  • Netflix Just Posted Nearly 8 Minutes Of Vince Gilligan Answering Questions About ‘Breaking Bad’

Netflix has posted a nearly 8-minute video of Vince Gilligan, creator of Breaking Bad, answering questions from fans about the show. While not a Netflix original, Netflix has been credited with greatly helping the show expand its audience.

Netflix is streaming the new episodes right after they air in the UK. It recently added the first part of the last season here in the U.S.

Among topics addressed: Why the name “Breaking Bad,” how the idea of the show has changed, the show’s UK reception, Bryan Cranston, using the name Heisenberg, ideas that were scrapped for being too dark and Badger’s Star Trek episode.

    Enjoy.

  • Netflix Scores Aziz Ansari Stand-Up Special ‘Buried Alive’ To Add To Growing List Of Exclusives

Netflix continues to expand its stand-up comedy offerings.

Comedian and actor Aziz Ansari announced today that he has a new stand-up special coming to Netflix, set to debut in November.

Ansari says the special will be available on Netflix worldwide, and a $5 download option will be available six months later for those who don’t have Netflix, so he can expand his audience further.

The news follows some other recent exclusive stand-up special additions to Netflix, including titles from Doug Stanhope, Mike Birbiglia, Rob Schneider and John Hodgman.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and CFO David Wells said in a letter to investors last month, “Beyond series, we will be expanding our Originals initiative to include broadly appealing feature documentaries and stand-up comedy specials. Netflix has become a big destination for fans of these much loved and often under-distributed genres.”

Netflix also continues to expand its non-exclusive comedic titles. The company recently inked a deal with 20th Century Fox to stream the hit sitcom New Girl, and the second season of that will appear on Netflix when the third season airs on Fox.

Ansari has a couple other specials currently available on Netflix, including 2009’s Intimate Moments and last year’s Dangerously Delicious.

  • ‘New Girl’ Season 2 Gets Netflix Release Date

At the beginning of July, Netflix announced that it had signed an exclusive multi-year streaming deal with 20th Century Fox to stream the sitcom New Girl, which stars Zooey Deschanel.

Netflix immediately added the first season, and now just under two months later, we’ve already got a Netflix release date for the second season. We’re told that it will hit Netflix streaming on September 17th. This happens to be the same day that Season 3 premieres on Fox.

Unlike with the coming addition of The Walking Dead: Season 3, your’e not going to get a couple weeks to get caught up before the new season premieres, but still, they’re getting another season up pretty quickly, considering the first one only recently became available.

New Girl has proven to be the biggest breakout sitcom hit of the season and we are thrilled to be able offer it so quickly to our U.S. subscribers,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos, when the company first announced the content acquisition. “We know our members love comedies and that they’ll enjoy watching all the current and future episodes of New Girl whenever and wherever they want.”

“We are delighted that Netflix viewers will now have the opportunity to enjoy this remarkable comedy,” added Gina Brogi, Executive Vice President, Worldwide Pay Television and Subscription Video on Demand, 20th Century Fox Television Distribution. “As a leader in digital distribution, Netflix is an important partner for us. We are thrilled to continue building our relationship with them.”

Netflix has also been offering some exclusive comedic content. In addition to Arrested Development, the hit dramedy Orange is the New Black, and the upcoming Ricky Gervais-starring Derek, they’ve been putting out some exclusive stand-up specials.

Here’s a look at some more newly added content.

  • Lilyhammer Season 2 On The Way, But Season 3 Up In The Air

We know the second season of Lilyhammer, Netflix’s first original series, will be coming out, but things aren’t so clear for the show after that.

A Facebook community page about Lilyhammer points to an article from VG.no talking about uncertainty about the third season. It’s in Norwegian, but here’s a snippet from the Google-translated version:

Steven Van Zandt’s still not sure if “Lilly Hammer 3” will be created. If it happens, it’s Bruce Springsteen tour, which determines the recording days.

VG met Steven Van Zandt, lead actress and producer of “Lilyhammer” on Blue Canvas event in Oslo. Here he was to talk about season two of the hit TV series, which is to look at NRK later this fall. Speculation about what will be another season has gone on for long , but when VG ask him to still can not give any confirmation. – We’re still talking about it, it looks like it’s going to happen, but there are some complex negotiations that are now underway , says Van Zandt to VG. Do you think we’re going to see season three? – I hope it will happen, we should know soon, he said.

Obviously, the translation is not perfect, but I think we can get the general gist here.

Netflix has seemed pretty gung-ho about keeping its original shows going so far, with second seasons for House of Cards, Hemlock Grove and Orange is the New Black already moving forward, not to mention clear interest in keeping Arrested Development going.

Lilyhammer has been around longer than all of these, however, and frankly hasn’t generated the buzz that the others have. Also being the oldest of Netflix’s shows could make it first on the chopping block if and when Netflix decides to stop renewing some of its programs.

    But…

Based on this roughly-translated bit of what Van Zandt had to say, it sounds like a third season may very well still be in the cards. Netflix will likely want to see how the second season plays first, though it did renew Orange is the New Black before it even debuted to audiences.

They managed to work around the Springsteen touring schedule to get the second season of Lilyhammer going. If you’re a fan of the show, I wouldn’t worry too much about it going away just yet.

We don’t have a concrete release date for Lilyhammer: Season 2 at this point, but Netflix said in a letter to investors last month that it would be coming out this year. Now, in this VG.no article, we appear to have that down to the fall.

We’ve reached out to Netflix for comment, and will update if we hear back.

  • ‘The Walking Dead’ Season 3 Gets A Netflix Release Date

As fans know, the fourth season of AMC’s The Walking Dead is just around the corner, but many are also waiting for last season to hit Netflix. Well, that’s just around the corner too, and will happen even sooner.

If you’ve been wondering when that day would come, wonder no more. It will come on September 29th, giving you two full weeks to get caught up (or reacquainted) before the new season. In the meantime, the first two seasons are available, so really, you have plenty of time to watch the entire series if you want (though I highly recommend using some of that time to read the books).

Season 4 will premiere on AMC on October 13th.

In other The Walking Dead news, Telltale Games announced this week that he first season of its Walking Dead game series is hitting Ouya this winter.

Update: The DVDs are currently available on Netflix, though at the moment, they’re showing up as “long wait” for me. As far as we know, the date discussed is still the plan for streaming.

  • Twitter Has Acquired Trendrr

    Twitter Has Acquired Trendrr

Trendrr announced today that it has been acquired by Twitter. Trendrr is a company that fits right in with all the TV and advertising-related efforts Twitter has been focusing on lately, as it claims to “harness the power of real-time social data for media and advertising.”

The company posted a note on its blog about the news. Here’s an excerpt:

Over the last five years we have led the way in working with real-time data and television, unlocking the power and value of engagement around TV and creating compelling media experiences around content.

That’s why we are excited to be joining Twitter’s world class team, enabling us to realize bigger opportunities that drive better experiences for users, media and marketers – across Twitter and around the globe.

Having sat at this intersection of TV and social media for years, we’ve analyzed data from lots of platforms. What makes Twitter uniquely compelling among these platforms is its connection to the live moment — people sharing what’s happening, when it’s happening, to the world. We think we can help amplify even stronger the power of that connection to the moment inside of Twitter.

Trendrr says its Twitter-certified product Curatorr will work with media companies, marketers and display partners, and will continue to honor existing contracts from its Trendrr.TV offering, though it doesn’t plan to establish new ones for that.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In other Twitter news, the company also just released a new interface for conversations across its mobile apps and web experience.

  • ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Season 2 Will Have A Bearded Pete

Nick Stevenson, who plays Pete Harper on Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, will be back for the show’s second season. In case you’re having trouble placing him on the show, he’s the Australian husband of Piper’s best friend (at least in the outside world) Polly Harper.

Author Kobsupang Robertson posted an interview with Stevenson. When asked if we’ll see more him in Season 2, he responded, “Yes, I’ve been told to grow a beard in season 2. I’m not sure how many episodes I’ll be in. I hope I’m coming back. Otherwise—”

While it’s not necessarily an indication of what will actually happen, he also said he’d like to see his character go to the prison to see Piper with his wife.

Anything’s possible. The season is still being developed, according to Netflix, and if rumors of Laura Prepon leaving the show are true, then there will be plenty of room for the further expansion of other characters. We already know that will be happening with Pennsatucky, Crazy Eyes and Taystee, due to the actresses who play these characters getting promoted to series regulars.

At least one other cast member has also been added. News recently came out that the show has added Lorraine Toussaint, who will play a character named Vee, who according to Deadline, is described as “a longtime street tough who ran her own drug business, recruiting children to serve as runners.”

And Pete’s won’t be the only facial hair we’ll be seeing.

Season 2 began filming last month, and is due out next year. The first season will be coming to DVD, though a date has yet to be announced.

  • ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Season 1 DVD Release Date To Be Announced

While the release is still to be announced, you can rest assured that Netflix’s Orange is the New Black: Season 1 will be coming to DVD. If you don’t subscribe to Netflix, but you’re curious about what all the hype is about, this applies to you.

It also applies to you if you do subscribe to Netflix, but only the DVD-by-mail service, and not the streaming service (or obviously if you just want to own it).

While Netflix produces its original shows for its streaming service, the DVD/Blu-ray formats give these programs the chance to find a much wider audience. House of Cards was released to DVD/Blu-ray in June, though curiously, Lilyhammer, Netflix’s first original, appears to have only been released to DVD in the UK. Here in the U.S., you still have to subscribe to Netflix’s streaming service to watch it, though Netflix offers House of Cards discs for its DVD customers.

When House of Cards was released to DVD, it also became available to stream with Amazon. Episodes are available for purchase on an episode-by-episode basis ($1.99 a piece – even for HD). Presumably, OITNB will follow suit.

The House of Cards DVD/Blu-ray prices were listed as $55.99 and $65.99 respectively (though Amazon Prime members can get them for significantly cheaper). It seems likely that OITNB will follow a similar pricing model.

We’ve confirmed with Netflix that the show will indeed come to DVD. A Blu-ray release is unconfirmed, but highly likely. We’ve reached out for confirmation.

If your’e a fan of creator Jenjji Kohan’s work, you might also be interested to know that Weeds: The Complete Collection is coming to Blu-ray in November. That’s all eight seasons.

Orange is The New Black: Season 2 is currently in production, and is due out in 2014. According to cast members, the writing has only gotten better.

  • Xbox Time Warner Cable App Released

Back in June, Microsoft and Time Warner Cable announced that they had reached a deal for Xbox 360 consoles to stream hundreds of live cable TV channels to Time Warner customers. This week, the fruits of that deal have been revealed in a new Time Warner Cable app for Xbox 360.

According to Microsoft, the app provides “up to” 300 cable TV channels streaming through the Xbox 360. To see the channels, however, Xbox owners will have to be subscribers to both Time Warner Cable and Xbox Live Gold. From Microsoft’s statement:

For Xbox and our customers with Time Warner Cable, this is a landmark partnership and one that’s been a longtime in the making. We couldn’t be more excited to see this relationship come to fruition today, especially with the Fall TV and sports seasons right around the corner. The new TWC TV experience on Xbox is very compelling because it will bring more live TV channels to Xbox 360 than any other experience available on Xbox today.

The Time Warner deal and the app itself might serve as a preview for how Microsoft envisions the future of the Xbox brand. The company has stated its intent to put Xbox at the center of a full living-room experience that includes movies, TV, music, and games. Microsoft’s big announcement event for its upcoming Xbox One console focused heavily on how the console will integrate with TV.

  • ‘Arrested Development’ Movie Could Be Just For Netflix, According to Jason Bateman

We’ve been hearing about a possible Arrested Development movie for years, and since the launch of Season 4 on Netflix, creator Mitch Hurwitz has been hinting that the next chapter for the Bluth family would indeed come in the form of a movie. This week, Hurwitz talked to Rolling Stone, and said he’s currently writing it.

Now, Deadline has an interview out with star Jason Bateman, who talks a little about it (among other things). It sounds like it’s still up in the air in terms of whether the movie would come to theaters or just to Netflix. Here’s an excerpt from what Bateman had to say:

So it’s a three act saga Mitch wants to tell. He took the first act out of the script and put it in these Netflix episodes. What I understand is that it’s going to be a two-hour movie for theatrical distribution or for Netflix. This will (feasibly) allow the cast to be on the screen at the same time and get around all those contractual barriers that prevent other cast members from appearing on other shows. Maybe that will be in the next year or so. My original pitch was to do a Michael Apted 7 Up thing where every seven years we check in with the Bluths to see where they are at.

Hurwitz has indicated that Fox, which owns the franchise (even though they canceled it years ago), has been the main hold-up. They have to get the greenlight from Fox before they can actually make this thing, and certainly many details will still have to be worked out.

Either way, Netflix has made it clear that it would lend its full support to whatever format Hurwitz wants to pursue. Interestingly, in the Rolling Stone interview, Hurwitz said that he’s also working on another unspecified project for Netflix.

Netflix’s Arrested Development episodes are currently up for three Emmys. When asked if he was surprised it didn’t get more nominations, Bateman said it wasn’t surprising after the mixed reviews the season got, but implied that reviewing the season is like reviewing the first 20 minutes of a movie (see his above “first act” reference).

  • Time Warner Cable Offers Antennas to CBS Blackout Customers

Earlier this month, with thanks to a feud between Time Warner Cable and CBS, many Time Warner Cable customers are being censored from the popular network within their cable subscription package. With this in mind, in aid to keep customers satisfied, the cable provider is offering FREE antennas to its subscribers.

With CBS being such a well-known network since its first airing in the 1920s, the network broadcasts various current popular entertainment programs, such as: The Big Bang Theory, Jeopardy, NCIS, Big Brother, and the new series of Under The Dome.

Time Warner Cable released a statement on their website stating the following:

All blacked-out broadcast stations remain available over the air, and most households can receive the signals if they have the right equipment.”

Even though Time Warner Cable is available in various places around the continental U.S., the cable provider is only supplying free antennas in Dallas, Green Bay, Los Angeles, Milwaukee and New York City. Customers who want these free antennas will need to act quickly due to the company having only a limited supply. If consumers in these cities are not near a Time Warner Cable store, Time Warner Cable is offering $20 of credit for consumers to use in Best Buy stores to purchase an antenna for their television.

Even though the blackout has censored CBS for various consumers, CBS still remains strong in the stock market (source: Forbes). This shows that with this dispute happening, many viewers still stand strong and true to their CBS station.

Various users of the Twitterverse have reacted to this feud, and I have provided some of their reactions below:

  • Amazon And Hulu Have New Original Shows In The Works

Amazon And Hulu Have New Original Shows In The Works

While Netflix has received a lot of attention for its original shows throughout the year (including fourteen Emmy nominations and a much talked-about speech from Kevin Spacey last week), don’t forget, it’s online streaming competitors are gearing up to offer more original content as well.

Two of those competitors – Amazon and Hulu – both have new projects in the news today.

Amazon announced that it is greenlighting a pilot for a new original children’s series called Maker Shack Agency, which is being produced by Electus Studios. Here’s how Amazon describes it:

Maker Shack Agency follows the exploits of 13-year-old inventor Angus Wolfe, aka “Wolfie,” and his two best friends and fellow “makers,” Jo and Merle, in the hardscrabble town of Akron, Ohio. These three teenage thinkers and tinkerers use all the branches of science and personal ingenuity to solve their client’s problems by making a new invention every episode. Together, they make people’s lives better by coming up with science and technology-inspired inventions for their various problems.

Deadline reports that Hulu and Lionsgate have teamed up on a thirty-minute comedy series called Deadbeat. It comes from co-creators Cody Heller and Brett Konner, as well as Lionsgate TV and Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment. Hulu reportedly ordered ten episodes, and it will debut next year on both Hulu and Hulu Plus.

Deadbeat is apparently about a medium who helps ghosts settle unfinished business.

  • ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Season 2 Will Be Even More Compelling, According To Star Taylor Schilling

If you liked Netflix’s Orange is the New Black Season 1, it sounds like you’re really going to enjoy Season 2, if recent comments from the cast are any indication. Things are being taken up a notch, according to star Taylor Schilling, for example, who discussed working on the show in a nearly half-hour interview with The Huffington Post.

When asked what we can expect in the second season, Schilling says, “I think all of the characters and all the dynamics are just going deeper. Everybody is getting…it’s just getting fuller and richer, and to me, more compelling because we kind of know these women more, so we can dive more deeply into who they are.”

This somewhat mirrors comments made by other cast members. Danielle Brooks, who plays Taystee, and was recently promoted to series regular, said the writing on this season has gotten better.

“It’s really good,” she told E! News. “I think people are going to be so excited about season 2.”

We can certainly expect to see more of certain characters than we saw in Season 1. In addition to Brooks, actresses Uzo Aduba (Crazy Eyes) and Taryn Manning (Pennsatucky) have also been promoted to series regulars. Naturally, the promotion should equate to more screen time for these actresses, which means more character development.

It appears that Laura Prepon (Alex) will be leaving the show after a limited number of episodes. She was a major part of the first season, so her absence should free up plenty of time for other characters.

The events that occurred at the end of the first season will become a “ginormous” plot point in the second season, according to Manning, who recently spoke with Entertainment Tonight about her own character’s coming development:

”I think she’s ignorant in the sense that she didn’t go to school and made poor choices, but I think if she had, her brain is the type of brain that would have soaked up school. So when she calls her that, it’s totally jealousy. I think that’s where we’re going this season. Tiffany doesn’t necessarily think she sh*t doesn’t stink any more. She’s like, ‘I guess I’m not as tough as I thought because she kicked my ass.’”

Manning says she wants to keep the character “out there,” and “dive into her left brain.”

A couple other bits we’ve obtained from cast interviews: Dayanara Diaz may or may not be pregnant and Red apparently has plans to make sure nobody ever “taints her gravy” again.

“You will find out everything in the second season,” she told LA Weekly.

Season 2 does not have an official release date yet, but is due out in 2014. Production began last month.

  • ‘Arrested Development’ Movie Is Being Worked On, Creator Also Working On ‘Something Else’ For Netflix

Remember the days when we kept hearing about an Arrested Development movie that would never happen? You know, back after Fox canceled the show, but way before Netflix announced that it would resurrect it.

Well, the days of hearing about that off and on are back, but things look a lot more promising this time. Arrested Development is no longer simply a discarded television show. It’s a highly-regarded, Emmy-nominated part of Netflix’s big original content push. The fourth season (Netflix’s first) earned three nominations. It also doesn’t hurt that most of its cast members are also now a lot bigger in the industry (Tony Hale has also been nominated for an Emmy separately, for his role on Veep).

Creator Mitch Hurwitz has been talking about wanting to do more, and Netflix has expressed its full support. The next chapter, however, will be a movie, rather than Season 5 (though another season would come after the movie). Hurwitz has been saying for a while now that he wants to do the movie next, but now he has told Rolling Stone that he is actually working on it:

“I’m working on the movie right now. I can’t get into much more detail because I don’t want to scare anybody off. I don’t want to be presumptuous about it. I don’t own the property outright – it’s a 20th Century Fox property. But everybody seems really into it and really eager to make a movie.”

“I’m hoping it happens as soon as possible. But I want to be very careful about not putting out false information. I want to get a time and tell everybody when it’s happening and not play with people. Right now, I’m trying to do something else for Netflix and a movie project and things. I’m always sort of superstitious about talking about this stuff before it happens. It’s the best way to guarantee it doesn’t happen.”

Hurwitz said in a previous interview with Empire that the ball is basically in Fox’s court as far as the movie goes. Obviously we still don’t know how this movie would be released if it actually happens. Will it debut on the big screen? Will it just come to Netflix? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Perhaps even more interesting is what else Hurtwitz is working on with Netflix. We’ll keep you posted if we learn more about that. Running Wilde, another Hurwitz show with Will Arnett and David Cross is currently available to watch on Netflix, but it’s going away on September 1st, so if you want to check that out, you better get to it.

  • Here’s The Kevin Spacey Q&A That Followed That Amazing Speech

Actor Kevin Spacey gave a popular speech about the television industry – past, present and future – at the Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival last week. It has since been the topic of numerous industry headlines.

The House of Cards actor/executive producer also engaged in a Q&A at the event. The festival’s YouTube channel has shared part of that for your enjoyment:

The speech itself, which is a lot more inspiring (and time consuming) can be found here in its entirety.

  • Laura Prepon Recently Commented On ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Character’s Future (Kind Of)

Earlier this month, rumor came out that Laura Prepon will be leaving the cast of Netflix’s much buzzed-about Orange is the New Black. She hasn’t had a lot to say about the rumors, but did tweet a little over a week ago that she would soon be heading back to New York, where they shoot the show.

Prepon talked about shooting in New York in an interview on Cosmo Radio’s Wake up with Taylor on SiriusXM. (Update: A reader has brought it to our attention that this interview actually took place in July, before the rumors, though it doesn’t change a whole lot). Filming of Season 2 also began in July, by the way.

When asked if her character stays in jail, she replied, “I don’t know. I’m not allowed to say.”

During the interview she talked about her shooting experience, including about how they shoot in Queens, but for outside shots, they shoot at an abandoned children’s hospital.

“It looks great on camera, but when we’re all there, we’re a little creeped out,” she says, commenting on the “weird test dummies” and “weird kids drawings” that are still there.

She also mentions that the cast is not allowed to wear makeup (at least the inmates) because they want everyone to be natural-looking.

Netflix has said that rumors of Prepon’s exit from the show were inaccurate, but admitted that the second season is still in development, and that nothing had been confirmed. The original BuzzFeed report about her departure indicated that she would still return for a limited number of episodes to wrap up her storyline, and that she would have the option to return later.

Co-star Taryn Manning was asked about the situation by Entertainment Tonight. She said, “Well, there’s a book and that character goes to another facility in that book. I’m not sure what’s going on, I definitely feel a bit of a loss, but to be totally honest with you, no one is really talking about it. This cast is so noble. I wish her the best and hope everything is OK with her. I hear she’s directing her own film, which she passionately talked about on set, so maybe she’s off doing that. I think she’s amazing, so it’ll be interesting without her around, but I don’t know the facts — although I hear she will be filming some of this season.”

Series lead Taylor Schilling told E! News, “I don’t really know anything about that. I just know she’s an amazing actress, and I’ve really had an incredible time working with her, and I know that that relationship…there’s no end to that relationship.”

Prepon has been the most searched-for actress on the show, according to data provided by Bing. A lot of fans feel that her exit would be a major blow to the show, but it does have a large cast with more than a few fan favorites, and some of the others have recently been promoted to series regulars.

  • ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Characters Have Their Own Netflix User Profile Icons?

As you may know, Netflix launched user profiles a few weeks ago. The feature lets you have separate profiles for each member of your household, at least if you don’t have more than five members.

Each profile gets its own icon. Here are the currently available options:

    Netflix user profile icons

I’m not sure if this was in any way intentional on Netflix’s part, but Orange is the New Black, the hit Netflix original series, found some of the icons to be perfect for a few of its characters:

Probably not intentional (I don’t think Crazy Eyes is a cyclops), but still.

If they’re going to do that, they should include options from all of the Netflix originals. There really needs to be a Gangy option at the very least.

Profiles are currently available on the Netflix website, iPad, iPhone, PS3, Xbox 360, Apple TV and newer Smart TVs and Blu-Ray players. It will hit other devices in time.

  • ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Cast Members Talk Season 2, Laura Prepon

E! News has just released a new interview with Danielle Brooks and Taylor Schilling, two stars of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black. The pair talk a little bit about the second season, what’s going on with Laura Prepon (who is rumored to be leaving), and more.

On the Prepon situation, Schilling says, “I don’t really know anything about that. I just know she’s an amazing actress, and I’ve really had an incredible time working with her, and I know that that relationship…there’s no end to that relationship.”

It then cuts, so if she had anything else to say about it, we really don’t get to hear it.

Co-star Taryn Manning spoke a little about it with Entertainment Tonight as well.

“That’s the cool thing about this show,” Brooks says. “You never know what’s going to happen. People can go away or come back or like, you never know, obviously. That happened to me – my character.”

Brooks says the writing, which was “amazing before,” has gotten even better in the upcoming season. “It’s really good. I think people are going to be so excited about season 2,” she adds.

Oh yeah, and the twerking video comes up in the interview oo. Brooks says there are more videos to come.

Season 2 does not have an official release date yet, but is due out in 2014. Production began last month, and Brooks has been promoted to a series regular.

  • Taryn Manning Speaks About Co-Star Laura Prepon’s Role And Rumored Departure From ‘Orange Is The New Black’

As you may know, rumor has it that Laura Prepon is leaving Netflix’s Orange is the New Black.

BuzzFeed first reported that she would return just long enough to wrap up her story, and then would no longer be part of the cast, but would have the option to return later. She has not directly commented publicly about the situation, but tweeted this week that she “can’t wait to get back to NY soon to start shooting”.

OITNB is indeed shooting in New York at Kauffman Astoria Studios.

Netflix has called the rumors of her departure “inaccurate,” while also noting that the “season is still developing and nothing is confirmed.”

TV Guide has also since reported that it has confirmed that Prepon’s character’s story is set to wrap up early in the second season. It’s looking more and more likely that she will indeed be leaving the show.

Co-star Taryn Manning, who plays Pennsatucky on the show (and was recently promoted to series regular), spoke about the situation in an interview with Entertainment Tonight:

Well, there’s a book and that character goes to another facility in that book. I think she’s amazing, so it’ll be interesting without her around, but I don’t know the facts — although I hear she will be filming some of this season.

Manning also hinted about where her own character is going in the second season. More on that here.

  • ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Season 2 ‘Ginormous’ Plot Point Revealed

As you may know, production for Season 2 of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black is currently underway. As cast members have been giving interviews to various media outlets, we’ve seen some discussion here and there about what will happen in the second season, but we haven’t really seen much in the way of what is actually going to happen.

    Until now.

Potential spoilers head, particularly if you haven’t finished the first season.

Taryn Manning, who plays Pennsatucky, spoke with Entertainment Tonight, and gave away more details about the forthcoming season than anyone else has so far. She was recently promoted to series regular, so it should come as no surprise that her character will have a significant role.

Speaking about Pennsatucky, Manning tells ET, ” I think she’s ignorant in the sense that she didn’t go to school and made poor choices, but I think if she had, her brain is the type of brain that would have soaked up school. So when she calls her that, it’s totally jealousy. I think that’s where we’re going this season. Tiffany doesn’t necessarily think she sh*t doesn’t stink any more. She’s like, ‘I guess I’m not as tough as I thought because she kicked my ass.’”

ET’s interviewer brings up the final scene from season 1, and how Healy gave Pennsatucky the “green light” to kill Piper.

Manning responds, “It’s funny you mention that. That is a huge, ginormous plot point in season two. I’m back in New York right now and [today] we’re filming a big scene about that very thing. It’s one of my bigger scenes in that it has a ton of dialogue — back and forth back and forth — which I love.”

Manning says she wants to keep the character “out there,” and “dive into her left brain.”

Okay, so not a whole lot in the way of spoilers for the second season, but who wants that anyway?

Manning had plenty of other interesting things to say in the interview, and you should read it if you get a chance.
