  • PGA Championship 2011 App: Tiger Woods Updates On The Go!

Alright, I know that people care about other aspects of this year’s final major other than Tiger Tiger Woods, ya’ll – but you have to admit that he is once again dominating the media coverage.

Not to say that’s any different from any other tournament where he is a contender, but it seems like there are multiple story-lines involving Tiger this morning as we kick off the 2011 PGA Championship (or as Jim Nantz would say, Glory’s Last Shot).

Can he get back on track on his way to catch Jack Nicklaus in total majors? How does his game look coming off surgery? Why is he sort-of wearing red on a Thursday? And of course we have that whole Steve Williams thing.

For the latest on Tiger, Phil, Rory, and everyone else, the PGA gives you the official PGA Championship app for iOS.

Live Marquee Group Video, Push Alerts, Live Leaderboard, Player Scorecards and more, will keep you following Glory’s Last Shot, while you are at the course, on the go, or as a supplement to broadcast coverage. Par 3 Live video coverage will feature nearly every player in the Championship at The Atlanta Athletic Club for all four rounds. Plus, watch daily highlights of the on course action.

So you get live streaming video of selected groups as well as static coverage of the par 3’s where you can watch all the players come through one-by-one. You can also enable personalized alerts that notify you when specific players start and end round, when they make a specific score like a birdie or a double bogey, or you can set the notifications to alert you to any score made by a specific player.

The app is optimized for the iPhone 4 but is also available on the iPad.

More on the PGA Championship, including where to watch it online, is available here.

    Following The PGA Championship

The final Major of the PGA Tour starts today, and it’s an event that’s not just for TV anymore. Sure, the bulk of the viewership will be done on Saturday and Sunday, but for those of you who are at work can’t get to a TV this afternoon, there are, of course, a number of ways to follow all of the action from the Atlanta Athletic Club.

Naturally, it’s a current Twitter trend, and with Tiger Woods actually birding his first hole, the PGA Championship trend was given a boost.

If Tiger has a good day, expect him to take control of Twitter. Speaking of, there are a some Twitter accounts worth following if you’re intent on keeping up with the PGA Championship while at work, like the The PGA of America, PGA Tour, and Dan Jenkins for starters.

That said, if you’re focusing on Twitter for your coverage, you’re missing out completely. Over at PGA.com, the entire tournament is being broadcast, which is good for those of you who may have to work–or be out of the home for the weekend. The quality of the online stream is about as good as you can ask for, especially if you’re using a broadband connection. An example:

Clearly, more and more sports are taking hints from the incredibly-successful March Madness On Demand offering by CBS. Year after year, it only gets bigger in terms of viewers.

It should be noted the PGA’s video interface is not limited to the stream. Users can take advantage of a number of features including chatting via Facebook or Twitter, simulated course flyovers, a look at the leaderboard, and perhaps the Coup de grâce, by taking advantage of the Snap-And-Share function, viewers can create their own highlights. The technology is powered by SnappyTV.com, and it’s pretty damn cool.

Users can share highlights, like so:

All of the highlights can be viewed here, unfortunately, however, they are not embeddable. Surprisingly, none of Tiger’s under-par putts have made it up to YouTube yet, but that will no doubt be remedied this afternoon. Furthermore, if he continues a hot start, expect it to dominate the headlines, especially on Twitter:

Later on this afternoon, TNT gets in on the online broadcast, which can be seen here. As the power of the Internet grows and grows, it’s clear things like sports are not just for TV any longer.

  • Tiger Woods Out Of U.S. Open, Announces Via Twitter

It’s always a bad day for golf when Tiger Woods has to miss a big tournament, so I guess you can call this a pretty terrible one for fans. Today, Tiger Woods announced via Twitter that he will be unable to participate in this year’s U.S Open Major Championship.

Tiger expressed his frustration to his near one million followers a short while ago:

Not playing in US Open. Very disappointed. Short-term frustration for long-term gain. 2 hours ago via Twitter for iPhone · powered by @socialditto

This year’s second major tournament will be held at the famed Blue Course at the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland. The beautiful course is often put in the category of best courses in America, and was recently renovated in 2009. The U.S. Open will kick off next Thursday.

Tiger’s left leg has been the source of his troubles since he ruptured his ACL and suffered a double stress fracture of his tibia during the 2008 U.S. Open. He miraculously finished the tournament, hobbling his way to victory at Torrey Pines in an 18-hole playoff against Rocco Mediate. It was truly one of the best sports performances many people have ever seen.

He returned this year to competitive play after some personal issues sidetracked him in 2009. At this years Masters Tournament, Woods aggravated his injuries and suffered an MCL sprain and a mild Achilles strain in the same leg. He attempted to give The Players Championship a go but had to withdraw after just 9 holes.

Woods also posted this statement to his website, saying he doesn’t want to risk further damage:

I am extremely disappointed that I won’t be playing in the U.S. Open, but it’s time for me to listen to my doctors and focus on the future. I was hopeful that I could play, but if I did, I risk further damage to my left leg. My knee and Achilles tendon are not fully healed. I hope to be ready for AT&T National, the next two majors and the rest of the year.

Tiger Woods is golf’s biggest draw and the sport needs him when it comes to interest and ratings. Plus he’s just the most dynamic player to watch, period. Here’s to hoping he can return as soon as possible.

Here are some other tweets rolling in about Tiger:
