  • David Schwimmer on ‘Friends’ Reunion: “I Have No Idea What’s Expected of Us’

The upcoming Friends reunion that’s had the internet in a tizzy over the past week is looking like it’s going to disappoint a lot of people.

The cast of the show, minus Matthew Perry, are set to “reunite” at an upcoming NBC event honoring famed TV director Jim Burrows, who worked on Friends.

And according to Perry, who will miss the event due to other obligations (a London play), the reunion isn’t going to be as satisfying as many would hope.

“It’s not the reunion everyone is hoping for. They are celebrating Jim Burrows, who was a director of Friends,” Perry recently explained. “The other five are going to be on this special and I am going to introduce them from London. I’m doing the play here so I can’t be there.”

Now, David Schwimmer is throwing more cold water on the reports.

Speaking at a press event for the upcoming The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, Ross had this to say:

“You know, I have no idea what’s expected of us. I’m flying in that day so I’m just showing up … From what I’ve been told by Sean Hayes, he said we’re all going to come up on stage and talk about Jim and give him a hug. I just want to be in the room when he’s honored because this man has contributed so, so greatly to this country’s enjoyment of television in the last 40 to 50 years. So it’s lovely there’s an event that honors him and so many people that love him and so many people whose careers were helped [and] defined by him.”

Rumors of an actual Friends reunion have been popping up every so often for years – and none of them have ever materialized. Maybe having Ross, Rachel, Monica, Joey, and Phoebe on a stage (and Chandler via telecast) for a few minutes is as close as we’re ever going to get.

  • “Supergirl” TV Series To Introduce New Characters

Supergirl, the TV series, is set to resume on January 4th and it seems fans of the show have a lot to look forward to.

Executive producer and series writer Andrew Kreisberg recently revealed on Kevin Smith’s “Fatman on Batman” podcast that the Supergirl TV series will be introducing a couple of new villains before the season is up.

Henry Czerny will be playing the role of Winslow Schott, Sr., also known as Toyman, on the Supergirl TV series.

Toyman traditionally makes toys into powerful weapons and likes to cause mass destruction with them.

Also coming to the Supergirl TV series is a sort of evil counterpart for Supergirl.

Known as a Bazarro character, the newcomer will likely be Bizarro-girl and will have all of the opposite powers that Supergirl has.

During the podcast, Kreisberg casually dropped it, saying, “We’ve got the Toyman coming up, we got Bizarro.”

What do you think about Bizarro (-Girl?) and Toyman coming up on the Supergirl TV series? Are you excited?

  • Grey’s Anatomy: Patrick Dempsey Talks Dr. Shepherd, Shonda Rhimes

Does Patrick Dempsey think Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes killed off his character, Dr. Derek Shepherd, because she didn’t like him?

    If so, he’s not saying.

You might recall that Rhimes was recently asked about this very thing. Appearing on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, Rhimes was asked if she had ever killed off a character because she didn’t like the actor portraying said character.

Her response was ” “Yes. And I’m not naming names.”

So, just who was she talking about? Could it have been Patrick Dempsey?

If Dempsey thinks so, he’s not letting on. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dempsey had nothing but praise for the woman behind Grey’s Anatomy.

Here’s what he had to say when asked about whether or not Rhimes killed McDreamy because of him:

“I think she loves being provocative and that’s fine for who she is. That gets people talking about all the stuff that she’s doing. She’s an amazing woman who is incredibly productive. She’s promoting a book. She’s promoting three shows. And she’s emerging as the star of all of these things. I think she knows how to deal with the media and what she needs to say to get the response that she’s looking for. She’s very savvy.”

Dempsey, who is set to star in the upcoming Bridget Jones’s Baby, also said he expected the strong reaction from the Grey’s Anatomy fanbase when Dr. Shepherd met his end.

“I knew it would be heavy like that. I didn’t realize until we did our interview that it was really over. It started to dawn on me that this is coming to an end, which is why I think I was so moved by it. It was the first time I really stepped back and was starting to witness and to reflect on what had happened. That was the first time I was really saying goodbye to [Derek]. And I wasn’t at all surprised with how people reacted.”

It’s ok. You can always see Dr. Shepherd in old episodes on Netflix.

  • John Krasinski Has a New Animated Comedy Coming to Adult Swim

Fans of John Krasinski and Stephen Merchant, two very funny guys, will be happy to learn that the pair has a new show coming to TV.

Episodes will feature a rotating cast of desperate patients who have their dreams recorded and analyzed by Dream Corp’s absent-minded professor, Dr. Roberts (Jon Gries), and his team of unremarkable scientists.

The show has a distinction, as it’s the first Adult Swim original series to “utilize rotoscope technology, or the act of tracing over live-action footage frame-by-frame.”

Krasinski and Merchant are both alums of the US version of The Office. Krasinski, of course, starred as the lovable Jim. Merchant co-created the British version of The Office, and then served as an executive producer on the American version.

No word on a premiere date, but the show will start production later this year.

New Star Trek Series Will Be a CBS Streaming Exclusive

Star Trek fans, you’re getting a new series. That’s the good news. The bad news is that it’s going to stream exclusively on a platform that you probably don’t use.

CBS All Access, the network’s on-demand streaming platform, will be the exclusive home to the new Star Trek TV series. It’s set to debut in January, 2017.

CBS All Access is $5.99 per month.

No specific plot details have been announced, but CBS says “the brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.”

“There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series than on the heels of the original show’s 50th anniversary celebration,” said David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios. “Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we’re excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately.”

  • Amazon Is Ramping Up TV-Commerce

Amazon is about to make a huge push into TV-commerce.

Here’s the scenario: You’re using your Amazon Fire TV, catching up on episodes of The Good Wife. You spot an incredible pair of shoes. OMG, you say. I must have those. Then, with the help of Amazon, you have them at your doorstep in an hour.

Amazon has already started testing specific product ads inside the Fire TV experience – mostly for candy and Fitbits. But according to a report from GeekWire Amazon is about to turn the TV shopping game up a few notches.

    From GeekWire:

Amazon is looking to integrate products into its X-Ray feature, which currently leverages Amazon’s IMDb subsidiary to display details about shows such as the actors and music. Product integration with X-Ray will let viewers see specific items in a movie or TV show, and then click to easily purchase those products for themselves.

Not only that, but Amazon is reportedly developing its own, QVC-like shopping channel. You see something you like, you order it in a couple of clicks.

And with Amazon’s Prime Now one-hour delivery service (only available in a few markets as of now), you can see how the above scenario is very plausible.

Amazon makes its money when you buy things. That’s the idea behind its most popular service, Amazon Prime. If Amazon can get more purchasing opportunities into the TV experience, the place where many people spend the most leisure time, it’s a no-brainer.

  • Lauren Graham ‘Can’t Deny’ Gilmore Girls Netflix Revival

Lauren Graham ‘Can’t Deny’ Gilmore Girls Netflix Revival

So, the word is that Netflix is bringing back yet another beloved show. TV Line‘s Michael Ausiello reports that sources have confirmed Netflix has closed a deal with Warner Bros to bring back Gilmore Girls in a limited capacity.

The Hollywood Reporter also cited sources in reporting that a Gilmore Girls revival is a go. According to the sources, show creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and stars Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel are all on board.

The new show will reportedly take the format of four 90-minute episodes (movies?). Most Netflix original series have 10-13 episode seasons. So Gilmore Girls will be a little bit different.

Netflix has yet to confirm the news, and neither has the show’s stars.

But Lauren Graham also “can’t deny” it.

Graham took to Twitter to pretty much confirm the news.

Just a few months ago, Sherman-Palladino told a panel that Gilmore Girls just couldn’t get made in today’s climate.

“Today, you don’t sell ‘Gilmore Girls,’ nobody buys it,” Sherman-Palladino, the show’s co-creator, said on Saturday during her panel ahead of the “Gilmore Girls” reunion at ATX Television Festival. She argued that it was only because of the lack of bureaucratic obstacles from the Warner Bros. network that “Gilmore Girls” was able to flourish as it did when she first sold the idea for the show in 2000.

“It was a time when a network wasn’t looking for a cohesive brand,” she continued. “Their brand was about the individual voices of the show.”

But Netflix has a history of taking shows that don’t fit in on other networks and making them work. I guess Netflix used its troves of user data – that surely showed how popular the show is on its streaming platform – and made a smart decision about its potential as a new series.
