  • The Big Bang Theory Wins Big At Critics Choice TV Awards

The Big Bang Theory has proven to be very popular among TV watchers. It must be unsurprising then to see the TV critics agree.

Reuters reports that The Big Bang Theory walked away with the best comedy award at the Critics Choice TV awards Monday evening. The sitcom beat out other strong comedies for the award, including Parks and Recreation, Louis and New Girl. The Big Bang Theory co-stars Kaley Cuoco and Simon Helberg also walked away with best supporting actor in comedy awards.

The Big Bang Theory did not walk away with all the comedy awards though. Louis C.K. won the award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Louis. Best Actress in a Comedy Series went to Julia Louis-Dreyfus for her starring role in HBO’s Veep.

Moving from comedy, Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad tied for the Best Drama award. Breaking Bad lead Bryan Cranston came out with the Best Actor in a Drama Series award for the second year in a row. Best Actress in a Drama Series went to Tatiana Maslany of BBC America’s Orphan Black.

As for best movie or mini-series, HBO’s Behind the Candelabra walked away the top honor. The film’s leading star – Michael Douglas – won Best Actor in a Movie or Mini-Series. Elisabeth Moss won Best Actress in a Movie or Mini-Series for her leading role in Top of the Lake.

  • House Of Cards Season 1 Hits DVD, Blu-Ray On Tuesday

The first season of Netflix original hit House of Cards hits DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday. Now people who aren’t subscribed to Netflix (and those who only subscribe to the DVD part of the service) will be able to watch the show that got so many people talking.

The DVD list price is $55.99, with Blu-ray running $65.99, though Amazon is offering them for $24.99 and $29.99 respectively.

The show, which stars Kevin Spacey, and was produced by David Fincher, was first released in February to rave reviews. It quickly became the most popular TV show on IMDB. The show got so big it was even spoofed at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Season 2 is currently in production. While little is known about the forthcoming season, it is filming in Maryland. This is the second Netflix original to get renewed for a second season. Filming has wrapped on the first one, Lilyhammer, though a release date for the season has yet to be announced.

Netflix’s follow-up to House of Cards, Hemlock Grove, has yet to be renewed, but fans are salivating in hopes that it will happen, and the latest – Arrested Development – has had the web buzzing since its release last month.

Last week, Netflix debuted the trailers for its upcoming series Orange is the New Black and a stand-up special from comedian John Hodgman.

  • Amy Poehler Dating “Parks & Rec” Co-Star

Amy Poehler, who announced her separation from actor-husband Will Arnett last September, is officially dating her “Parks & Recreation” co-star Nick Kroll. The pair were spotted on Thursday at AFI’s 41st Life Achievement Award Gala, enjoying dinner.

“Things are going well,” a friend of the couple said. “They have a lot of fun together obviously and are both real big fans of each other.”

Kroll has a recurring role on Poehler’s show as a radio shock-jock named “The Douche”, and while the two of them haven’t had a whole lot of onscreen time together, they appear to be smitten.

Poehler, who was at the awards dinner to honor Mel Brooks, couldn’t help but take a crack at the iconic director.

“I’m so honored to be here tonight,” Poehler said onstage. “I’m one of the younger presenters of the evening, believe it or not. This is embarrassing to admit, but I thought we were honoring Mel B from the Spice Girls.”

  • Amanda Bynes: Would You Watch Her Reality Show?

Amanda Bynes is slowly melting down in a very public way, and so many people have started following her on Twitter lately that it’s become a sort of “I don’t want to watch this train wreck but I can’t help it” situation. Now, one celebrity says she thinks a reality show is in order.

“I just think she’s entertaining,” Jersey Shore star Snooki said recently. “And I think she needs a reality show because I would watch it all the time. If she needed help, I would wish that she would get it, obviously, but she’s entertaining. She’s my guilty pleasure on Twitter.”

But that’s the question: does she need help or are all the antics, topless Twit-pics and arrests just part of a genius ploy for media attention? Bynes, who “retired” from acting in her early 20’s and then made a brief comeback with “Easy A”, has moved from L.A. to New York in an attempt to follow her fashion career dreams, but so far all she’s done is grab headlines with her manic behavior, arrests for drug abuse, and odd court appearances.

Her latest outburst on Twitter including calling her dad “uglier than RuPaul” and saying she’d had a second nose job. It’s doubtful a reality show is in order rather than some counseling, but it doesn’t seem too far down the road at this point.

  • Arrested Development Season 5 Already Has Some Story Elements In Place

Now that Arrested Development has made its long-awaited return as a Netflix “semi-original,” fans are wondering if they’ll get more. After all, wouldn’t it be cruel to bring it back for just one season after all those years of not having it?

We’ve seen mixed comments on the prospect of another season from Netflix. Back in February, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said that the current season would be “a one off” and a “non-repeatable” event, leading the Wall Street Journal to report that there would be “no subsequent seasons”.

But that was months before Season 4 was even released. Things are seeming a great deal more optimistic these days.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos said, “We would love to do more, and we have a deal in place that says that there could be. The problem is logistics. They (the actors) were all working full-time and doing this show in between, and they did it for the love of the show and for Mitch Hurwitz. If we can muster up that love again, we’d love to do it again. And we have talked openly about a movie scenario, too.”

This week, TV Guide put out an interview with Hurwitz (the show’s creator), in which he revealed that he’s already been setting the stage for a future season (kind of).

“There’s a lot in this show that not only refers to later episodes but that also refer to a future story,” he said. “A lot of what we were doing was setting up a future for this world. I would put the ostriches in that camp.”

When asked if that means another batch of episodes is to come, Hurwitz said, “It was important to me that I had a story behind this one that we built to. Whether that ever becomes a feature or a puppet show or a graphic novel or a needlepoint pattern, I’m not sure. A lot of things [this season] make sense when you rewatch it. Then there are other things that are just set up for something in the future. And then there are other things that are probably just bad writing.”

When asked directly if he would be able to do another season, he said, “I would want to do it again, definitely. It just requires some logistics. I’m sure that could be worked out.”

    That sounds pretty promising.

And even if, for some reason, Netflix didn’t want to get behind another season, Arrested Development could have other options. As the TV Guide interview reminds us, Showtime also attempted to pick up the fourth season of the series.

  • Pandora Unveils New Television Experience

    Pandora Unveils New Television Experience

Pandora says it has already had ten million people using Pandora on Internet-connected televisions, and now they’re launching a new browser-based television experience at tv.pandora.com. The product is a complete overhaul of the TV version of Pandora people are used to.

“This is an entirely new experience designed from the ground up for your television and remote control,” says Tom Conrad, CTO and EVP of Product at Pandora. “This new initiative is standards-based and embraces next generation TV, game console, and set top box architectures that support open web standards.”

The experience currently runs from the browser on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, and it will spread to other platforms in the coming months.

“It’s also a completely new approach which will allow us to evolve the ’10 foot’ experience of Pandora with greater flexibility and speed than ever before,” says Conrad. “We’re still in the early stages of a transition to a world where all of the devices we interact with throughout the day – our TV’s, our stereos, our refrigerators, our cars, our watches, our eyeglasses — are all connected to the internet. This then begs the questions: how will developers create applications for this incredibly diverse set of devices? We think the answer can be web standards. The world doesn’t need more proprietary platforms fragmenting the innovative efforts of developers everywhere.”

A few months ago, Pandora surpassed 200 million users, and has since been adding features to make its service more appealing in the increasingly competitive online music space. Last month, Pandora premiered a feature that lets you listen to music on demand before it’s actually released. The company also launched new Facebook integration to help Facebook users populate the Music section of their profiles.

  • Hemlock Grove Season 2 Still Up In The Air, According To Netflix

Update2 : It’s happening. Netflix has made it official.

Update: Netflix hints that season 2 likely (kind of).

Last month, we reported that while a second season for Hemlock Grove had yet to be announced, one was “highly likely”. Now we’ve heard directly from Netflix that it’s still up in the air.

“We haven’t made any decisions on renewal for Hemlock Grove,” a Netflix spokesperson tells WebProNews.

We said a second season was likely for several reasons. For one, Netflix boasted that the show outperformed the critically acclaimed House of Cards in the shows’ premiere weekends. House of Cards Season 2 is currently filming.

The show is getting viewers, and more importantly, they want more. Despite mixed reviews, the show has an audience. Yahoo recently revealed that searches for “hemlock grove season 2 release date” were spiking, and we continue to get comments every day on our earlier coverage of the topic. They pretty much unanimously beg for more Hemlock Grove.

Another reason that a second season could be in the cards is because Brian McGreevy, who wrote the novel the series is based upon has indicated that he would be working on sequels to the novel, which would mean more material to draw from.

Lilyhammer, Netflix’s first original series recently finished up shooting for its second season. A release date for that is also undetermined at this point.

  • Lilyhammer Season 2 Release Date Unannounced, But Filming Has Been Done For A While

There’s been a lot of talk about Netflix’s various original shows lately. Earlier this year, Netflix debuted House of Cards to much buzz and critical acclaim. Then came Hemlock Grove. Though it didn’t get quite the critical acclaim of its predecessor, it has won the hearts of plenty of fans. Then about a week and a half ago, Netflix debuted the long-anticipated return of Arrested Development, which is billed as a Netflix original (or technically a “semi-original”).

Some might forget, however, that this whole Netflix original series thing kicked off with another show last year, called Lilyhammer. Others are probably wondering what’s going on with it.

So far, Netflix has been pretty quiet about the show’s return. “We have not announced a premiere date for Lilyhammer’s second season,” a spokesperson tells WebProNews. “The show is not filming any longer.”

Earlier reports indicated that a second season was indeed on the way. In fact, the official Bruce Springsteen website put out a statement in January indicating that Steven Van Zandt (Lilyhammer’s star) would have to miss some tour dates because of the show. The statement from January 16 said:

Since Stevie Van Zandt’s filming commitments to his highly successful television show Lilyhammer will keep him off stage for the upcoming Australian tour dates, Bruce Springsteen has invited Tom Morello to sit in temporarily on guitar. Following the Australian dates, Van Zandt will return to the tour in Oslo, Norway on April 29, 2013.

The band’s Australian dates ran from March 14th through March 31st.

A few days after that statement, Deadline indicated that Lilyhammer had added cast for season 2, and that the show was filming in Oslo and Lillehammer. Nancy Tartaglione wrote:

For its second outing, the fish-out-of-water dramedy has added Paul Kaye (Game Of Thrones), Erik Madsen (Da Vinci’s Demons), Amy Beth Hayes (Mr Selfridge) and Jakob Oftebro (from foreign-language film Oscar nominee Kon-Tiki)….Season 2 sees van Zandt’s mob fixer Frank Tagliano still in witness protection and juggling fatherhood with running his criminal operation. Added to the mix this season are a group of English soccer hooligans, a bank robbery that threatens to reveal Frank’s identity, and a bloodthirsty new female sheriff.

So while we don’t know exactly when the show will return, it’s obviously at least in the post-production stage, and we can probably expect an announcement in the not too distant future.

  • Netflix Just Put Out This Arrested Development Behind-The-Scenes Video

Arrested Development let a few lucky fans win walk-on roles in the latest season of the show, which just returned via Netflix about a week and a half ago after years of missing in action. Netflix has now uploaded a behind-the-scenes video from the show highlighting some of the walk-ons’ stories.

  • Charice Pempengco, “Glee” Actress, Comes Out

Charice Pempengco, “Glee” Actress, Comes Out

Coming out is a big, big deal for anyone in the LGBT community, but when you’re in the public eye, it can be made a thousand times more difficult. Now, following in the footsteps of fellow television actors Jim Parsons and Neil Patrick Harris, “Glee” actress Charice Pempengco has spoken out about her sexuality.

Making the decision to come out even more daunting was the fact that she did it on a popular Filipino talk show in her native language.

“I have deep gratitude for the Filipinos because they are the ones who know who I really am. … I don’t know what the problem is because for me, there is no problem with that. So now I ask for forgiveness from those who don’t understand. And those who cannot accept. I apologize: I understand you,” she said. “To those who could accept, and who could accept me, thank you very, very much. I just want to say to all of you that I feel very light – that I can leave the house knowing I am not hiding anything.”

The 21-year old broke down in tears at one point, saying, “Now I feel free. I can go out of the house without fear and be certain that I’m not stepping on anybody’s toes.”

The news may not come as a surprise to those who have watched her rise to fame; after being discovered on the South Korean show “Star King” in 2007, she changed her look dramatically from dresses and makeup to a short hairstyle and laid-back clothing, prompting rumors that she was gay.

  • Portia De Rossi: Plastic Surgery, Or “Arrested” Joke?

Portia De Rossi, who plays self-absorbed Lindsay Bluth on “Arrested Development”, is getting quite a bit of attention lately for her looks.

The 40-year old actress hasn’t spoken publicly about whether or not she’s had work done, but since new episodes of the show have been brought back by Netflix, fans have taken to social media to talk about what appear to be significant changes to her face.

However, photos of De Rossi on the red carpet don’t seem to mesh with what we’re seeing on the show, so now the question is, did she really have surgery or is it just that she’s made up to look that way because that’s what Lindsay Bluth would have done? According to Jezebel, it’s a possibility:

“Lindsay’s plastic surgery is something that’s been repeatedly referenced on AD — it’s easy to imagine she’d get work done in the seven years since the show’s final Fox season, and It’s just the kind of subtle joke [creator] Mitch Hurwitz and co. would let go unmentioned.”

A fair point. But a “source” says something else is to blame for her altered appearance.

“She’s absolutely not had plastic surgery,” the source said. “Her character is clearly wearing a wig, which ended up altering her entire look.”

Take a look at the pics of De Rossi below and judge for yourself.

  • Amazon Greenlights First 5 Shows: Alpha House, Betas, Annebots, Creative Galaxy, Tumbleaf

In April, Amazon debuted 14 pilots for shows that could become its first originals. Five of them made the cut: Alpha House, Betas, Annebots, Creative Galaxy, and Tumbleaf. They will begin production, and air later this year, and in early 2014.

“We are thrilled at the enthusiastic customer response to our first original pilots,” said Roy Price, Director of Amazon Studios. “We built Amazon Studios so that customers could help decide which stories would make the very best movies and TV shows. It’s exciting to see the process in motion, doing exactly what we set out to do. The success of this first set of pilots has given us the push to try this approach with even more shows—this is just the beginning.”

Alpha House stars John Goodman, and was written by Academy Award nominee and Pulitzer-Prize winner Garry Trudeau and produced by Elliot Webb and Jonathan Alter. It’s a comedy about “four misfit senators turned unlikely roommates”.

Betas is a comedy set in Silicon Valley, following four friends as they try to get rich with a new mobile social networking app. It stars Ed Begley Jr., Jon Daly, Joe Dinicol, Charlie Saxton and Karan Soni, and is written by Evan Endicott and Josh Stoddard.

The other three are kids shows. Here are the official descriptions:

Annebots revolves around Anne, a young scientist, who creates three robot helpers to assist her scientific experiments in the back of her dad’s junkyard. This science-based series from creator J.J. Johnson aims to introduce kids to science and technology in a fun, new way.

Creative Galaxy is an animated interactive art adventure series, designed to inspire kids’ creative thinking through crafts, story, music and dance. The series was created by Angela Santomero, creator of Blue’s Clues and the Emmy-nominated literacy series, Super Why!

Tumbleaf was created by Drew Hodges and Kelli Bixler of Bix Pix Entertainment, the award-winning stop motion studio. The series, aimed at preschoolers, is set in a whimsical land where a small blue fox named Fig plays each day and discovers adventure, friendship and love around every bend. Children will be enriched by narratives that promote play through exploration and scientific thinking.

Each of the shows will appear exclusively on Prime Instant Video. The pilots are currently available for streaming.

  • ‘The Fall,’ Starring Gillian Anderson, Now Available On Netflix

Things are really starting to heat up with Netflix streaming. In the wake of the successful premieres of House of Cards and Hemlock Grove, Netlix has now debuted the long-anticipated return of Arrested Development, and will soon get the new season of The Killing.

Netflix has now also made available The Fall, the new crime show featuring Gillian Anderson of The X Files fame.

The show has done quite well in the UK, appearing on BBC2, and reportedly reaching about 3.5 million viewers a week since debuting earlier this month. The BBC announced that it is being renewed for a second season.

It’s not exactly a Netflix original, but it’s the latest example of Netflix getting more sought-after content to its streaming service, and quickly.

Season now available on Netflix in the U.S.

  • Arrested Development Cast Members Hang Out With Fellow Netflix Stars Kevin Spacey And Robin Wright

Arrested Development finally returned on Sunday as a Netflix semi-original series, and stars Will Arnett and Bateman have been hanging out getting some pictures taken with fellow Netflix stars Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright (House of Cards).

Spacey tweeted this photo out a few hours ago:

    Here’s a better look:

  • Moss Slams Piven For “Being Highly Unprofessional”

Elisabeth Moss slammed her former Broadway co-star Jeremy Piven over what she was “highly unprofessional” behavior.

During an appearance on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live, Moss spoke on her time working with Piven during the production of Speed-The-Plow. The official story is that Piven left the production after coming down with mercury poisoning from his predominantly fish-based diet. Moss says that it was just an excuse.

Moss says Piven didn’t look like somebody who was suffering from mercury poisoning when she saw him a month after he quit the production. She says that he was “being highly unprofessional” when he just didn’t show up one day.

In the same interview, she talked about fellow Mad Men co-star Jon Hamm’s “ham.” She said that she’s seen the picture, but that’s all she knows.

Moss can currently be seen on television in the sixth season of Mad Men. The next season will be the show’s last so it’s anybody’s guess where she’ll end up afterwards.

  • ‘I Dream Of Jeannie’ Costume Worn By Barbara Eden At Charity Event

The iconic I Dream Of Jeannie costume was donned by Barbara Eden during a charity event over the weekend.

People reports that Eden wore her now-famous I Dream of Jeannie costume at the Life Ball charity event in Vienna over the weekend. Eden, 78, still looked great in the costume that made her a household name in 1965. She hung out on stage in costume with former president Bill Clinton. There’s got to be a weird cross over fan-fiction in there somewhere, but we’ll save that for another time.

I Dream Of Jeannie hasn’t been on the air since it was canceled in 1970 after five years of fulfilling America’s wishes. Eden did, however, reprise her role as Jeannie for two made-for-TV films in I Dream Of Jeannie: 15 Years Later and I Still Dream Of Jeannie. With Eden adorning her Jeannie costume after more than 20 years, fans will undoubtedly request that she star in a third film. At best, we’ll probably get a film reboot with a younger star while Eden cameos.

Either way, Eden reprising her role as Jeannie surely raised plenty of money at Europe’s largest charity event dedicated to AIDS and HIV research.

  • Arrested Development Creator: Binge Watching On Netflix Could Make It Less Fun

Arrested Development’s return via Netflix is only days away (it will be available on Sunday, May 26th), and fans who have been waiting for years are ready to dive in.

Netflix’s exclusive shows have brought about a new trend of “binge watching” (watching the entire season immediately, as opposed to the traditional one episode per week format), but should we really be doing this to ourselves?

While Arrested Development’s new season will indeed be released all at once, the show’s creator, Mitch Hurwitz, warns that viewers who choose to watch it this way may miss out on some of the fun. In an interview with Wired, he said:

“I think of it more like writing a mini-series than something [for] binge watching… I think that people do sit down and watch it all at once. Personally, I think [that] will be very fatiguing and will lose some of the fun of being able to mull on it. But I think that with the majority of binge watchers, it’s a modified binge watching, just like the majority of novel readers. You know, you don’t read it all at once. But you are in control of when you feel like going back to it… I personally hope people don’t sit and watch it for, you know, 500 minutes or longer.”

Don’t underestimate the years of anticipation leading up to this season. Die hard fans who were outraged by the show’s original cancellation have had to wade through rumor after rumor about the show’s return and a possible movie for a long time. The fact that the show is actually back is still shocking to many. While some may choose to take their time and savor it (leaving some time between episodes), my guess is that many of these fans will want to consume it all as quickly as possible, then of course, consume it over and over again.

That is, if Arrested’s return lives up to expectations and the greatness that made fans fall in love with it oh so long ago. We’ll find out soon enough.

  • House Of Cards Season 2 Casting Underway

House Of Cards Season 2 Casting Underway

Casting for Season 2 of Netflix’s breakout hit House of Cards is currently underway in Maryland.

Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley recently announced that the show had returned to production in the state, as producers take advantage of a tax credit it offers to film productions.

On Tuesday, O’Malley was hanging out on set:

He caught up with House of Cards star Kevin Spacey again on Saturday:

Spacey, by the way, apparently wore a ring from the show at Preakness:

On Saturday, according to the Baltimore Sun, about a thousand people showed up at the Bel Air Reckord Armory for a casting call for the show. David Anderson reports:

“It was a great cross section of people, I think, that will allow us to depict all walks of life in Washington, D.C.,” local casting director Kimberly Skyrme said.

Skyrme, who is the owner of Kimberly Skyrme Casting of University Park in Prince George’s County, and her staff took headshots and the resumes, and spent several minutes speaking with hundreds of men, women and children who came through the Armory gymnasium throughout the day Saturday.

While a release date for the second season has not yet been set, fans will be happy to know that the ball is indeed rolling. In the meantime, they can expect more good stuff coming from Netflix. Later this week, Arrested Development will finally make its long-awaited return as a Netflix-exclusive.

Meanwhile, fans of Netflix’s most recent original show, Hemlock Grove, are eagerly awaiting a second season.

House of Cards Season 1 will hit DVD on June 11th.

  • “SNL” Cast Crisis As Key Members Take Off

“SNL” Cast Crisis As Key Members Take Off

“Saturday Night Live” may be facing a serious blow soon when Bill Hader and Seth Meyers leave, and that can’t be good for a show that has already seen a slip in viewership due to a severe lack of funny (although this past weekend garnered exceptionally high ratings when Ben Affleck hosted and Kanye West was the musical guest).

Hader and Meyers are two of the biggest catalysts in the show’s success, and to see them go will mean the producers will have to lean heavily on the talents of newcomers, especially with rumors floating that Fred Armisen and Jason Sudeikis will be leaving soon as well.

But some think that a large cast rotation is a good thing, judging by past events. It might make room for a fresh crop of hungry talent, and that could be just what the show needs.

This past weekend’s show was the last for Hader, who says it was bittersweet.

“It was a hard decision, but it has to happen at some point,” Hader said. “It got to a point where I said, ‘Maybe it’s just time to go.’”

  • Brady Bunch Reunion At Ohio Amusement Park

A “Brady Bunch” reunion took place at an Ohio amusement park over the weekend to mark the 40th anniversary of the episode that took place there in the ’70s.

The famous episode was filmed at King’s Island, which is not far from Cincinnati. Barry Williams, Christopher Knight, and Susan Olsen showed up to celebrate with some roller coaster rides and also held four shows during their stay, where they answered fans’ questions and reminisced about the good old days.

The episode was one of the most popular for the show, up there with the family’s vacation to Hawaii. Audiences seemed to enjoy seeing the Bradys get out of their oddly-built house (can we say “no toilets”?) and into real-world situations.

“I think everybody, at some point in their life, wanted to be a Brady,” Williams said. “Their whole family seemed so perfect. They were so nice. I think it resonates with the child in all of us to want to be Brady.”
