Thandie Newton Calls Out Starbucks over Distasteful Statue

Actress Thandie Newton slammed coffee giant Starbucks this week over a figurine she saw in one of their stores.

The figure, which Newtown posted on Twitter, is of a black figure in a loin cloth and safari hat holding coffee beans.

“Seriously @Starbucks? At the counter – Loin cloth and Safari hat on a black child. Happy New Year circa 19th century,” the actress wrote on Twitter.

Starbucks’ customer service account was quick to apologize. The company says the statue has been removed.

“We are very concerned to learn of this incident & we can’t apologise enough. We have removed the figure & are investigating,” the company tweeted to Newton.

Reaction to Newton has been mixed.

  • Thandie Newton Shares Photos of Baby Booker

Thandie Newton gave birth to her baby boy Booker about six weeks ago, but only shared photos of her new bundle of joy via Twitter a couple of days ago.

Newton and husband Ol Parker welcomed Booker into the world back in March. At the time she tweeted about how excited they were about his arrival and mentioned that his birth took place at home.

Home births are controversial among members of the medical community. While most women will give birth to a healthy baby regardless of her location, complications can arise–endangering both the mother and baby. Hospitals provide a safety net that–while not always needed–provide an extra sense of security that most people find comforting.

Fortunately for Thandie Newton and Ol Parker, everything went well during and following Booker’s birth. This was her third home birth, so she’s clearly very comfortable with the process, and has a midwife she loves.

Check out the photo Thandie shared of baby Booker.

When Booker was born in March, Newton shared this message with her Twitter followers.

Thandie Newton starred most recently on television in Rogue and on the big screen in Half of a Yellow Sun, which premiered in London earlier this month. She appeared for years on the hit TV show ER as Dr. John Carter’s (played by Noah Wylie) love interest and wife. She and Ol Parker wed in 1998. Baby Booker joins big sisters Ripley and Nico.

Congratulations are certainly in order for Thandie Newton, Ol Parker and the rest of their family on the arrival of the very handsome baby Booker.

  • Thandie Newton is Pregnant with Third Child

“Half of a Yellow Sun” star Thandie Newton revealed that she is expecting her third child with husband Ol Parker. The 40-year-old actress didn’t say how far along in her pregnancy she is when she spilled the beans at the Toronto International Film Festival, but did say the baby is due next year.

While having a baby past age 35 poses some risks, which can be scary, a source close to Newton said that the actress “couldn’t be more happy.” The source also noted that Newton isn’t showing much, and you can barely make out her baby bump in photos taken during the film festival. “You can barely tell she has a bump and she’s been dressing different because of it,” the source said.

Newton’s other two children are ages 8 and 12. Both of the children are daughters, so one can imagine that Parker is hoping for a boy to bring up the testosterone level in the home a little. Newton isn’t the only celebrity to announce she is expecting recently–Kate Winslet is also expecting her third child soon. Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who is best known for her role as Meadow Soprano, announced her pregnancy via Instagram over Labor Day Weekend.

The British actress’s pregnancy hasn’t slowed her down yet. Newton, who won an SAG Award in 2004 for her part in “Crash,” has been busy promoting “Half of a Yellow Sun” lately. The Nigerian film had its world premiere on September 8 during the Toronto International Film Festival. The film, directed by Biyi Bandele, takes place during the Nigerian-Biafran War during the late 1960s.

So far Newton hasn’t posted any news of her pregnancy to her Twitter account, but she has been busy promoting the new beauty blog she will debut soon, Thandie Kay. Hopefully she’ll come up with some beauty tips to pass along to expecting women after it starts up.
