Netflix’s Queen Elizabeth Series ‘The Crown’ Is Its Most Expensive Yet

The Crown, Netflix’s upcoming series about the life of Queen Elizabeth II, is going to be huge – in terms of scope and cost.

The Telegraph reports that the show is Netflix’s most expensive to date – £100 million, or about $157 million.

The streaming company ordered a 10-episode season of The Crown last November.

According to the Telegraph, the show will span six seasons – 60 total episodes.

The show will follow the Queen from her wedding in 1947 to present day. It will focus on not just her, but her interactions with Britain’s heads of state over the years.

The Crown is storytelling that lives somewhere between television and cinema from Britain’s foremost chroniclers of modern politics, class and society,” says Cindy Holland, vp original content at Netflix.

The Crown is not only about the royal family but about an empire in decline, a world in disarray and the dawn of a new era,” says writer Peter Morgan, who penned the Oscar-winning film The Queen.

The series stars Wolf Hall‘s Claire Foy as the Queen, Doctor Who‘s Matt Smith as Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh, and John Lithgow as Winston Churchill. It is billed as “the inside story of two of the most famous addresses in the world – Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street – and the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th century.”

It will hit Netflix next year.

  • Queen Elizabeth II Drama ‘The Crown’ Hits Netflix in 2016

Queen Elizabeth II Drama ‘The Crown’ Hits Netflix in 2016

Netflix has just announced another original, set to premiere in 2016.

The streaming company has ordered a 10-episode season of The Crown, a show about Queen Elizabeth II and various historical events during her long reign. The play on which the new show is based, Peter Morgan’s The Audience, “centers on the weekly audiences given by Queen Elizabeth II to prime ministers that date back from her accession in 1952 to the present day” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Morgan, who also penned the Oscar-winning film The Queen, will join Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) on the project.

We first heard about Netflix and The Crown when the company had just beaten out the BBC and ITV for rights to the historical drama. At that point it was likely that The Crown would become a Netflix original, but today we get the confirmation.

“The Crown is storytelling that lives somewhere between television and cinema from Britain’s foremost chroniclers of modern politics, class and society,” said Cindy Holland, vp original content at Netflix. “We are enormously proud to be the exclusive home of a series from Peter Morgan and Stephen Daldry that promises to fascinate and entertain audiences around the world.”

“The Crown is not only about the royal family but about an empire in decline, a world in disarray and the dawn of a new era. I am beyond thrilled to be reunited with partners from film, theatre and television for this epic project and delighted to be working for the first time with Netflix,” said Morgan.

The series will premiere in 2016. Deadline is reporting that the showrunners have already found their Queen – 30-year-old Claire Foy. She’ll be one Queen, that is – as the series tackles The Queens’ reign from 1952-on, multiple actresses will likely be tapped to play the royal.

  • Netflix May Get New Series ‘The Crown’ About Queen Elizabeth II

According to various reports, Netflix may be getting a new original series called The Crown, which follows Queen Elizabeth II, and is based on Peter Morgan’s play The Audience.

Morgan, who wrote the film The Queen, is behind the production along with Stephen Daldry. Netflix has yet to deliver confirmation that it indeed has the show, but The Guardian reports that it “is understood to have beaten off competition from the BBC and ITV” for it.

The report also puts the show’s cost at £100m.

TechCrunch says the show is to follow Queen Elizabeth II “over the course of various historical events during her reign,” and “an initial concept for the show could have different actresses portraying the Queen at different points in her life.”

Netflix’s David Wells said earlier this week that the company is focusing on adding more highly-rated and exclusive content. This project could very well fit into both of those categories.

Helen Mirren played the queen in the The Queen, as well as in The Audience, but is not expected to do so in the new series.
