  • T-Mobile Lowering 5G Home Internet Price by $10 to $50

T-Mobile Lowering 5G Home Internet Price by $10 to $50

T-Mobile is making its 5G Home Internet even better, lowering the price from $60 a month to $50.

T-Mobile Home Internet is the company’s competitor to broadband and satellite internet. Users receive a modem/router gateway that relies on T-Mobile’s 5G and/or 4G towers to provide service. Most customers get anywhere from 35 to 115 Mbps download speed (this writer consistently gets 90 to 120 Mbps down, and 20 to 40 Mbps up).

T-Mobile has made a name for itself providing simple plans with taxes and fees included. The company is applying that same methodology to its Home Internet, setting itself apart from an industry that made a whopping $9 billion in fees alone in a single year.

“It’s almost hard to fathom that Americans paid ISPs over $9 billion in monthly fees in just one year,” said Dow Draper, Executive Vice President of Emerging Products at T-Mobile. “All that money is above and beyond what people already pay in service costs for something that’s never been more critical. It’s wrong, it’s unnecessary and we’re tackling it head on. Not only do we not charge ANY add-on fees, but we’re also making a change to our price, giving customers $10 off to make up for other ISPs’ long-held backwards practices. We’re bringing an affordable, reliable option to an industry in desperate need of change.”

With no data caps and broadband speeds, T-Mobile Home Internet was already proving to be a game-changer for users living in areas without traditional internet coverage. Add in no contracts and only $50 a month and the company’s service may be ready to take on traditional broadband on its home turf.

  • Dish’s Boost Mobile Announces Its Own 5G Device

Dish’s Boost Mobile Announces Its Own 5G Device

Dish Network’s Boost Mobile has announced the Celero5G, its own 5G device aimed at helping customers maximize their experience.

Dish Network acquired Boost Mobile as part of the T-Mobile/Sprint merger, when the latter companies were required to divest some of their assets in order to win regulatory approval. Dish has been working on rolling out its own 5G network, while it continues to piggyback on T-Mobile and AT&T’s network in the meantime.

The company is now offering its own 5G-enabled phone, the Celero5G. The phone has a 6.52-inch screen, 36 hours of battery life, four cameras, 4GB of RAM, 64GB ROM and SD card support for up to 2TB of additional storage.

“Our goal at Boost is to empower our customers with what they need, when they need it,” said Stephen Stokols, head of Boost Mobile. “Subscribers have told us loud and clear: they want speed, cool features, and a fair price. The Celero5G is built to make 5G affordable.”

  • Dish Taps 10x People to Manage Its 5G Phone Number Inventory

Dish Taps 10x People to Manage Its 5G Phone Number Inventory

Dish Network has selected 10x People, LLC to manage its 5G phone number inventory as the company builds out its 5G network.

Dish has been steadily working to deploy its 5G network, with a beta available at the end of September. The company is looking to become the fourth nationwide carrier, replacing Sprint after it was bought out by T-Mobile. The move is important for the company, providing it a way to diversify beyond its satellite TV business, especially as more consumers turn to TV streaming options.

As part of the process, Dish must have a way to manage its inventory of phone numbers, and is tapping 10x People to provide the solution.

“As we continue to build our innovative 5G network, 10x People will play a central role in our number management process as we track, monitor and report this important part of our inventory,” said Atilla Tinic, chief information officer, DISH. “10x People’s cloud-native solution will seamlessly integrate with our other OSS/BSS systems, extend our TN management capabilities as we roll out new areas of service, and serve as an innovative platform for the ongoing evolution of our subscriber identity management.”

“10x People is committed to helping connect end users to DISH’s fully-virtualized, first-of-its-kind network through telephone number solutions,” said Lisa Marie Maxson, CEO, 10x People. “Being selected as a TN management supplier by a technology innovator like DISH is an honor and speaks to our position as a leader in scalable numbering solutions for 5G networks.”

  • Bucking the Trend, T-Mobile Wants Employees In-Office In October

Bucking the Trend, T-Mobile Wants Employees In-Office In October

Unlike many tech companies, T-Mobile wants employees back in the office by October 15.

Many companies have postponed their initial plans to bring employees back into the office as a result of the Delta variant. Many companies have pushed their plans back to the beginning of 2022, while Microsoft has said it will stop projecting a return-to-office date altogether and simply let science and data dictate the date.

T-Mobile, on the other hand, only pushed its return-to-office date back by one month, and wants employees in the office — at least part time — no later than October 25, according to The Seattle Times. Even then, the company would like vaccinated employees to return sooner. The company has taken a number of steps to ensure employee safety and peace of mind.

“Because we’re taking this big step to ensure your safety at our offices, I’m also urging employees to stick to our planned September 20 or earlier date for returning to the office with your flexible resident or hybrid schedule,” Mike Sievert, T-Mobile CEO, said Aug. 31 in an internal email seen by The Seattle Times. “Our spaces are open and ready for you, and it is time to come back regularly.”

Employees of Apple, Google and other companies have pushed back on efforts to return to the office, especially when those efforts seemed premature. It remains to be seen how much T-Mobile employees will object.

  • New T-Mobile Icon Will Let iPhone Users Know Which 5G They’re Using

New T-Mobile Icon Will Let iPhone Users Know Which 5G They’re Using

T-Mobile is preparing to update the icon they display for iPhone users when they’re on 5G, showing them when they’re using the fastest flavors.

T-Mobile uses three different varieties of 5G: low-band for long-range, widespread coverage; mid-band for the best combination of speed and coverage; and mmWave for providing the fastest speeds in dense, urban areas.

Together, the mid-band and mmWave are what T-Mobile refers to as its Ultra Capacity 5G. Without doing a speed test, however, there has been no easy way to know which flavor of 5G a phone was using.

According to T-Mobile’s President of Technology, Neville Ray, the company is updating their 5G icon with a “UC” to indicate when the iPhone is connected to Ultra Capacity 5G.

The new icon will initially show up on iPhone 12 and 13 models, but will also rollout to Android devices in the near future.

  • UScellular Taps Nokia For Its 5G Standalone Core

UScellular Taps Nokia For Its 5G Standalone Core

UScellular has extended a contract with Nokia for the Finnish company to provide its 5G standalone core.

UScellular is a regional carrier in the US, and currently the fourth-largest in the country, behind Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T. Like most carriers, the company is rolling out its 5G network and has tapped Nokia for its rollout. Nokia will provide its AirScale radios, which will provide both high-speed mmWave and widespread low-band 5G.

“As we continue to expand and enhance our 5G network, we value the innovation and support that Nokia provides to help us deliver a superior wireless experience to our residential and business customers,” said Mike Irizarry, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, UScellular. “As we deploy 5G SA core, Nokia brings expertise, technology excellence and the right mix of hardware, software and services to meet our requirements for high performance and low latency.”

“We are thrilled to be selected by UScellular to deliver a full 5G experience to its customers,” said Ed Cholerton, President of Nokia North America. “Our 5G SA core and 5G radios provide not only new capabilities, scale, operational efficiencies, and revenue opportunities, but drive a far better user experience that customers expect. Working with UScellular to provide the core network function software and cloud infrastructure continues our momentum in the North American standalone 5G core market.”

The contract is a big win for Nokia as the company continues to fight for its share of the 5G market.

  • Deutsche Telekom Gains Larger Share of T-Mobile US

Deutsche Telekom Gains Larger Share of T-Mobile US

Deutsche Telekom is continuing its goal of direct control over T-Mobile US, increasing its stake in the carrier by 5.3%.

Deutsche Telekom is the largest shareholder in T-Mobile US, but comes up short of majority control. To bolster its share, Deutsche Telekom brokered a share-swap deal with Softbank. As the owner of Sprint, Softbank gained a stake in T-Mobile when the magenta carrier purchased its smaller rival.

According to Reuters, Deutsche Telekom and Softbank’s share-swap gives Deutsche Telekom an additional 5.3% stake in T-Mobile US, in exchange for Softbank taking a 4.5% stake in Deutsche Telekom.

Deutsche Telekom’s CEO Tim Hoettges wants to own a majority share of T-Mobile US, and this latest deal gets him to 48.4%. Hoettges’ ambitions are not surprising, given T-Mobile’s status in the US market. Once the undisputed underdog, the company has vaulted to the number two position and has a commanding lead in the US 5G market, a lead many experts expect it to maintain for years to come.

Separately, Deutsche Telekom sold T-Mobile Netherlands to private equity houses for $6.05 billion, shedding a non-core asset and further streamlining the company.

  • T-Mobile Beating Rivals in Workforce Diversity

T-Mobile Beating Rivals in Workforce Diversity

In addition to leading its rivals in 5G, T-Mobile also has the most diverse workforce among the major US carriers.

T-Mobile has been making strides on all fronts in recent years, buying Sprint, leapfrogging AT&T to become the number two carrier and has taken the lead in the 5G race. The company also boasts the most diverse workforce, according to The Seattle Times, with people of color accounting for 60% of its employees.

Speaking about the company’s progress, CEO Mike Sievert said racial justice and diversity have been major points of focus.

Over the last year, we focused heavily on our people and our culture. We guided teams through the significant shifts in our business and a pandemic-world, while witnessing protests for greater racial justice that took place across our country. We implemented measures to help employees manage the social, emotional, and economic stress of the pandemic while undertaking the important journey of uniting our company behind a new company vision, mission, and values. We also launched our five-year Equity In Action plan, which reflects our commitment to embed diversity, equity, and inclusion even more strongly in our company culture with ambitious programs to continue building diverse talent across our company to reflect communities we serve.

  • FBI: Cybercriminals ‘Targeting the Food and Agriculture Sector’

FBI: Cybercriminals ‘Targeting the Food and Agriculture Sector’

The FBI is warning that cybercriminals are targeting the US food and agriculture sector with ransomware attacks.

US businesses and agencies have increasingly been under attack from cybercriminal groups, both state-sponsored and profit-driven. JBS FoodsT-Mobile, Colonial Pipeline, the University of Kentucky and Kaseya are just a few of the major companies and organizations that have recently been attacked.

The worst may be yet to come, with the FBI warning that the food and agriculture sector is being specifically targeted.

The Food and Agriculture sector is among the critical infrastructure sectors increasingly targeted by cyber attacks. As the sector moves to adopt more smart technologies and internet of things (IoT) processes the attack surface increases. Larger businesses are targeted based on their perceived ability to pay higher ransom demands, while smaller entities may be seen as soft targets, particularly those in the earlier stages of digitizing their processes, according to a private industry report.

The FBI is asking for any information that may be of assistance.

The FBI is seeking any information that can be shared, to include boundary logs showing communication to and from foreign IP addresses, Bitcoin wallet information, the decryptor file, and/or a benign sample of an encrypted file.

The FBI reiterates that it does not encourage companies to pay a ransom, but recognizes that all options are on the table when a company is crippled and unable to do business as a result of an attack. Regardless of whether an organization agrees to pay or not, the FBI encourages victims to contact it as soon as possible so it can render assistance.

The FBI’s full notice is well worth a read, as it includes detailed mitigation efforts organizations should be taking.

  • T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert Apologizes for Hack

T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert Apologizes for Hack

T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert has issued a statement apologizing for the recent hack that compromised tens of millions of user accounts.

T-Mobile’s systems were compromised in mid-August, with a treasure-trove of personal data stolen and put online for sale. Depending on the accounts in question, the compromised information contained some combination of names, addresses, date of birth, phone numbers, IMEIs, IMSIs, SSNs and driver’s license/ID information.

CEO Mike Sievert has issued an apology to customers, calling the entire ordeal a “humbling” experience.

Attacks like this are on the rise and bad actors work day-in and day-out to find new avenues to attack our systems and exploit them. We spend lots of time and effort to try to stay a step ahead of them, but we didn’t live up to the expectations we have for ourselves to protect our customers. Knowing that we failed to prevent this exposure is one of the hardest parts of this event. On behalf of everyone at Team Magenta, I want to say we are truly sorry.

  • T-Mobile Takes Top Spot in PCMag’s Annual Speed Test

T-Mobile Takes Top Spot in PCMag’s Annual Speed Test

In PCMag’s annual test of the US wireless networks, T-Mobile has decisively taken the top spot for 5G service.

PCMag’s annual review involves sending its drivers across the country, covering more than 10,000 miles, and more than 30 cities and 6 different rural regions. This provides an opportunity to get real-world data, not only on the speeds each carrier offers, but also the degree of improvement over past years.

PCMag started off their Fastest Mobile Networks 2021 report with high praise for T-Mobile.

It’s T-Mobile’s year at last. The carrier’s new mid-band 5G network is the only nationwide 5G that’s markedly faster than 4G, earning T-Mobile its first-ever PCMag award for America’s fastest mobile network.

The report found that T-Mobile took the 5G crown in 24 of the cities and rural regions PCMag’s drivers tested. AT&T came in second with 8, and Verizon brought up the rear with two.

T-Mobile’s top download speed was 1,134.4 Mbps, with an average of 162.3, while upload topped out at 140.5, with an average of 28.1. AT&T’s max and average download speeds were 1,090.9 and 98.2, while its upload speeds were 89.5 and 21.1. Verizon’s download speeds were 2,216.7 and 93.7, while its uploads were 102.8 and 21.5.

One thing is clear from this report: T-Mobile has skyrocketed past its competition in just a year’s time, comparing the 2020 and 2021 data. The key to T-Mobile’s rise is the mid-band spectrum it acquired as part of the Sprint acquisition.

As we have written about many times on WPNmid-band spectrum is the sweet spot for 5G. High-band mmWave offers the absolute fastest speeds, but its paired with abysmal, almost useless range and building penetration. That’s why Verizon is able to clock the highest speeds in the test but, because Verizon bet so heavily on mmWave, its availability is equally abysmal. In fact, because mmWave requires so many repeaters and base stations to give any appreciable coverage PCMag found that Verizon’s mmWave availability in metro areas was only 3.27%, compared to 2.82% in 2020 — barely any measurable growth.

On the other end of the spectrum, low-band 5G — using spectrum in the same range as 4G LTE — provides outstanding coverage but little to no real speed benefit over 4G. That’s why in 2020 T-Mobile’s speeds were decidedly behind its two rivals, since T-Mobile’s early 5G investment was in a nationwide low-band network.

In contrast, mid-band spectrum offers the perfect blend of coverage and speed. With the Sprint merger complete, and T-Mobile rapidly rolling out Sprint’s wealth of mid-spectrum, the company has suddenly found itself firmly in the 5G lead.

Verizon and AT&T clearly have their work cut out, and PCMag’s report shows why both companies had to spend a fortune at the FCC’s spectrum auction to acquire the spectrum they need to catch up.

  • Data of 70 Million AT&T Customers for Sale Online

Data of 70 Million AT&T Customers for Sale Online

It’s been a bad week for wireless companies and their subscribers, with data for 70 million AT&T customers reportedly for sale online.

Just days ago T-Mobile acknowledged a data breach impacting tens of millions of users, the complete scope of which may still not be fully clear. According to Restore Privacy, a hacker is claiming to have the data of 70 million AT&T subscribers and is looking to sell it online.

In a statement to Restore Privacy, AT&T is denying the data came from its systems.

Based on our investigation today, the information that appeared in an internet chat room does not appear to have come from our systems.

The hacker maintains the data is, in fact, from AT&T. The hacker, known as ShinyHunters, is also a well known entity in the hacking community, with a long list of successful hacks against other companies, lending credence to the claims.

In the meantime, Restore Privacy got a look at a sample of the data and, while they could not confirm it came from AT&T’s systems, the data included a distributing amount of sensitive information. The data included names, social security numbers, phone numbers, addresses, email addresses and dates of birth.

  • Over 40 Million Customers Impacted by T-Mobile Data Breach

Over 40 Million Customers Impacted by T-Mobile Data Breach

T-Mobile has provided additional details from its investigation of its recent data breach, sharing that over 40 million people’s records were stolen.

Earlier this week, news broke that a hacker was trying to sell T-Mobile customer data online, data they claimed to have gotten via compromised T-Mobile servers. The hacker claimed the data contained names, addresses, social security numbers (SSN), driver license information, phone numbers and unique IMEI numbers.

After confirming a breach occurred, T-Mobile’s investigation has now shed light on the details. The company has confirmed that information for 7.8 million postpaid accounts was included in the stolen data, as well as over 40 million former and customers who had applied for credit. It’s unclear how much overlap there may be between the two groups.

The company says “some of the data accessed did include customers’ first and last names, date of birth, SSN, and driver’s license/ID information for a subset of current and former postpay customers and prospective T-Mobile customers.”

However, “no phone numbers, account numbers, PINs, passwords, or financial information were compromised in any of these files of customers or prospective customers.”

The company is taking steps to help protect those impacted, including providing two years of free identity protection via McAfee’s ID Theft Protection Service. The company also recommends all postpaid customer change their account PIN, and the company is offering Account Takeover Protection to make it harder for an imposter to hijack an account.

We take our customers’ protection very seriously and we will continue to work around the clock on this forensic investigation to ensure we are taking care of our customers in light of this malicious attack. While our investigation is ongoing, we wanted to share these initial findings even as we may learn additional facts through our investigation that cause the details above to change or evolve.

  • T-Mobile Confirms Data Breach

    T-Mobile Confirms Data Breach

T-Mobile has confirmed it has suffered a data breach following reports that information for 100 million customers is for sale online.

News broke yesterday that a hacker was trying to sell T-Mobile customer information. The hacker claimed to have gained access to T-Mobile servers, copying and backing up the data before he was locked out.

T-Mobile issued a statement saying they were investigating the claims, but the company has now confirmed the breach occurred.

We have determined that unauthorized access to some T-Mobile data occurred, however we have not yet determined that there is any personal customer data involved. We are confident that the entry point used to gain access has been closed, and we are continuing our deep technical review of the situation across our systems to identify the nature of any data that was illegally accessed. This investigation will take some time but we are working with the highest degree of urgency. Until we have completed this assessment we cannot confirm the reported number of records affected or the validity of statements made by others.

We’ll provide updates as T-Mobile does.

  • Hacker Boasts of Massive T-Mobile Data Breach, Company Investigating

Hacker Boasts of Massive T-Mobile Data Breach, Company Investigating

A hacker is claiming to have obtained data for some 100 million T-Mobile customers and is trying to sell it.

In a forum post online, a hacker claims to have compromised T-Mobile servers and made off with a treasure trove of customer data. While the post itself didn’t specify the company, Motherboard reached out to the hacker and received confirmation the target company was T-Mobile.

The data in question is allegedly full customer information, including names, addresses, social security numbers (SSN), phone numbers, driver license information and unique IMEI numbers. Motherboard was given access to a sample of the data and confirmed its validity.

It appears T-Mobile has closed the security issue that allowed the hackers access, but not before they copied the data and made multiple backups. The hacker(s) is trying to sell a subset of the data, composed of 30 million SSNs and driver licenses, for 6 bitcoin, or roughly $270,000. The rest of the data is being sold privately.

Motherboard reached out to T-Mobile and received the following statement:

“We are aware of claims made in an underground forum and have been actively investigating their validity. We do not have any additional information to share at this time.”

  • Dish’s 5G Network Will Be Available in Beta End of September

Dish’s 5G Network Will Be Available in Beta End of September

Dish Network has announced its upcoming 5G network will be available in beta at the end of September.

Dish has been working to build out its 5G network, intent on becoming the fourth major carrier in the US. The company received a major boost as a result of the T-Mobile/Sprint merger, when regulators forced the two wireless carriers to divest themselves of some assets to help Dish break into the market. Regulators were concerned about the impact on consumers from the market consolidating to three carriers instead of four.

After much anticipationThe Verge is reporting that Dish’s 5G service is now preparing to enter beta, with it available by the end of September. The company has previously committed to covering 70% of the US population by June 2023, so it certainly seems Dish plans to hit the ground running.

  • Virtual Reality Cadavers Poised to Revolutionize Medical School

Virtual Reality Cadavers Poised to Revolutionize Medical School

Fisk University, T-Mobile, HTC VIVE and VictoryXR are launching one of the first 5G-powered, virtual reality (VR) human cadaver labs.

VR is one of the more exciting technologies under development, with almost limitless applications in everyday life. Nashville, TN-based Fisk University sees VR as an innovative, and cost-effective, way to teach pre-med and biology students. The university is partnering with T-Mobile, HTC VIVE and VictoryXR to help create the experience.

“We’re combining the best aspects of virtual and in-person learning, and this is the future of education,” said Dr. Vann Newkirk, President, Fisk University. “Fisk University is emerging as a tech leader among colleges, and our effort to bring a virtual reality cadaver lab to campus exemplifies our commitment to provide students with a state-of-the-art education.”

VR will enable professors and students to study and interact with the virtual cadavers in ways that would never be possible in real-life.

Inside the lab, students will examine the internal organs of various human systems, and the professor can even remove the organs from the body and pass them around for students to hold and open. Students will have the ability to enlarge the organ to a size large enough where they can even step inside to better learn how it works. In addition to organ systems, the cadavers will also include complete skeletal and muscle structures.

Given the cost of purchasing real cadavers, the VR system will put Fisk University on equal footing with other schools.

“With this cadaver lab, our pre-med students will no longer need to rely on other universities for advanced anatomy and biology classes,” said Dr. Shirley Brown, Dean of Fisk University. “Virtual reality technology takes our university to a level equal to the most advanced schools in the country.”

Fisk University’s VR campus is just the latest example of what is possible with the burgeoning tech.

  • T-Mobile Shutting Down Sprint’s LTE Network Mid-2022

    T-Mobile Shutting Down Sprint’s LTE Network Mid-2022

T-Mobile has confirmed it will shut down Sprint’s LTE network, as the magenta carrier continues to absorb Sprint’s customers.

T-Mobile bought Sprint in 2020, catapulting the carrier into the number two position in the US market. The biggest benefit of the merger was Sprint’s treasure-trove of spectrum. T-Mobile wasted no time in shutting down Sprint’s legacy 5G network and deploying Sprint’s spectrum to improve its own network.

According to Light Reading, T-Mobile has now confirmed it will shut down Sprint’s 4G LTE network, effective June 30, 2022.

The news is not really a dire revelation, however, as T-Mobile revealed in its quarterly results that its network is already carrying 80% of Sprint customer traffic. In addition, over a third of Sprint customers have already transitioned to T-Mobile.

Freeing up Sprint’s LTE spectrum will be another big step in T-Mobile’s ongoing efforts to take on Verizon.

  • T-Mobile Delivers Record Q2, Raises Guidance

T-Mobile Delivers Record Q2, Raises Guidance

T-Mobile continued its assent in the US wireless industry, turning in a record-breaking Q2 and raising guidance across the board.

The magenta carrier added 1.3 million customers, and led the industry with 627,000 postpaid phone net additions, 2.5x more than last year. The company had $20 billion in revenue, a 13% growth year over year.

Net income came in at $978 million, 8x more than last year, representing earnings per share of $0.78. In contrast, analysts were expecting $19.34 billion, with $0.53 per share earnings.

T-Mobile also continued its 5G dominance, covering 305 million people and 1.7 million square miles with its Extended Range 5G. The company was quick to point out that this represents more coverage than Verizon and AT&T combined.

At the same time, T-Mobile’s Ultra Capacity 5G, with average speeds of 350 Mbps, covers 165 million people. The company says it is on track to cover 200 million by year’s end.

“Stellar postpaid customer gains and industry-leading service revenue growth translated into industry-best growth in profitability and cash flow, and drove another beat and raise quarter – all fueled by unprecedented synergies that only T-Mobile can deliver,” said Mike Sievert, CEO of T-Mobile. “As we capitalize on our 5G leadership, it’s increasingly clear that our unmatched network, outstanding value and customer-centric experiences are setting the Un-carrier apart from everyone else.”
