  • World Cup Gear: U.S. Team Jerseys Still Not Made In America

In 2012, Ralph Lauren received backlash regarding the uniforms he designed for U.S. team to wear during the opening ceremonies at the Summer Olympics. People said that the beret was “too European” while others said that the athletes looked like chic crossing guards. However, the main reason the designer faced criticism was that the uniforms were made in China.

“Why shouldn’t we have pride not only in the American athletes but in the American manufacturers and laborers who are the backbone of our country,” fashion designer Nanette Lepore asked.

The 2012 incident was not the first time the designer found himself in hot water. In 2008, there were reports that Lauren’s uniform for the Beijing Olympics were also manufactured in China.

After the backlash, Lauren committed to making the uniforms for the 2014 Winter Games in the USA. In a statement, the company said, “Ralph Lauren promises to lead the conversation within our industry and our government addressing the issue of increasing manufacturing in the United States.”

Now, the World Cup is fast approaching and Nike soccer uniforms are available to the public. Many would think that the 2012 incident with Ralph Lauren wouldn’t happen again. However, the uniforms are still being made outside the U.S.

According to reports, the Nike soccer uniforms including dri-fit shirts, t-shirts, and polo shirts were made in Sri Lanka, Honduras, Vietnam, and Turkey. People are now wondering whether it’s really that difficult or expensive to have the uniforms manufactured in the good ole’ U.S. of A.

Well, for soccer fans who aren’t opposed to buying imported World Cup gear, Nike offers a wide array of caps, shoes, jerseys and the shirts for all 32 teams competing in this years event.

This year, Brazil will host the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The event is set to kick off on June 12, Thursday, and will run through July 13, Sunday.

  • USA Sochi Uniforms: Made In America

USA Sochi Uniforms: Made In America

The uniforms that Team USA will wear during the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games to be held next month in Sochi, Russia, have been unveiled.

Designed by Ralph Lauren, the new Olympic uniforms are brimful of stars and stripes with lots of red, white and blue.  Take one look at the team’s outfits and there is absolutely no mistaking what country is being represented. As usual, Ralph Lauren managed to give the clothing a classic look that many would identify as pure Americana.

The new uniforms have also attracted a lot of reaction from the public but not everybody seems to like them.

USA hockey team member Julie Chu was more approving. In her opinion the outfits underline the patriotic spirit of the United States.

“What I really enjoy when [I] look at it is I can see the patriotic spirit. When everyone’s wearing it together, it makes a bold statement.” Chu said.

Speaking of patriotism…Ralph Lauren Corp wised up this year by not making the uniforms in China like it did for the ones worn in the Summer Olympics. This year the clothes will have a Made in America label as they have all been produced locally.

The patchwork cardigan outfits were made with wool from Oregon and spun in North Carolina and Pennsylvania. It was then knitted in California.

With the American flag at the center of the uniform, it also features conspicuous Olympic rings and big stars. Underneath, you’ll see a cream cotton turtleneck, black leather boots and white athletic pants. The designer also threw in a wool “reindeer hat”. Of course the hat is red, white and blue too, with braided tassels.

In a statement delivered Thursday, the company said: “A dynamic mix of patriotic references in a classic color palette of red, white and navy defines the Ralph Lauren 2014 Team USA Opening ceremony uniform, which is proudly Made in America.”

  • LeBron James Likely Done With Team USA

LeBron James, considered by many to be the best basketball player in the world, is unlikely to play for the United States basketball team again, at least on paper.

James has already declined to join the team for the World Championships in 2014, which makes it all the more likely that he will not participate in the 2016 Olympics. That would mean it would be 2018 before he could play in the Worlds and 2020 before the next Olympics would roll around.

James will be 30 in 2018. Not that 30 is technically old, even by NBA standards, but there is his life outside of basketball and extending his career to consider. His two sons will be approaching their teenage years at that point, and considering that he entered the league as a teenager himself his odometer will have plenty of miles on it by then, especially if he keeps leading his team to the finals year after year. The call of family and taking care of his body in order to play in the league longer will more than likely prove too strong.

While it may be disappointing to some that arguably the best player in the world would no longer be representing the US, it is not as if he has not already done his duty. James already holds two olympic golds and a bronze, as well as a bronze at the World Championships and a gold in the FIBA Americas tournament. In the end, NBA immortality and time with his sons will probably trump climbing the same international mountain again.

Of course, this is all speculation. With his freakish athleticism James could very well win another Olympic gold and several NBA champioships; it just depends on his mood.

As for Team USA, they will just have to settle for the best players in the world not named LeBron James. All things considered, they should be just fine.

  • Mike Krzyzewski Done With Team USA, Twitter Reacts

It appears that after seven years of coaching the Team USA basketball team, Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski (otherwise known as Coach K) will not be coaching it any longer.

Krzyzewski said on ESPN’s Mike & Mike in the Morning, “I’ve loved, loved, loved, and it’s been an honor being with the USA Basketball team. And to coach the team and work with [chairman and president Jerry Colangelo] for seven years has been marvelous.”

In 2005, Krzyzewski was appointed coach. His record as head coach of the USA National Team was 62–1. His team got four golds in all (FIBA Americas Championship 2007, 2008 Summer Olympics, the 2010 FIBA World Championship and the 2012 Summer Olympics) and one bronze (2006 FIBA World Championship).

Here’s what people are saying on Twitter:

  • USA vs. Spain: American Team Walks Away with an Exhibition Victory

USA vs. Spain: Although both basketball teams are considered to be the best in the world at the moment, Team USA walked away with the victory during an exhibition game on Tuesday. The final score: 100-78. However, the real showdown between the two titans will take place on August 12th, which, of course, will be played for the gold medal.

During the game, Carmelo Anthony scored 27 points, 23 of which took place during the first half. LeBron James, meanwhile, managed to snag an impressive 25 points, while Kevin Durant scored 13. “It was a good test for us tonight, but the exhibition games are over, the friendlies are over and we look forward to the real challenge of going to London,” James explained.

The importance of this particular match wasn’t lost on Team USA’s players. “We knew that this was a big game,” US guard Chris Paul told the Associated Press. ”When Coach K talked to us, he told us this was probably the biggest game here in Barcelona since the `92 team was here, so we approached it like that and it was a good win for us.”

Although the Spain’s players explained they fully intended to give it their all during the game, they did state that preparing for the London games was much more important than bringing home an exhibition win. Paul Gasol, who scored 19 points during the game, claimed that his team could have done better against their American opponents.

“We made too many mistakes which they capitalized and they played their game,” he said. “They’re a quick unit, very athletic and once they were able to convert a few fast-break opportunities due to our turnovers, it was hard for us.”

Spain wasn’t the only team that learned some valuable lessons during the match. Although Kobe Bryant feels Team USA’s chances of bringing home the gold is very good, he admitted that playing against both Argentina and Spain helped them iron out some wrinkles in their strategy.

“I think it showed us some things that we want to do differently, some things that we’re doing right, and I think because of it we feel pretty good about our chances,” Bryant said.
