  • The Black Keys Gear Up For New Album Release

The Black Keys have released the second single for their upcoming album Turn Blue. The latest release, Bullet in the Brain, was played for BBC Radio 1 during a live session. The band were featured guests of Zane Lowe’s program. You check out the session in its entirety by clicking on this link.

The Bullet in the Brain release came off the heels of the band’s video release for their lead single Fever on Thursday. The quirky video was directed by Theo Wenner and featured Keys frontman Dan Auerbach as a sweaty televangelist.

The video for Fever brought along a bit of a mystery. The video prominently shows a phone number on the bottom of the screen, and if you were brave enough to call, it led to a recording of a man saying, “I’m calling because I’m interested in your releasing my album.” The voice belongs to Patrick Carney, the band’s drummer, who is actually prank calling The Black Keys record label, Nonesuch. He tells the label that he’s from a New Age band called Quartzazium, and that they are seeking a four-album deal.

Turn Blue is the band’s eighth album. It was recorded last summer in Michigan, Nashville, and Los Angeles. It was co-produced by the Danger Mouse and the band. The drop date for the album is May 13. You can also catch the band on Saturday Night Live on May 10. Charlize Theron is set to host the sketch comedy for the second time.

Black Keys fans are anxiously awaiting the album’s release date. The group hasn’t released a new album since 2011’s El Camino, which won the Grammy for best rock album that year.

  • Bieber Rips Carney On Twitter After Grammy Remark

Justin Bieber has shot back at the drummer for The Black Keys, Patrick Carney, following a remark he made after the Grammy Awards on Sunday night.

When asked about Bieber’s supposed “snub” at the awards show–which saw The Black Keys take home several trophies–Carney said, “He’s rich, right? … Grammys are for music, not for money … and he’s making a lot of money.”

Bieber promptly fired back on Twitter.

He must not be too mad, though, because soon after, he retweeted Stewie Griffin.

  • Johnny Depp Receives Generation Award at the MTV Movie Awards

Johnny Depp, actor, musician, and all-around famous individual, received the Generation Award at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday. In addition to accepting the statuette for his contributions to the world of film and popular culture, Depp decided to flex his considerable musical muscles by performing “Gold on the Ceiling” with the Black Keys. All in all, I’d say it was a pretty snazzy night for the “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” star.

On-hand to present the Generation Award to Depp were Aerosmith’s Joe Perry and Stephen Tyler, which gave them a prime opportunity to sing the actor’s praises. “Johnny Depp is a rock star in the world of movies,” Tyler remarked. Perry, meanwhile, stated that Depp was a “a gusty actor, a gutsy musician, a gutsy artist with passion.”

The Black Keys’ lead singer-guitarist Dan Auerbach had nothing but kind thoughts and feelings to express about the actor. After the show, Auerbach told CNN that Depp was “legitimately great on guitar”. Anyone who was alive and/or into alternative music back in 1993 should already be aware of this fact. Depp, as you may recall, teamed up with Butthole Surfers frontman Gibby Haynes to form the band P way back in the day. Their first — and only — album was released in 1995, though a reissue was delivered in 2007. Look it up, kids. It might blow your mind.

Otherwise, the 2012 MTV Movie Awards unfolded as expected. Host Russell Brand made jokes about penises, Jennifer Anniston won “best on-screen dirt bag” for her performance in “Horrible Bosses”, and “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1” brought home the trophy for movie of the year. In other words, unless you’re knee-deep in the world of pop culture on a regular basis, chances are you’re going to be completely disconnected from these events.

Of course, the highlight of the evening was Depp’s Generation Award and his performance with the Black Keys. Honestly, I’m kind of sad that I missed the show. I suppose I’ll just have to live vicariously through all of these Twitter users. You can find a sampling of their reactions below.

  • The Black Keys Lonely Boy Video Is Set For Viral Stardom

Blues-rock duo The Black Keys are pretty good at this viral music video thing, and their newest release is a testament to this fact.

Their new single “Lonely Boy” is now officially out for digital purchase, and will be out on November 25th on vinyl. The song is off their upcoming album El Camino, set to release on December 6th.

I’m a pretty big fan of these guys, and I thought that their album Brothers was one of the best albums of 2010. This new song is good, and it does the one thing that most new Black Keys songs do, which is sound distinctly like the Black Keys. New songs always require multiple listens for me to find out how I truly feel about them.

But I don’t need multiple viewings of this video to say that they hit another home run. Simple, catchy, funny – it’s got viral written all over it. Check it out below:

One commenter writes, “My 2yr old niece loves this video, she’s had me replaying this song for almost an hr now so she can sing/dance along to it.” The Black Keys have the approval of toddlers, so you know it’s a winner.

As I mentioned before, this isn’t The Black Keys’ first go-round with awesome viral music videos. This video for “Howlin For You” has YouTube denizens begging for a film to be made in its honor –

And my personal favorite is the video for “Tighten Up,” which has over 13 and a half million views. It’s a real heart warmer –
