For the purpose of this article, we’re going to assume that you’re traveling by plane this holiday season. Thankfully, air travel is coming down in price already thanks to a decrease in fuel costs. Outside of normal market factors, travelers can get even better deals if they’re willing to remain vigilant.

The first step is to watch various social media accounts. For general deals, be sure to check out @airfarewatchdog. The account regularly posts cheap flights from various airlines. If you want more specific airlines, be sure to follow each airlines’ Twitter account. The airlines will regularly post deals and when canceled flights are available:

For some, scouring social media may not be the most effective option when looking for last-minute travel deals. For those people, it’s better to use sites dedicated to finding deals. One such site is Travelzoo – a site that finds cheap flights between American cities for less than $100. Another site – TravelPirates – will find flyers cheap round trip deals between an American city and a foreign country for way less than the usual cost.

As long as you’re willing to remain vigilant and maybe even make a few sacrifices (such as leaving on early morning flight); you’re going to find some good last-minute travel deals this holiday season.

  • Travel Deals Heating Up in September

It may seem a bit early to start thinking of the holidays, but experienced holiday travelers know that travel plans should be booked months in advance. Waiting until later in the year will mean higher fares, less flexible scheduling, and more headaches. Travel companies also know this and travel deals are now heating up in the race to book last-minute summer and fall travelers.

The United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA) has declared September to be “Travel Together Now!” month. The organization, a nonprofit that represents tour operators, is offering special deals through its website during the month. Customers can receive deals on group travel to locations in every continent, including Antarctica.

“Our members’ business patterns tell us that September is when travelers like to book their bucket-list journeys, so we brought all the deals together in September to give them easy access,” said Terry Dale, President and CEO the USTOA. “It’s the first time USTOA has ever orchestrated such an extensive promotion, and we’re certain travelers will find their perfect trip among the array of offers.”

Other travel companies are wrapping up the summer of 2014 with new deals on worldwide travel.

Travel distribution company Last Minute Travel this week announced that it now offers over 10,000 different “travel activities, attractions, and transfers” through its website. The company, which competes with other travel distribution companies such as Orbitz and CheapTickets, offers shows, tours, and other events at a discount off retail prices. The site offers booking for activities and transfers in 85 countries across the world, in addition to flight and hotel booking.

“By booking their trip activities and transportation in advance, savvy travelers can save time, anxiety, and money,” said Ofir Cohen, EVP of Global Activities and Groups for Last Minute Travel. “Whether customers are traveling somewhere specifically for an experience or just looking for stuff to do while they’re in a new city, our website’s huge inventory and user friendly format makes it easy to find everything [they are] looking for.”

  • Travel Deals: A Cure For the Common Christmas

“Next year we’re not doing a Christmas tree or gifts at all! We’re all just going to go to Hawaii!”

Each year since my youth my mom has hollered this through a straitjacket of stringed lights as if it was a threat. Meanwhile, my siblings and I kept waiting with bated breath for her to make good on delivering this punishment in paradise. After almost three decades, I’m still waiting – but you don’t have to.

You don’t have to wait for another year to go by either.

In fact, if that holiday malaise is setting in as you sip your Starbucks and stroke the screen of your smartphone, keep in mind that holiday travel deals are still in progress – and just a tap away thanks to innovations introduced by online travel businesses. A few CEOs of the top OTAs (online travel agencies) sat down with USA recently and explained how staying ahead of their competition means simultaneously simplifying your booking process and saving you money:

CEO of Priceline.com North America, Christopher Soder said, “Mobile has grown very fast. One example for using your phone will allow you to search for hotels near you. A lot of our mobile bookers book for check-in that night within a mile of their location. On our iPad app you can define the neighborhood by just drawing on the map and saying, ‘Show me hotels in this area.’”

Dara Khosrowshahi (CEO of Expedia) also spoke about applications, “An interesting new feature on the Expedia app is itinerary sharing. If I share my itinerary with you, it will show up on your Expedia app, and you will get updates on gate changes, arrival time, etc. It is updated live.”

Regarding travel deals, he added, “We negotiate with hoteliers for same-day and last-minute bookings on the mobile app. They’re sometimes 50% off.”

Barney Hartford (CEO of Orbitz Worldwide) agreed, “The use of mobile for same-day bookings is huge,” adding, “Orbitz Inside Deals has killer deals on properties that are only available for 72 hours, and we will send some of our members a heads-up about them before they go on the website. We also have destinations where we offer a promo code that is good just for 24 or 48 hours.”

Between ease of access and discounts, travel agencies are making a getaway sound awfully alluring. So, if a holiday at home is falling short of earth shattering this year – why not salvage what’s left of your leave, hop on a plane (or cruise ship), and go Instagram some island memories?

After all, nobody’s dreaming of a trite Christmas.
