Toronto Shooting “Unprecedented” In Canadian History

Canada is well-known for hockey, cold weather, and, perhaps most foreign to those of us in the states, an extremely low crime rate. It was famously documented in Michael Moore’s “Bowling For Columbine” that many Canadians don’t even keep their doors locked, and while that sort of trusting mentality surely doesn’t go for every citizen, it does illustrate the general feeling of safety held by Canadians.

Perhaps that’s why, when a shooting occurred at a large outdoor event in Toronto yesterday, people were completely shocked and left fearing what it means for the future of their city. The incident left two people dead–a teenage girl and a young man in his 20’s–and injured 19 others, including a baby. Officials are calling it the biggest crime they’ve ever seen.

“It is the most serious crime of its kind that has ever taken place in the city of Toronto,” police chief Bill Blair said. “The level of violence is something we have never experienced.”

Blair stated that there were handguns involved, one of which was recovered at the scene; they know more than one person was responsible for firing shots, but aren’t sure yet just how many. He did say that the shooting was “unprecedented” in Canada’s history; however, a recent incident of gun violence in a Toronto mall left one man dead and several people injured when someone opened fire in the food court. While that shooting wasn’t as big in scope as the more recent one, people are clearly shocked that their city is amping up the crime rate.

  • Brett Lawrie Tweets About Almost Getting Shot

Toronto, Canada is well-known to be one of the safest places in North America; that’s why, when shots were fired inside a mall food court over the weekend, Canadians were shocked. Brett Lawrie, third baseman for the Toronto Blue Jays, was there when it happened.

An unidentified man–who hadn’t been caught as of Sunday night–fired several shots in the food court, killing one man and wounding several others. Many additional injuries were reported when people in the crowded eatery began to run for their lives, causing a stampede. One woman went into premature labor as a result.

Lawrie, who was at the mall food court just seconds before the shots were fired, tweeted about it as it was happening.

Pretty sure someone just let off a round bullets in eaton center mall .. Wow just sprinted out of the mall … Through traffic …

Toronto is known for their surprisingly low numbers when it comes to gun-related incidents, so the weekend shooting certainly rattled people all over the country…especially since it comes on the heels of another shocking story about a porn star who allegedly murdered, dismembered, and partially ate another man, but also because it happened at such a well-known public spot as Eaton Centre mall, which draws tourists from all over.

”Any place for discharging a firearm in Toronto is dangerous. In the food court of the Eaton Centre on a Saturday evening, it’s not only dangerous, it’s outrageous,” police chief Bill Blair said. ”I believe every Torontonian is shocked and appalled by this crime.”
