  • Breakfast At Taco Bell: What They’re Saying

If there was ever a fast food restaurant absolutely no one associated with breakfast, it was Taco Bell.

Then came the news last month that the fast food chain was going to throw its hat into the breakfast ring with the likes of McDonald’s, Dunkin Donuts, and Subway.

On the upcoming Taco Bell breakfast menu will be such options as AM Crunchwraps, Cinnabon bites, and the curious “waffle tacos”. Coffee and orange juice will be available as breakfast beverages to go with the items.

Despite the rest of us having to wait about a week to find out whether these breakfast choices will be a big “yay” or “nay”, some lucky individuals were able to get an early sampling of the menu.

First up is the waffle taco with sausage, which features eggs and cheese wrapped in sausage that is in turn wrapped in a waffle. This is the highly talked about breakfast option that many are buzzing about.

    How does it taste?

The waffle is described by one reviewer as “bready” and “slightly” sweet and the sausage is said to be “well-seasoned”. The eggs are “fluffy”, but also flavorless. Nothing a bit of salt and pepper won’t fix I’m sure, however the world could do without flavorless eggs. Ick.

The cheese is meant to add a decadent touch.

It’s hard to tell whether or not the waffle taco will live up to the hype, but it sounds like it will at least taste about as well as you expect. There is syrup available to drench the item in for even more flavor.

The AM Crunchwrap is 660 calories by itself (the waffle taco is 370 calories), which makes it seem like a promisingly filling endeavor. The breakfast quesadilla is made up of hash browns, bacon, eggs, and cheese, all wrapped up in a grilled tortilla.

This is said to be the tastiest menu on the item, but that will remain to be seen. The reviewer noted that not all the cheese melted evenly, which could impact the reception by some palates.

Lastly there are Cinnabon bites to look forward to. These tender morsels come with icing on the inside. Yum! You get four in all, with a total calorie count of 310.

The first reviews of the Taco Bell menu seem to suggest that the company may be able to get a foot in the doorway to competing with other established fast food breakfast menus. But as with everything, customer satisfaction will likely vary.

The menu is set to make its national debut on March 27th.

  • Waffle Taco, a New Menu Item from Taco Bell, Will Launch Next Month

Waffle Taco, a New Menu Item from Taco Bell, Will Launch Next Month

It appears that McDonald’s breakfast menu will be facing more competition next month.

McDonald’s holds a reputation for being the pioneer of providing appetizing fast food breakfast in the morning. The Egg McMuffin is one of their most popular breakfast choices available to the public.

However, another fast food restaurant will soon embrace the early morning breakfast hours.

Taco Bell will be launching its breakfast Menu on March 27, which will include their most anticipated food item, the Waffle Taco.

The Waffle Taco is, well, what its name says it is.

Taco Bell has decided to take a waffle, fold it into a taco-shape, and pack it with sausage/bacon, cheese, and eggs.

Within the last several months, the food chain has reportedly tested out the item in 6,000 select store locations in the country. California, for one, has been one of those areas where the Waffle Taco has been sold as a limited-time special.

McDonald’s U.S. brand and strategy officer Kevin Newell is not sold on Taco Bell’s forthcoming breakfast menu. He believes that marketing would now be an even more tedious task for the taco food chain.

“I think they’re going to find that going into the breakfast business is not like what they’re accustomed to, in terms of marketing,” Newell said.

Taco Bell is reportedly “training existing workers, hiring more staff to cover morning shifts and buying new equipment.”

Taco Bell President Brian Niccole says that the food chain aims to rank second to McDonald’s.

“We can turn the breakfast conversation into a two-horse race,” he told the Associated Press.

Taco Bell’s breakfast hours will reportedly run until 11 a.m., an hour later than McDonald’s.

According to CBS News, here are the new breakfast items you can look forward to:

    • A.M. Crunch Wrap — scrambled eggs, a hash brown, cheese and bacon, sausage or steak in a flour tortilla.
    • Waffle Taco — a waffle wrapped around a sausage patty or bacon, with scrambled eggs and cheese, served with a side of syrup.
    • Bacon and Egg Burrito — Bacon, scrambled eggs and cheese wrapped in a flour tortilla
    • Sausage Flatbread Melt — A sausage patty topped with cheese wrapped in a flatbread and grilled.

  • Doritos Locos Tacos Chips Coming to Stores in April

Frito Lay seems to have discovered that its customers apparently enjoy tacos as well. Earlier this month, Taco Bell debuted its cool ranch Doritos-flavored Locos Tacos, continuing its Locos Tacos success.

This week, Frito Lay announced that Doritos Locos Tacos will soon become a flavor for Doritos chips. That’s right. The tacos at Taco Bell that have shells based on classic Doritos flavors will now themselves become “new” flavors of Doritos tortilla chips.

The Locos Tacos Doritos will come in either nacho cheese or cool ranch varieties, and both will also have “crunchy taco” chips in the bag as well, which will presumably hold the flavor of an entire Taco Bell taco. The flavors arrive in stores starting April 8:

Doritos is also holding a Twitter contest in which the winner will win a pallet (132 bags) of Locos Tacos Doritos:

  • Taco Bell Menu Items Are Gettin’ Fancy

Taco Bell has long been known as drunken delicacy–offering affordable tacos and burritos to late night eaters–and they are now acknowledging that perhaps they could add to their menu a bit. And while I love Nachos Bell Grande and chicken quesadillas as much as the next guy, I’m pretty down for some more choices. Taco Bell hasn’t done much to improve their menu over the years; sure, they’ve added a few limited-edition things (please, not the Doritos-shell taco. Let it stay a little longer) and given us a couple of side options (cheesy potatoes, anyone?), but for the most part they’ve stayed true to what’s worked for them for years.

All that will change this summer, however, when they roll out the new “upscale” Cantina Bell options created by chef Lorena Garcia. They’ll be a tad pricier, but will compensate by being bigger than standard Taco Bell fare. The new menu will include black beans, cilantro rice, citrus- and herb-marinated chicken and cilantro dressing; the comparisons to higher-end fast food chains Chipotle and Qdoba are running rampant, and perhaps Taco Bell is not immune to the long arm of the success of such businesses. Even a company that’s been around forever can go under when the right competition comes along.

But I don’t think Taco Bell has anything to worry about. Their fan base is rabid, particularly in connection to their late-night or overnight menu, and the other restaurants can’t compete with that.

For this upscale menu, Taco Bell is gonna introduce items like black beans and the food is gonna cost $5 gasp
