  • Jimmy Fallon Honors David Letterman on ‘The Tonight Show’

Jimmy Fallon was serious for a few minutes on Monday night’s episode of The Tonight Show. He wanted to honor David Letterman, who is signing off from his Late Show on Wednesday night.

CBS News reports that Jimmy Fallon even got a little teary-eyed when lauding the man who–for more than a year–was his biggest TV competition.

“I, like every kid who grew up watching him, will miss him,” Fallon said, noting that one of his teachers once told him he was going to grow up and replace David Letterman.

The most serious aspect of Jimmy Fallon’s tribute came as he recalled David Letterman’s words during The Late Show’s first night back on the air following the terrorist attacks on 9/11.

“The city was in shock, and we’re all looking for answers, and we wanted to see what Dave had to say and we looked at him to say something,” Fallon told his audience. “He said, ‘There’s only one requirement for any of us, and that’s to be courageous, because courage, as you might know, defines all other human behavior.’”

“David Letterman is courageous,” Jimmy Fallon added. “Have a nice retirement, Dave!”

David Letterman’s last official guest will be Bill Murray on Tuesday night. Wednesday’s show will feature several network surprises as Letterman signs off for good after more than three decades on TV.

  • David Letterman: Could Ellen DeGeneres Replace Host?

Late night television will never be the same following the news that David Letterman intends to retire from hosting his Late Show With David Letterman program.

It seems Letterman is finally ready to move on from the late night hosting gig:

The man who owns this network, Leslie Moonves, he and I have had a relationship for years and years and years, and we have had this conversation in the past, and we agreed that we would work together on this circumstance and the timing of this circumstance. And I phoned him just before the program, and I said ‘Leslie, it’s been great, you’ve been great, and the network has been great, but I’m retiring.

David Letterman plans to retire in 2015, ending his run as the host of one of the longest running late night programs in television history.

Former late night rival Jay Leno recently retired (albeit, a second time) from hosting The Tonight Show and was replaced by Jimmy Fallon. Fallon talked about Letterman’s announcement and even shared reasons why he thinks Letterman may want to retire.

The Top 10 List is a longtime trademark of Letterman’s show and hopefully Letterman appreciated the homage.

    All sentiment aside…what happens now?

CBS no doubt recognizes that its station is about to have a huge void in the late night line-up. Not just anyone can replace Letterman; choosing haphazardly could prove disastrous.

NBC found this out the hard way the first time they attempted to replace Jay Leno. Conan O’Brien was selected, but his fans did not follow him to a new show and channel. In the end, his brand was too distinct and it was not a good fit.

Jimmy Fallon was already hosting a late night program on the station, so it wasn’t as if he was a stranger. His stepping in for Leno has proved to be a success despite early concerns.

Perhaps CBS will take this into consideration as they work to replace Letterman. A number of names have already been brought up, including Stephen Colbert and Ellen DeGeneres.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show is a very popular daytime television show, but there’s no telling how DeGeneres will fare in the late night hours.

Stephen Colbert of the satirical Colbert Report seems to be at the top of the list, but its up to the network to try and figure out which candidate is well enough known to draw interest without damaging the existing Late Show brand.

  • Lauryn Hill: Has She Returned To Her Old Self?

Soul singer and rapper Lauryn Hill’s career has been pretty eventful to say the least.

First, she put out a classic album with her ex-band mates the Fugees in 1996, called “The Score.” Then she embarked on a solo career and put out another classic album with the “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” which won her five Grammy awards.

But soon after, things began to fall apart for the New Jersey native, as her long time mentor and collaborator Wyclef Jean revealed the two had a steamy affair during the group’s heyday, and soon after that, Hill taped an episode of “MTV Unplugged,” which was highly criticized for her overall performance and the emotional breakdown she suffered while playing.

And if that wasn’t enough, she was sent to prison for tax evasion years later.

So there’s no doubt that Hill’s fans have been thrilled as of late, since it seems the 38-year old has turned all of that around and has started to sound and look like her old self again.

Earlier this week, Hill took her talents to the “Late Show With David Letterman,” where she did a tribute performance to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Beatles appearing on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” and she was wonderful.

Decked out in a stylish plaid ensemble and sporting a funky hat, Hill sounded at the top of her game, which could mean that 2014 could be the year that she has a rebirth of sorts, and hopefully she’ll get back to making the music that made her famous years ago.

So why did the “Zion” singer leave showbiz in the first place? She said it was because she lacked the proper support system around her, and there were some internal things that she needed to fix first.

“There were a number of different reasons [for leaving show business],” she said. “But partly, the support system that I needed was not necessarily in place. There were things about myself, personal-growth things, that I had to go through in order to feel like it was worth it.”
