Pat Summitt Plaza & Statue Almost Finished

Friends, family, and fans alike are invited to witness the dedication of the Pat Summitt Plaza and Statue in Knoxville, Tennessee.

On November 22, at 11:00 a.m., everyone will be able to see the finished product of the plaza and statue at the corner of Lake Loudoun Boulevard and Phillip Fulmer Way.

Internationally-known artist and sculptor David Adickes of Houston, Texas is currently building the bronze statue of Summitt.

The winningest coach in NCAA men’s or women’s basketball was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s in 2011. Summitt made the brave decision to continue as head coach of the Tennessee Lady Vols for the 2011-2012 season, but with a lesser role. During that season, her assistant since 1985, Holly Warlick, took most of the responsibilities as head coach. Warlick became Summitt’s successor after Summitt retired at the end of the 2011-2012 season.

Summitt ended her 38-year career with a record of 1,098 wins in 1,306 games.

Many fans are already putting the dedication in their calendars.

While some are upset they won’t be able to make it to the event.

For those who do plan on attending, be prepared for some road closures in the area. At 9:00 a.m., Phillip Fulmer Way will close from the Andy Holt Tower administrative parking garage entrance to the intersection with Lake Loudoun Boulevard. Then at 10:30 a.m., Lake Loudoun Boulevard will close from Neyland Drive to Volunteer Boulevard. Attendees can find available parking at the G-10 garage, which is located between Thompson-Boling Arena and Neyland Stadium.

So wear your orange and support the amazing woman that is Pat Summitt. (As a non-Vol fan, the orange part was very hard to say, but Summitt really is a great lady.)

  • Pat Summitt To Step Down From Incredible Career

Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt announced in a statement today that she will be stepping down from her position after an incredible 38 years, which spawned a 1098-208 record and 8 national championships, as well as 18 Final Fours. The news comes after Summitt was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease last year.

Alzheimer’s is a fatal disease that attacks and destroys brain cells, which leads to loss of memory and other brain functions. Currently, there is no cure. But Summitt is hopeful for the future and still plans to have a role in her players’ lives.

“I’ve loved being the head coach at Tennessee for 38 years, but I recognize that the time has come to move into the future and to step into a new role,” Summitt said. “I support (Assistant Head Coach) Holly Warlick being named the next head coach, and I want to help ensure the stability of the program going forward. I would like to emphasize that I fully intend to continue working as head coach emeritus, mentoring and teaching life skills to our players, and I will continue my active role as a spokesperson in the fight against Alzheimer’s through the Pat Summitt Foundation Fund.”

She went on to say, “If anyone asks, you can find me observing practice or in my office. Coaching is the great passion of my life, and the job to me has always been an opportunity to work with our student-athletes and help them discover what they want. I will continue to make them my passion. I love our players and my fellow coaches, and that’s not going to change.”

During Summitt’s reign, Tennessee has earned a number one seed in the NCAA Tournament 21 times and is the only school to play in all 32 Tournaments.

I know #PatSummit‘s legacy will be her 8 nat’l championships and 1,098 wins, but it should be her 100% graduation rate. #LadyVols(image) 1 hour ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto
