Uncle Ben’s Rice- Why Was It Recalled?

Several flavors of Uncle Ben’s Flavor Infused Rice have been recalled after students at a school in Texas became ill after eating it. According to reports, the students began to experience allergic reaction-like symptoms after eating the Mexican flavored rice product. Some of the symptoms the students experienced include rashes, welts, and flushed faces.

Although these symptoms were only caused by one flavor of the rice, Uncle Ben’s decided to do a voluntary recall on all of their infused rice products. The products that have been recalled are:

    – Uncle Ben’s Infused Rice Roasted Chicken Flavor (5- and 25-pound bags)

    – Uncle Ben’s Infused Rice Garlic and Butter Flavor (5-pound bags)

    – Uncle Ben’s Infused Rice Mexican Flavor (5- and 25-pound bags)

    – Uncle Ben’s Infused Rice Pilaf (5-pound bags)

    – Uncle Ben’s Infused Rice Saffron Flavor (5-pound bags)

    – Uncle Ben’s Infused Rice Cheese Flavor (5-pound bags)

    – Uncle Ben’s Infused Rice Spanish Flavor (25-pound bags)

The company has warned anyone who currently has these products not to cook or eat them. The products can be returned to the store where they were purchased and exchanged for a different product. Some stores may also provide refunds for the rice.

The company said that they had removed all of these products from their supply chain in hopes of preventing more people from experiencing the same symptoms as the students at the Texas school. The company released a statement saying,

“Our network of distributors, brokers, and sales associates immediately started notifying their customers and collecting the product. Therefore, we initiated the voluntary recall to ensure that anyone in possession of the product is aware that it should not be served or eaten, but returned to where it was purchased.”

  • Rice Recall: Uncle Ben’s Rice Is Making Children Sick

Some products created under the “Uncle Ben’s” logo have been recalled due to unhealthy reactions in school children and teachers. The rice being recalled includes 5 lb and 25 lb bags of infused rice, which is not generally sold in grocery stores or supermarkets.

Mars Foodservices is the company that produces the affected products, which are usually sold through wholesale distributors for use by restaurants, schools, hospitals and other commercial establishments.

The company stated that the Uncle Ben’s products it is recalling consist of flavored rice, and this happened after people developed flushing and rashes after eating one of the rice varieties. The company said it found out last week that children at three Houston schools had “experienced allergic-like symptoms of mild flushing and rash” after eating Uncle Ben’s Mexican Flavor Infused Rice.

More accurately, 34 students and four teachers at three public schools in Katy, Texas reported burning, itching rashes, headaches and nausea for 30 to 90 minutes on Friday before the symptoms went away, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said. The students had all eaten Uncle Ben’s Infused Rice, Mexican Flavor.

In early December, Illinois reported similar reactions among 25 students who had eaten Uncle Ben’s Infused Rice Product, and North Dakota authorities reported another similar incident when four people had reactions after eating the product.

When the company learned of the illnesses, they began recalling all of their infused rice products from suppliers.

“Our network of distributors, brokers, and sales associates immediately started notifying their customers and collecting the product,” Mars Foodservices said.

However, the company discovered during their blanket recall, that “a limited amount” of the rice is on sale through websites and at some wholesale stores.

“Therefore, we initiated the voluntary recall to ensure that anyone in possession of the product is aware that it should not be served or eaten, but returned to where it was purchased,” Mars Foodservices said.

The company said it is “continuing to work closely” with the FDA to investigate the matter.

Besides the Mexican flavor which was the cause of most of the illnesses, Uncle Ben’s infused rice comes in other flavors such as roasted chicken, pilaf, saffron, cheese, Spanish and garlic and butter varieties.

  • Uncle Ben’s Infused Rice Recalled Over Food Poisoning Concerns

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Mars Foodservices today issued a recall of all Uncle Ben’s Infused Rice. The recall pertains to both five- and 25-pound bags of such rice. Other types of Uncle Ben rice, including Ready to Heat, boxed, or cup rice are not part of the recall.

The recall was issued following illnesses reported in Katy, Texas public schools. According to the FDA, children and teachers who had consumed Uncle Ben’s Infused Rice Mexican Flavor experienced burning, itchy rashes, headaches, and nausea for up to an hour-and-a-half. The FDA and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are currently investigating the illness and its cause.

This latest incident follows a December 2013 case in which 25 children at an Illinois school experienced similar symptoms after consuming Uncle Ben’s Infused Rice. Another case in October involving several children at a North Dakota daycare facility was also reported to the FDA.

Uncle Ben’s Infused Rice is most commonly distributed to schools, restaurants, and hospitals through food service companies. All flavors of the product are subject to the recall, including roasted chicken, garlic & butter, mexican, pilaf, saffron, cheese, and spanish.

The FDA is recommending that the recalled rice be returned to distributors or, in the case of individual consumers, to the place where it was purchased. Consumers may also simply dispose of the rice themselves.
