  • Temple Run Is Coming to the Big Screen, So There’s That

At some point in the next couple of years, there’s going to be a Temple Run movie.

That’s the word from Hollywood Reporter, who says that Warner Brothers is in negotiations to bring the popular app to theaters alongside producer David Heyman. Heyman has produced the Harry Potter film franchise, as well as I Am Legend and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. There’s no date set for the release, as the whole thing is still in its early phases.

According to THR, “the story would center on an explorer who, having stolen an idol from a temple, is chased by demonic forces.”

Temple Run, as you probably know, is an endless running game first released on iOS in 2011 by Imangi Studios. It later came to Android and Windows Phone. It quickly became one of the most-popular games around.

So popular, in fact, that Imangi released a sequel (Temple Run 2) earlier this year – a release that wound up breaking mobile game download records.

Temple Run, the app, is no stranger to movie tie-ins having released versions specific to Disney’s Brave and Oz the Great and Powerful.

In lieu of making a jab at Hollywood for completely running out of ideas, I’ll just say this. Temple Run, the movie, sounds like it has a better premise than the upcoming Angry Birds movie. There’s some elements of Indiana Jones that can be given to a Temple Run movie, I’m sure. I don’t know, I think I’m going to go back to bed now.

  • Now Somebody’s Made A Game About Edward Snowden

It seemed that former NSA contractor Edward Snowden had reached the ultimate level of notoriety when a couple of Hong Kong filmmakers made a short film about his time in the city. It’s easy to forget, however, that you’re not truly infamous until somebody makes a quickly thrown together game about you.

Last week, Michele Smeets released Snowden Run 3D on Android and the Web last week. As the name implies, it’s an infinite runner (a la Temple Run) and it features Snowden on the run from a government agent. Along the way, Snowden collects USB sticks and laptops containing government secrets. The game also features a humorous power-up called the “USSR Hydrogen Bomb” which is activated by making a call to “Uncle Putin.”

Unfortunately, there is no gameplay footage of Snowden Run 3D, but here’s a screenshot:

    Snowden Run 3D

As you can tell, it’s not exactly the best looking game out there. There’s a reason for that, however, as the game was made in under 30 hours as part of the Ludum Dare Challenge. The creator states that he would love to go back and refine the game now that he’s not under a deadline.

Oh, and before you think there’s some kind of hidden meaning behind the game, there’s not. The creator says that his game is merely a parody, and isn’t meant to point fingers at any one party.

If you want to play the game, you can do so on your Android device or on your PC.

As for the real Snowden, he’s not running from anything just yet. He’s still waiting to hear back on his asylum request from the Russian government, and must remain in Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport until then.

  • Better Late Than Never: Temple Run Finally Comes To Windows Phone 8

One of the main obstacles facing Windows Phone is its lack of apps. The situation is getting better with high-profile apps like Pandora finally making the jump to Microsoft’s mobile platform, but it’s still lacking the high-profile mobile games that Android and iOS players have enjoyed for the past few years.

Engadget reports that the situation is getting better this week as Temple Run will finally make its debut on Windows Phone during the Game Developers Conference. There’s no word on whether or not its immensely popular sequelTemple Run 2 – will make it to the platform.

Alongside Temple Run, Windows Phone will also be getting a few more popular mobile titles, including 6th Planet, Propel Man, Orcs Must Survive, Fling Theory and Ruzzle. With these additions, Microsoft is one step closer to achieving parity with the Apple Appstore and Google Play. It still has a ways to go, however, until it can offer the breadth of content available on competing platforms.

All the above games should be available this week. A quick check of the Windows Phone store reveals that they haven’t been released just yet, but it shouldn’t be much longer before Windows Phone 8 owners can finally enjoy one of the best mobile games of recent years.

  • Temple Run 2 Downloads Break Mobile Game Records

Imangi Studios, the developer behind the popular Temple Run games, this week announced that Temple Run 2 has broken mobile download records. The title, released on January 17, has been downloaded over 50 million times in only 13 days on iOS, Android, and Kindle devices. The previous record holder was Angry Birds Space, which reached 50 million downloads in 35 days.

Imangi claims that Temple Run 2 saw over six million downloads in just its first 24 hours on Apple’s App Store. The original Temple Run has seen over 170 million downloads.

Temple Run has evolved into something so much bigger than us,” said Keith Shepherd, co-founder of Imangi. “The game has performed beyond our wildest dreams, and we are thrilled that gamers and fans have embraced Temple Run 2 in such a short period of time.”

Much like Angry Birds before it, Imangi is capitalizing on the success of the Temple Run series with merchandise. Temple Run apparel, comics, and board games can be bought in addition to the mobile games.

  • Temple Run 2 Android Version Now Live in the Google Play Store

Temple Run 2 Android Version Now Live in the Google Play Store

Android users, your wait is over.

Temple Run 2, the sequel to the smash hit game Temple Run, is now available inside the Google Play Store.

Go ahead and download without fear. This is the legit Temple Run 2. As you may have known, eager fans of the game were fooled last week by at least two fake versions of the game. The apps were quickly deleted, but were up in the Google Play Store long enough to cause some headaches.

Temple Run 2, from Imangi Studios, arrives for Android devices exactly one week after launching on iOS. That version saw over 20 million downloads over the weekend.

Like the previously-launched iOS version that shot straight to the top of the app charts, Temple Run 2 for Android features “beautiful new graphics, gorgeous new organic environments, new obstacles, more powerups, more achievements, special powers for each character, and a bigger monkey.”

  • Temple Run 2 Android Version Coming Jan 24 [REPORT]

    UPDATE: It’s here!

Android users shouldn’t have too much longer to wait for their chance to get in on all the Temple Run 2 fun. The game, which is tearing up the iOS charts, should be coming to Google Play this week.

Android Community confirmed with the game’s devs that the projected launch date for Android is January 24th (Thursday).

Temple Run 2 launched for iOS last Wednesday in New Zealand, which tipped the eventual U.S. launch. It hit the U.S. App Store on January 17th and was soon the most popular app around. At the time of the iOS launch, Imangi said that an Android version would be coming soon, but didn’t provide any specifics.

Temple Run 2 for iOS is the top free app in the App Store, and has held that position since about 12 hours after its launch last Thursday. The app, which has been downloaded 20 million times already, is also the second-highest-grossing app in the App Store. Like its predecessor, Temple Run 2 is free-to-play, but features plenty of in-game opportunities for paid add-ons.

In the days leading up to then (and even around that time), Android users should be careful that they’re downloading the real thing. At least two fake Temple Run 2 apps has made their way to the Google Play Store, receiving ‘thousands’ of fake reviews and 4-5 star scores.

If you haven’t had a chance to play the game, it features “beautiful new graphics, gorgeous new organic environments, new obstacles, more powerups, more achievements, and a bigger monkey.”

  • Running with Friends Is Zynga’s New Temple Run-Like Social Game

Zynga has just released a new entry into their “with friends” game series, and it’s the first time that they’ve ventured into the world of true action games.

This one is called Running with Friends, and it puts you right in the middle of the running of the bulls.

But as of right now, it’s not yet available in the U.S.

    Here’s the app description:

NO BULL—RUNNING IS BETTER WITH FRIENDS Outrun, outmaneuver and outscore your friends in a thrilling bull run through the living, breathing city of Pamplona, Spain. Running with friends is a fast paced action game which pits you against wily bulls, determined opponents and the general madness of the busy streets of spain. Jump, dodge and slide your way to victory!

The social element (the “with friends” part) comes in the form of score challenges.

From the looks of it, the game is heavily influenced by games like Temple Run. Speaking on Temple Run, Imangi just launched Temple Run 2 in the U.S., and it’s already surged to the top of the App Store charts. It’s currently only available for iOS, but they promise that an Android version should be launching soon.

It’s currently up in the Canadian App Store, but not yet available in the U.S. I’ve reached out to Zynga for information on future launches, and will update this article when I hear back.

    Run! Jump! Slide! Tilt!

Temple Run 2, which we first told you arrived in the New Zealand App Store yesterday, has officially launched in the U.S. The sequel, like its predecessor, is free-to-play. The original Temple Run is one of the more popular games in iOS, generating over 170 million downloads.

Temple Run 2 promises “beautiful new graphics, gorgeous new organic environments, new obstacles, more powerups, more achievements, and a bigger monkey.” But it also retains much of the same gameplay feel that made the original so popular.

And good news, Android users – your game is coming pretty soon. Temple Run devs Imangi Studios’ co-founder Keith Shepherd told Polygon that the Android version of Temple Run 2 is “almost done” and should launch some time next week in Google Play. He did caution that it’s not set in stone, and that the scheduled launch is still tentative.

Meanwhile, iOS users can download the brand new game today.

  • Amazon Adds Unity Plugins To Its Game Development Tools

Mark my words – Unity is going to be the next big game engine that everybody uses. Unreal Engine is still going to be the go to development suite for big budget console and PC games, but more and more mobile developers will be turning to Unity for its ease of use and wide array of user created assets. The folks at Amazon obviously realize this, and are taking preemptive measures to make it easy for Unity developers to craft games for its platforms.

Amazon announced today that it has launched free Unity plugins for its In-App Purchasing and GameCircle APIs. Developers with Unity games on Kindle Fire devices will now be able to easily add these features to their games without having to write a lot of additional code.

“Unity is one of the most popular tools for building mobile games,” said Mike Frazzini, Director of Amazon Games. “Amazon’s In-App Purchasing and GameCircle APIs help developers reach more customers, keep them engaged, and make more money. Every week millions of customers are playing GameCircle enabled games and are able to compare scores and compete against friends. We want to make it as easy as possible for developers to quickly integrate these features and our new, free plugins make it incredibly simple to do so for anyone using Unity.”

Keith Sheperd, Founder and CEO of Imangi Studios, said that the GameCircle plugin for Unity was incredibly easy to integrate into their hit game Temple Run. He said that normally integrating GameCircle would have taken his team a few days, but the new plugins reduced the integration time to a few hours.

Developers building Unity games for Kindle devices will want to use these plugins. They’re free and available to any developer that want them. You can grab the plugins over at Amazon’s developer site. Now get out there and start crafting the next mobile masterpiece.

  • Humanity Has Spent 54,000 Years Playing Temple Run

I’m pretty hard on the mobile gaming scene. Most of the games on the platform are either trying to be like a console game or they’re just not very fun. One game, however, has constantly kept my interest. Temple Run is super simple and it feels like it was built just for touch devices. People around the world obviously feel the same.

The guys at Imangi Studios have put together a simple infographic showing some of the milestones that Temple Run has achieved since launching in September of last year. In that time, Temple Run has reached over 100 million downloads. Out of those downloads, 10 billion sessions were played and a collective 54,000 years were spent playing it.

As is the case with most mobile games, Temple Run enjoys the majority of its market share on iOS with 68 percent of all downloads coming from the device. Coming in second place is Google Play with 30 percent of the downloads. Having just launched, the Amazon App Store version is understandably short on downloads with only two percent.

If you have yet to try out my personal mobile game of the year, grab Temple Run for either iOS or Android. You may find yourself, like me, playing it for hours to beat the high score.

  • Temple Run Gets A “Brave” Makeover For iOS, Android

Temple Run Gets A “Brave” Makeover For iOS, Android

If you’ve paid very much attention to the world of iOS and Android gaming, you’ve probably heard of Temple Run. It’s an addictive little game wherein you help the main character – an Indiana Jones lookalike – escape from some evil skull-monkey creatures that he has angered.

Though it appeals to players of all ages, the game is particularly popular with kids (full disclosure: my son has played it a lot more than I have). Disney, it seems, has caught onto the game’s popularity and struck a deal with the studio behind Temple Run – Imangi Studios – to create a new version of the game based on the upcoming Pixar movie Brave.

In most respects Temple Run: Brave is identical to the original. You still spend your time running, jumping, and sliding as you try to get away from the monster chasing you. Only this time, instead of the would-be Indy, you’re playing as Merida, the main character of Brave. And since evil skull monkeys are rare in Scotland, you’ll be running from the large angry bear that serves as Brave‘s main villain. And you’ll also get the chance to try your hand with Merida’s bow. Certain sections of the game will present you with targets to shoot as you run, earning rewards. We’ll try not to think about why you can’t just turn and shoot the bear.

Temple Run: Brave hits the iOS App Store and Google Play on June 14th. Check out the official trailer for the game below:

And for good measure, here’s a trailer for Brave, which arrives in theaters on June 22nd.
