  • All New Watch Dogs Gameplay Emerges From TGS 2013

Watch Dogs is already one of the most anticipated fall releases in the West, but what about Japan? The country’s gamers are slowly opening up to Western developed games, and Ubisoft wants to court them with Watch Dogs. That’s why the publishers showed off an all new gameplay demo at last weekend’s Tokyo Game Show.

In the new 11 minute gameplay demo, we get to see Watch Dogs protagonist Aiden Pearce making his way through a new area of Chicago. In this new area, Aiden meets up with Jordi Chin – a side character that will help him through the game. In this particular mission, Aiden has to take out a target before his cover is blown.

The Japanese won’t be getting Watch Dogs until next year, but we’ll be getting it on November 19. The PS4 version comes out a bit earlier on November 5 and the Xbox One version launches on November 22.

  • Check Out This New Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Gameplay

Tokyo Game Show may be over, but the news and videos pouring out of Japan’s largest gaming expo continue to flow. Case in point – Square Enix released an extended version of its previous Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII trailer to include more gameplay.

In the extended trailer, we get a look at some new environments, one of the sure to be many boss fights in the game, and a little tease at the end regarding Snow’s relationship with Lightning and his place in the story.

In other news, Final Fantasy Network reported over the weekend that Lightning will be getting more cameo costumes. It was already revealed that those who pre-order the game will get a Cloud Strife costume, but now it’s revealed that Lightning will be able to dress up as Aerith from Final Fantasy VII as well. At this time, the costume is only available to Japanese consumers who buy a strategy guide, but it will no doubt be made available to Western gamers through other means.

  • Microsoft: Xbox One’s Disc Drive Prevents It From Being Stood Vertically

Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 could be stood horizontally or vertically. In fact, Microsoft and Sony would both regularly display their respective consoles standing vertically. That won’t be a possibility with the Xbox One.

At Tokyo Game Show, Microsoft’s Albert Panello told GameSpot that players shouldn’t stand their Xbox One vertically. It’s not like a vertical Xbox One is impossible as the design would allow for such an orientation. Instead, Panello says that the Xbox One’s slot loading drive was built only for horizontal orientations and that players should go vertical only “at [their] own risk.”

Why would Microsoft remove the ability to stand the Xbox One vertically? After all, the Xbox 360 let users stand it vertically. Panello says that the majority of Xbox 360 gamers (80 percent) stood their consoles horizontally. Sure, Microsoft may be ignoring 20 percent of its fans who prefer to stand their consoles vertically, but it shouldn’t be a big deal to most players who prefer to go horizontal.

So, where does this leave the PS4? For both the PS2 and PS3, Sony made a console that could be stood vertically. That’s not going to change with the PS4 despite it also sporting a slot loading drive. In fact, Sony has already shown the PS4 standing vertically in some of its promo videos and photographs.

Xbox One Wasn't Built To Go Vertical

Is it a big deal that the Xbox One can’t be stood vertically? That really depends on what kind of space your entertainment center has. Some people prefer to go vertical as it affords them more space, but most Xbox One owners will probably not have any problems.

  • TGS 2013: Final Fantasy XV Gets A Sort Of New Trailer

Square Enix surprised us earlier this year at E3 2013 when it was revealed that the oft delayed Final Fantasy Versus XIII had become Final Fantasy XV. That was only one part of the surprise, however, as Square also revealed that the game was being moved from the PS3 to the PS4 and Xbox One.

It’s now been a few months since the initial announcement, and fans are awaiting any news on the title with renewed faith. Unfortunately, Square Enix had nothing new to share at this week’s Tokyo Game Show, but it did reveal a new trailer for the title. It mostly uses footage that we saw back at E3, but there’s a few new scenes in this latest trailer to justify another viewing.

Final Fantasy XV continues to be quite the looker. In fact, it may be the best looking next-gen game we’ve seen so far. The only other comparable game that comes to mind is The Witcher 3 – another RPG from a studio known for its attention to visuals.

There’s no firm release date for Final Fantasy XV just yet, but we’ll hopefully not have to wait long for it. Square Enix can’t afford to delay its next big Final Fantasy title for another seven years. In the meantime, however, fans can look forward to the HD remaster of Final Fantasy X/X-2.

  • TGS 2013: PlayStation App Launching On iOS, Android This November

With SmartGlass, Microsoft has turned any mobile device into a second screen for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Sony has done the same in a limited fashion with the PS Vita, but will be expanding it to more mobile devices with the launch of the PS4.

During its Tokyo Game Show 2013 keynote, Sony announced that it will be releasing a PS4 remote play app on both iOS and Android in November. The app will allow any mobile device to serve as a second screen or even a controller in compatible PS4 titles.

Beyond serving as a second screen, the PlayStation App will also let users access many features of the PSN. That means players will be able to interact with friends, send multiplayer invites, see their trophies and access the PlayStation store all from within the app.

The PlayStation App will probably gain more features in the coming months to better match what SmartGlass can do. Currently, SmartGlass users can watch TV shows and get instant information on said show through their tablet or smartphone. Sony will undoubtedly add similar features and more to the wide range of multimedia apps hitting the PS4.

Here’s a video of Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida showing off the PlayStation App during last night’s keynote. It should be noted that the translation is a little garbled so please bear with it:

  • TGS 2013: Here’s 12 Minutes Of Metal Gear Solid V Gameplay

At E3 2013, we got out first look at Metal Gear Solid V gameplay. At TGS 2013, Kojima took to the stage to show off even more gameplay from his latest title.

In this latest gameplay demo courtesy of IGN, we get 12 minutes of pure gameplay from the PS4 version of Metal Gear Solid V. The running commentary and in-game voices are in Japanese, but the gameplay should be pretty easy to follow for Metal Gear veterans. Stealth is still the focus of this game with Snake having to sneak into a compound.

The gameplay trailer does show some new features, however, in the form of X-ray vision that lets Snake see enemy soldiers through walls and environmental obstacles. Snake can also pick locks and drive vehicles. Speaking of which, MGSV is the first game in the series to go open world so players will be able to employ all sorts of transportation when traveling throughout the world.

There’s still no solid release date for Metal Gear Solid V, but the title will be released on both current and next-generation consoles.

  • TGS 2013: Gravity Rush Is Getting A Sequel Or Something

Gravity Rush was one of the earliest reasons to own a Vita. The startlingly original game from Sony’s Japan Studio made the best possible use of the Vita with its unique controls, expansive open world and PS3-like visuals. Now it looks like Sony Japan may be making a sequel.

At Tokyo Game Show 2013, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan released a short teaser for a new project from the Gravity Rush team. There’s not a lot here besides an invitation to “fall again” and the announcement of a “new project from Team Gravity.” That sounds like a sequel to me, but it could be any number of things.

A Gravity Rush sequel would probably make most sense on the Vita, but Sony may be working on a new game for both the Vita and the PS4. Gravity Rush has proven to be pretty popular for a new IP with its protagonist – Kat – showing up in PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale. A new Gravity Rush title for the PS4 and Vita with cross play and cross buy capabilities would undoubtedly be welcome by fans of the series.

While there’s not much to go off of yet, Tokyo Game Show is just starting. Sony may share more information regarding the title as the show progresses over the weekend.

  • TGS 2013: Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Trailer Reminds Us That It’s Still Coming Out This Year

For most publishers, HD remasters are a quick and dirty way to squeeze a bit of extra cash out of gamers’ nostalgia. Square Enix is unlike most publishers in this regard as its HD remasters are getting the love and attention that a brand new retail release would. That’s why it’s been working on Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD for almost two years now, but it’s release is nearly upon us.

At Tokyo Game Show 2013, Square Enix reminded us that its HD remaster of both Final Fantasy X and its sequel – Final Fantasy X-2 – were still on track for a 2013 release. The publisher also shared a new trailer that shows off more of the in-game events and the newly remastered FMVs. It should be noted that Square Enix didn’t bother to rerecord any lines for these games so you’re still stuck with the original performances that barely passed muster in 2001.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD will be released this winter on the PS3. The games will also be released separately on the PS Vita for those that want to take the games on the go. Unfortunately, cross buy is not an option so bust out those wallets if you intend to buy the games on both platforms.
