  • Jennifer Aniston Vacations in Cabo with Celeb Friends

Jennifer Aniston’s seemed to escape the cold December chils for a much warmer Mexican climate. The 44-year-old star and her fiancé Justin Theroux soaked up the sun (and eachother) on their recent tropical vacation.

The happy couple took a private jet to Cabo San Lucas where they checked into a private beachfront home. The lovenest cost $9,500 a night including a private chef, butler and a personal masseuse. When they’re not being pampered by the staff, the two can workout in their very own private gym.

The cute couple isn’t alone on this vacation, hanging with famous pals Courteney Cox, Howard Stern and his wife Beth Ostrosky, and newlyweds Jimmy Kimmel and Molly McNearny.

Didn’t know Kimmel and Aniston were friends? Check out her appearance on his talk show.

Accoring to an E! eyewittness “Jen has also spent a lot of time with Courteney, working out with her, and swimming in the pool. They seem to be the best friends they have been for years, always chatting and laughing together.”

  • Shark Photobombs Two Boys at Manhattan Beach

The photobomb trend is nothing new–everyone from friends, strangers and even celebrities have been known to get in a picture right before it was taken, effectively ruining it. While photobombs can be annoying (and sometimes funny), at least they don’t usually send cold chills up your spine right? A woman from Manhattan Beach, California got quite the surprise when she discovered that a shark photobombed a snapshot of her boys playing in the ocean.

June Emerson took her twin 12-year-old boys to Manhattan Beach on Friday. After looking through her pictures, she noticed something lurking near the boys. “I’m not sure what it was, but it definitely scared me when I thought it might be a shark,” Emerson said. “Many local surfers and lifeguards have seen this and believe it to be a shark.”

Rather than tell her boys that a shark was so close to them while they were in the water, Emerson decided to tell them that the creature in the photo was a dolphin. “Of course, I told my kids it was dolphin, as we live at the beach and are in the waters here almost daily.” Now that the shark photobomb story has gone viral, it’s not likely that Emerson will be able to keep that story afloat for long.

Check out the shark photobomb picture below.

Some people believe the shark in the photo was a Great White (cue the Jaws music). Great White sharks have been spotted close to the Manhattan Beach shore before, but it hasn’t been confirmed that the shark in the photo was of the Jaws variety.

While the photo might scare some people out of getting in the ocean for a while, most sharks don’t attack humans. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), “sharks rarely ever attack humans and would much rather feed on fish and marine mammals.” The NOAA also notes that most shark attacks occur when the shark is “confused or curious.”

  • Travel Deals: A Cure For the Common Christmas

“Next year we’re not doing a Christmas tree or gifts at all! We’re all just going to go to Hawaii!”

Each year since my youth my mom has hollered this through a straitjacket of stringed lights as if it was a threat. Meanwhile, my siblings and I kept waiting with bated breath for her to make good on delivering this punishment in paradise. After almost three decades, I’m still waiting – but you don’t have to.

You don’t have to wait for another year to go by either.

In fact, if that holiday malaise is setting in as you sip your Starbucks and stroke the screen of your smartphone, keep in mind that holiday travel deals are still in progress – and just a tap away thanks to innovations introduced by online travel businesses. A few CEOs of the top OTAs (online travel agencies) sat down with USA recently and explained how staying ahead of their competition means simultaneously simplifying your booking process and saving you money:

CEO of Priceline.com North America, Christopher Soder said, “Mobile has grown very fast. One example for using your phone will allow you to search for hotels near you. A lot of our mobile bookers book for check-in that night within a mile of their location. On our iPad app you can define the neighborhood by just drawing on the map and saying, ‘Show me hotels in this area.’”

Dara Khosrowshahi (CEO of Expedia) also spoke about applications, “An interesting new feature on the Expedia app is itinerary sharing. If I share my itinerary with you, it will show up on your Expedia app, and you will get updates on gate changes, arrival time, etc. It is updated live.”

Regarding travel deals, he added, “We negotiate with hoteliers for same-day and last-minute bookings on the mobile app. They’re sometimes 50% off.”

Barney Hartford (CEO of Orbitz Worldwide) agreed, “The use of mobile for same-day bookings is huge,” adding, “Orbitz Inside Deals has killer deals on properties that are only available for 72 hours, and we will send some of our members a heads-up about them before they go on the website. We also have destinations where we offer a promo code that is good just for 24 or 48 hours.”

Between ease of access and discounts, travel agencies are making a getaway sound awfully alluring. So, if a holiday at home is falling short of earth shattering this year – why not salvage what’s left of your leave, hop on a plane (or cruise ship), and go Instagram some island memories?

After all, nobody’s dreaming of a trite Christmas.

  • Cruise Deals: Find a Cheap Cruise for the Holidays

If you’re looking for a cruise deal, you should have no problem finding a cheap cruise for the holidays. Whether you want to give the gift of a cruise to a loved one or purchase it as a gift for yourself, there is no shortage of cheap cruise offerings right now. Considering that you get a room, great food and entertainment all in one low price, cruises can make a great gift.

    Carnival

Carnival is one of the most popular cheaper cruise lines out there and they certainly live up to their reputation this holiday season. If you want to get away at Christmas, they have a 4-night Western Caribbean cruise that starts at $389 per person.

If you prefer to save traveling until after the holidays are over, you can book a 3-night Bahamas cruise that leaves out of Port Canaveral starting at $159 per person. If you aren’t into the shorter cruises and want something that will get you away for almost a week, there is a 6-night Western Caribbean cruise that starts at $309 per person. This cruise departs in the second half of January.

    Norwegian

Carnival isn’t the only cruise line with good cruise deals–Norwegian Cruise Lines offers some pretty good deals themselves. If you want to give the gift of a cruise, but don’t want to break the bank, you can purchase a 3-night Bahamas cruise from Norwegian starting at $129 per person. For those who don’t mind spending a little more money, a 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise can be purchased starting at $399 per person. An added bonus, this cruise can be taken right after the New Year’s festivities are over.

    Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean has the second best cruise deal on our list with a 3-night Bahamas cruise starting at $130. This is a nice extended weekend cruise that won’t cost you much vacation time before the year gets started. Royal Caribbean offers a 5-night Western Caribbean cruise starting at $376. This is a little bit more than a similar cruise offered by Norwegian, but less than a similar one offered by Carnival, so this comes down to cruise line preference.

    Extra Costs

If you or the person you’re gifting a cruise to are first-time cruisers, there are a few costs you should be aware of. You are expected to provide a tip for the dining staff, housekeepers, etc. This might be a no-brainer, but Carnival adds a daily tip to your final bill, which has taken some first-time cruisers by surprise. While cruise lines include food and some non-alcoholic drinks around the clock as part of your fare, alcohol isn’t included in this unless you specifically add on the option.

Even though there is no shortage of activities to do on the cruise ship, if you want to participate in excursions, this will come at a cost. Since the cruise line’s excursion costs can be a little inflated, it’s always a good idea to do your research in advance and see if you can score a better deal by booking directly through the excursion site.

  • Kailua, Hawaii: Tourists, Please Stop Coming Here

The AP reports that the Hawaiian town of Kailua has endured a lot of popular tourism lately. With even President Barack Obama and his family spending Christmas in Kailua, some of the town’s residents have decided to take a stand against tourism.

Well, Kailua has had enough of the haoles. A neighborhood board has asked the state tourism agency not to encourage visitors to come and stay overnight in Kailua anymore. They voted 12-2 in September to “stop promoting Kailua as a tourist destination and alternative to Waikiki.”

The AP is reporting the board’s actions as a “salvo in a long-running battle” regarding how much tourism Kailua’s residents are willing to tolerate. Tourists became a problem when they arrived seeking the “local island life” experience rather than simply visiting as a tourist.

One of the board’s big issues is the bed-and-breakfast vacation rental industry. Their argument is that such businesses are inflating the costs of real estate and making homes unaffordable to locals.

Lisa Marten, one of the board members, said “It doesn’t feel like a neighborhood when you don’t know the people there… If there’s any sort of safety issue, there’s no one to ask for help because you don’t know them.” Two of three nearby houses are vacation rental homes.

Hawaii maintains between 7000 and 10,000 county-regulated vacation rental homes. The AP estimates, based on the Hawaii Tourism Authority, that between 280 and 500 vacation rentals are in Kailua, but only a few dozen are actually licensed; the rest are considered illegal, according to Board Chairman Chuck Prentiss.

Oahu hasn’t issued new vacation rental permits since 1990, and Marten believes there’s a certain hypocrisy in the Hawaiian Tourism Authority promoting vacation rentals in Kailua while the city of Kailua struggles to shut down illegal vacation rentals.

However, Marten’s neighborhood board hardly represents the entire town. Kailua’s Honolulu City Council representative, Ikaika Anderson, called the resolution “an embarrassment,” adding that it “[sends] a signal to those folks who do not live in Kailua that Kailua residents do not welcome them.”

Apologists of the vacation homes said their activities support the local economy, and that those owners who rent out their homes to tourists do so for the extra income needed to afford Kailua’s expensive mortgages.

  • Twitter Buzzes with Labor Day Travel Ideas

Twitter Buzzes with Labor Day Travel Ideas

The long weekend beckons and most people are off work, so if you can swing it, do it! It’s time to savor the last sweet taste of Summer. It’s like scooping the sugar out of the bottom of a really good glass of iced tea with your finger…
If you’re from the south, you know what I’m talking about.

  • Another Summer, Another Rise In Gas Prices

Another Summer, Another Rise In Gas Prices

As the title indicates, while the Memorial Day weekend may mean the beginning of summer fun, it also means that gas prices have, once again, gone up. This, naturally, means, those road trips families have been planning are going to cost more than they did a mere two weeks ago. As the chart clearly reveals, at the start of may, national gas prices were hovering around the $3.51 mark, and now, they are over $3.60.

    (image)

While that 9 to 10 cent increase per gallon may not seem much, a dollar-per-ten-gallons increase can take its toll, especially on those who dream of taking long, National Lampoon’s Vacation-like trips to amusement parks on the other side of the country.

Over at HowStuffWorks, there is a comprehensive explanation for these yearly gas increases, but it can be boiled down to this basic concept: the increase in road travelers means a higher demand for that precious oil means, like in all things related to supply and demand, increased prices. Basic fundamentals of economics aside, that doesn’t make the news about increased gas prices any easier to stomach. That being said, the principle behind the increase also provides a clue for how to reverse the process: decrease the demand. Take shorter, less gas-demanding trips, or do something that doesn’t even require a combustion engine.

Of course, this means forfeiting long trips to Wally World, but then again, the disaster that was the Griswold trip should be all the salve you’ll need for whatever disappointment the gas price travel blues bring. At least you’ll be avoiding those potential crises.

  • Michelle Obama to Vacation in Martha’s Vineyard With Daughters [RUMOR]

It’s been a tough month for the Obama administration. With house Republicans still attempting to turn the Benghazi attacks into a full-fledged scandal, two real scandals have popped up in recent weeks. One involves the IRS targeting new tax-exempt groups aligned politically with the Tea Party movement for extra scrutiny. The other involves the Justice Department seizing months of phone records from Associated Press reporters as part of an investigation into internal leaks. Now, the massive tornado that hit Oklahoma this week has resulted in billions of dollars worth of damage, though the death toll from the storm is not as high as previously feared.

It’s enough to make someone want to get away for a while, and that’s exactly what First Lady Michelle Obama is rumored to be doing.

According to a report in the Boston Globe, the Obamas and their daughters, Sasha and Malia, are looking to vacation this summer in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. Michelle Obama and the girls will reportedly stay on the island for an “extended period” with the President joining them on “occasional weekends” throughout the summer, and two weeks in August.

The Globe report states that, in the past, the first family has vacationed at a farm on the island that has now been bought for almost $22 million. The Obamas are now rumored to be looking at a house in a secluded part of the island called Farm Neck as their summer vacation destination.

  • 50 Shades of Grey: Hotel Package Lets You Create Your Own Fantasies

“50 Shades of Grey” is apparently the book to read if you’re interested in expanding your amorous exploits in the bedroom. It’s the ultimate how-to book for sexual freakiness, wrapped in a narrative that began its life as “Twilight” fan fiction. The popularity of the “mommy porn” novel has exploded as of late, with otherwise unadventurous folks using the novel as guideline for their own naughty experiments. If this is what it takes for people to loosen up about sex, then hey, I’m all for it, regardless of whether or not it’s poorly written.

Those who are looking for the ultimate “50 Shades of Grey” experience should take note of the packages currently being offered up by lodgings such as Hotel Max in Seattle, which gives prospective customers the opportunity to live out their wildest Christian Grey-oriented fantasies. Of course, if you make a big mess — tampon flinging included — chances are you’re going to have to pay a clean-up fee, especially since this place looks a little high-class.

According to their website, the hotel currently offers you the chance to “live out your fantasies with a two-night getaway in an Artist King room on the romantic 8th floor. During your stay, enjoy chauffeured town car service, a helicopter tour of the city and a private four-hour skippered sailing excursion on Puget Sound with gourmet picnic and a bottle of Bollinger Grande Année Rosé 1999 Champagne, a favorite of Mr. Grey himself.” Make sure to bring $1600, because that’s how much this particular package is going to set you back. How conveniently opportunistic!

Not to be outdone, the Heathman Hotel in Portland, Oregon has their own “50 Shades of Grey” adventure. “In honor of Mr Grey’s chopper, The Heathman is offering a ‘Charlie Tango No Limits’ add-on package that includes appetizers and white wine at the hotel restaurant for six people, a helicopter tour of Portland, roses for the women, dinner at the hotel and limo transfers,” says the lodging. The price for this excursion: $2,750.

Is this ridiculous? A bit. If you’re really interested in getting the full “50 Shades of Grey” experience, spend all of that money on BDSM products and stay home. I can almost guarantee you’ll have more fun. If you haven’t read the novel, allow Gilbert Gottfried to introduce you to the mysterious Christian Grey. By the way — the clip embedded below is not safe for work.

  • European Court Baffles The World With Vacation Ruling

Next to rain what is the worst thing that could happen to you on vacation? I’m pretty sure that everyone can agree that getting sick is the worst possible thing that can happen to you while on vacation because it is basically time wasted.

Well a Spanish union has just sued and won a decision from the European High Court stating that if someone gets sick while on vacation, they have to have their vacation extended to cover the amount of time they were sick.

“The purpose of entitlement to paid annual leave is to enable the worker to rest and enjoy a period of relaxation and leisure,” the Court of Justice of the European Union, based in Luxembourg, ruled in a case involving department store workers in Spain. “The purpose of entitlement to sick leave is different, since it enables a worker to recover from an illness that has caused him to be unfit for work.”

If you are wondering, this is why the European Union is a breath away from falling apart. They cannot control their debt, they spend more than they have, yet the courts make ruling like this.

The Court of Justice had previously ruled that a person who gets sick before going on vacation is entitled to reschedule the vacation, and on Thursday it said that right extended into the vacation itself. “The point at which the temporary incapacity arose is irrelevant,” the court found. And since Europeans are guaranteed 4-6 weeks of paid leave a year, it extends to through the entire time they are on vacation.

When stuff like this happens, it is no wonder that the European Union is going south in a hurry.

  • Fergie Vacation Photo Causes a Stir on Twitter

Fergie vacation photos are apparently not to be missed. While bath salt-addled individuals unceremoniously chew the faces off complete strangers here in the States, Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie — also known to some of us as one of the “Kids Incorporated” cast members — has been enjoying a sunny vacation in Mexico with her actor husband Josh Duhamel (“Transformers”, “Life as We Know It”). To show you just how much fun she’s having while enjoying some time out of the spotlight, Fergie posted a revealing picture to her Twitter account, displaying — what else? — her amazingly toned bikini body. The picture has been embedded below, so be sure to have your drool cup handy.

What do those who wile away the hours on Twitter have to say about the singer’s barely-there attire? You’re about to find out in just second. All you have to do is scroll past the image you see below, which, for some, might be a little hard to do. After all, Fergie is pretty much letting it all hang out. If you’re a fan of impossible cleavage and extraordinarily flat stomaches, your eyes may linger on the image longer than most. Just know that, when you’re done ogling, Twitter reactions to Fergie’s bikini await your undivided attention.

  • Yahoo TimeTraveler App Now In The App Store

Yahoo TimeTraveler App Now In The App Store

We’ve all been there: on vacation in a new and exciting city, only there’s much more to do in the city than you’ve got time for. Whether it’s Rome, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago, most of the best cities to visit have fare more than you can do in a single day – or a single weekend. On trips like that, you have to make sure to manage your time well. Take too long at the Statue of Liberty and you’ll lose your chance to go up into the Empire State Building. Spend too long trying to find the Trevi Fountain and you’ll never make it to the Colosseum before it closes at dark.

A smartphone can help take some of the stress out of visiting such cities. After all, you’re carrying a map of pretty much every place in the world in your pocket, and there are dozens upon dozens of apps designed to help tourists find what they’re looking for. What most of these apps don’t help you with, though, is time management. They may tell you how long it will take you to get from Chicago’s Sears Willis Tower to the Adler Planetarium, but they don’t tell you much about how long it will take you at the Planetarium.

That’s where the new TimeTraveler app from Yahoo! comes in. Unfortunately, TimeTraveler doesn’t quite do what the name implies: if you were expecting an app that turned your phone into the TARDIS, I’m afraid you’ll have to keep looking. No, what TimeTraveler does is help you plan your trek through a city by showing all the points of interest on a map, then telling you how long it will take you at each place.

When you open up the app you’re presented with a selection of 29 of the most famous cities in the world. We’ll use Boston as an example, since that’s one of my favorite cities to visit:

    Yahoo! Time Traveler

Once you’ve picked your city, you set a start point, an end point, and the amount of time you have. Let’s say you’ve just finished lunch at Cheers (which is right across the street from Boston Common), and you want to make it to Fenway Park for an evening baseball game. You want to be there in plenty of time to get your beer and your hot dog and get to your seat by the time the game starts, so you give yourself 5 hours:

    Yahoo! Time Traveler

Once you put in all the details, TimeTraveler plots your route and picks attractions along the way that you can do in the amount of time you’ve allotted. Once it’s done, it shows them to you in a handy list:

    Yahoo! Time Traveler

If you tap the round icon at the bottom, you’re can check out a map that shows your start point, end point, and the attractions TimeTraveler has picked for you. You can also identify other points of interest along the way, including restaurants and hotels. You can also see pictures that others have taken of attractions in your area.

    Yahoo! Time Traveler

From the list view, tapping on any of the attractions on your route brings up a card that shows some basic details of the attraction. Details include business hours, location, and some information about why the place you’re going is famous. Of course, business hours are subject to change, and the owners are under no obligation to inform Yahoo! when that happens, so you should always double-check the hours of any place you plan to visit.

    Yahoo! Time Traveler

Though I have not, like Johnny Cash, been everywhere, man, I’ve done a fair bit of travelling in my time. I’ve often found myself in a new city feeling overwhelmed with the amount of stuff there is to do in the little bit of time I have. As such, I’ve used a lot of different apps for tourists. While they all have their pros and cons, there’s an awful lot of overlap in the kinds of things they do. Truth to tell, most of them don’t do a lot more for me than I can get just by using my iPhone’s built-in Maps app.

TimeTraveler, however, stands out from the crowd in a big way. Though it may not put a flux capacitor in my phone, it comes as close as it possibly can to the next best thing. It’s available today as a free download from the iOS App Store, where it’s currently at the top of the list of featured new apps. For more information, you can check out Yahoo’s TimeTraveler page.

  • TripAdvisor and Facebook Team Up to Help You Plan the Trip of Your Dreams

TripAdvisor and Facebook Team Up to Help You Plan the Trip of Your Dreams

TripAdvisor has been teaming up with Facebook to help millions of travelers plan the best trip of their life by featuring recommendations from their FB friends.

The decision was based off of a Nielsen research study,”U.S. Advertising Spend and Effectiveness,” which found that recommendations from “personal acquaintances was cited as the most trusted form of advertisement by U.S. Internet consumers (76%). Forty-nine percent said they trusted consumer opinions posted online.” This makes a lot of sense. If you know that you like a lot of the same things as your bingo buddy Sally, then you are more likely to purchase the same Sandals resort package in Jamaica that she did versus what some stranger suggests.

TripAdvisor launched its Trip Friends product in June 2010. The places that a user’s friends and associates have been is highlighted on the Cities I’ve Visited Facebook app. They can also see this information on the FB Timeline. People can also view hotels that their FB friends have rated on TripAdvisor and they are listed first in the company’s hotel rankings section. This was made possible through the travel site’s continued integration with Facebook.

Adam Medros, vice president of global product for TripAdvisor stated in a recent press release that “we are excited that 100 million travelers have had a personalized experienced on TripAdvisor, making TripAdvisor the world’s best site to plan a trip using the wisdom of your friends.” He went on to explain that “providing travelers with a social trip planning experience will continue to be a strategic focus at TripAdvisor, and we look forward to having even more travelers see their friends’ travel recommendations on TripAdvisor.”

“So we’re asking for their help in finding a name that will work better. Come up with a better name and win a trip of a lifetime."

  • Create Systems in Your Business So You Can Go On Vacation

This week, I was speaking with a client who wanted to be able to go on vacation with the knowledge that his business was still moving in the right direction. He wanted to be able to go away and be away without checking in (and stressing out) throughout the day. That conversation inspired this post.

As a small business owner or self-employed professional, you place a high value on your time. It’s easy to get caught up in reinventing the wheel over and over again. As you grow and bring on help (a virtual assistant, customer service, etc.) it can be hard to let go and feel confident that your business is moving in the right direction without you being in the office and following up on every detail yourself.

In order to work less, get more done and make sure your staff is doing things they way you want them to be done, you need to create systems.

Business systems are really powerful. They can help you:

              Manage growth

              Delegate

              Bring on assistance

Focus on the big picture while still knowing the day-to-day tasks are being handled in the manner in which you WANT them to be handled

              Standardize your processes

Be assured your clients will have a solid and consistent experience with your company

              Provide for top-notch client service

              Stop reinventing the wheel

I always recommend my clients create an Operations Manual. In it you will list all the tasks that must be done in your business with step-by-step directions for each task. It should be regularly updated.

The goal of your Operations Manual is to allow anyone to walk into your business and quickly get up to speed. It allows you, the business owner, to know your business is moving forward in the direction YOU want, even when you are not there. Plus, it gives you direction for processes you do over and over but which aren’t part of your daily routine.

Your Operations Manual should be easy to read, use simple language and have practical information. It’s a good idea to have an easy-to-use table of contents.

There are many software options for your operations manual. You can use something as simple as Microsoft Word, although there are many “fancier” options out there. Another route to take would be to use a web-based collaborative tool such as Google Docs or SharePoint so everyone on your team/staff can update the document.

Since your Operations Manual is a living, breathing document, it’s important that you put a quarterly review of it on your calendar.
