  • Monica Lewinsky “Virgin” Comment Starts Jokes Again

The late 1990s were not kind to Monica Lewinsky. She was the punchline to many jokes about dresses, cigars, and interns. When the scandal surrounding President Clinton finally blew over, she was left to try to figure out how to make a life for herself.

For a while she was an A-list celebrity in social circles. But America eventually moved on. Twin Towers falling and economies collapsing will do that to an attention span.

But Monica Lewinsky is still among the living. She is 40 years old. And now that the words “Clinton” and “President” are starting to be spoken in the same sentence yet again, she is popping up as a news item.

Senator Rand Paul brought her up as a topic that he considers relevant in the conversation about Hillary Clinton’s potential candidacy. Paul told Meet the Press that Bill Clinton’s affair with Lewinsky is appropriate to bring up in the context of a Hillary Clinton run.

“This isn’t having an affair,” Paul specified. “He took advantage of a girl that was 20 years old and an intern in his office.”

With the clouds of a Clinton candidacy gathering, Lewinsky has takes to the pages of magazines like Vanity Fair to dig in and tell her side of things, hopefully getting some people to see her as a human with feelings, rather than some tabloid fodder.

“In 1998, when news of my affair with Bill Clinton broke, I was arguably the most humiliated person in the world,” she wrote in a Vanity Fair piece. “Thanks to the Drudge Report, I was also possibly the first person whose global humiliation was driven by the Internet.”

Lewinsky explains that she passed up a lot of money from offers to tell her story. To do so would have only brought her more humiliation from the public.

“Apparently, others talking about me is O.K.,” she explained. “Me speaking out for myself is not. I turned down offers that would have earned me more than $10 million, because they didn’t feel like the right thing to do.”

Now Lewinsky has given her first television interview in a decade.

Her appearance is for a National Geographic special called The 90s: The Last Great Decade?. In it, she discusses her unique role in American history.

“To be called stupid, and a slut, and a bimbo, and ditzy, and to be taken out of context, it was excruciating,” Lewinsky said. “That was one of the worst days of my life. I was a virgin to humiliation of that level, until that day.”

On news of Lewinsky’s interview, the joke machine is spinning up again:

Or how about this tweet that makes a huge presumption about “that day”, referring to the entire affair as humiliating?

However, according to the interview, “that day” that Lewinsky refers to was September 11, 1998, the day the Starr Report was released. The entire country tuned in to a 24-hour news cycle that churned out every salacious detail that Special Prosecutor Ken Starr’s sprawling investigation managed to turn up.

If and when Hillary runs, Lewinsky could come under scrutiny by the likes of Rand Paul, yet again.

Monica Lewinsky is letting the world know that she will not remain a recluse any longer.

  • Netflix’s ‘Narcos’ Picks Up Another Cast Member

Netflix’s ‘Narcos’ Picks Up Another Cast Member

Earlier this month, we learned that Pedro Pascal, fresh off a memorable turn on Game of Thrones, will star opposite Wagner Moura in Netflix’s upcoming series Narcos.

Deadline is now reporting that Manolo Cardona has also joined the cast as a series regular.

Cardona’s acting credits date back to 1992 in the Columbian daytime series Padres e Hijos. U.S. audiences may recognize him from Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Some U.S. audiences anyway.

News about Narcos first emerged over a year ago, and the show signed Moura as well as its showrunner, Chris Brancato, back in April. Soon after, Netflix pushed the debut back to early 2015, with on-location filming in Colombia to begin this summer.

According to the previously released description, Narcos will “chronicle the life and death of Escobar, the ruthless cartel boss and known terrorist who also was a congressman, a family man and revered by the poor as a new Robin Hood….[It]begins with the hunt for Escobar but moves on to the rise and subsequent fall of the Cali cartel, the north valley cartel, and the move into Mexico.”

Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos has said that “this version of the Escobar saga will be like nothing ever seen before.”

    We can’t wait.

Filming of another new Netflix show, Sense8, has just begun filming.

Twitter announced on Thursday that it has acquired SnappyTV, which lets broadcasters edit TV snippets for social media.

Twitter Director of Product Management Baljeet Singh explains the reasoning behind the acquisition: “One of the best ways to follow events as they unfold is through real-time videos on Twitter. As we continue to invest in video, it’s important for us to provide tools that make it easy for TV broadcasters, businesses, and event producers to share high-quality videos.”

The platform is already used by Twitter media partners to share clips on Twitter organically and through Twitter Amplify.

The SnappyTV Team writes in a blog post:

When we created SnappyTV four years ago, we believed in the importance of mobile, as a way for people to share important moments, and in the value of social, so that people could experience those moments together. Over the years, we’ve developed a close partnership with Twitter –– we’ve worked together to make it easy for publishers to bring video clips to Twitter, both organically and with sponsors via Twitter Amplify, and we’ve also built Twitter data directly into our editing platform. Through this partnership, people have been able to turn to Twitter to view highlights from major events from world championships to TV and awards shows to Presidential elections, just to name a few.

With Twitter we will continue our commitment to maintaining an open platform for social broadcasting of live events, across a variety of digital platforms. • Netflix Wants More Original Comedies, Horror

Netflix Wants More Original Comedies, Horror

Netflix is very interested in launching more original comedies, and is thinking about westerns and more horror shows as well.

The Hollywood Reporter has an extensive interview with Cindy Holland, the company’s head of original content. Asked about what genres Netflix would still like to try, she told the publication:

Comedies of varying types are an area of extreme interest to us. We haven’t seen the perfect Western project yet, either. Although Hemlock covers horror and supernatural to some extent, there are several subgenres within those categories that we haven’t reached into yet and would look to explore if the right project came along.

As far as comedy goes, Wet Hot American Summer appears to still be in the cards, based on the interview. They’re also still ready for another season of Arrested Development whenever creator Mitch Hurwitz is.

It’s also noted in the piece that Hemlock Grove drew more visitors than even House of Cards, so it’s quite understandable why they’d want to explore more horror opportunities. Personally I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the Friday the 13th series that’s in development. Creator Sean Cunningham has mentioned Netflix in the past as a possible destination of interest. They seem like a perfect match to me. Netflix likes shows with built-in audiences that like to binge. I think USA Up All Night has proven hat people will watch back to back Friday films even when they’re watered down for television.

“I don’t think any genres are off-limits to us,” Holland said at one point, specifically in response to questions about interest in Chelsea Handler for a late night show (which the company just officially announced). Asked about live events, Holland reiterated a point the company has made in the past in that on-demand will continue to be the focus.

Some other interesting takeaways from the interview: Orange is the New Black is still Netflix’s biggest show; there is surprisingly little overlap in viewership among Netflix originals; and Netflix wanted True Detective and Fargo, but lost out to HBO and FX respectively.

Hemlock Grove: Season 2 is next up on the schedule, premiering July 11th. Here’s a new behind-the-scenes look at that.

  • True Blood Returns This Sunday For Final Season

It’s summertime and with the hot weather and lazy days returns the HBO blood-filled drama True Blood. However, by the end of this summer, we won’t see any more new episodes. The seventh and final season of the series that pits vampires versus humans begins this Sunday at 9 pm.

Entertainment Weekly sat down for an interview with Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer (Sookie Stackhouse and Vampire Bill). The pair, who have become estranged lovers on the show, got married in real life in 2010. Then had twins in 2012.

They’re on the cover of this week’s EW, lying in a wooden coffin. Paquin is in the buff, and Moyer has his fangs out.

Paquin spoke about how much playing Sookie Stackhouse has changed her life, “Because it has lasted seven years and because of the relationships, not just between us but the way they all evolved as a family, it’s been extraordinary to have that experience that is completely life-changing in all of the best possible ways — and with the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. We will always have this.”

Season 6 ended with our heroine Sookie in the arms of Alcide. However, Bill is clearly still in the picture and thinks that Sookie needs his protection from the hoards of infected Hep-V vampires. Of course, Alcide thinks that he can protect Sookie and doesn’t take kindly to Bill thinking otherwise. Sookie has already sworn off Bill, and she refuses her former lover’s help.

Joe Manganiello, who plays Alcide, spoke about the upcoming season, “The town is under attack, everyone has kind of retreated into Bon Temps and is hunkered down trying to defend themselves against these rabid, Hep-V vampires, so [Alcide] is now a part of the town.” He added, “There will be some sexiness going on at Gran’s house, and lots of blood and death and craziness — nobody stays happy for too long in Bon Temps.”

From the trailer, it looks like all the effort that both humans and vampires have attempted to make in the past six seasons trying to live in a peaceful world together, has been shattered. Now, with the hungry infected vampires aiming towards Bon Temps, a blood bath will surely follow.

  • Hulu Original ‘Deadbeat’ Heads To DVD

Hulu Original ‘Deadbeat’ Heads To DVD

They don’t get as much media attention as Netflix’s, but Hulu has original shows too. One of them, Deadbeat, is reportedly heading to DVD later this summer.

The official description from Hulu is as follows:

Deadbeat is an all new original comedy series. Kevin Pacalioglu (series star Tyler Labine) may have no money and no clue, but he can see dead people, so that’s pretty cool. Faced with a constant stream of stubborn spirits, Pac goes to whatever lengths require the least amount of effort to help New York City’s most frivolous ghosts finish their unfinished business.

John Squires at DreadCentral shares a snippet from the press release, which gives the series an August 26th DVD (plus digital) release from Lionsgate Home Entertainment.

The DVD will be available exclusively at Target for about $20, and will come with three bonus featurettes: “Meet Camomile and Sue,” “Meet Pac and Roofie,” and “Medium for Hire – What Is Deadbeat?”.

You can of course watch the show on Hulu itself. Episodes 1-10 are available for free here.

Mattel VP of Franchise Development and Content Distribution Michael Riley added, “Today’s kids want to watch their favorite characters anywhere and everywhere they are. Netflix is the perfect home for developing and expanding the already enchanting world of Ever After High. We’’re excited to be working with Netflix and for the show to be a part of its growing portfolio of original kids programming.””

Before the series debuts, earlier in 2015, Netflix will debut a new movie called Ever After High Spring Unsprung. The series will be twelve episodes.

This is only the most recent in a string of kids programming announcements from Netflix. Last week, Netflix announced a new version of The Magic School Bus. This was followed by the announcement of a Dinotrux series.

  • Breaking Bad Now Available In Ultra HD 4K On Netflix

Breaking Bad Now Available In Ultra HD 4K On Netflix

Netflix’s Joris Evers announced on Twitter that Breaking Bad is now streaming in Ultra HD 4K everywhere the service is available.

The company had said in the past that the show would be available in 4K in June, and has now made good on that promise.

Netflix began offering 4K streams in April. Last month, it gave an update on its efforts, and talked about the future of the format.

“We’re excited about the picture quality we’re seeing in Ultra HD 4K, and we’re even more excited that expert reviewers of the first TVs capable of streaming Netflix Ultra HD 4K, including the Samsung UH8550 and UH9000, seem to agree,” wrote Netflix’s Richard Smith. “This is just the the beginning, expect more TVs that support Netflix in Ultra HD 4K in stores soon from Samsung, Sony, LG, and Vizio. If you buy one of these new TVs, just connect it to a power outlet and the internet, turn it on and sign into Netflix. Ultra HD 4K streaming will work out of the box. ”

Netflix recommends available bandwidth of at least 20Mbps to get the highest-quality 4K experience. The stream is actually about 16Mbps, but the rest is for variability of service. The company notes that how the broadband provider handles incoming bits from Netflix is also a variable.

  • Hulu Gets More Movies Through New Magnolia Pictures Partnership

Hulu Gets More Movies Through New Magnolia Pictures Partnership

Hulu just announced a new partnership with Magnolia Pictures, which will see various movies titles come to the streaming service.

Naturally, as the latest awesome episode of Game of Thrones was directed by Neil Marshall, Hulu is talking up his film Centurion as one of the main attractions in addition to the cult hit Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil.

Griffin Gmelich writes on the Hulu blog:

In our continued efforts to bring new and exciting content to our users, we are proud to announce that Magnolia Pictures will expand the breadth of premium entertainment offerings on Hulu and Hulu Plus through its Magnolia and Magnet brands. Magnolia Pictures is part of a vertically-integrated group of media properties co-owned by Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban that also includes the Landmark Theatres chain, production company 2929 Productions and high-definition cable networks AXS TV and HDNet Movies.

If you’re a Hulu Plus subscriber, look out for my favorite movie of 2010: “Tucker & Dale vs. Evil.” It’s hard to pull off a film that straddles both horror and comedy, but – with the help of Tyler Labine’s rare type of talent – this film quickly reached cult status. It was Tyler’s memorable role as Dale Dobson in this bifurcated genre and iconic film that made him the perfect star for our Hulu Original, “Deadbeat.”

Other films named include The Girlfriend Experience, Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop, Freakonomics, A Place at the Table, Food, Inc., Marley, Jiro Dreams of Sushi, and 13 Assassins.

Netflix has had most or all of these titles for some time.

  • Netflix Announces ‘Dinotrux’ Series For 2015

Netflix Announces ‘Dinotrux’ Series For 2015

Those Netflix DreamWorks Animation announcements are really rolling in now. Last summer, the two announced what was Netflix’s biggest deal for original content to date, which would see Netflix getting exclusive new programming from the animation studio.

Today, the companies announced a new title scheduled for next year: Dinotrux, which is described as “an all-new action-packed original series featuring hybrid dinosaur-construction characters who are set to build and battle over three seasons.”

It’s based on the award-winning book series from Chris Gall. The first one was named Publisher’s Weekly Children’s Book of the Year in 2009. Here’s the official description of the series:

Dinotrux follows the adventures of two unlikely best friends as they navigate the adrenaline-filled mechanical domain ruled by stunning oversize creatures like Tyrannosaurus Trux, Scraptors and Tow-a-constrictors. The show’s heroes are Ty, a massive and fiercely loyal T-Trux with a big vision for a new world, and his best buddy Revvit, a razor-smart Reptool who is the engineering brains of the operation. Together they build an incredible world of epic scope populated by groups of Dinotrux and Reptools, each with their own personality and skill set as they unite to defend their community from the biggest and baddest of them all, D-Strux, as he threatens to destroy everything they’ve built.

“Netflix continues to be an incredible partner and we’re excited to work with them once again to get this completely original series into the homes of families around the globe,” said Margie Cohn, Head of Television at DreamWorks Animation. “This is a property that creates a new world with stunning visuals and fantastic action combined with great characters and comedy. In Dinotrux, the biggest guy and the smallest creature become best friends and through their unique partnership evolve their primitive world – a theme that we think will resonate with kids.”

“DreamWorks has a proven track record of creating beloved characters and we’re excited to be able to bring the Dinotrux friends to our members,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President Originals Content at Netflix. “We know kids and families love discovering new series to watch together and we’re pleased to continue to expand our show line-up from DreamWorks.”

The first DreamWorks Animation exclusive to hit Netflix was Turbo FAST back in December. So far that’s the only one available. In March, they announced three more: King Jullen, Puss In Boots and Veggie Tales in the House. A couple weeks ago, they announced the Netflix revival of DreamWorks Dragons after a canceled two-season run on Cartoon Network.

While not related to the DreamWorks deal, we learned earlier this week that Netflix is also bringing back The Magic School Bus in 2016.

Dinotrux will debut in the spring.

  • ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Season 3 Casting News

‘Orange Is The New Black’ Season 3 Casting News

Orange is the New Black: Season 2 has only been available on Netflix for a week, but the third season is reportedly already filming. There are also a couple pieces of significant casting news.

Deadline reports that Dascha Polanco, who play’s Daya Diaz, has been promoted to a series regular.

While certainly good news for Polanco, most fans of the show probably already consider her a regular. She’s always been a significant part of the show from the first season on.

In other casting news, however, the show is adding a new face – Mary Steenburgen (via TV Line):

Little more is known about what role she’ll play, but we’ll find out soon enough, I’m sure. TV Line does say it will be a recurring role.

Steenburgen has won both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for her role in Melvin and Howard. Her recent television work has included Justified, 30 Rock, Bored to Death, Robot Chicken, Wilfred, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

If the filming of Orange is the New Black: Season 3 is anything like that of Season 2, you can probably expect to see quite a few photos from the set on the official Instagram account.

  • Vincent D’Onofrio Is Kingpin In Netflix’s Daredevil Series

Vincent D’Onofrio Is Kingpin In Netflix’s Daredevil Series

Marvel and Netflix announced on Tuesday that Vincent D’Onofrio will play Wilson Fisk, otherwise known as Kingpin, in Marvel’s Daredevil, which will debut on Netflix next year.

We recently learned that Charlie Cox from Boardwalk Empire will be taking on the titular role.

D’Onofrio is known for such memorable roles as Private Pyle in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket, that crazy guy from The Cell, and Detective Robert Goren from Law & Order: Criminal Intent, among many other things.

“D’Onofrio will play Wilson Fisk, a powerful businessman whose interests in the future of Hell’s Kitchen will bring him into conflict with the blind attorney Matt Murdock and his alter ego Daredevil,” says Marvel.

“We’re incredibly proud to have an actor with the gravitas and versatility of Vincent joining ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ in such an integral role,” said Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television. “Wilson Fisk is an iconic villain whose cunning and power make him the dangerous equal of our hero.”

The character was portrayed by the late Michael Clarke Duncan in the much beloved Ben Affleck movie.

  • Netflix Adds Post-Play Feature To Android

Netflix Adds Post-Play Feature To Android

It’s not very often that Netflix launches actual new features. It tends to focus more on content (which is generally fine), but Android users now get a feature that users of some other devices have had for a while – Post-Play.

Netflix first launched Post-Play in 2012. What it does is queue up the next episode in a series as you finish one, making it easier to just keep on binge watching (which has become a big part of television viewing culture with Netflix’s help).

In a blog post late Friday, Netflix said:

At Netflix we’re very focused on making it easier to enjoy more TV shows and movies. If you use Netflix on Playstation 3, our website or a number of other devices, you may already be familiar with the “Post-Play” feature. Today we added this feature to our Android app making it even easier to watch more on additional devices.

“Post-Play” works for both TV shows (phones and tablets) and movies (tablets only). At the end of an episode, we will automatically queue up the next one and start playback unless you choose to pause or stop. For movies, we will offer three recommendations to try next. You can dismiss “Post-Play” by simply tapping on the video.

The release happened to correspond with the debut of Orange is the New Black: Season 2. If you were watching it on Android, perhaps you noticed.

Netflix says Post-Play is coming to Chromecast in the coming months.

  • Netflix Releases ‘Hemlock Grove’ Season 2 Trailer

Netflix Releases ‘Hemlock Grove’ Season 2 Trailer

Now that Orange is the New Black’s second season has been released, Netflix is looking forward to the sophomore season of another of its originals. Hemlock Grove: Season 2 will debut on July 11th.

The company released the first real (and bloody) trailer for the forthcoming season, and for fans of the first season, it looks intriguing.

Netflix released a teaser in April, and a poster a couple weeks ago, but this is really the first look we’ve gotten at the actual season.

Executive producer Eli Roth recently had this to say, “I cannot wait for fans to see what’s in store for season two – it is going to blow away all expectations. Netflix has been an incredible partner, and whenever we wanted to take the story in a dangerous direction, they encouraged us to go even further – into a scarier, darker, and sexier place. We guarantee you won’t see anything like this anywhere else on television.”

From the looks of the trailer, it will live up to those words.

In 2013, Roth made similar comments, saying Season 2 would have “so many cool surprises”. The trailer would seem to confirm as much.

Netflix’s BoJack Horseman Has Its Own Geocities-Style Site

Earlier this week, Netflix released a trailer and release date for its upcoming original animated comedy BoJack Horseman. It comes out on August 22nd.

The show stars Will Arnett, Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie, and Aaron Paul. The description of the show is as follows:

Legendary star of the 1990s family favorite sitcom “Horsin’ Around,” BoJack (Will Arnett) has been trying to find his way through a muddle of self-loathing, whisky and failed relationships. Now, in the presence of his human sidekick Todd (Aaron Paul) and his feline agent and ex-paramour Princess Caroline (Amy Sedaris), BoJack is primed for his comeback and the over 40 million global members of Netflix will be able to chart his progress in excruciatingly real time when all twelve episodes of season one hit the service in mid 2014.

With this in mind, the show’s website makes complete sense. Paul points us to it from Instagram:

Paul writes, “Everyone please meet @BoJackHorsman. He’s an amazing guy and is one of my best friends. He is a washed up 90’s sitcom star from the popular TV series called Horsen Around. He’s going thru some issues at the moment including alcoholism, potty mouth, drugs and having a strange addiction to cotton candy. Learn more about him at bojackhorseman.com.
