  • ‘Tropico 5’ Coming to PC on May 23

The release of SimCity in 2013 was a disaster combining the worst problems encountered with both always-on DRM and server capacity issues. Since that time, PC gamers have been in need of a new world-building god game.

Kalypso Media is now seeking to fill that void with Tropico 5. The publisher announced today that the latest Tropico game will hit PC on May 23. The game will also be released into U.S. retail channels on May 27. Xbox 360 and Mac versions of Tropico 5 will be coming sometime this summer, while a PlayStation 4 version will hit the latest generation of consoles sometime this fall. Kalypso also claims that it is working on a version of the game that will be compatible with Steam OS.

In Tropico 5 players will once again take on the role of El Presidente, the leader of a growing island nation founded in colonial times. By guiding the nation’s growth through the years and centuries, players will be able to shape the future of the Tropico world. Gameplay involves tackling the issues facing the island’s population, as well as guarding against forces and rival political factions that threaten El Presidente’s leadership.

Tropico 5 includes a new “dynasty” feature that differentiates it from previous Tropico titles. Players will be able to promote members of El Presidente’s family to positions of power such as ambassador or supreme ruler.

Tropico 5 also adds multiplayer modes into the mix. Players will be able to team up with other players in a cooperative mode or battle against each other for supremacy.

Kalypso last week released a new teaser trailer for Tropico 5. The video does not preview gameplay or any of the features announced for the game. It does, however, provide a look at the developer’s sense of humor by spoofing a famous scene from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies:

‘Tropico 5’ Announced for PlayStation 4

As hyped as it was, SimCity ended up disappointing nearly everyone. The game’s small city sizes required players to engage in multiplayer or build multiple cities rather than create the large, complex cities fans of the genre enjoy. Though small, the mechanics within cities were also odd, with pathing issues causing traffic jams or ineffectual fire brigades. Add to this the always-online DRM built into the game (which caused the launch fiasco) and it’s unclear who exactly the game was made for.

For fans of city-building games, however, there is hope. Kalypso Media today officially announced that Tropico 5 will be coming to the PlayStation 4.

Tropico 5 is the latest island-nation simulator from Kalypso, putting players in the shoes of “El Presidente” the multi-generational leader of Tropico. Much like other city-building games, players will have to build up their island’s infrastructure all while dealing with natural and man-made challenges and attempting to govern an ever-increasing population of citizens. The new game also adds co-op and competitive multiplayer modes (not mandatory) for up to four players.

“We are delighted to be able to work with Sony to bring Tropico 5 to PlayStation 4 and enter the next-generation market.” said Andrew Johnson, managing director for Kalypso UK. “The PlayStation 4 version of Tropico 5 will expand the Tropico brand to the new generation hardware and to a new generation of gamers.”

Kalypso has not announced a release date for the PlayStation 4 version of Tropico, but says that one will be announced “in due course.” The PC version of the game is currently set for release sometime during 2014.

  • Lana Del Rey Releases “Tropico”, Talks Sophomore Album

Lana Del Rey has released her highly-anticipated short film, “Tropico“, and it’s getting good reviews so far.

The “Video Games” singer portrays Eve and a stripper in the film, which is set to her dreamy vocals. “The Body Electric,” “Gods and Monsters” and “Bel Air” are all featured in the video, which shows us Del Rey in the Garden of Eden with her true love before they are thrown out for giving into temptation and find themselves in grimy, present-day L.A. The singer calls it a “biblical story of sin and redemption.”

Del Rey recently announced that there is indeed a second album in the works, despite her fears that she wouldn’t make another after the hugely successful “Born To Die”.

“I feel like everything I wanted to say, I’ve said already,” she said.

It’s taken two years, and although there is no release date set, the album is said to be nearly finished. The 27-year old took most of 2013 to create “Tropico”, which is 27 minutes long and pays tribute to Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, and Elvis, among others.
