  • May the Fourth Be With You, Always, On Star Wars Day

You’ve most likely seen the original trilogy, and depending on your age suffered through or enjoyed movies I, II, and III. Star Wars is so much deeper than that, it really has become its own culture, and for some a religion. The amount of stories, characters, and lore surrounding the Star Wars universe could completely rule a person’s life. For many, it does.

Which is why May 4th has been turned into Maythe4thBeWithYou, a day celebrating the greatness of Star Wars.

As a random bit of knowledge to solidify this greatness; did you know that Darth Maul, the silent sith warrior in Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace didn’t die at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi? In fact, he enjoyed most of his life as a weird spider cyborg creature. And why? Because Star Wars is great, that’s why. This is what Darth Maul eventually turned into…

    (image)

Because the Star Wars universe is so expansive, a character who was once a nearly silent bad ass villain in a single movie has a complete history. If you’re curious, you can read his entire wiki. Also, just so you know, Boba Fett didn’t die when he fell into the Sarlacc Pit in Return of the Jedi.

While everyone attributes Star Wars to the movies, they aren’t even close to what I first think of when talking about the universe. Which is why I want to take this time to share with you the great aspects of Star Wars you’ve most likely missed in your lifetime. It’s ok, not everyone can be as cool as me to have ascertained this cornucopia of knowledge throughout the years.

HK-47 (Assassination Droid from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic — or — meatbag hater)

    (image)

For anyone who’s played through the BioWare developed classic, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, will tell you that the cast of characters in the game are some of the most memorable in the expanded universe. The game takes place thousands of years before the movies, which allowed BioWare to really flex their creative muscle. And on that muscle, the bulgiest vein to appear was HK-47, the assassination droid.

HK-47’s whole bag is that he really hates humans and it’s his prime directive to kill as many of the surly meatbags as possible. You built him though, so he follows you around killing as many meatbags as your group can get a hold of. He became a fan favorite due to the wonderfully hilarious one liners, which you can enjoy below.

X-Wing, Tie-Fighter, and X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, AND X-Wing Alliance

During the 90’s LucasArts took the Star Wars universe and helped to publish some of the greatest video games of the decade, solidifying the expanded universe beyond what was seen in the movies. For proof, a person doesn’t need to look any farther than the space-sim series that started with X-Wing. If you ever wanted to pilot the X-Wings seen in the original trilogy, this game gave you the chance.

    (image)

The game was so well received it lead to an entire series of games, with a majority of fans believing Tie Fighter to be cream of the crop. It took the combat that was in X-Wing and expanded on it even farther, providing a unique story that let you fight directly for the emperor and provided a feeling of subterfuge. Something you hadn’t seen in flight-sims before it.

I have fond/hair pulling memories of trying to get these games to work on my family’s old DOS powered PC in the mid-90’s. It was plagued with bugs that kept you from being able to boot it up, but once you did, there was no looking back.

Grand Admiral Thrawn – The ‘Batman’ of the Empire

    (image)

He doesn’t have force powers, and he has no brute strength to speak of, but that didn’t keep Thrawn from becoming one of the biggest powers in the Empire. This guy was right alongside Darth Vader and the Emperor, but wasn’t featured until the expanded universe started to grow.

Without any powers, Thrawn relied on his intelligence, cunning, and military tactics to forge his legacy. If you talk with hardcore fans about who the smartest character in the universe is, most will instantly mention Thrawn. The chiss (his race) admiral has done it all: quashed rebellions, exposed and defeated traitors, went against the Emperor’s commands and lived, while also being allowed to keep his status.

All because Thrawn would out-think, out-class, and out-wit his opposition. He also had a taste for art, and believed studying a culture’s art was an avenue to thinking as they do and in turn beating them. Cool as a cucumber.

  • Celebrating Nyan Cat’s One Year Birthday

Celebrating Nyan Cat’s One Year Birthday

How does it feel when you watch memes age before your eyes? Does it give you pause, realizing how many trends have become popular, only to be forgotten almost as quickly since Nyan Cat was uploaded? After enough memes start aging, you begin to realize you’ve spent a great deal of time online, and, after a while, things like Nyan Cat come and go. Melancholy looks at a life spent online aside, today is a day of celebration.

In honor of the most non-annoying YouTube meme, perhaps ever, here’s the 100-hour version of the Pop Tart Cat song that helped hack a thousand websites, or, well, one anyway:

If, after a day or two, you can actually tear yourself away from that–kids, this is a great “one more video, mom” video–here’s a video of the “Nyan Cat’s First Birthday Party! [OFFICIAL]” which apparently means this is the official party video, meaning, any other videos of the party are not? Who knows in this day and age…

Of course, what would a Nyan Cat celebration be without Twitter joining in? Not much of one:

Happy 1st birthday, Nyan Cat. You’re just as adorably obnoxious as when you were uploaded 1 year ago today: http://t.co/XvfaYdTa(image) 23 hours ago via TweetDeck ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Make the #HAPPYBIRTHDAYNYANCAT hashtag trend, people.

  • Bruce Weber: Out at Illinois, Trends on Twitter

Bruce Weber has been relieved of his head coaching duties at the University of Illinois, and as is the case with most sports-related topics, his firing has become a steady trend on Twitter. The social media era, if anything, has at least made one thing perfectly clear: the revolution may not be televised, but it will be talked about on Twitter.

According to reports, while getting fired is never good for your ego, don’t shed too many tears for Weber. His post-employment compensation package is nothing to turn your nose up at. The ex-coach’s buyout is $3.9 million spread out over three years. Weber’s overall record at Illinois was certainly not horrible–210-101–but his lack of success in recent seasons clearly contributed to his ouster.

Weber’s greatest accomplishment at Illinois is taking his first team to the NCAA Championship (with Bill Self’s players), a trip that gave us the following “fist” speech:

Much like the most popular comment points out, Weber’s stay at Illinois received mix reviews; the [sics] remain intact:

WHAT?!?! His first year he went to the national championship game with bill selfs players. FIVE YEARS LATER….. Bill self has all his players and wins a National Chapmionship. What is illinois doing?

    Cmill1221 3 years ago 10 (image)

The mixed nature of the reaction to Weber’s firing is also evident on Twitter; although, it looks like the “nays” are winning:

A big thank you to Bruce Weber for all he has done for Illinois bball. He’s always been a huge supporter of the OK and our foundation. #ILL(image) 3 hours ago via Twitter for iPhone ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

…and just as mysteriously as Bruce Weber appeared, he vanished into the night.(image) 1 hour ago via Twitter for iPhone ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

As for Weber’s potential replacement, the masses, as well as some respected sources weighed in here, too:

i feel like the replacements for bruce weber many are speculating on are too smart to take the illinois job. it’s a trap.(image) 6 hours ago via TweetDeck ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

For all those people calling Illinois a Top 10 job, why couldn’t they land anyone better than Bruce Weber when Self left?(image) 1 hour ago via Twitter for Mac ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

That was quick: @danwolken reports that VCU’s Shaka Smart “is leaning” toward taking the Illinois job: http://t.co/TwnYiCkc(image) 2 hours ago via TweetDeck ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

So there you have it. Any thoughts on who might replace Weber? If Shaka Smart does anything resembling last season’s Final Four run, the athletic department almost has to make a run at him, right? Oh, and not to rub salt in the wounds or anything, but Weber, at least in the lead image, looks like the “Okay Guy” face you see in so many Reddit memes.

  • Tom Brady’s Graphics Won Super Bowl Sunday

Tom Brady’s Graphics Won Super Bowl Sunday

While his team may not have defeated the New York Giants — Justin Tuck, not Eli should’ve been the MVP — it’s clear the graphic NBC used to “promote” the New England quarterback were in a world of their own. In fact, the three graphics may have trumped David Beckham’s commercial for the most awkward moment award of the Super Bowl.

In case you missed them, these gems showed up sometime during the third quarter, and to tell the truth, it looks like NBC used outtake photographs instead of official promotional material. Maybe during the session when these pictures were taken, there were a number of photography sessions, and these were pieces of greatness were supposed to be throwaways. However, instead of the discarding them, someone trolled Brady and used the silly images instead.

The lead image is a gift in and of itself, but the fun didn’t stop there:

    Tom Brady graphic

    Tom Brady graphic

These images left such an impression, a number of prominent NFL blogs jumped on the bandwagon, as folks try and digest all that we were exposed to during last night’s “event.” According to Kissing Suzy Kolber’s irreverent style, Brady’s graphics are “so hawt.” In the oh-so-quotable words of Christmas Ape:

[Brady] might have also hung up an underthrown deep ball to Gronkowski that was picked, but Collinsworth wanted to blame that one on Gronk for some misguided reason, which is dumb but helps us stick with a theme. Anyway, Dreamboat got some Brady-ain’t-care trolling for his own in before all was said and done, posing for an NBC in-game montage looking FIERCE…

Over at Yahoo’s Shutdown Corner blog, the Mighty MJD gets in on the Brady fun, as does Deadspin. From Deadspin’s perspective, NBC’s apparent goal was to make players look “as demented as possible.”

All things considered, I’m going to stick with the idea that NBC’s graphic designers are a bunch of trolls. Whatever the case, Brady’s graphics are gifts that keep on giving.

  • Do a Barrel Roll! In Google’s Search, and Enjoy

As a mid-late 20’s something, I’m blessed with remembering the glory days of video games with both the SNES and Nintendo 64. One of the games which everyone had to play at the time was Star Fox, and the sequel Star Fox 64. While both games are renowned as classics, Star Fox 64 had one element which transcended gaming and entered the internet meme world – “DO A BARREL ROLL!“.

Now, Google is in on it, by letting their entire front page do a barrel roll if you search for either “do a barrel roll” (of course), or searching for “z or r twice“.

The simplicity of the meme is key. Venturing over to YouTube, here’s the original portion of the game that asked players to tap Z or R twice. The meme has gotten so huge that I had to search for “do a barrel roll original” to find it.

That has lead to this College Humor video, with Star Fox accepting you can’t barrel roll away from who you are:

There are plenty of other barrel roll videos to look for, with one of my favorites being the 10 hour loop of the quote. People are so taken with the fact that they can do a barrel roll in Google, it has become one of the trending topics for the day on Twitter. Here’s what some have had to say:

To simulate doing a barrel roll on Google in IE, lay on the ground and do a barrel roll while on Google. 21 minutes ago via Twitter for Mac · powered by @socialditto

did you all “do a barrel roll” on Google? you gotta try it! Do they have a special engineering deparatment for these things? 22 minutes ago via web · powered by @socialditto

I’ve been sitting here for the past 10 minutes hitting the refresh button on my “do a barrel roll” search. #google #trendyhobbies 23 minutes ago via UberSocial · powered by @socialditto

I absolutely love stories like this; proving that there’s the kid in all of us who would rather play with the box than the toy. All of the things we could be discussing on Twitter, and instead we just want to DO A BARREL ROLL! Love it, have fun and don’t hurt yourself. Just wish I could find the Google engineer with a nerd like sense of humor, so I could shake his hand.

  • Even Negativity Brings Fame On YouTube and Twitter

If you know the story of Justin Bieber, he gained his fame due to a talent scout discovering him on YouTube. Could Rebecca Black be the next sensation to follow in Bieber’s footsteps? Google+Reader”>Her video has already reached 9 million views on YouTube, mostly due to negativity. She already has a rather lengthy Wikipedia entry, detailing her rise in fame.

Michael J. Nelson, a comedian, was the first to poke fun at the song. On March 11th, the day the huge view spike hit, Nelson tweeted this:

Let this be on your lips as you head into the weekend http://youtu.be/CD2LRROpph0 (it also answer the ? “what’s the worst video ever made?”) 4 days ago via TweetDeck · powered by @socialditto

Later, the viral based Comedy Central show, Tosh.0 poked fun at the song titled “Friday”:

Rebecca Black: “Are you sure these are the lyrics you want me to sing?”
Producer: “What are you talking about?”
Rebecca Black: “This part where I just kinda slowly explain the ordering of the days of the week?”
Producer: “That’s the hook, baby! We breakin’ it down for the kids! They gonna know those days!!”

On Monday, ‘Friday’ became available to download on iTunes. For $0.99, you can own the now huge YouTube sensation. The song has received over 550 ratings, and is averaging 2.5/5 stars.

Currently, Rebecca Black is trending high on Twitter and the YouTube views show no sign of slowing down. The true question now remains, will her success continue? The song was produced by a legitimate company, by the name of Ark Music Factory. Though her song is trending due to its widely accepted awfulness, will it lead to bigger thinks for Black?

I won’t keep you in suspense any longer. If you haven’t listened to the song yet, here’s the YouTube video.

(WARNING: the song is extremely catchy. If you’re caught singing it, expect laughter coming your way).
