  • Nielsen To Start Measuring Netflix, Amazon [Report]

Nielsen To Start Measuring Netflix, Amazon [Report]

Nielsen will soon start measuring viewing on Netflix and other streaming services, according to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, which claims to have reviewed Nielsen client documents.

This, according to the report, will begin as soon as next month, and will also include Amazon Prime Instant Video. Nielsen will reportedly analyze audio components to identify what content is being streamed, but it won’t account for mobile streaming as the technology won’t work on that yet, it says.

The report also includes a quote from Nielsen SVP Brian Fhurer: “Our clients will be able to look at their programs and understand: Is putting content on Netflix impacting the viewership on linear and traditional VOD ?”

The streaming content providers aren’t commenting.

It’s going to be quite interesting to see what the numbers look like once that data becomes available, as all anyone has really had to go on in the past is whatever data companies like Netflix felt like sharing.

The data could have a direct impact on the deals that are made between Netflix/Amazon and content creators and licenses.

Of course, without mobile, the picture will still be far from complete, and it’s unclear whether tablet viewing falls into the mobile category. If so, that will be a very significant chunk of missing data.

  • The Cast Of ‘The League’ Did A Google Talk

Google hosts a lot of interesting speakers for its “Talks at Google” events. Sometimes, they’re really scientific or technological. Other times, they’re just fun. You can decide for yourself which category this one falls into.

Last month, Google hosted some of the cast from FX’s The League, including Stephen Rannazzisi, Mark Duplass, Katie Aselton, and Jason Mantzoukas, which Google recently shared. It’s one of the few Google Talks that comes with the following disclaimer: “Warning – some content may not be appropriate for younger viewers.”

  • Laura Ingalls Wilder Autobiography Due Monday

Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the Little House series of short stories that loosely inspired plotlines of the popular television series Little House on the Prairie, will have her memoirs posthumously published Monday.

The South Dakota State Historical Society Press is releasing Prairie Girl: The Annotated Autobiography, which Wilder unsuccessfully tried to have published before the Little House on the Prairie NBC series debuted in 1974.

The television hit starring Michael Landon was based off of Wilder’s series of Little House children’s books, though the autobiography takes a more adult-oriented tone.

Prairie Girl: The Annotated Autobiography, which was edited by Pamela Smith Hill, contains accounts that inspired Wilder’s more personal writing. It includes annotations, images, appendices and maps that describe the hardships of frontier living. The tales include forthright accounts of domestic abuse, love triangles gone wrong and a man who lit himself afire while intoxicated.

Fans of ABC’s cult hit LOST might realize that all rogues, cads, hapless knaves and men without scruples are naturally captivated by the life-lessons that can be gleaned from watching reruns of Little House:

Actress Melissa Gilbert played Wilder on Little House on the Prairie, which ran from 1974 to 1984. The series, which was set in Walnut Grove, Minnesota, explored a myriad of social intricacies. Alcoholism, racism, adoption, drug addiction, cancer, rape and blindness were exhibited during the decade-long run of the show.

    Here is a clip:

Wilder, 1867-1957, got her start in writing after being invited to submit an article to the Missouri Ruralist in 1911, which led to a permanent position as a writer and editor with that publication.

The Stock Market Crash of 1929 decimated Wilder’s savings, though she and her husband still had the deed a 200 acre farm they couldn’t realistically afford to maintain. In hopes of generating more income, Wilder began writing her Little House series, with encouragement from her daughter Rose.

The book is priced at $39.95, and will be available in bookstores, online and directly from the South Dakota State Historical Society Press.

  • Amazon Won’t Charge Prime Members For Ultra HD

Amazon Won’t Charge Prime Members For Ultra HD

Amazon confirmed this week that it will not charge Prime members for Ultra HD content.

Earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show, Amazon announced it would make Ultra HD content available this year. The company sent us this statement from Michael Paull, VP of Amazon Digital Video:

“We want to be the best entertainment destination for customers. We’re confident that offering Ultra HD content, whether it’s a TV series or a film, will help create the ultimate viewing experience and can’t wait to start making it available this year. We’ve already announced that the Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga: Cheek To Cheek LIVE! concert will be available in the premium resolution as well as Amazon Original Series including Transparent, Alpha House and the upcoming Mozart in the Jungle series, and we’re excited to unveil even more titles that Prime members and customers can watch in Ultra HD later this year and into next year. Amazon Prime members will have access to a great selection of Ultra HD content on Prime Instant Video at no additional cost.”

“Customers are excited about the future of 4K and the next evolution of high resolution video. We’re working with consumer electronics leaders and Hollywood studios to make that a reality,” said Bill Carr, Vice President of Digital Video and Music for Amazon in January. “There are a number of elements that need to work together to create a true 4K experience for customers—you need great content and compatible devices but you also need a service that can deliver that content to your devices so that it plays beautifully—we’re excited about making that a reality.”

At the time, Amazon had announced partnerships with Samsung, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, and others to offer 4K Ultra HD content.

Rival Netflix also announced this year that its originals would all be available in 4K. It has since made Breaking Bad available in Ultra HD as well.

Beyond its contribution to Ultra HD content, Amazon’s news represents part of its strategy to give Prime members more and more features. At some point, it’s going to be hard for many consumers to justify not becoming a member.

This week, Amazon also announced its first set of pilots for 2015.

  • ‘Too Many Cooks’ Reminds Us That Facebook Is Really Slow At Rolling Out Graph Search Features

A lot of people are talking about “Too Many Cooks“. Maybe you’ve heard. It’s been trending on Twitter all weekend and throughout Monday.

If you’re on Twitter, you can easily see what people are saying about it, from people you follow and celebrities to the common folk of the Twitterverse. A lot has been said, and some fun content is being created around it.

I’m sure there will be plenty more, but Twitter is going to continue to be a lot better place to search for what people are saying and sharing about Too Many Cooks than Facebook, because Facebook still hasn’t rolled out Graph Search for posts, despite having announced it in September of last year.

While they said it would be a slow roll-out, this is ridiculous. With Graph Search, you should be able to search for “posts about Too Many Cooks” or “Posts about Too Many Cooks by my friends” or things of that nature.

Unfortunately, for most users, they still get something like this when they try such a query:

Facebook is notorious for announcing product updates, and taking FOREVER to roll them out, if they do at all. In the case of Graph Search, one would think it would be a higher priority at the company considering it’s another ideal place to put ads.

The company may not want to spoil the broth around privacy concerns, as the feature will potentially surface a lot of content that would otherwise be buried. It did say it would be taking feedback from the small amount of users it gave it to at the beginning. Unfortunately, we can only speculate as to what Facebook is doing with it.

In August, Facebook was found to be letting more people search posts from mobile devices, “testing” a feature it announced nearly a year prior.

Too Many Cooks is a perfect example of when people want to know what their friends are saying about it, and the fact that I can’t do this on Facebook right now is just a reminder that Facebook is really just lagging on this. It also implies that it could be a pretty huge feature once available.

  • Brooke Shields Talks Agassi’s Trophy Smashing Fit

In her soon to be released memoir There Was a Little Girl: The Real Story of My Mother and Me, actress Brooke Shields writes about her failed marriage to tennis icon Andre Agassi, and alleges he has a jealousy complex.

Shields, 49, goes on the mention an instance in which Agassi, 44, smashed his Wimbledon trophy after the actress made an appearance on the sitcom Friends. Shields played an obsessed fan of Matt LeBlanc’s character “Joey,” and licked his hand in one scene. Agassi, who was on set in Los Angeles during the time the scene was being filmed, did not take too kindly to it, and took off in his car and drove to Las Vegas, before going into a trophy smashing fury.

“Upon arrival he systematically smashed and destroyed every single trophy he had won, including Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, never mind all the others,” Shields recalled. The actress added that Agassi had mentioned to her that she “made him look like a fool.”

Included in the rampage were Agassi’s 1992 Wimbledon and 1994 U.S. Open trophies.

Here Shields’ “Erica” licks LeBlanc’s hand:

Here is Agassi displaying advanced tennis fashion:

Agassi, widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players in history, went on to win six more Grand Slams, including another U.S. Open in 1999, though broke his only Wimbledon trophy he would ever receive.

Shields and Agassi got married in 1997, but were divorced in 1999.

Shields made headlines in 2005, after relating her struggles with postpartum depression to Oprah Winfrey, and how seeing a psychiatrist helped her through her struggle. High-ranking Scientological master Tom Cruise promptly chimed in on The Today Show to school Matt Lauer on the entire history of useless psychiatry, and calls the host “glib.”

    Never gets old:

Shields, who has two daughters with husband Chris Henchy, was most recently seen on The Michael J. Fox Show, and is the spokesperson for Tupperware’s Chain of Confidence SMART Girls initiative, a program that teaches girls to nurture their mental and physical well-being.

  • Olivia Munn Offers Relationship Advice

    Olivia Munn Offers Relationship Advice

Former G4 Network Attack of the Show! co-host Olivia Munn revealed to E! News how she makes her relationship with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers work, during the final season premiere event of her hit HBO show The Newsroom.

While discussing the difficulties that arise while juggling busy schedules against a budding dalliance at a red carpet event held at the Directors Guild of America Theater, Munn commented, “You just end up making those concessions.” The Iron Man 2 actress added, “You make decisions because it can’t all be work and it can’t all be your personal life, especially when you’ve worked so hard to have a career.”

On the Golden Globe-nominated political drama The Newsroom, Munn plays Sloan Sabbith, a socially inept double PhD economist.

Here is a clip of Munn making nerds look good, on the Aaron Sorkin-helmed series:

Regarding her and Rodgers’ hectic schedules, Munn remarked, “There’s a lot of traveling, a lot of driving, and then you’re just really happy with the decisions that you make. And for me, it comes at a time in my life when I end up having to say no to some work because I gotta be somewhere else.”

“It doesn’t make me sad or anything, because I want my life to be full and have all those experiences, so you kind of figure it out as you go,” the actress added.

At the Tuesday event, Munn wore a “special ring” that Rodgers had given her after six months of dating. The actress commented, “This is a gift from my boyfriend, actually. I wore this for a premiere, and he had heard me talking to my stylist about being obsessed with it. It is such a special ring, and then he surprised me.”

“It’s not that kind of ring, by the way. It’s not the special ring. I mean, it’s a very special ring, but it is not the special ring,” she said.

  • Lemony Snicket’s ‘A Series Of Unfortunate Events’ Is Becoming A Netflix Original Series

Lemony Snicket’s ‘A Series Of Unfortunate Events’ Is Becoming A Netflix Original Series

Netflix is reportedly adapting Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events for an original series.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the title, it’s a series of thirteen children’s novels written by Daniel Handler, who uses the pen name Lemony Snicket. It was turned into a movie starring Jim Carrey, Meryl Streep, and Jude Law, which was released in 2004.

Netflix has acquired the rights to the series, and is getting Paramount (which produced the film) to co-produce it. The Wrap shares a quote from Netflix VP of Original Content Cindy Holland:

On the search for fantastic material that appeals to both parents and kids, the first stop for generations of readers is A Series of Unfortunate Events. We are proud to start work on a series for a global audience that already loves the books. The world created by Lemony Snicket is unique, darkly funny, and relatable. We can’t wait to bring it to life for Netflix members.

The Hollywood Reporter shares one from Snicket:

“I can’t believe it,” Snicket said from an undisclosed location. “After years of providing top-quality entertainment on demand, Netflix is risking its reputation and its success by associating itself with my dismaying and upsetting books.”

Netflix has always been good about basing content on built-in audiences. It’s basically the strategy the company has used since House of Cards. It’s also why its upcoming Marvel series additions are a no-brainer.

Keeping tune with the dance-crazed taste of its lead character, the humor of ALL HAIL KING JULIEN is backed by a pulse-pounding original score that includes a brand-new, infectiously upbeat theme song. • ‘Arrested Development’ To Get Another Season…4 [Netflix Originals]

‘Arrested Development’ To Get Another Season…4 [Netflix Originals]

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything new about Arrested Development, which as of Season 4, is considered a Netflix Original.

Last we heard, a Season 5 was “definitely” in the cards. Will Arnett, who plays GOB on the show, confirmed this on The Tonight Show a couple months ago after Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos was quoted as saying he was “positive” another season was coming.

“The truth is that the guy who is the big boss man at Netflix – he announced this…it’s gonna happen,” Arnett said. “We don’t know when, but it is gonna happen.”

Things have been pretty quiet on the Arrested front lately, but now creator Mitch Hurwitz has provided some news. Unfortunately it’s not about Season 5 or the long-anticipated movie, but about Season 4. He’s re-cutting it. He told Pretentious Film Majors (via Uproxx):

“Right now, I’m cutting a version of season four that tells it chronologically.”

It’s unclear if the re-edited version would appear on Netflix or become available by DVD or some other means.

As you may know, Season 4 was constructed in an entirely different way than previous seasons, which might be part of the reason it wasn’t quite as well received as the others. While many still found it enjoyable, few would probably rank it as the best season. It could be interesting to see how it plays in the more traditional format.

  • Hulu Announces Original Series From Jason Reitman

Hulu Announces Original Series From Jason Reitman

Hulu announced that it’s adding a new original series to its slate. It’s called Casual, and comes from Oscar-nominated director Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air).

The show is described as a ten-episode, single-camera, half-hour comedy, which follows a dysfunctional family with a bachelor brother and his newly-divorced sister. They coach each other through the “crazy world of dating (on-line and off)” while living together and raising a teenager.

Reitman will executive produce and direct the first episode along with writer Zander Lehmann and Helen Estabrook (Reitman’s production partner).

“Jason Reitman uniquely blends comedy and drama in a way that touches the human spirit. We are honored to work with him to bring the next distinctive voice, Zander Lehmann, to television,” said Craig Erwich, Senior Vice President and Head of Content at Hulu.

“I’ve long looked for the right first step into episodic storytelling,” said Reitman. “In Zander Lehmann, I have found the perfect collaborator. His writing is hilarious and provocative.”

Hulu is following the lead of its rivals like Netflix and Amazon in going after more and more original content. Last month, we learned that it greenlit 11/22/63, an original series based on the Stephen King book of the same name.

Casual will hit Hulu in 2015.
