  • Sony Says Games Are Central To Its Overall Vision At CES

The Consumer Electronics Show is not usually a place where you expect to see games. It’s a show that’s usually focused on the biggest things in tech that aren’t games. Sony bucked that trend just a little bit this year by focusing on its PlayStation brand during its press conference, including the announcement of PlayStation Now.

What made Sony’s presence at CES more interesting than usual, however, was how it singled out its gaming operation as the inspiration behind its latest comeback strategy. At CES, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai said that the company was working to deliver “wow” moments to consumers. Those “wow” moments are apparently best represented by games.

Of course, no other Sony studio makes gamers say “wow” more than Media Molecule. The developer helped usher in an era of user-created content on PlayStation 3 with LittleBigPlanet and LittleBigPlanet 2. They also gave the Vita a shot in the arm with 2013’s Tearaway. As part of Sony’s presser, Kaz invited Media Molecule to elaborate on their creative process.

  • Tearaway Gets A Delightful Launch Trailer

Have you been playing your PlayStation Vita lately? That’s probably a no, but Sony thinks you’ll want to dust off its handheld with the release of Tearaway this Friday.

To celebrate the impending launch of what may be the most delightful game of the year, Sony has released a launch trailer for Tearaway that’s full of color, happiness and everything else that makes video games the unique medium that they are.

Sony notes that those who pre-order the title will receive a number of goodies to use throughout their adventure in the paper-filled world of Tearaway. The offer is good for all retail pre-orders or for those who buy a digital copy in the game’s first week of release.

As an added bonus, Sony will also be releasing a free trial of Tearaway on Friday. Upon downloading the free trial, you’ll be able to purchase the full version from within the game. It’s a strategy that Sony hopes will convince people to buy one of the most creative video games to launch in 2013.

  • This Tearaway Trailer Will Make You Want To Work At Media Molecule

When kids are growing up, they envision game development studios as places where people are free to do what they want as they work on a game. That couldn’t be further from the truth for most studios, but it does seem to a pretty apt description of Media Molecule.

Sony’s Media Molecule – the studio behind LittleBigPlanet and upcoming Vita platformer Tearaway – is the subject of a new video that goes behind the scenes at the game development studio. It’s a fascinating look at the kind of open work environment the employees enjoy as they’re free to engage in what could best be described as mini-Game Jams.

Some of the best games of the past few years have come from indie development studios that encourage the kind of experimentation and creativity that led to the creation of games like LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway. Now, that kind of work environment could have been replaced by the design by committee workplace that’s seen so often in big game studios these days. It just adds another reason to be thankful that Sony didn’t implement such drastic changes when it acquired the studio a few years ago.

If you want to see the results of Media Molecule’s efforts, you’ll be able to pick up Tearaway on November 22. The game is exclusively available for the PlayStation Vita, and it was built with the platform specifically in mind from the looks of it.

  • Media Molecule Says Tearaway Only Possible On PS Vita

With all the next gen excitement over the next two weeks, it’s easy to forget a number of excellent games will be hitting other platforms as well. Nintendo has Super Mario 3D World and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds on November 22, and Sony is releasing Tearaway for the PS Vita on the same day.

In a new trailer for Tearaway released today, the team at Media Molecule touch upon developing for the PS Vita and why Tearaway is such a perfect match for the handheld.

While many will be playing either the PS4 or Xbox One come November 22, Vita owners will be enjoying what may be the most charming game of the year. After all, what other game will teach players how to make papercraft models?

Tearaway launches on November 22 exclusively for the PS Vita.

  • Tearaway Gets A Community Site Dedicated To Papercraft

Media Molecule revolutionized user created content with LittleBigPlanet by offering players the tools required to make their own levels. With its next game, Tearaway, the studio wants to change the meaning of user created content.

In the latest trailer for Tearaway, the team announced that it will be opening a new community portal at tearaway.me. The team notes that everything in Tearaway can be made from a single sheet of paper, and that the site will be used to encourage players to make the things they see in-game. The site can also be used to share your own papercraft plans with other players around the world.

LittleBigPlanet encouraged all of us to be more creative and think outside the box when it came to game and level design. Now Tearaway is looking to do the same thing, but with physical objects. Papercraft has been popular with gamers for a while now, and this game may just get more people into one of the most unique craft hobbies on the planet.

  • Here Are Sony’s Two Big Vita Titles For 2013

The Vita may be struggling, but the recent price cut may just help it survive into the next year. Of course, price isn’t everything as games are equally, it not more so, important. That’s why Sony has enlisted dozens of indie developers to make games for the device, but its own in-house studios are busy making games for the Vita as well.

At Gamescom, Sony showed off more footage from two of the most promising Vita titles of 2013 – Killzone: Mercenary and Tearaway. The first is Guerilla’s attempt to shrink down the Killzone experience and keep it fully intact on the Vita. The second is a delightful platformer from Media Molecule that uses the Vita’s unique features to the fullest.

In Killzone: Mercenary, players take on the role of a mercenary with no loyalties. That means you’ll be completing missions for both the ISA and Helghast all for a bit of cash. The game promises to be the first shooter for the Vita that really feels like a shooter, unlike the disappointing Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified. If the recent public beta is any indication, I’d say Guerilla Cambridge has something pretty special on its hands.

As for Tearaway, it’s a whimsical platformer from the team that brought us LittleBigPlanet. Players take on the role of a small messenger that has to navigate its way through a world made out of paper. The player can directly interact with the world through the use of Vita’s numerous features, including the back touch pad.

Killzone: Mercenary will be released on September 10, and Tearaway will be released on November 22. Both titles represent the best Sony has to offer on the Vita, and it may just be enough to spur sales of the struggling handheld.

  • Tearaway Could Be Just What The Vita Needs

It’s no secret that the Vita is performing poorly in the West. The expensive handheld from Sony is a wonderful machine, but its hist cost of entry and lack of software make it an unattractive option for gamers looking for sophisticated experiences on the go.

Sony is hoping to at least remedy the software problem in 2013 with a number of high-profile releases. One of the more interesting, and charming, games to come out of Sony’s initiative is Tearaway, a new action/adventure game from Media Molecule. PlayStation fans have come to know and love Media Molecule for its LittleBigPlanet franchise, and now its bringing a new kind of game to the Vita.

Tearaway will be available exclusively on the PlayStation Vita on October 22. Physical copies of the game will feature reversible cover art for those want to display the female protagonist on the box.
