  • Tumbleweeds For Netflix Shows During Monday’s Emmys

Tumbleweeds For Netflix Shows During Monday’s Emmys

Netflix originals accumulated a total of thirty-one Emmy nominations last month, but Monday night’s ceremony didn’t amount to much for them. They did manage to snag seven awards in the Creative Arts session, but those were given before the Primetime ceremony, and don’t get nearly the attention.

Orange is the New Black’s Uzo Aduba won Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. The show also won for Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series. House of Cards only managed an award for Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour).

Documentary The Square won Outstanding Picture Editing for Nonfiction Programming, Outstanding Cinematography for Nonfiction Programming, and Outstanding Direction for Nonfiction Programming.

In total, House of Cards had thirteen nominations while Orange is the New Black had twelve, The Square had four, Derek had one, and Brave Miss World had one.

It was a tough year with a lot of great competition, especially in drama. Nobody would want to have to compete against Breaking Bad, let alone in its amazing final season. At least that will be gone next year.

Netflix made history at the Emmys last year with the first awards for web-first shows. That’s old news at this point. Still, thirty-one nominations and seven wins is pretty good for year two. There’s also the fact that two of the shows that were nominated last year – Arrested Development and Hemlock Grove – hadn’t returned in time to be part of this year’s honors.

  • Mayim Bialik Expands TV Repertoire

    Mayim Bialik Expands TV Repertoire

Mayim Bialik began her TV career by playing Blossom on NBC’s sitcom of the same name. Following her foray into acting, however, Bialik would go on to get her PhD in neuroscience and wind up landing a much more appropriate role as Amy Farrah Fowler on CBS’s The Big Bang Theory. Now, Bialik in an Emmy-nominated supporting actress on TV’s number one show and is a household name. Fortunately, Bialik has not let the stardom go to her head, though, as she is now the host on a much humbler television series, Candid Camera.

Candid Camera first landed on television in 1948 on ABC as a hidden camera show. The show was hosted by its creator, Allen Funt, from its beginnings until 1993. Since that time, the series has been hosted by Funt’s son, Peter, and a plethora of other hosts – the most recent addition being Bialik.

When most Hollywood stars take roles deemed less popular by the general populace, they usually try to draw as little attention to their new position as possible (a la Tara Reid). Bialik, however, cherishes her new role, citing a childhood fondness as the reason for her excitement:

I am very excited to be working with TV Land, Electus, and the legendary Peter Funt on the newest incarnation of the original feel good reality show, Candid Camera. Since I was a child, I have found it impossible to not smile when I hear, ‘Smile! You’re on Candid Camera!’ and I am honored and tickled pink to get to be a part of this amazing franchise.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlKMPhN1_oQ

While some may think that hosting a gag TV show is far from Bialik’s line of expertise, the Big Bang Theory star sees the shows as a form of science, in a way: “It is kind of a giant social experiment to see how people behave when there’s no logical explanation for why things are happening. It’s fascinating to see how people try to make sense of these gags.”

Candid Camera aired its first episode of its newest season last night on TV Land. New episodes will continue to air tonight through Thursday night, with new weekly episodes being aired every Tuesday night.

  • Netflix’s ‘Narcos’ Reportedly Picks Up Joanna Christie As One Of Its Leads

Netflix’s ‘Narcos’ Reportedly Picks Up Joanna Christie As One Of Its Leads

Narcos, the upcoming Pablo Escobar television series headed for Netflix next year, has just picked up another cast member.

The Wrap is reporting that the show has added Broadway star Joanna Christie, who will play one of the lead roles.

Christie is known best for her work in the Broadway musical Once, as well as in the play Equus, in which she co-starred with Daniel Radcliffe. She’s no stranger to television, however. She has appeared on Mr. Selfridge, Starlings, Doctors, Misifts, Inspector Lewis, No Angels, and Holby City.

In June, news emerged that Narcos had added Game of Thrones’ Pedro Pascal as well as Manolo Cardona.

The show stars Wagner Moura, a well-known star in Brazil, as Escobar, and is being run by Chris Brancato. The official description is as follows:

The series will chronicle the life and death of Escobar, the ruthless cartel boss and known terrorist who also was a congressman, a family man and revered by the poor as a new Robin Hood….[It]begins with the hunt for Escobar but moves on to the rise and subsequent fall of the Cali cartel, the north valley cartel, and the move into Mexico….

The show is being produced by Gaumont International Television, with whom Netflix has worked on Hemlock Grove.

  • Netflix Is ‘Positive’ Arrested Development Season 5 Will Happen

Netflix Is ‘Positive’ Arrested Development Season 5 Will Happen

It’s been a while since we’ve heard any news on the Arrested Development front. It took many years for the show to finally be revived after its premature cancellation at FOX. Netflix eventually swooped in, and saved the day, debuting Season 4 as a Netflix Original last year.

Obviously, questions about another season immediately started after its debut, and Netflix has pretty much been on board the whole time. Creator Mitch Hurwitz has also expressed a desire to keep the story going, supposedly with a movie, and then more show.

Over a year ago, Hurwitz indicated that he already had some story elements in place for another season. Search data indicated that fans were hungry for Season 5. Talks were already underway last summer for it.

But as with Season 4, getting that whole cast and crew back together for another season of magic (okay, Season 4 wasn’t as magical as the previous 3, but it was still nice to see everyone back together for it) is a difficult thing to do, but according to USA Today, which quotes Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos, the company is “positive” that a fifth season will come eventually. Gary Levin reports:

Sarandos is also “positive” that another season of Arrested Development is in the offing: “It’s just a matter of when,” he says, adding that sorting out actors’ schedules is a concern: It was “a fair criticism” of last year’s revival of the cult comedy “that the cast didn’t appear on screen often enough together.”

Netflix has a ton of other shows on its plate, but Arrested fans can rest easy knowing they’ll get more, even if it requires some patience. But hey, if you’re an Arrested Development fan, you’re very used to waiting.

Earlier this year, Netflix signed Hurwitz on for additional shows.

  • Bob Iger Talks Disney’s Relationship With Netflix

Bob Iger Talks Disney’s Relationship With Netflix

Disney posted its fiscal Q3 earnings on Tuesday. The company had a record quarter with earnings per share up 27% from the prior year.

CEO Bob Iger said, “Our strategy of building strong brands and franchises continues to create great value across our company. This quarter we delivered the highest EPS in the company’s history, and we’ve now generated greater EPS in the first three quarters of FY 2014 than we have in any previous full fiscal year. We’re extremely pleased with these results and we are also thrilled with the spectacular performance of Guardians of the Galaxy, which holds great promise as a new franchise for our company and once again reinforces the tremendous value of Marvel.”

Something else that is bound to continue to help Disney’s Marvel brand is the set of shows coming to Netflix. We’re not expecting anything Guardians of the Galaxy-great with those, but it’s hard to imagine they won’t draw in the viewers.

Late last year, Netflix and Disney announced a deal for at least four different shows and a mini series including shows about Daredevil (the first one up), Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. The miniseries will be The Defenders. This will all stretch over multiple years starting with Daredevil in 2015.

This is not the first time the two companies have partnered. They made a big movie distribution deal in 2012, which will see theatrically released feature films from Disney appear on Netflix starting in 2016. Netflix will be the exclusive U.S. subscription TV service for first run movies from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Disnynature, and Lucasfilm. The two companies also have a deal in Canada.

Suffice it to say that there is a lot of Netflix in Disney’s future.

Disney didn’t bring up Netflix in its earnings report, but was asked about it by analysts on the earnings call. Iger had this to say about the companies’ relationship:

Netflix, we’re growing our business with Netflix, first of all because we believe in their platform and its future. And we have from the beginning, when we did the output deal with the studio and we also believe that our brands can be well monetized on their platform, which is evidenced what they are paying for our brands and our content. So as long as that continues, which I think it will, not just domestically but internationally our business is expected to be robust with them or even grow. So it’s a good combination. We’ve got brands and content that they want and they have a platform that we like and that we want and they are willing to pay the right price for our content, good prices for our content. I think it’s mutually beneficial.

    CFO Jay Rasulo added:

I’m not going to put shadow what revenue we’ll come off with Netflix in the future but everything that Bob says I believe applies to every market that Netflix would enter in the future.

Netflix is, of course, already offering streaming customers some Disney titles. It even exclusively got the final season of Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Clone Wars . In the coming years, however, Disney’s presence is going to be felt much more on the service.

  • Kaley Cuoco and ‘TBBT’ Co-Stars Sign Big Contracts

    Bazinga!

When The Big Bang Theory first aired on CBS in 2007, no one would have guessed the show would be such a success. The show featured relatively unknown or has-been actors and rested upon a trite premise of nerds and geeks trying to exist in the real world. However, riding the waves of success created by How I Met Your Mother, witty writing, and surprisingly good acting, The Big Bang Theory finds itself gearing up for Season 8, with two more seasons already signed.

Shooting for Season 8 has been delayed, though, as producers and executives were waiting for the triumvirate of Kaley Cuoco (Penny), John Galecki (Leonard Hofstadter), and Jim Parsons (Sheldon Cooper) to come to terms with their new contracts. And boy – was the wait ever worth it.

Deadline has reported that the comedic trio has inked deals of epic proportions. While Cuoco and company were never making chump change – depositing $350,000 in their bank accounts for each episode aired, the trio has tripled their earnings through the next three seasons.

That is not a typo, folks. Cuoco, Galecki, and Parsons will each make $1 million per episode for the next three seasons – and that’s before one accounts for all of the bonuses and incentives arranged for in the contracts as well. While the trio is guaranteed $72 million over the next three seasons, that number could go as high as $90 million total with everything included.

The new contract for the three Big Bang Theory stars resembles the final contracts signed by the cast of Friends during its finals two seasons, with Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, and Matthew Perry each making $1 million per episode.

However, much time has passed since Friends went off the air in 2004, and the contracts of television stars have continued to soar. So, before you get all riled-up about how much money Cuoco, Galecki, and Parsons are making for approximately 23 minutes of airtime, think about this: The highest paid television star is Judge Judy, who makes a whopping $47 million per year.

Makes you a little sick, doesn’t it?

The Killing: The Final Season Is Now On Netflix

Well, The Killing is now officially over, as Netflix just released the final season. As soon as you can get through six episodes of the show, which shouldn’t take long for fans, it’s time to call it a day.

The show was promising when AMC first put it out, but people seemed to lose interest as it went on. Netflix was good enough to bring it back to give it a proper conclusion, so fans can an enjoy a complete series on its service (okay, yeah, there’s value in that for the company too).

“It all comes down to this: the fourth and final season of the critically acclaimed crime thriller is a six-episode Netflix original that wraps up loose ends and reveals long-buried secrets,” Netflix says. “Detectives Linden and Holder return to investigate a gruesome mass slaying that exposes a dark family history, while trying to cover up a crime they committed.”

    Here’s the trailer:

The episode titles are: Blood in the Water, Unraveling, The Good Soldier, Dream Baby Dream, Truth Asunder, and Eden.

Earlier this week, Netflix shared this behind-the-scenes look at the season.

  • Kirstie Alley’s Show Cancelled After One Season

Kirstie Alley’s attempt to make a comeback to the small screen was apparently unsuccessful.

According to Deadline, Alley’s new sitcom Kirstie has been cancelled by TV Land after only one season.

Everyone expected the show to be an instant hit with its lineup of actors. However, the ratings did not meet up with expectations and TV Land made the decision not to renew Kirstie for a second season. “It’s pretty much the dream team,” Alley previously said of her cast, which included Michael Richards and her former Cheers costar Rhea Perlman. “When we got who we wanted, it was sort of shocking. It shocked even me.”

The sitcom starred Alley as Maddie Banks, a Broadway star that gave up her son for adoption 26 years ago. The show followed Banks as her life was turned upside down by her son returning to reconnect with her. Perlman played the part of Banks’ personal assistant and best friend, Thelma Katz.

Alley and Perlman have remained friends since their days on Cheers and Perlman said she was excited when Alley asked her to co-star on her new show. “We did a lot of physical stuff this year, we got a little bit of the Lucy-Ethel thing going on as well, which is very wacky — that’s quite different from Cheers and a lot of fun to play,” Perlman said.

The pilot episode aired in December, and the final episode wrapped up in February.

  • Keifer Sutherland Said To Be Hard To Work With

Actor Freddie Prinze, Jr. told ABC News that working alongside 24 star Keifer Sutherland made him want to quit acting altogether.

Prinze played a character named Cole Ortiz on the eighth season of the hit Fox drama, and commented, “it was terrible. I hated every moment of it.” The late-90’s teen idol Prinze went on to say, “Kiefer was the most unprofessional dude in the world. That’s not me talking trash, I’d say it to his face, I think everyone that’s worked with him has said that.”

Prinze, who was at the San Diego Comic-Con earlier this month while promoting his new Disney XD series Star Wars Rebels, added, “I just wanted to quit the business after that. So, I just sort of stopped.” Aside from a couple of small parts on shows including Psych and Bones, Prinze has been working as a director and producer for the WWE professional wrestling network, and has been raising a son and a daughter with wife Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Sutherland, on the other hand, had nice things to say about Prinze. Commenting on season eight of 24, Sutherland told Parade magazine, “We have some great actors joining us – Mykelti Williamson is the head of CTU, Freddie Prinze Jr. is playing my partner – So, it’s this great balance between something that’s new and what fans will find familiar.”

Here Sutherland appears with Wil Wheaton in Stand By Me from 1986:

Prinze goes on to attack Sutherland’s height – “I went and worked for Vince McMahon at the WWE for Christ’s sake and it was a crazier job than working with Kiefer. But, at least he was cool and tall. I didn’t have to take my shoes off to do scenes with him, which they made me do. Just put the guy on an apple box or don’t hire me next time. You know I’m 6 feet and he’s 5’4.”

Sutherland, who ranked at number 68 on the 2006 Forbes “Celebrity 100” list of the world’s most powerful stars, made $23 million that year. Sutherland’s rep issued a statement on Prinze’s comments – “Kiefer worked with Freddie Prinze, Jr. more than 5 years ago, and this is the first he has heard of Freddie‘s grievances. Kiefer enjoyed working with Freddie and wishes him the best.”

A FOX executive added, “Kiefer was nothing but professional during the run of the show and is beloved by cast and crew. It’s so out of left field, 5 years later. We wouldn’t have done another 24 if Kiefer were anything like Freddie described.”
