  • Miss UMES Resigns Amid Scandal Following Arrest

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is short a campus queen this week. Porsha Simone Harvey, a native of Newark, Del., is no longer Miss University of Maryland Eastern Shore. She was dethroned due to questionable and inappropriate behaviors that were said to be unbecoming of her position.

Harvey’s troubles began back in mid-February when was charged by a member of campus police with engaging in “disruptive behavior”. The confrontation is said to have occurred when UMES police officer J. Barnes instructed Harvey to exit a crowded hallway.

Harvey reportedly struck the officer and yelled for him to “let go of her”. This alleged outburst resulted in Harvey being arrested for disorderly conduct and and failure to obey a reasonable and lawful order of a law enforcement officer.

Days later she was cited for possession of marijuana in court.

Harvey’s attorney, William Hall of Salisbury, Md. would not comment about the charges the young woman is facing. He said that Harvey herself would not be discussing the charges with members of the media.

These events seemed to reflect poorly on Harvey to such a degree that she was ordered to return her crown, sashes, and office keys and suspend any and all activities related to her UMES title.

The order for Harvey to end her reign immediately came in the form of sternly written letter to the 21-year-old student by the UMES Office of Campus Life.

The letter, obtained and published by the Daily Times, was written on Monday. The organization referred to Harvey’s recent behavior as “inconsistent with a UMES student and someone of [her] position.”

Prior to the recent scandal, Harvey had been a contestant in the Miss Delaware USA pageant. She was a member of the Cathedral Choir of Delaware and had even performed for former President George W. Bush with her choir.
