Cosby, Cybill And More Come To Hulu Plus

It’s almost the weekend and you’re looking for something to watch this weekend. You’ve already gone through all of The Cosby Show on Hulu Plus and you’re looking for your next fix of laugh track fueled family comedy. Well, Hulu has four new shows that you just might be interested in spending your weekend with.

Hulu announced today that Cosby, A Different World, Grace Under Fire and Cybill join its library today for Hulu Plus subscribers. This is the first time these shows have been available on any streaming platform. They join the already expansive collection of Carsey-Werner titles already available on Hulu Plus.

Here’s a brief synopsis of the four new shows being added:

Behind the giggles, chortles and laughs, shows like “A Different World,” in addition to introducing us to style icon Dwayne Wayne, taught us how to shed juvenile fears and face adult challenges. “Cosby” showed us how to roll with the punches and lean on our families as we get older (in addition to making us wish Madeline Kahn was a series regular in our lives). Chuck Lorre’s “Grace Under Fire” and “Cybill“ were both shows that comically portrayed the tough realities of the non-nuclear family of the 90s with strong female leads with distinctive differences. Brett Butler’s blue-collar divorcee Grace had grit, while Cybill’s multi-divorcee, struggling actress had…well…just a smidge more grace.

In other content acquisitions, Hulu announced in early February that it had obtained the rights to CBS TV’s extensive back catalog of shows, including Happy Days, Cheers and The Brady Bunch. Around the same time, Hulu Kids added a bunch of Pokemon content.

  • ‘Mako Mermaids’ Season 2: Another Production Vlog Released [Netflix Originals]

The second season of Mako Mermaids, one of the less talked about “Netflix originals,” is currently in production. It began shooting in December.

Fans (of which there are apparently plenty) were recently treated to a couple of production vlogs, which Jonathan M. Shiff Productions put on YouTube. Now, a third one has been uploaded:

These vlogs are the first Mako videos to hit the YouTube channel since the famous Nixie “lobster test” scene.

By the way, it looks like the first season is headed for DVD.

  • Netflix Acquires ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ As ‘Original’ For International Markets

From Dusk Till Dawn, the upcoming series from Robert Rodriguez, based on the film he did with Quentin Tarantino, just became a Netflix Original. At least internationally.

In the U.S., the show will debut on El Rey Network on Tuesday. In other Netflix territories (Canada, Ireland, Netherlands, Nordics and the UK) it will be exclusive to Netflix, debuting on Wednesday (and a week later on March 19th in Latin America).

The show comes from Miramax, which Netflix partnered with back in 2011. Netflix currently has two sequels to the original film available for streaming in the U.S.

Miramax EVP, Production and Development Zanne Devine said, “Netflix is one of the most innovative and leading global entertainment platforms existing today and is an absolute perfect fit for Miramax, Rodriguez’s vanguard talent and this filmmaker-driven series.”

Here’s the description of the show:

Along the Mexico-US border, bank robber Seth Gecko (D.J. Cotrona) and his violent, unpredictable brother, Richard ‘Richie” Gecko (Zane Holtz) shoot their way south after a bank heist in Abilene, Texas. The 10-episode series takes place over the course of one night, following the brothers as they try to evade a pair of Texas rangers, Earl McGraw (Don Johnson) and Freddie Gonzalez (Jesse Garcia). Along the way, Seth and Richie encounter former pastor, Jacob Fuller (Robert Patrick) and his family. The Geckos take them hostage and steal their RV to cross the border. Chaos ensues when the group detours to a strip club populated by vampires. With the law, the undead and some of Mexico’s most hardened criminals on their trail, the group must fight until dawn to get out alive.

Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos said, “We’re thrilled to premiere ‘From Dusk Till Dawn: A Netflix Original Series’ exclusively in our international markets. Robert Rodriguez is an amazing storyteller and we think our members will love his thrill-ride TV adaptation of the cult-classic.”

Rodriguez added, “I am excited about working with Netflix and Miramax to build an international audience for our series. This property has always resonated for viewers around the globe and we believe that it will be just as relevant for this new generation of fans.”

Just as relevant may be a bit of an overstatement. The original had Tarantino going for it, not to mention George Clooney and Harvey Keitel. But we’ll see.

Episodes of the show are an hour long. They’ll arrive in Europe and Canada on Netflix within 24 hours of the U.S. broadcast. In Latin America, episodes will be released on a weekly basis after the debut. Rodriguez directed four episodes. He also serves as executive producer.

It’s unclear if and when Netflix will get the show in the U.S.

Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos said, “Star Wars is one of the most iconic franchises of all time and this series joins a long line of Disney content that Netflix members are and will continue to enjoy for years to come. The Clone Wars marks an important moment as Netflix welcomes more and more first-run content from The Walt Disney Company and its subsidiaries.”

  • ‘House Of Cards’ Season 3 Script Is Now 1/13 Complete

It looks like the first episode of the third season of House of Cards has now been written.

Creator Beau Willimon tweeted on Friday:

On Saturday, Willimon held a 30-minute Q&A on Twitter. He didn’t reveal much in the way of details about the third season, but the subject did come up a few times.

When asked how long it would take to finish writing the season, he said, “Typically takes us about 7 or 8 months to write a season. But we start filming before we finish.”

He said they’ll “often go through six or seven major drafts” and continue to tweak them during rehearsals.

Asked about how many season there will be, he said they’ll simply stop when they reach the natural conclusion.

Filming will begin in “several months,” he said, adding, “knockknock.”

  • Yahoo: People Are Searching For Netflix 71x More Than HBO

It would appear that consumers are very interested in the competition between Netflix and HBO, as searches for the two rivals are seeing a significant uptick, according to Yahoo.

“People are interested in the ongoing ‘war’ between the two services as [netflix hbo] is spiking off the charts this week,” a Yahoo spokesperson tells WebProNews. “Over the past 30 days, it looks like Netflix has been more on people’s minds as [netflix] is searched for 42x more than [hbo go] and 71x more than [hbo].”

“Men dominate searches for both, but women tend to search more for Netflix than HBO services,” the spokesperson says. “When it comes to actual original programs, HBO’s [true detective] has been searched for over 2x more than [house of cards] over this past month. However, [house of cards] has beat out [girls hbo] by nearly 3x over the past month on Yahoo.”

House of Cards ranks highly for returning TV show searches in general over the past thirty days, coming out well ahead of HBO’s Game of Thrones.

There have been a great deal of searches for the Game of Thrones: Season 4 trailer.

Based on the earnings reports from Netflix and Time Warner, Netflix appears to be winning the subscriber battle, at least here in the U.S. with Netflix reporting 33.4 million domestic subscribers compared to HBO’s 29 million for the end of 2013. HBO, however, remains more profitable.

That is presumably the plan for this guy whose wife is preparing for the event with some House of Cards-themed Valentine’s cookies.

Showrunner Beau Willimon and actress Constance Zimmer (Janine) approve:

There’s a lot of excitement building around the second season. The parodies are even coming out already.

Still, it won’t be an Underwood closing the NASDAQ on the 14th. Netflix is sending Clifford the Big Red Dog.

  • Netflix Expands Scholastic Partnership With ‘Clifford The Big Red Dog’

Netflix and Scholastic announced an expansion of their partnership today giving Netflix exclusive streaming rights to the children’s favorite Clifford the Big Red Dog.

The show will hit Netflix on February 14th, which just happens to be the same day as the new season of Netflix original House of Cards (which has become known for its dog murder).

The partnership previously saw Netflix add shows like Goosebumps and The Magic School Bus.

Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos said, “We are delighted to expand our relationship with Scholastic with the addition of Clifford, one of its most popular and timeless series. Globally recognized as the lovable role model that he is, Clifford is a great addition to our catalog of family-friendly TV shows.”

“For more than 50 years, through books and television, Clifford has become the world’s most beloved and iconic dog,” said Deborah Forte, president of Scholastic Media and executive vice president of Scholastic Inc. ‘We’re thrilled that with Netflix, children and families can watch Clifford anytime and anywhere.”

They’re actually turning this news into a big production. Netflix also announced that to celebrate the content addition, on February 14h, Clifford himself will close the NASDAQ MarketSite in New York.

Netflix is reportedly to spend about $3 billion on television and film content this year.

  • ‘House Of Cards’ Season 2 Gets A Lot More Dog Murder In This Parody

The Unlikely Allies YouTube channel has released a new House of Cards: Season 2 parody, featuring an intro from executive producer fake David Fincher and fake Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, explaining how they used Season 1’s audience viewing habits to construct the second season.

As you may know, House of Cards itself was conceived based on Netflix viewing habits. The company knew it could gain an audience thanks to data on Kevin Spacey films and political dramas, for example.

“What was truly revolutionary was the platform,” explains fake David Fincher.

“Releasing all the episodes at once on Netflix enabled us unprecedented access into our audience’s viewing habits,” says fake Hastings. “We know when they’re watching, for how long…we even know when they pause or rewind.”

“And people overwhelmingly chose to repeat the scene in episode one where Frank Underwood murders a dog,” says fake Fincher.

“And Netflix listened,” adds fake Hastings. “We ended up with a Season 2 that stayed true to the gritty political drama that was Season 1 while adding all the dog murder that our audiences apparently couldn’t get enough of.”

  • ‘House Of Cards’ Season 2 Has An Episode Directed By Robin Wright

Actress Robin Wright, who recently won a Golden Globe for her role in Netflix’s House of Cards, will also went behind the camera for an episode of the upcoming season.

    The New York Times reports:

The director of the tenth episode of the second season is, in fact, Ms. Wright. On camera since she was a teenager, she is for the first time calling the shots, and is deeply engaged by every aspect of the opportunity. Two nights later, she would accept the Golden Globe for best actress in a dramatic series, a shimmering silver gown draped over her lithe, elegant frame, her classic features beaming in surprise during her aw-shucks acceptance speech. But in the editing suite, she was barefoot in jeans, with glasses under a newsboy’s cap.

Jodie Foster, who directed a popular episode of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, also reportedly directed an episodes of House of Cards: Season 2.

There should be some interesting directors’ commentaries for this season, if Netflix releases them like it did for Season 1.

David Fincher, who directed the first two episodes of the first season, didn’t direct any of Season 2, which debuts on February 14th.

Netflix just announced that it has renewed the show for a third season, which will begin production soon.

  • Laura Prepon Will Be in ‘Most’ Of ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Season 2

There have been a lot rumors about just how much more of Laura Prepon Orange is the New Black fans will see on the show. Apparently it’s not nearly as much of a concern as it was initially made out to be.

The whole thing started last year when BuzzFeed said she was leaving the show, and would be back only to tie up her storyline. Later, they said she’d only be back for a single episode. Later still, they said she’d be back for four episodes.

Now, US Weekly is quoting OITNB creator Jenji Kohan as saying that she’ll be back for “most” of the season.

Her role on the show after that is unclear. What would really be the point in even trying to speculate after all this?

We do know (based on words from Kohan both from the USWeekly report and past interviews) that the show is going to be moving away from focusing so much on the Piper and Alex (Taylor Schilling and Prepon) storyline, so it can spread some of the screen time to the rest of the cast.

In October, Netflix revealed that OITNB was officially its most successful show, and has since said that viewership has spiked in recent months.
