mainstays–someone who was like family when she was a relative unknown.

  • Valerie Bertinelli Cooks Up Delicacies Ahead of Food Network Premiere

Valerie Bertinelli is headed to the Food Network with her very own show. But before she lands there, she has cooked up some delicacies from her cookbook One Dish at a Time.

Valerie’s Home Cooking premieres on the Food Network Saturday at 12 p.m. EDT. In addition to appearing on The Today Show this week and preparing some delicious recipes for co-hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb, she also made dinner for her Hot in Cleveland co-stars Betty White, Wendie Malick, and Jane Leeves.

“It was a little nerve-racking because Betty doesn’t like too many things,” Bertinelli said in an interview for the Associated Press. “She likes tuna fish, she likes hot dogs, she likes Red Vines (candy) and vodka. So what am I going to make for Betty?”

The One Day at a Time star turned to vodka for help. She prepared Betty White and the rest of her guests tuna salad with an Italian twist.

Right now Valerie Bertinelli is scheduled to appear on the Food Network with 10 episodes of Valerie’s Home Cooking. Ratings will determine whether or not they buy more episodes of her show.

Just because Valerie Bertinelli is Food Network bound, fans needn’t worry that she’s given up acting. In fact, she says she will soon be seeking out a new acting job. Hot in Cleveland was recently axed after six seasons on the air.

“Then they canceled us because they wanted to put on younger shows,” she explained.

Valerie Bertinelli has lots of spunk. It was obvious when she starred on One Day at a Time, and even thought that show aired decades ago, she still has a wealth of spunk left in her today. It will surely serve her well in Valerie’s Home Cooking, and in whatever acting job soon comes her way.

  • Betty White Treated to a Surprise ‘Hot in Cleveland’ Flash Mob to Celebrate Her 93rd Birthday

Betty White was treated to a very special surprise by the cast and crew of Hot in Cleveland on Friday, when they surprised her with a flash mob for her 93rd birthday.

Betty White, who turns 93 today, was transported to the lot in a golf cart at the Studio City’s television lot in California. When they arrived at the Hot in Cleveland soundstage, Betty White was surprised with the luau-themed song and dance routine created just for the birthday girl.

Dressed in grass skirts and Hawaiian shirts for the flash mob, Betty White‘s friends went all out to make her special day extra special. Co-stars Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves and Wendie Malick jumped in to provide a special hula dance that left Betty White in awe.

“At 93, you shouldn’t be doing this,” Betty White laughed.

Age is not slowing down the legendary comedienne down in the least. Over her birthday weekend, she plans on sharing her lifelong love of animals in her Great American Country special Betty White’s Smartest Animals in America.

“Can you imagine being blessed at this age with still working at the career you love the best?” Betty asked ET‘s Nancy O’Dell. “By now they should be saying, ‘Yes honey, you just stay in the rocker.’”

  • Valerie Bertinelli Vs. Christina Aguilera: Round Two

Valerie Bertinelli raised eyebrows on Wednesday when she claimed that Christina Aguilera once gave her a very rude brush-off years ago at a Van Halen concert.

Since then, Christina seems to have finally responded with a snappy Instagram photo that alludes to the so-called “feud”.

She posted a rare picture of herself in the studio.

In the caption, she writes, “In more important news…,”

Perhaps that is a hint that Valerie Bertinelli’s little story isn’t worth talking about?

    In more important news…

On Wednesday, Bertinelli appeared on Watch What Happens Live and told her story.

Valerie Bertinelli said she was thrilled to see Christina Aguilera at the concert and wanted to tell her that she is a big fan.

“No, I didn’t have a feud with her. I was a fan at that time — a long time ago — and I went up to her ’cause she was at a Van Halen concert, and I said, ‘Oh my god, I think you’re a beautiful singer.’ And she just went like, ‘Yeah, whatever.’

“She gave me the cold shoulder and I thought, ‘Bitch, I’m a fan! You can’t be nice to me?’ You know?”

Valerie Bertinelli isn’t too convinced that the diva has changed. It has been several years and the Beautiful singer has been married twice and is settling into motherhood with two children. However, Bertinelli has heard Christina is still quite the snob.

When Valerie Bertinelli was asked if she had come face-to-face with Christina Aguilera since the incident and whether she thinks she has become nicer, she said, “I have not. She might have gotten better—but I heard she hasn’t.”

Well, it seems Christina is over Valerie Bertinelli.

Do you think Christina Aguilera should apologize to Valerie Bertinelli for the ancient snub or should Bertinelli have gotten over it by now?

  • Valerie Bertinelli Calls Christina Aguilera A B*tch

During last week’s episode of Watch What Happens Live, Valerie Bertinelli opened up about an incident involving Christina Aguilera. Bertinelli, who was there to promote her show Hot in Cleveland, was asked by Andy Cohen about her ‘feud’ with the singer. “I didn’t have a feud with her,” Valerie began. “I was a fan at that time – a long time ago – and I went up to her ’cause she was at a Van Halen concert, and I said, ‘Oh my god, I think you’re a beautiful singer.’”

According to the sitcom star, Aguilera brushed her off and reportedly said, “Yeah, whatever.” “She gave me the cold shoulder and I thought, ’B****, I’m a fan. You can’t be nice to me?’” Bertinelli says she hasn’t ran into Aguilera ever since. “She might have gotten better. But I heard she hasn’t,” she said in the interview.

A few days after Bertinelli talked about the incident, Aguilera seemingly dismissed the actress yet again. On Friday, November 7, the singer posted a photo of herself inside a recording studio with the caption “In more important news…” This may be a coincidence, but the timing definitely lends itself well to rumors that this was indeed a response to Bertinelli’s story.

Back in 2008, the actress also talked about the incident in a radio interview. She said, “I met her, and she was so mean to me.” Bertinelli added, “You know what? Forget you! I don’t need your new album!’ What’s up with that? She’s too young to be blowing people off.”

Bertinelli was known for her role as Barbara Cooper Royer in the sitcom One Day at a Time. She married rock star Eddie Van Halen on April 11, 1981, and together they raised their son Wolfgang. The couple divorced back in 2007, and in 2011, she married financial planner Tom Vitale.

  • Valerie Bertinelli On “Feud” With Christina Aguilera

Valerie Bertinelli On “Feud” With Christina Aguilera

Valerie Bertinelli says the “feud” she supposedly had with Christina Aguilera years ago was really just kind of one-sided.

Christina Aguilera was notoriously obnoxious back in those days, and Valerie Bertinelli said that she felt dissed by her as a fan, and really had her feelings hurt.

At a Van Halen concert years ago, she approached Aguilera because she was a huge fan of her music at the time.

“I did not have a feud with her,” the Hot in Cleveland star clarified on Watch What Happens Live! Wednesday night.

Her friend and co-star, Jane Leeves, suggested that she “make something up” to increase the juiciness of the story. However, Valerie Bertinelli decided to keep it classy and be honest about what actually happened on that fateful night.

“I was a fan at that time, a long time ago, and I went up to her because she was at a Van Halen concert, and I said, ‘Oh my God, I think you’re a beautiful singer, blah blah blah,’ and she just went like [she does an over-her-head motion], ‘Yah, whatever.’”

Ouch. That has to hurt a little!

Poor Valerie Bertinelli! It should bring her a little comfort to know that Christina Aguilera probably did that to many a fan back then. Or it may not.

“She gave me the cold shoulder and I thought, ‘Bitch, I’m a fan! You can’t be nice to me?’ You know?”

    Yes, we know.

Valerie Bertinelli says she hasn’t spoken to the diva since that incident, but she did provide some insight into whether or not Christina’s antics have improved since becoming a mother and a respected mentor on The Voice.

She said, “…She might have gotten better, but I heard she hasn’t.”

The world now waits for Christina Aguilera to respond to Valerie Bertinelli’s accusation of diva antics…

  • Valerie Bertinelli Recounts the Day She Was Dissed by Christina Aguilera

Valerie Bertinelli has set the record straight on rumors of a reported age-old feud with Christina Aguilera.

In an interview with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live! Wednesday night, Bertinelli said the long-time rumored feud is just not true.

However, the Hot in Cleveland actress did admit to having a rather negative encounter with The Voice judge back in the day.

“I did not have a feud with her,” said Bertinelli. She proceeded to tell the story of an encounter that may have fueled the rumors.

“No, I didn’t have a feud with her,” Bertinelli insisted when her Hot in Cleveland co-star Jane Leeves suggested that she “make something up.”

The 54-year-old actress went on to tell the story as she remembers it.

“I was a fan at that time, a long time ago, and I went up to her because she was at a Van Halen concert, and I said, ‘Oh my God, I think you’re a beautiful singer, blah blah blah,’ and she just went like [she made an over-her-head motion], ‘Yah, whatever,’

“She gave me the cold shoulder and I thought, ‘Bitch, I’m a fan! You can’t be nice to me?’ You know?”

Bertinelli was asked if she has seen Aguilera since the encounter, to which the actress said, “I have not. She might have gotten better—but I heard she hasn’t.”

    OK, if there wasn’t a feud before…

Bertinelli has received some backlash from Xtina fans on Twitter following her remarks. But, she’s decided to just “shake it off.”

  • Valerie Bertinelli Inspires At Women’s Conference

Valerie Bertinelli recently spoke at the 27th Central California Women’s Conference, where she inspired thousands of women to live a more positive life.

The 54-year-old actress was the keynote speaker at the event, and spoke to over 3,500 people. This year’s theme was “Nurture You,” and Valerie gave an empowering speech on how to do just that.

“Nurturing begins with a deep breath and a scary first step across the chasm of fear,” Bertinelli said. “Try to be more like (artist) Georgia O’Keeffe, scared but fearless when it comes to what you want to do and more importantly what you need to do.”

“It’s about having the guts to say to yourself, ‘I can do better and I’m going to figure out the ways to do it,’” the Hot in Cleveland star added. “Life is all about change. The trick is to change for the better in ways that make us feel better about ourselves and our lives.”

Valerie advised her fellow women to be kind to others and focus on building each other up instead of constantly tearing each other down.

“I think more women need to be nice to each other,” she continued. “We have bad examples on television of the Real Housewives of whatever town they’re in. I would never have those people as friends. I want someone who supports me and backs me up and loves me.”

  • Valerie Bertinelli Delivers Positive Message

Valerie Bertinelli encouraged 3,451 people, mostly women, to nurture themselves as the theme of the Central California Women’s Conference suggested.

Bertinelli joins a long list of stars who have spoken at the conference, which is now in its 27th year. That list includes such noteables as Helen Hunt, Jamie Lee Curtis, Geena Davis and Marie Osmond. The Hot in Cleveland star answered questions and inspired those in attendance with her keynote address.

“Nurturing begins with a deep breath and a scary first step across the chasm of fear,” Bertinelli said. “Try to be more like (artist) Georgia O’Keeffe, scared but fearless when it comes to what you want to do and more importantly what you need to do.”

Valerie Bertinelli was generous in sharing her experiences in life. She began as a child star and moved on to her early marriage with rocker Eddie Van Halen.

The young couple had a son, who is now 23.

Valerie Bertinelli also spoke on her weight gain and dramatic weight loss, as well as finding new love and a new life with husband Tom Vitale.

Even plastic surgery wasn’t off the table. When one audience member asked if she had ever had any work done, Valerie Bertinelli left the stage, walked up to her questioner and lifted her hair from around her face so that the woman could inspect it for scars.

Upon finding none, the woman gave up.

“No,” Bertinelli, who is now 54 stated. “Needles in the face and cutting is scary. Never say never, but not yet.”

She summed her message up like this,

“Altogether it’s about having the guts to say to yourself I can do better and I’m going to figure out the ways to do it,” Bertinelli said.

She continued, “Life is all about change. The trick is to change for the better in ways that make us feel better about yourselves and our lives.”

  • Valerie Bertinelli Discovers Her Great-Grandmother’s Fornication

Actress Valerie Bertinelli got a bit of a surprise this week when it was revealed that her grandmother was born out of wedlock.

The secret was revealed when Bertinelli appeared on Who Do You Think You Are?, a series in its fifth season on cable channel TLC. Who Do You Think You Are? is an American remake of a British series that attempts to make genealogy compelling to a mass audience. The series takes celebrities on a tour of their past, uncovering their ancestors with the help of genealogists. Past celebrities who have appeared on Who Do You Think You Are? include Susan Sarandon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Martin Sheen, Zooey Deschanel, Cindy Crawford, and Steve Buscemi.

During Bertinelli’s episode the actress traveled from Scranton, Pennsylvania to Torino, Italy to London in search of her roots. The biggest surprise she uncovered may seem like a humorous detail in a modern context, but is something that may have been scandalous nearly a century ago.

What she discovered was undeniable proof that her great-grandmother was guilty of fornication. Documents uncovered on the show indicate that her grandmother was born in April of 1908. That is two years before her great-grandmother was married in 1910. It was revealed that Bertinelli’s great-grandmother and great-grandfather claimed Bertinelli’s grandmother as their legitimate daughter when they wed.

The Long Island University history professor that helped Bertinelli uncover the scandal explained that money may have been a factor, stating that a proper church wedding would have been expensive during the early 20th century and that a dowry payment may also have been a hindrance to marriage.

Bertinelli is best known for her role as Barbara Cooper in the long-running sitcom One Day at a Time. She is currently starring in the TV Land series Hot in Cleveland.

Other celebrities already featured in this year’s season of Who Do You Think You Are? include actress Rachel McAdams and Cynthia Nixon of Sex and the City fame. Kelsey Grammer and Lauren Graham will appear in this season’s final two episodes later this month.

  • Lisa Kudrow Previews New Season of ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’

Lisa Kudrow recently previewed the new season of TLC’s celebrity genealogy documentary series Who Do You Think You Are? for TV Guide.

The season, which kicked off on Wednesday with an episode about former Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixson’s great-great-great grandmother, will feature Valerie Bertinelli, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Lauren Graham, Kelsey Grammer, and Rachel McAdams.

Who Do You Think You Are? is an adaptation of the British series of the same name that has aired on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) for 11 seasons.

The US version of the series premiered on NBC in 2010 and ran three seasons before being canceled by the network in 2012.

The series was subsequently picked up for a fourth season by TLC and in June the network renewed the series for a six-episode fifth season.

Season four set a strong precedent with celebrities such as Christina Applegate, Kelly Clarkson, Cindy Crawford, Zooey Deschanel, Chelsea Handler, Chris O’Donnell, and Trisha Yearwood.

In the first episode of season five, Cynthia Nixson discovers that her great-great-great grandmother was a victim of domestic violence and, in an act of self-defense, killed her husband with an ax.

“Real life is much more riveting and powerful. We were bug-eyed by that story!” Kudrow said.

She went on to reveal that three more season five celebrity guests – Bertinelli, Ferguson, and McAdams – had a murderer in the family.

Kudrow said it’s not unheard of for a celebrity to back out due to the personal nature of the information uncovered by the show:

“…and we respect that. Sometimes they’ll talk to their family and the family says, ‘Nope. Not for us.’”

Kudrow serves as executive producer of the series along with former Scandal star Dan Bucatinsky. Along with Don Roos (Boys on the Side, Marley & Me, Single White Female) Kudrow and Bucatinsky comprise the production company Is or Isn’t Entertainment.

The company’s first television series, The Comeback, aired for one season on HBO and starred Kudrow and Malin Akerman (Couples Retreat, The Proposal, 27 Dresses.) The series received three Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Kudrow.

“If they had left it on, it would have been fine. Because I think in a couple of years, TV caught up to it,” Kudrow said of the series.

Those words proved true earlier this year when HBO revealed it would bring the show back almost ten years later for a six-episode second season.

In 2008 Is or Isn’t launched the web series Web Therapy with Kudrow and Bucatinsky starring as an Internet therapist and her assistant.

In the summer of 2011 the series transitioned from the Internet to television in the form of a half-hour Showtime series.

“I feel like we snuck in through the back door, almost [like] being a recurring character that finally becomes a regular. So that was easy. Painless, sort of,” Kudrow has said of the transition process.

In January the network announced it would renew the series for a fourth season, set to premiere in October.

  • ‘Inside Amy Schumer’ Renewed by Comedy Central

Amy Schumer’s sketch comedy show Inside Amy Schumer has been picked up for a third season by Comedy Central.

It’s a move some see as part of the network’s attempt to add more comedies created by women to its programming lineup.

Inside Amy Schumer has been lauded as “the most consistently feminist show on television.”

Indeed much of the show’s content, which consists of sketches, standup, and interviews deals in some capacity with gender politics.

Schumer’s creation has been called “always just a little dangerous – but with enough big laughs to justify any possible offense.”

That’s meant a ratings surge for the network, which until now has been predominately male-driven.

Comedy Central has obviously decided to keep a good thing going. They’ve added two more women-created comedies for 2015.

Another Period is written by and will star Natasha Leggero (He’s Just Not That Into You and Neighbors) and Riki Lindhome. Jeremy Konner (Drunk History) and Ben Stiller will executive produce.

Idiotsitter is written by Jillian Bell (Bridesmaids and 22 Jump Street) and Charlotte Newhouse (Puss in Boots: The Three Diablos.) Newhouse stars as a buttoned-down woman hired to babysit spoiled “womanchild” Bell who is serving out house arrest in her father’s mansion.

Earlier this year Comedy Central renewed Broad City for a second season. Created by and co-starring Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, the series has been hailed as “the weirdest, freshest, funkiest new comedy of the season.”

Schumer, who has said she was stunned by the initial success of her show, is in the running for a 2014 Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category.

She’ll be up against comedic heavyweights such as Kristen Bell (House of Lies,) Valerie Bertinelli (Hot in Cleveland,) and Alyson Hannigan (How I Met Your Mother.)

  • Valerie Bertinelli Dishes On Weight Gain

Valerie Bertinelli admits she has gained back a lot of the 40 pounds she lost while serving as Jenny Craig spokesperson back in 2012. She also says she shouldn’t feel public shame over the gain. The Hot in Cleveland star appeared as a guest of The View on Wednesday, and explained the recent unpleasant ordeal.

“Because I broke my foot three months ago and I’ve not been able to work out, the weight starts to creep up,” she told The View co-hosts. “Then, I started thinking, ‘Why do I feel so much shame?’ Because the cameras are on me? Because the paparazzi can’t wait to get a picture of me looking like I’ve gained a few pounds. It’s like, we have to take the shame out of it.”

The former One Day at A Time star says as she felt the weight slowly creep back on she started to panic.

“It started to panic me and panic me. And then I thought, ‘Well, wait a minute. This is my body. I’m almost 54. I broke my foot, I haven’t been able to move.’”

Bertinelli shared the following with her Twitter followers.

Valerie only recently went back to the gym since being warned following her injury about doing anything to potentially raise her heart rate.

“I’m back in the gym and ready to go,” she said.

Valerie Bertinelli has no intention whatsoever of starving herself either. She will lose the weight slowly, the way it should come off.

She shared the following tweets with regard to her recent weight gain.

“I still like to eat, and I’m going to eat,” she said.

She also added, “We all need to give each other a break, especially women. Let’s leave each other alone.”

Oh, definitely. Valerie Bertinelli makes an excellent point here. And it’s not only women either. Even men can fall into feelings of fear and helplessness when carrying a few too many pounds.

Kudos to the Hot in Cleveland star for speaking her mind and sticking to her guns.

  • Valerie Bertinelli Talks Weight Gain

    Valerie Bertinelli Talks Weight Gain

Actress Valerie Bertinelli spoke openly about her recent weight gain on Wednesday’s episode of The Talk.

It’s not the first time Bertinelli has been in the spotlight for her weight. A few years ago, her 40-pound weight loss was widely publicized when she signed on as a spokesperson for weight loss big name Jenny Craig. In 2009 she posed for the cover of People wearing a tiny green bikini just before her 49th birthday.

When Bertinelli sat down with The Talk hosts Julie Chen, Sharon Osbourne, Aisha Tyler, Sheryl Underwood, and Carnie Wilson on Wednesday, she talked about recent photos from the set of her TV Land sitcom Hot in Cleveland.

Bertinelli admitted she’s gained weight in recent months. She broke her foot in December and had to forgo the gym on doctor’s orders.

She said that at one point she started to feel panicked about the weight gain:

“Why do I feel so much shame? Because the cameras are on me, because the paparazzi can’t wait to get a few pictures of me looking like I’ve gained a few pounds.”

Bertinelli said she finally has her doctor’s permission to return to the gym and she’s “ready to go.”

But she’s speaking out against what she sees as a cultural tendency to focus unnecessary attention on a woman’s weight.

“We have to take the shame out of it,” Bertinelli told The Talk hosts. “We all need to give each other a break. Especially women. Let’s leave each other alone.”

Bertinelli became a household name when she starred as Barbara Cooper on One Day at a Time from 1975 to 1984.

In 1981, she married rocker Eddie Van Halen. The couple divorced in 2007. They are the parents of 23-year-old Wolfgang Van Halen. Bertinelli married Tom Vitale in 2011.

Hot in Cleveland in which Bertinelli stars alongside Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick, and Betty White, premiered on TV Land in 2010. In March 2013 it was renewed for a 24-episode fifth season, which premiered on March 26.

  • Eddie Van Halen Attends 2014 NAMM

Eddie Van Halen Attends 2014 NAMM

Eddie Van Halen was an unexpected attendee at the 2014 NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) Convention in California on Wednesday. Held at the Anaheim Convention Center, photos of the Van Halen rocker have shown up around the internet throughout the week. Some attendees have posted on their Twitter pages about seeing the musician as well.

Once married to One Day At A Time star Valerie Bertinelli, the two share a son, Wolfgang. “Wolfie,” as he is called by his mom and dad, has accompanied Eddie Van Halen on tour.

Canadian TV personality Kevin O’Leary tweeted a picture of himself with Eddie Van Halen, as well as with Fender CEO Larry Thomas at the Fender Strat party.

A NAMM guest named Jay Hale shared a photo someone was kind enough to shoot of him with Eddie Van Halen with his Twitter followers, too.

Eddie Van Halen toured and recorded music for several years with David Lee Roth but the two had many serious conflicts throughout the years. Sammy Hagar joined the band in 1985. For years Van Halen built his own rendition of electric guitars. The Wolfgang is named after his and Valerie Bertinelli’s son. He endured and lost a significant portion of his tongue to cancer in 2000 and a few years later spent time in rehab for alcoholism.

Van Halen toured Japan in 2012, and in the summer of 2013 he played at the Paso Robles, California State Fair–as seen in the video clip above.. He appeared on two tracks of LL Cool J’s album Authentic in 2013, however--Not Leaving You Tonight and We’re the Greatest. Definitely a legend in the music world, it must have been very exciting for unsuspecting fans to see him during his appearance at NAMM this past week.
