  • Pauley Perrette Tweets Hair Dye Health Warning

Pauley Perrette Tweets Hair Dye Health Warning

NCIS star Pauley Perrette was recently hospitalized due to a severe allergic reaction to the black hair dye she uses. Now the 45-year-old actress has warned her fans of the dangers of hair coloring.

Perrette plays a goth-inspired forensic scientist named Abby Sciuto on NCIS, and keeps her hair jet black for the role. Perrette, a natural blonde, had been darkening her hair for roughly twenty years, without any serious issues. Though recently, the New Orleans-born actress developed a rash, along with severe swelling.

“The other half of my face had become twice the size of my head,” Perrette explained, and posted the following picture to Twitter while she was in the hospital on July 19:

Perrette warns of the perils of hair dye allergies:

Commenting on allergic reactions to hair dye, Perrette explained, “The most important thing to me is that anyone out there that dyes their hair, particularly black, you need to be aware of the symptoms.”

Jacob Offenberger, an allergist at Northridge Medical Center, said, “If you have hair dye, and the next day or the day after you start to have itchiness and you start to see redness or [an] eczema-type of lesion, it is telling that you that you are having an allergic reaction to that dying. If you would do nothing, the next time you do the hair dye, it’s going to get worse.”

Perrette experienced the same progression – six months before winding up in the hospital, she developed a rash on her scalp and neck, but ignored the symptoms.

Perrette says she is now researching natural hair dye and also looking into wearing a wig, and is back on the NCIS set with her fellow cast mates.

  • ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Creator Talks Casting Manson, Love

Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter discussed the casting of rock stars Marilyn Manson and Courtney Love for the seventh season of the hit FX motorcycle gang drama at the Television Critics Association Summer Tour in Beverly Hills.

Sutter commented, “I tend to do this every season, I like to do some casting that’s a little bit outside the box, you know, from Stephen King to David Hasselhoff – we try to do stuff that’s fun.”

Regarding Manson’s casting, Sutter explained, “Manson (and) I became friends with through some music buddies and he’s a huge fan of the show and that was him basically just wearing me down and we found a great role for him and he’s great.” Manson’s character is described by FX as a “white supremacist prison shot-caller who Jax [Charlie Hunnam’s character] uses to expand his power base.”

Commenting on his Sons gig, Manson said, “‘Sons’ has been such a big part of my life, as well as my father’s. So I was determined to make him proud by being involved in what will probably be remembered as the most amazing piece of television cinema. After all, the very heart of ‘SOA’ is about that relationship. So, now all I need is a motorcycle.”

Manson, born Brian Hugh Warner, also recently hounded Eastbound and Down creator Danny McBride for a spot on that show, and got his wish:

Regarding the casting of Courtney Love, Sutter said he doesn’t know Love too well, but they met a few times and she had expressed interest in being on the show. “And then, we had this role of a school teacher and I thought, ‘Who better than Courtney Love?’ and so it sort of fits into our parameters of Sons of Anarchy casting,” Sutter remarked.

Love will first appear in the fourth episode as Ms. Harrison, the pre-school teacher of main character Jax’s (Charlie Hunnam) eldest son Abel.

Sons of Anarchy season 7 premieres September, 9 at 10 PM ET/PT on FX.

  • Netflix Toys Around With Private Viewing

Netflix Toys Around With Private Viewing

Netflix is reportedly testing a new feature that would enable users to hide the titles they’ve been watching for fear of embarrassment.

Janko Roettgers at GigaOm shares this statement from Netflix’s Cliff Edwards:

“At Netflix we continuously test new things. In this case, we are testing a feature in which a user watching a movie or TV show can choose to view in “Privacy Mode.” Choosing that option means the program will not appear in your viewing activity log, nor will it be used to determine recommendations about what you should watch in the future.”

That bit about not using it for recommendations is probably as good a reason as any to provide users with such a feature. Even if you’re not trying to hide what you’ve been watching, you may want to keep some titles out of the pool of inspiration for what Netflix thinks you should watch in the future.

Maybe you have a guest over and watch something that you’d otherwise never watch in a million years, but don’t necessarily want to bother with a different profile. Just watch it in private mode, and don’t worry about it polluting your own. Of course, that might create an awkward situation between you and your guest.

Either way, Netflix might as well give people the option to view titles this way. It doesn’t seem like too much to ask for. It’s not as if they’re launching features all the time.

Authorities confirmed Garner’s identity with the help of his family members upon arrival. Details on the cause of death have not been released, though Garner did suffer a stroke in 2008, only weeks after his 80th birthday.

James Garner was born James Scott Bumgarner on April 7, 1928, in Norman, Oklahoma. He is remembered for his work on the big and small screen, in a career that spanned over five decades.

Garner starred in several television shows over the years, and was most notably featured as Bret Maverick in the 1950’s comedy-western series Maverick, and as Jim Rockford in the 1970’s police procedural The Rockford Files.

  • Gillian Anderson’s ‘Streetcar’ to be Broadcast Live

Gillian Anderson’s ‘Streetcar’ to be Broadcast Live

The rendition of Tennessee Williams’ celebrated play A Streetcar Named Desire starring Gillian Anderson as iconic character Blanche Dubois will be broadcast live worldwide on September 16th.

The play, also starring American actor Ben Foster as Stanley Kowalski, is the fastest-selling ticket in the history of the Young Vic Theater.

The NT Live program from the National Theatre is handling the September broadcast, which will air at 7 p.m. UK time (2 p.m. EDT).

Commenting on the play, Anderson said, “I’ve never seen a production where I felt I was a fly on the wall in New Orleans and I felt that that version of it would not only be exciting to perform, but the version that I’d want to see. I’d want to sit in that room and be hot and sweaty with the actors. And after I’d had that idea there was no changing my mind… I have completely fallen in love with Blanche and I was unprepared for that.”

A Streetcar Named Desire was penned by Williams in 1947, and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1948. The play opened on Broadway on December, 1947, and ran until December, 1949. The Broadway production was directed by Elia Kazan and starred Marlon Brando, Jessica Tandy, Kim Hunter and Karl Malden. The film version was directed by Kazan and starred Brando and Vivien Leigh.

Here is the 1951 Streetcar trailer:

Foster called the Young Vic production “a thrill. It’s very scary in the best way. There’s nowhere to hide.” The Lone Survivor actor added, “We’ve turned film into such an industry that we pursue naturalism just by shaking the camera, and cutting the film to ribbons to provoke a bogus sense of documentary. But we haven’t done the homework. To push the depth that the Actor’s Studio did or the Russian theatres did with their actors, is to rehearse, to spend time, to dig, to excavate. And that is what we are doing.”

  • Keke Palmer Passes on Whitney Houston Role

BET talk show Just Keke host Keke Palmer recently opened up about her interview with Chris Brown’s girlfriend Karrueche Tran, her admiration of Rihanna and why she turned down the lead role in a Lifetime Whitney Houston biopic.

Actress, singer, songwriter, dancer, fashion designer, philanthropist, entrepreneur, talk show host and activist Lauren Keyana “Keke” Palmer, 20, became the youngest talk show host ever, when Just Keke premiered on June 30.

During her Wednesday sit down with Palmer, Karrueche Tran, 26, breaks down while discussing the slings and arrows of dating a celebrity (Brown), who has an ex who is even a bigger celebrity (Rihanna), and what all of that means for her Twitter account.

Here is a clip from Palmer’s Tran interview:

Palmer later made it clear that her “dream” talk show guest is actually Rihanna, distancing herself from an association with the embattled Brown. “Rihanna is an individual,” Keke remarked, adding, “She represents everything that I believe in, which is being yourself and not allowing other people to change you.”

    The wisdom of Keke:

Keke also revealed why she decided against pursuing a Whitney Houston role in an upcoming biopic. “Initially, I was thinking about the Whitney Houston [biopic] … to play Whitney,” Palmer commented. “But I don’t know if that was a story that I wanted to tell, because the family’s not involved, and that’s a big part for me.”

“I think if you’re going to do a movie or biopic about someone, the family needs to be involved, because you want it to be as honest as possible. I think that was what didn’t really make me go out for it.”

No stranger for made-for-TV fare, Keke has appeared in three Lifetime original movies – Abducted: The Carlina White Story, CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story, and The Trip to Bountiful. Palmer has also starred in Akeelah and the Bee, Madea’s Family Reunion and Ice Age: Continental Drift.

  • Tea Leoni Returning to Televison, Gets OK from Kids

Actress Tea Leoni will be returning to the small screen to star as Secretary of State Elizabeth Faulkner McCord, in the CBS political drama Madam Secretary.

Madam Secretary, which will run after “60 Minutes” and before “The Good Wife” on Sundays, premieres on September 21. Leoni, 49, portrays a former CIA analyst turned college professor who is tapped by the president to become Secretary of State.

Commenting on her character McCord, Leoni told E!, “There was something – I adored her. I adored her by page two, there’s no sarcasm to her. Sarcasm is too slow. I want to wake up and be her every day.”

The former The Naked Truth star added, “I think in a lot of ways it’s inspiring to see women that we want to see. I think when I sort of set out to do this gal, I thought, ‘Who do I want in office?’ That’s been guiding my choices.”

Here is a first look at Madam Secretary:

Barbara Hall, who was a writer-producer for Judging Amy, and is presently a co-executive producer on Showtime’s Homeland, is the creator and executive producer of Madam Secretary, alongside Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman. Hall commented that former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright is excited about the series, and has met with Leoni. “She’s very eager to weigh in and help us,” Hall remarked.

Hall added that Madam Secretary is adapted from real events and will attempt to “pull back the curtain on how the State Department works.”

Leoni, who is presently separated from husband David Duchovny, said that her children gave her the “go-ahead” to get back into a television gig.

“I turned to my 12-year-old son and I said, ‘It’s going to be a little tricky. I’m not going to be around as much. Are you cool with that?’” Leoni said, adding, “He said, ‘Yeah, I was getting kind of sick of you.’”

Madam Secretary also stars Tim Daly and Bebe Neuwirth.

  • Charlie Sheen Wasted at Taco Bell Drive-Thru

While sitting in his car awaiting his “fourth meal”, Taco Bell customer Jayden Blair had a chance encounter with a riotously besotted Charlie Sheen, who a emerged from behind some bushes, after Blair yells “she’s a big fan” and points to his passenger.

Sheen introduced himself as Charlie in a gravelly voice, and exclaimed, “Sorry I’m so fucking hammered.” With his eyes barely open, an affable Sheen says it’s “awesome” to meet the two.

When Blair goes in for a fist bump, Sheen recoils a bit, and asks, “You guys want to fight?” Apparently joking, Sheen goes in for the fist bump. The actor proceeds to show off a couple of tattoos, one of which appears to be Charlie Brown. The other one is a Cincinnati Reds logo.

    Here is the video clip:

Sheen says “Go Reds!,” and then explains to Blair that his driver’s name is Gary. Gary tells Sheen it’s time to roll, and Sheen tells Gary, “No, we’re fine, we’re fine.”

Sheen, just as famous for his impaired antics as he is for being an actor, producer and winner, then took off with his fourth meal, leaving Blair with a story to tell, and a Youtube clip that is going viral.

Sheen, born Carlos Irwin Estevez, has amassed a fortune of roughly $125 million, and was once the highest paid actor in television during his stint on Two and Half Men. After having a much-publicized meltdown, the tiger blood enthusiast was fired from the show by Warner Bros. and CBS in March, 2011, and was replaced by Ashton Kutcher.

Sheen now stars on the FX comedy series Anger Management, and has been keeping his ideals he’d described during his My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat is Not An Option spoken word tour he’d embarked upon after being let go by CBS to himself.

  • Hulu Scoops Up South Park For Subscription Service

Hulu Scoops Up South Park For Subscription Service

Hulu announced that it is now the exclusive home for all seasons of South Park. If you’ve grown to love South Park Studios, the show’s website, which has offered every episode for years now, you’re in for some changes.

Hulu and South Park Studios announced a multi-year licensing agreement that will see all South Park episodes coming to Hulu Plus. The bad news for fans is that Hulu Plus is a paid service, whereas all episodes have always been free on the South Park Studios site.

All episodes will be free on Hulu before the start of South Park’s 18th season on September 24th, at which point Hulu Plus subscribers will have exclusive access. Once the season premieres, Hulu Plus users will have access to each new episode the day after it airs. Also at that point, both Hulu and the South Park Studios site will have a revolving selection of free episodes available – a major step down from the entire catalog as historically offered on the South Park site.

Here’s what Matt Parker and Trey Stone had to say about it (yep, that’s how they’re named on the new Hulu-powered South Park blog – not sure if it’s just a mistake or if they’re trolling us):

“This is a natural partnership for us. We are excited that the entire library will be available on Hulu and that the best technology around will power South Park Digital Studios.”

That does indeed sound like something Matt Parker and Trey Stone might say.

Hulu’s SVP and Head of Content Craig Erwich writes in a blog post:

This show has revolutionized TV and it has consistently remained a top 10 most-watched show on Hulu.

Here’s a look at some more recent additions to Hulu.

  • Netflix Is Getting ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ In The U.S.

Netflix Is Getting ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ In The U.S.

Back in March, Netflix announced that it acquired Robert Rodriguez’s From Dusk Till Dawn series for international streaming, as it debuted on El Rey Network in the U.S.

Today, the company announced that it will make Season 1 available to streaming customers on August 19th.

The show is, of course, based on the film Robert Rodriguez made with Quentin Tarantino in the 90s, starring George Clooney and Tarantino himself.

While this won’t play as a Netflix Original, at least here in the U.S., the company has said that it wants to offer more original horror. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cindy Holland, head of original content, said:

Although Hemlock covers horror and supernatural to some extent, there are several subgenres within those categories that we haven’t reached into yet and would look to explore if the right project came along.

The second season of Hemlock Grove debuts on Friday.

Last year, Netflix originals got three awards – all for House of Cards (Director, casting, and cinematography). House of Cards has some pretty stiff competition again this year as shows like Breaking Bad, True Detective, and Game of Thrones are all in the mix.

Orange is the New Black was not eligible last year, as it was released too late. As expected, the show has added a great deal to Netflix’s presence this year. Hemlock Grove was present for Netflix in last year’s nominations, as was Arrested Development. This year’s Hemlock Grove season doesn’t even debut until Friday, and who knows when we’ll get another season of Arrested.

  • Chromecast Lets You Mirror Your Android Screen To The TV

Google announced at Google I/O a couple weeks ago that it would bring Android screen mirroring to the Chromecast later in the summer. Apparently later is now.

Google announced the launch of the feature today, enabling Android smartphone and tablet users to mirror their screens on their televisions using Google’s $35 Chromecast device. Google says in a blog post:

Chromecast makes it easy for you to enjoy your favorite entertainment on the biggest screen in the house. Starting today, you can mirror your Android phone and tablet to the TV so you can see your favorite apps, photos or anything else, exactly as you see it on your mobile device—only bigger. To start mirroring, simply select “Cast Screen” from the navigation drawer in the Chromecast app and select your Chromecast device. On Nexus devices, this feature is also available through the quick settings menu.

“Now, anything on your Android device will appear on the TV,” says Google’s Ambarish Kenghe. “You can share photos stored on your phone with a group of friends, or scope out the scenery for your next family vacation together on the big screen using Google Earth.”

The feature is rolling out over the course of the next few days. It requires the 1.7 update of the Chromecast app, which will be hitting Google Play, as well as one of the following Android devices: Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 10, Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy, S4 (Google Play Edition), Samsung Galaxy S5, Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Samsung Galaxy Note 10, HTC One M7, HTC One M7 (Google Play Edition), LG G3, LG G2, LG G Pro 2.

Google does say it will support more devices soon.

  • Courtney Love Cast in ‘Sons of Anarchy’

Courtney Love Cast in ‘Sons of Anarchy’

Actress Courtney Love is set to appear in the 7th and final season of the FX biker gang drama Sons of Anarchy. Love will first appear in the fourth episode as Ms. Harrison, the pre-school teacher of main character Jax’s (Charlie Hunnam) eldest son Abel.

This will be the television drama debut for Love, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for her work on 1995’s The People vs. Larry Flynt. The Hole frontwoman’s character takes a special interest in Abel, which will likely cause conflict with Abel’s mother Wendy, played by Drea de Matteo.

Courtney Love has been in the news of late due to the 20th anniversary of former husband and Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain’s suicide in 1994, as well as for Nirvana’s recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Love has been somewhat of a polarizing character for legions of Nirvana fans, with some who believe she may have “Yoko’d” Cobain. A note in which Cobain bashes Love as a charlatan was revealed in April.

Here is Love’s 2014 single You Know My Name:

Performance artist Marilyn Manson has also signed on for Sons season 7, and will play a recurring role as a white supremacist. Commenting on his role, Manson said, “‘Sons’ has been such a big part of my life, as well as my father’s. So I was determined to make him proud by being involved in what will probably be remembered as the most amazing piece of television cinema. After all, the very heart of ‘SOA’ is about that relationship. So, now all I need is a motorcycle.”

In related news, back in March, Love revealed that she had solved the mystery of Malaysian Airlines Flight 370. Using a satellite imagery map called Tomnod, the rocker was able to extrapolate the exact whereabouts of the missing jet, and posted her findings on Facebook:

“I’m no expert but up close this does look like a plane and an oil slick. Prayers go out to the families #MH370 and its [sic] like a mile away Pulau Perak, where they ‘last’ tracked it 5°39’08.5″N 98°50’38.0″E but what do I know?”

  • Sarah Palin: The Newest Edition To The View?

Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin has hinted that she may want to join ABC’s morning talk show The View.

Last month, Sherri Shepherd and Jenny McCarthy announced that they would not be returning to the show, leaving room for new hosts to take their spot at the round table.

“I hear everyone recently got canned from The View, maybe a show like that needs a punch of reality and a voice of reason from America’s heartland to knock some humble sense into their scripts,” Palin told The Hollywood Reporter. “You know, someone willing to go rogue.”

Palin, who is no stranger to television, also suggested that she may like to have her own political talk show. “Maybe,” she said, when asked about the possibility of having a show either on television, radio, or the Internet. “But the politics would have to be interspersed with a whole lot of fun and real life and inspiration showcasing American work ethic, because those topics are all pretty much the antithesis of today’s politics, which I find incorrigibly disastrous!”

“It’d be so much fun to shake it up taking on issues that make audiences objectively consider all sides, and I’d do it with my own real-life groundedness, candor and commonsense that I’m known for,” Palin added. “Media needs that today, versus the condescension that oozes from TV and radio.”

Barbara Walters announced that she will be retiring and will not be returning to the show, leaving Whoopi Goldberg the only current host coming back for the new season. Different names have been tossed around as possible hosts including Rosie O’Donnell and Mario Cantone.
