Taco Bell Breakfast Is No Contender

Well, it sounded good in theory. McDonald’s was going to get some more stiff competition for their title as reigning fast food breakfast king.

Once you see such a thing actually in writing, it all sounds kind of absurd. But there is, indeed, a market for eggs poured from a carton, artificially flavored pancakes, hydrogenated butter substitutes, and substandard coffee products, all handed out a window to you by a bleary-eyed liberal arts student.

    But I digress.

Taco Bell announced its aim to unseat McDonald’s. Taco Bell launched a commercial series that featured real-life guys named “Ronald McDonald” expressing their preference for Taco Bell as their fast food breakfast of choice.

The biggest hurdle that some saw to Taco Bell’s ambitions was how they would manage to get their service window times shaved down enough to make it worth the while of a morning commuter. It’s one thing to sit in a 10-minute Taco Bell line at 11:00 P.M. with a bunch of other college students out gathering munchies fodder for their buddies. It’s quite another to meet the efficiency expectations of the morning drive crowd, most of whom left home with just enough time to grab a McSomething and get to work under the get-fired wire.

Burger Business uncovered an interesting tidbit that might shed some light on the reality of Taco Bell’s breakfast ambitions. Taking aim at McDonald’s may have been the kind of bravado needed to keep Taco Bell’s campaign from being seen as a Johnny-Come-Lately also-ran. But it probably wasn’t substantial.

“Breakfast represents about 25% of the average McDonald’s sales and 45% for Hardee’s. What is Yum Brands’ target for Taco Bell’s breakfast? About 7%.”

All Taco Bell wanted to do was hit the 7% mark? Talk about the soft sell of low expectations.

Wendy’s had thrown its hat into the breakfast ring, once upon a time. The dropped out of that race because “it couldn’t make mornings work profitably and its target was $140,000 to $150,000 in breakfast sales per store. Taco Bell ought to be able hit $100,000, or $274 a day, from breakfast.”

While Taco Bell may get their 7% goal with ease, they certainly will pose little competition for McDonald’s.

Looks like Ronald McDonald got all dressed up for nothing.

  • Taco Bell Breakfast: Is It Better Than McDonalds?

Taco Bell said that they had plans to take over breakfast when they released their breakfast menu earlier this month and it appears that they may have done just that. Since they began serving their breakfast items, many other restaurants including Starbucks, Jack In The Box and McDonalds have added new items to their menus.

When Taco Bell released a commercial that showed several people named Ronald McDonald talking about how good their breakfast items are, they seemed to be calling McDonalds out. McDonalds didn’t seem too scared at first, but now that Taco Bell’s breakfast menu has become so popular, McDonalds is pulling out all the stops in order to keep their spot as the top fast food breakfast server.

McDonalds has created new commercials and is promoting their McGriddles in order to compete with Taco Bell’s waffle taco. The two breakfast items are somewhat similar, with both savory and sweet flavors. So the question is, which one is best?

Many people have taken to twitter to voice their opinions. Some people claimed to love Taco Bell’s breakfast menu.

    Others, not so much.

In order to stay in the game, McDonalds has started offering free coffee with the purchase of a breakfast item and are even considering serving breakfast all day. But will this be enough to help them continue to dominate other restaurants in the breakfast battle?

A recent survey conducted by consumer research group, YouGov’s Brand Index, asked 4,500 people how they felt about Taco Bell’s breakfast menu and how they feel about McDonald’s. They charted the results on their Buzz Chart and found that Taco Bell’s breakfast ratings went from 11% to 15%, while McDonald’s went from 11% to 9%.

Some analysts think the results could be due to the fact that Taco Bell’s breakfast menu is new. Sales and popularity could start to decrease as time goes on and people grow tired of the newness. Only time will tell which restaurant is offering the best breakfast items. For now, it looks like it’s only a matter of opinion.

Who do you think serves the best breakfast?

  • Taco Bell Breakfast Makes McDonald’s Step Up Ad Campaign

“Taco Bell breakfast” isn’t a phrase many of us thought we would be hearing as recently as a year ago, but now that it’s here, the new menu is pleasing customers and putting McDonald’s on edge.

The new early-morning menu–which includes a waffle taco and a crunchwrap–has forced the hamburger giant to beef up its ad campaigns, including offering up free coffee for the first two weeks of April. Now, they’re focusing on their popular McGriddle sandwiches as direct competition against the waffle taco, with ads featuring the tag line “Once you get a McGriddles, you’ll get it”. The marketing blast comes soon after Taco Bell released commercials featuring several men named Ronald McDonald who had fallen in love with their breakfast menu.

“This is Taco Bell’s way of saying that there’s a new breakfast player in town and there’s no better way to do that than to go after the king of breakfast by market share, which is McDonalds,” said Hayley Peterson of Business Insider.

A new survey indicates that consumers are digging the new menu options and are choosing them over McDonald’s; 33% say they would choose Taco Bell, while 24% would choose McD’s. 43% couldn’t choose.

“The initial indications are positive for Taco Bell,” Citi Research analysts wrote. “While this development is clearly not a positive for McDonald’s, it is still early and it may be possible for both McDonald’s and Taco Bell to continue to grow at breakfast at the expense of other competitors.”

Consumers have taken to social media to share their love of the new menu items, especially on Twitter:

McDonald’s isn’t the only restaurant adding new items to the menu; Starbucks and Jack In The Box have introduced new breakfast items in recent weeks, as well.

  • Free Coffee Is McDonald’s Response To Taco Bell Jab

Free Coffee Is McDonald’s Response To Taco Bell Jab

If you didn’t know, fast food chain Taco Bell just recently launched their breakfast menu, featuring waffle tacos, breakfast crunch wraps, etc.

Taco Bell had no interest in timidly tiptoeing into the ongoing fast food breakfast wars.

Instead they opted to fire a warning shot at a major rival: McDonald’s.

The fast food chain found actual men named Ronald McDonald and then had them sample the new Taco Bell breakfast menu.

Not to be mistaken with this Ronald McDonald, these guys of varying age and ethnic backgrounds simply possess a name that is famously associated with the McDonald’s mascot.

Taco Bell covered its rear from a potential lawsuit by adding tiny print near the end of the commercial that emphasized that the men were in no way affiliated with their competitor.

They just happen to be named Ronald McDonald and like the taste of their breakfast!

We already knew there was no way that the king of the fast food breakfast hill was going to allow a shot across the bow to go unanswered.

    However…was anyone predicting free coffee?

From March 31st through April 13th you can get a free small coffee if you come into McDonald’s.

Taco Bell doesn’t seem phased by the limited time offer. The company responded to the move on social media by saying, “We just launched the next generation of breakfast. It’s not a two-week promotion.”

The fact that McDonald’s moved to respond to Taco Bell’s new breakfast at all suggests that the company does see the newcomer as a serious potential threat to their business.

McDonald’s may have dubbed Taco Bell’s move into breakfast “imitation”, but it is the response by the veteran that should be flattering.

After all, if the new breakfast options from Taco Bell was visibly doomed, would McDonald’s have even bothered? Obviously not.

It’s safe to say the fast food breakfast wars are going to be anything but boring.

  • Taco Bell Breakfast: What’s On The Menu?

Taco Bell Breakfast: What’s On The Menu?

Taco Bell will start serving breakfast on Thursday and many people are excitedly awaiting it. Taco Bell is known for coming up with delicious new menu items and when they announced that they were planning a new breakfast menu, Taco Bell fans everywhere became both curious and nervous. So what will these new breakfast menu items be?

    Breakfast Taco
The Taco Bell breakfast tacos come in two varieties, sausage and bacon. Both come with eggs and cheese and all of the ingredients are melted together in a grilled soft taco.

    Breakfast Burrito
Taco Bell knows how to make a mean burrito and a breakfast burrito seems like a logical menu option. The breakfast burritos include sausage or bacon, scrambled eggs and cheese wrapped up in a warm flour tortilla. It’s the perfect breakfast for those on the go.

    Waffle Taco
This one may sound a little strange, but if you are into breakfast foods that are both savory and sweet, you will want to give it a try. Eggs, cheese and your choice of sausage or bacon are piled on top of a thick waffle and smothered in syrup. It’s a little messy, but very unique.

    A.M. Crunchwrap
If you like the regular crunchwraps, you might want to try the breakfast version. Eggs, sausage, hash browns and cheese are stacked on top of each other and wrapped in a tortilla. Every bite is a complete breakfast experience.

These new breakfast options are great with any of Taco Bell’s sauces. Taco Bell is also offering Tropicana orange juice, coffee and Cinnabon Delights for sale with their breakfast menu items.

  • Taco Bell Breakfast Menu to Launch on Thursday

If you’ve been anxiously awaiting the day that you can purchase breakfast, lunch, and supper from Taco Bell, the wait is almost over. After announcing plans to start offering breakfast last month, the Taco Bell breakfast menu will launch on Thursday, March 27 at participating locations.

Many Taco Bell customers are thrilled that the chain is finally offering breakfast, as competitors such as McDonald’s and Burger King have offered a breakfast menu for years. If you’re expecting to show up at Taco Bell and order some of the traditional fast food breakfast staples, such as biscuits and pancakes, then you may be disappointed, as Taco Bell is offering some menu items that you aren’t likely to find elsewhere. (And if you do know of another restaurant selling Waffle Tacos, then by all means, share.)

According to the Taco Bell breakfast menu posted on the company’s website, you can choose from items such as the Waffle Taco, Breakfast Burrito, and Cinnabon Delights. Taco Bell will also offer the A.M. Crunchwrap and A.M. Grilled Taco, which are breakfast versions of their traditional menu items.

Taco Bell hasn’t been slack on their advertising efforts and has been using Twitter to spread word of the new menu. If you noticed the hashtag #breakfastphone on Twitter lately, you can thank Taco Bell, as this is part of their breakfast menu campaign. Taco Bell sent 1,000 customers “Breakfast Phones” and all of the customers are getting secret, time-sensitive missions that involve tweeting about the phone using the hashtag.

The phone itself is nothing impressive–it’s just a prepaid Tracfone Samsung T404G–but the people selected to participate in the Breakfast Phone challenge have chances to win Taco Bell breakfast menu themed prizes such as Waffle Taco clothing and bedding. That sounds strange enough, but apparently strange works, as this is a pretty cheap method of advertising that has gotten plenty of attention.
