  • Mobile Apps Are Becoming as Popular as TV

Mobile Apps Are Becoming as Popular as TV

According to mobile analytics company Flurry, you guys are buried in your devices – all the time. In fact, the time when mobile apps become the predominant form of media entertainment could be sooner rather than later.

According to Flurry, the amount of time U.S. consumers spent inside mobile apps in December 2012 beat the amount of time spent in December 2011 by a whopping 35% (127 minutes a day from 94 minutes a day). That mobile app usage cut into web usage a little bit (2%, year-over-year). They project that TV viewing stayed flat year-over-year.

If you’re wondering how Flurry obtained their TV viewing data:

“This time around, we add time spent on television using data released by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics for 2010 and 2011. Note that the bureau hasn’t yet released their 2012 numbers, but given the maturity of the TV market, we assume that time spent on TV is flat year-over-year.”

Assuming they’re correct, mobile app usage is gaining on TV – and fast. If the current trend continues, mobile app usage will likely run up on TV viewing by the end of 2013 or beginning of 2014.

“The chart also shows that time spent in apps already totals 76% of time spent on television. With new content released via thousands of new apps each day, we expect this trend to continue. In fact, we ultimately expect apps on tablets and smartphones to challenge broadcast television as the dominant channel for media consumption. Compared to the 60-year-old television industry, apps are just over 4 years old. In particular, tablets will drive growth in app consumption in 2013 as TV-style content and major programming moves to the tablet. Most TV Networks have already adjusted to a dual screen world and are synchronizing their TV content with their tablet app content. We believe that, with the introduction of connected TVs, TV shows will behave like apps,” says Flurry.

If you’re curious as to what Americans are doing with all that time spent using apps, 80% of the app use is defined as social networking and entertainment.

  • The Walking Dead Does Something No Other Cable Show Has Done In History

AMC announced today that The Walking Dead is the first cable television series in history that has achieved being the biggest show of the Fall season among the Adult 18-49 rating. The show beat out such broadcast hits as The Voice, Modern Family, X Factor, Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory and Grey’s Anatomy.

“Representing both the studio and the network as AMC does on this project, I speak for so many when I say ‘thank you’ and congratulations to everyone involved,” said AMC President Charlie Collier. The records that The Walking Dead shattered today represent an enormous achievement of which we are so proud.”

Sunday’s mid-season finale reached 10.5 million viewers during its premiere. When it encored an hour later, it attracted an additional 3.6 million. When it encored again, it reached another 1.1 million. In total, 15.2 million people watched it on TV that night.

Of course, those broadcast shows don’t have the benefit of such an encore schedule, but impressive nonetheless. Getting AMC back on Dish must have helped tremendously.

In a blog post, AMC says:

The Walking Dead Season 3 to date reigns as the number one ad supported drama series in basic cable history among total viewers, adults 18-49, adults 25-54, adults 18-34, men 18-49, men 25-54 and men 18-34. AMC resumes the final eight episodes of The Walking Dead Season 3 on Sun., Feb. 10 at 9/8c.

In addition, the Season 3 Midseason Finale of Talking Dead at 11PM attracted 2.2 million viewers. The live after show, hosted by Chris Hardwick, expands to a one-hour program on Sun., Feb. 10 at 10/9c immediately following The Walking Dead. Embassy Row’s Michael Davies and Jen Patton serve as executive producers and Brandon Monk is co-executive producer.

The show has over 12 and a half million Facebook likes, and is cable’s most mentioned show, based on Trendrr.tv data, according to AMC, who notes that it outranks WWE’s Monday Night Raw and ESPN’s Monday Night Football. That, too, is impressive.

For a look ahead at the second half of the season, which returns in February, check out these videos AMC put out.

  • American Horror Story On Netflix Now A Reality

Netflix announced today that American Horror Story is now available for streaming in the U.S. That would be the first season, of course.

“It’s Thanksgiving week, so what’s a blog post without giving thanks for certain things in your life?” writes Allie Goss, Director of Content Acquisition, on the Netflix blog. “I’m thankful for the typical: family, friends, good health, and my job (this is not because this is my employer’s blog, although I figure, it can’t hurt). I’m also thankful for the less essential, yet still appreciated things like new albums from The Killers and Mumford & Sons, seasonal gingerbread lattes, and incredible TV shows like American Horror Story, which is available today in the US!”

“We’re thrilled to bring our US subscribers FX’s hit show, American Horror Story!” she adds. “For those of you not familiar with the critically-acclaimed show, we know you’ll enjoy watching the Harmon family as they move from Boston to Los Angeles seeking relief from their messy pasts, only to find out that they have taken up residence in a house haunted by its former residents. Gripping and scary, this present-day story stars Dylan McDermott, Connie Britton, Taissa Farmiga, and many others including a performance by Jessica Lange as Constance Langdon, which earned her Golden Globe, SAG, and Emmy awards!”

The show joins other FX shows on the Netflix line-up, like The League, Sons Of Anarchy and Rescue Me.

The second season of American Horror Story is currently underway on FX. I would assume that that season will come to Netflix in about a year (maybe ahead of the start of the third season, if we’re lucky).

Goss also reminds us that Netflix original series House Of Cards will soon be available. It’s coming on February 1. Watch the trailer here.

  • Yahoo Comedy Channel Gets New Onion Show

Yahoo Comedy Channel Gets New Onion Show

Yahoo Screen has launched a new show on the Yahoo Comedy channel: The Onion’s Extremely Accurate History Of The Internet. The show is produced by Yahoo Studios and (of course) The Onion.

“The new this show is a comical satirical documentary that reveals the past of the world wide web,” a Yahoo spokesperson tells WebProNews.

    Here’s the official description:

The Internet finally gets some well deserved attention. “The Onion’s Extremely Accurate History of the Internet” will reveal the past of this vast and glorious data network, starting with the carved stone modems of our African ancestors, through the wifi enabled monks of Medieval Europe, to the porn-laden web of today.

The channel is also renewing four out of its original six shows (Burning Love, First Dates With Toby Harris, Odd Nes, and Sketchy). The shows will launch over the next several weeks, and will be programmed throughout the Yahoo network and on Yahoo Screen, the spokesperson says.

  • Google TV Gets Big Update With Voice Search, PrimeTime Guide

Google announced a new update for Google TV, which adds Voice Search, a revamped TV & Movies app called PrimeTime, and integrates YouTube mobile pairing.

“Instantly access the power of Google TV, simply by using your voice,” Google says in a blog post. “Just speak to watch TV shows and movies, start playing a YouTube video, open applications, go to websites, do a Google search, and much more. Say ‘CNN’ to go right to the channel, or say ‘Homeland’ to see all the live and streaming options to watch the show. You can even say ‘how to tie a bow tie’ to watch an instructional YouTube video. Try ‘search movies with Jeff Bridges’ and see results in our new, more visual search results page.”

“Last year your Google TV added the TV & Movies app to help you browse 100,000+ movies and TV episodes available to watch,” Google adds. “Now called PrimeTime, the app makes it even easier to find your favorite content. Easily access PrimeTime anywhere in Google TV and browse for something new while you watch. You can quickly flip through the best stuff on live TV, access your favorite channels, see TV shows you recently watched, and find other suggestions based on what you enjoy watching.”

We talked more about the YouTube mobile pairing feature yesterday.

The updates are coming first to LG devices this week, and will be rolling out to other devices in the coming months.

Google TV currently has six partners with products in ten countries. LG’s Google TV was rated the best Google TV device by Consumer Reports. Google TV currently offers over 100,000 movies and TV episodes.

  • Google Improves The YouTube/Google TV Experience

YouTube announced today that it is making it easier for users to enjoy YouTube on TV by automatically pairing their devices.

“With the updated YouTube app for Android and Google TV rolling out today, you can play any video from your phone or tablet YouTube app on your TV with just one button,” a YouTube spokesperson tells WebProNews. “The feature will be coming to more devices and screens in the future, as we work to make YouTube the platform for the next generation of channels.”

    YouTube - Send to TV

“We’re making it even easier to play videos from your phone or tablet on your TV, with a YouTube app update for Android and Google TV that automatically pairs your devices on the same WiFi,” explains product manager Timbo Drayson. “Just find a video on your YouTube app for Android — like the latest video from GoPro or H+ The Digital Series — click the TV icon that appears, and the video will play instantly on your Google TV.”

“Like a remote control, you can pause, scroll or skip to the next video with your mobile device as it plays on your TV,” Drayson adds. “Since your devices are connected in the cloud, you can also do things like find the next video to watch from your tablet or browse around the web on your phone, all while the video plays on TV. You can even connect multiple devices to the TV to have your friends add to the playlist.”

Mobile currently makes up over 25% of YouTube total views, and that percentage is growing. The peak viewership of YouTube occurs during the evening primetime hours. That should bode well for YouTube’s emphasis on original content. Word is that they’re increasing their investment in this area. More on that here.

  • Hulu And CBS Enter Partnership To Bring CBS Shows To Hulu Plus

Hulu And CBS Enter Partnership To Bring CBS Shows To Hulu Plus

Hulu announced today that it has entered into a multi-year licensing agreement with CBS, which will see the network’s library of TV programming become available on Hulu Plus in January.

Users will gain access to over 2,600 episodes of shows like Medium, Numb3rs, CSI Miami, Star Trek, I Love Lucy, The Twilight Zone, etc.

“We remain ever-focused on building a differentiated and high-value service for our customers (users, content owners and advertisers) and are proud that we have built Hulu Plus to be the only online video service to offer this type of TV content selection,” said Hulu SVP of Content, Andy Forssell.

People will also be able to watch episodes of Entertainment Tonight on Hulu and Hulu Plus the same day they’re broadcast on television, starting today. Select other shows will rotate through the free Hulu.com.

The partnership will reportedly not give Hulu access to other new shows as they air, but the addition of CBS content is still significant for the service, which has already been offering ABC, FOX and NBC content (Hulu is a joint venture among these three providers).

  • Sons Of Anarchy Season 4 Hits Netflix Instant

Sons Of Anarchy Season 4 has finally made its way to Netflix Instant for your streaming pleasure (in the U.S.). This might have been more useful a couple months ago, as Season 5 premiered on September 11th, but better late than never.

In a post on its official blog, Netflix Director of Content Acquisition, Allie Goss, writes:

We first brought you Season 1 in 2011, introducing Jax and the rest of SAMCRO (Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club Redwood Original) crew to Netflix in this Hamlet-influenced drama (yes, that’s Shakespeare’s Hamlet). Since then, existing fans have been reliving the drama by watching their favorite episodes, while others are discovering the motorcycle-outlaw adventure for the first time, catching up on Season 1, Season 2, and Season 3. Whichever group you fall into, we’re glad you’re enjoying the ride!

All 14 episodes from the fourth season are now available to stream. Of course, seasons 1-3 are still available as well, so fans old and new will have hours of SOA to indulge in at their convenience.

Netflix revealed last week that it had 25.1 million domestic streaming members in Q3 (20% more than it had the year before).

  • G4 Canceling All Of Its Gaming Programming, Including X-Play And Attack Of The Show

G4, and Tech TV before it, was the one-stop destination for many gamers looking to find something even remotely relevant to their interests on television. The quality had gone downhill over the years, but at least X-Play and Attack of the Show were around to keep things interesting. Hopes of a resurgence were squashed earlier this year when the two major names from both shows – Adam Sessler and Kevin Pereira – left the network. Now it looks like G4 is ready to kill off the whole thing.

Citing sources close to the matter, Kotaku is reporting that G4 will be killing off X-Play and Attack of the Show today. The network will also be killing off the rest of the gaming programming that G4 still dabbled in. We can assume that means the networks extensive live coverage of E3 and Comic-Con will be no more.

The source continues to say that the higher-ups at G4 will be holding meetings with staff later today to inform them of their fate. They will also detail the future of the network going forward. What kind of future? The source says that G4 will be transformed into a lifestyle network focused on “the modern male” – whatever that means.

A report from TV Guide confirms the cancelations and says that both shows will end later this year. Until then, they will air a number of farewell episodes over the next two months. Most of it will apparently be the network lazily rebroadcasting important moments in the history of both shows.

As expected, the news has already spread throughout the Twitterverse with many gamers, nerds and former G4 hosts looking back on a network that used to provide a much needed voice for a subset of culture that’s ignored, or outright ridiculed, by the rest of mainstream media.

  • Axl Rose Talks Twitter With Jimmy Kimmel, Once Dressed As Ear Of Corn For Halloween

Axl Rose of legendary rock band Guns N’ Roses made a rare television appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. According to Entertainment Weekly, this was his first live TV interview in over 20 years.

At one point, Kimmel brought up the official Guns N’ Roses Twitter page.

“We have one of those?” Rose joked.

“I had a feeling you weren’t very involved in the tweeting,” said Kimmel.

“No, sometimes, yes I am,” he responded, as the discussion turned to fans asking questions through Twitter, which quickly turned to Kimmel asking questions from fans for him to answer right there on set.

The entire interview has been made available on the Jimmy Kimmel Live YouTube channel:

Rose also mentioned that he once dressed up as a giant ear of corn for Halloween. We imagine it looked something like a cross between these two images:

Perhaps one year, he’ll take on the Tootsie Roll costume.

  • Walking Dead Back, Dish Network Customers Rejoice

As previously reported, AMC and Dish Network have finally settled litigation, and reached a deal to get the channel back on Dish for its many customers. Since the satellite provider lost the channel, there have been numerous angry customers, and the whole thing undoubtedly caused many to leave the service.

Fans of shows like The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, etc., who stuck around, can breathe a sigh of relief. The Walking Dead, of course, just launched its third season this month, and the deal was done in time for Dish to get the second episode, which premiered on Sunday night. AMC had offered the first episode to Dish customers online, free of charge.

Figuring out where and/or how to watch The Walking Dead will no longer be an issue for Dish customers, as the companies have agreed to a long-term deal.

You can feel the excitement radiating from Twitter:

Of course, some are still bitter:

  • Dish Network Finally Has AMC Again

Dish Network and AMC have finally worked out a deal that once again makes the channel available to Dish subscribers. Cablevision Systems Corporation and AMC Networks announced on Sunday that they have settled litigation with Dish Network, filed in the New York Supreme Court and related to VOOM HD.

Dish has agreed to pay a cash settlement of $700 million to Cablevision and AMC. $80 million of that is for licensing Cablevision’s multichannel video and data distribution service (MVDDS) in 45 areas in the U.S. Dish has entered into a long-term distribution agreement with AMC to carry AMC, IFC, Sundance Channel and WE tv, and with The Madison Square Garden Company to carry Fuse. Dish, meanwhile, conveys its 20-percent membership interest in VOOM HD to Rainbow Programming. All of the cash settlement remains with Cablevision and AMC Networks.

“We are glad to have settled the case and reestablished our long-term relationships with AMC Networks and Cablevision,” said Dave Shull, senior vice president of Programming at Dish. “This multi-year deal delivers a fair value for both parties and includes digital expansion opportunities for AMC Networks’ programming.”

AMC CEO Josh Sapan said, “We are glad to partner again with Dish Network and are delighted to bring back our popular channels and programming to their customers.”

Dish resumed broadcast of AMC on Sunday. It can be found on channel 131.

This is good news for fans of shows like The Waking Dead (which just aired the second episode of its new season), Breaking Bad (which just has the second part of its final season left) and Mad Men, to name a few.

  • Jennifer Esposito Calls Out CBS On Twitter

Jennifer Esposito is being written out of the cast of the CBS show Blue Bloods after appearing in 42 episodes. As one might imagine, she’s not too thrilled with this news, and has taken to Twitter to call out CBS.

Esposito suffers from Celiac Disease, a digestive disease that interferes with the way one gets their nutriets from food. It damages the small intestines from an immune response to gluten. Esposito actually operates the Jennifer’s Way Foundation, designed to educate and raise awareness about the disease. She’s been dealing with it for years, throughout her acting career.

In a story she shares on the JennifersWay.org site, she writes, “In spite of all this though, I had managed to become a self made, hard working, award winning actress. Almost 15 years as a working actress in a god forsaken, takes no prisoners business that would make the strongest man crumble. Worked hard and managed to own my own home by the age of 25. And at this point of my life I was a friend, an aunt, a godmother, a sister and a self respecting 35-year-old women. I had traveled to foreign countries alone. I have had good relationships and bad. Cried, learned from mistakes, got back up. I’ve never fallen in to the evils of ‘Hollywood’ – never had an eating disorder, I worked out to stay healthy, and never took a drug in my life. I learned to meditate and developed a strong spiritual center. I’ve been at my lowest and knew to count my blessings for what was, rather than for what was not.”

Now, she appears to be dealing with some familiar “evils,” as CBS has written her out of the show, following a reported collapse on set. She has taken to Twitter to call out the network, which maintains that since she is only available to work on a “very limited part-time schedule,” she is “unable to perform the demands of her role,” and that they needed to put her character on a “leave of absence.” The network says it hopes she will be able to return at some point in the future.

Here is what Esposito has been saying (in addition to numerous retweets from her supporters):

    The New York Post reports:

Sources tell us that Jennifer collapsed on the set in August, complaining that producers were “working her too hard…”

One source said, “She said she was being worked too hard and was escorted to her trailer and filming was halted. The crew was forced to come back to finish the scene on a Saturday a few weeks later, and that was when Jennifer discovered from the script they were writing her off the show.”

The publication also shares a statement from Esposito’s lawyer, who said, “The suggestion that Ms. Esposito created a scene and was escorted to her trailer is a vicious falsehood.”

The outpour of support from fans on Twitter has been astounding, giving us one of the latest examples of how Twitter (and social media in general) are truly putting fans in connection with the celebrities they admire. Sometimes, this even leads to increased awareness for a cause. If nothing else, Esposito can likely take some amount of comfort in that aspect of the story.

  • The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 1: Behind The Scenes

If you’re here, you’re probably aware that The Walking Dead Season 3 is now underway. The first episode of the season premiered on Sunday. If you haven’t seen it yet, AMC is showing it on its website for a limited time. You should have a chance to get caught up before next Sunday.

“Chapter 2 lets fans battle walkers and fight for survival in downtown Atlanta alongside Glenn, Daryl and more characters from the show,” explains AMC in a blog post. “Just complete Chapter 1 — where you escape down the highway with Shane, Lori and Carl — to get to Chapter 2.”

Updates to the game, based on feedback, include:

    • Wide screen and full screen modes for a richer game experience.
    • Energy is no longer needed for moving and fighting.
    • Upgraded weapons, with greater abilities, accuracy and range
    • Intel and morale are no longer required to play missions.
