  • Global Warming Caused Mass Extinction 55 Million Years Ago, Shows Study

As politicians continue to debate climate change, researchers are hard at work trying to predict what humans can expect as the planet continues to warm. Even with plenty of research, the many variables involved in climate change make the future uncertain. What does seem certain, however, is that humans are ill-prepared.

A recent study published in the journal Paleoceanography has shown just how extreme the effects of rapid global warming can be. The study used chemical analyses and research on very small fossilized organisms (micropaleontology) to determine what happened to the Earth’s marine life during a global warming event in the past.

Researchers at Syracuse University found that a global warming event known as the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) lowered the amount of dissolved oxygen in the world’s oceans. This caused oxygen minimum zones (OMZs, ocean layers of low oxygen saturation) to grow, leading to a mass extinction of life in the Earth’s oceans. Climate scientists are studying the PETM, which occurred 55 million years ago and is similar to the warming seen today, to determine what the effects of modern climate change might be.

“Global warming impacts marine life in complex ways, of which the loss of dissolved oxygen (a condition known as hypoxia) is a growing concern,” said Zunli Lu, a coauthor of the study and an assistant professor of Earth sciences at Syracuse University. “Moreover, it’s difficult to predict future deoxygenation that is induced by carbon emissions, without a good understanding of our geologic past.”

Lu and his colleagues looked at microfossils of organisms known as foraminiferas to determine what Earth’s oceans were like during the PETM. They focused on a specific type of iodine that exists only in oxygenated water to estimate the ambient oxygen levels of the planet’s ocean water during that time, then compared that data to climate models of the PETM. The researchers found that OMZs likely expanded during the PETM, possibly foreshadowing the effects of modern climate change.

“By comparing our fossil data with oxygen levels simulated in climate models, we think OMZs were much more prevalent 55 million years ago than they are today,” said Lu. “Deoxygenation, along with warming and acidification, had a dramatic effect on marine life during the PETM, prompting mass extinction on the seafloor.”

  • Florida Gators Win SEC, Claim No.1 Overall Seed In NCAA Tournament

In a year where no team seems to be in control, the one thing that most people seem to agree on is the fact that the Florida Gators were the team that deserved the No.1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

Florida already had the No.1 ranking heading into the SEC Conference Championship Game this afternoon, and they hung on to beat Kentucky, although Kentucky is peaking at the right time, and did have a chance to upset.

The Florida Gators are on a better streak than any other team in the nation right now, and squeaked by after a late run from Kentucky to win 61-60. Florida is currently on a 26-game winning streak, and has an overall record of 32-2 on the season.

Florida is undefeated in SEC league play this year, and while they did not maintain an undefeated record for the entire season like Wichita State, due to their conference being stronger, the committee decided that their performance was more impressive.

To the surprise of some people though, Arizona, who held the No.1 spot for much of the regular season, jumped up to the No.2 spot, obtaining the second No.1 seed. The final No.1 seed went to Virginia, who defeated Duke today in order to win the ACC Tournament, in addition to being the ACC champion of the regular season.

During conference tournament week, some of the top teams such as Syracuse and Villanova fell early, and were unable to continue playing. However, other teams like Providence were able to advance to the championship of the Big East, where they upset Creighton, who was playing in the Big East tournament for the first time after leaving the Missouri Valley Conference.

The Florida Gators have been placed in the South region in order to have home-court advantage, and will play their first two games in Orlando. They will play their first game on Thursday, and will find out their opponent after St. Mary’s (16-16) and Albany (18-14) finish their game on Wednesday.

If Florida wins their first game, they will be playing the winner of the #8/#9 match-up between Colorado and Pittsburgh. Other top teams that Florida could have trouble with on their way to the final four include Syracuse, Kansas, UCLA and Ohio State.

  • Wichita State Basketball Improves To 34-0, Wins MVC

It probably was not something that anyone had expected entering the 2013-2014 NCAA basketball season, but the Wichita State basketball team was able to keep their streak going, and finish the season without losing.

Due to the fact that the Wichita State Shockers play in a mid-major conference, they have not been given a No.1 ranking all season, despite being the only undefeated team, but have recently grabbed the No.2 spot. However, some would argue that they still deserve the ranking, and the No.1 seed in the NCAA tournament, which will be determined on Sunday.

Wichita State had clearly made the tournament heading into their championship game, but if they were to lose it would also allow Indian a State to enter the tournament with an at-large bid.

The Shockers did not let that happen, and won the game with a final score of 83-69. They did their best to show that they are just as good as anyone else in the league, if not the best.

The top spot in the college basketball currently belongs to Florida, who is also on quite a streak, and was able to go 18-0 in the SEC. After incredible seasons from both teams, the real question is, who gets the No.1 overall seed?

Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall is proud of his team, and recently said “We’re not flawless. Our record is flawless. We’ve got great players. They’ve taken us on an unbelievable ride to this point.”

Wichita State’s basketball team continues to win, and won the Missouri Valley Conference, but fans around the country continue to criticize them, claiming that they are overrated and do not deserve all the hype.

Despite the criticism from fans of other teams, they continue to prove people wrong after their 34-game winning streak, but they do not have to play the stiff competition that teams in the Big 12 or ACC have to face, and may have a tough time when they enter the tournament.

The 2013-2014 season has seen the top ten rankings shake up from week to week, and teams such as Arizona and Syracuse have also been at the top, while they have both been struggling as of lately. It simply shows that once the tournament starts, anyone is capable of rising to the top, and becoming the champion.

Is Wichita State basketball for real? Will they have a chance at winning the championship? Tune in for the selection show on Sunday in order to see who they will be matched up with, and the tournament will start next week.

  • AP Men’s Basketball Top 25: New Poll Out, Where Does Your Team Stand?

It’s the start of a new week, and all the basketball fans know what that means, right? It is time for a new poll showing everyone the AP Men’s basketball teams, and how they are all ranked.

There was not a lot of movement this week, but certainly some, and while the top two teams remained undefeated, the top ten was shaken up some.

The thing that really screwed things up was when Louisville lost to North Carolina, sending them from #3 down to #9, and allowing for several other teams to jump ahead of them.

The latest poll was released today, which features Michigan State at the top, followed by Kansas and Kentucky.

Michigan State came into the season ranked #2, and beat Kentucky who was the top-ranked team at the time on November 12, in order to move into the #1 spot. Kansas has also looked very good all year, and is currently undefeated behind their young star, Andrew Wiggins.

The AP college basketball was shaken up most in the middle of rankings when VCU, Memphis, and New Mexico all lost. UMass was also the team that was able to take down the #25 ranked New Mexico, and remain undefeated with wins over LSU, Nebraska and Boston College.

Michigan State won on Saturday, which secured them as the winners of the Coaches Vs. Cancer Classic, defeating Oklahoma with a score of 87-76. The Big Ten looks to be a dominant force in college basketball once again, as Wisconsin and Ohio State are both currently ranked in the top ten, along with the Spartans.

After the Big East was broken up at the end of last season, it is hard to keep track of what teams are in each conference. As the season progresses, that may become more clear, but the biggest change that fans will see is the fact that former powerhouses in the conference, Syracuse and Pittsburgh, have now entered the ACC.

Some people would argue that the ACC was already one of the tougher conferences to play in with both Duke and North Carolina, and maybe the toughest. When Syracuse, currently ranked #8 in the nation, and Pittsburgh, are thrown into the equation, it almost creates a super conference that would be intimidating for any team to play in. It will certainly be interesting to see how things play out by the end of the season.

The AP men’s basketball top 25 has been updated for this week, and features many of the same teams that we have seen all year, with not a lot of change. With big tests for top teams occurring all the time, that is likely to change at any time though.

  • Dick Clark Foundation Donates $5 Million For Syracuse Studio

Syracuse University announced this week that the Kari and Dick Clark Foundation has donated $5 million toward the $18 million renovation of studio facilities at the university’s Newhouse School. The renovated studio will be renamed after Dick Clark, the famed radio and American Bandstand host who died last year of a heart attack.

“Syracuse was always important to Dick and very close to his heart throughout his life,” said Kari Clark. “It will mean so much to see his name attached to a school and a studio facility that will literally launch a thousand careers in this business. This is just a continuation of what he did with Bandstand – gave youth a stage, then got out of the way.”

Clark attended Syracuse in the 40s and 50s, graduating with a degree in advertising. Starting in the 80s, Clark organized yearly trips to Los Angeles for Newhouse School students, helping many of them secure jobs in broadcasting.

“His door was always open to us,” said Larry Martin, Syracuse’s VP of program development. “I first contacted him in the 1980s – he was a giant in the entertainment industry – and he responded right away, very enthusiastic about meeting the students.”

In addition to the Newhouse School donation, the Kari and Dick Clark Foundation has also donated $1 million to Clark’s Syracuse fraternity, Delta Kappa Epsilon, for need-based scholarships.

  • UNC Asheville Leads Syracuse At Halftime 34-30

Can this be the day we see a No. 16 seed upset a No. 1 seed? It could be as the UNC Asheville Bulldogs are leading the Syracuse Orange 34-30. It should be noted this is only the sixth time that a No. 16 seed has been leading a No. 1 seed at the half.

At the end of the half there was a little controversy as there was a layup attempt at the end of the shot clock. We’ve included an image of it below so you can see that the ball is still in the Syracuse players hand as the shot clock hit zero.

    (image)

It’ll be interesting to see how the rest of this game plays out, no pun intended. Will UNC Asheville be able to keep their furious pace up? Will Syracuse finally wake up? It is March and anything can happen folks.

What are your thoughts on the game? Let us know in the comment section below.

Below is some Twitter reaction to the surprising halftime score:

  • Syracuse vs. UNC Asheville: Early Twitter Reaction

We’re underway in Pittsburgh as Syracuse and UNC Asheville has tipped off. Early on it seems that the Bulldogs of UNC Asheville aren’t scared by the No. 1 that is beside the Syracuse name, as they’re hitting almost every shot their jacking up.

Could this be the day where we see a No. 16 FINALLY defeat a No. 1 seed? I guess we’ll see… here is some early Twitter reaction to the game though.

  • Syracuse vs. UNC Asheville: March Madness 2012 Round 2 Game

The Syracuse Orange enter the tournament as a No. 1 seed in the East Region with a record of 31-2. They’ll be taking on No. 16 seed UNC Asheville, who will try an become the first No. 16-seeded team to ever knock off a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The Orange were bounced early from the Big East Tournament by Cincinnati and were force to finish watching the tournament from home. To make matters even worse, earlier this week Syracuse shared the devastating news that starting center, Fab Melo, as he was ruled ineligible. It’ll be hard for Syracuse to make up what Melo brought to the team, with his 25.4 minutes, 5.8 rebounds, 2.9 blocks, and 7.8 points per game.

  • Fab Melo Continues To Be A Twitter Trend

Fab Melo Continues To Be A Twitter Trend

The news about Syracuse’s decision to bench seven-footer Fab Melo due to academic issues is the topic of much conversation as we head into the (real) Big Dance. No offense to the opening round/play-in games, but the real action starts tomorrow, and the buzz around Syracuse has taken a hit because of Melo’s suspension.

The experts have already offered their opinion on how the lack of Fab Melo to anchor the Orange’s 2-3 zone will impact Syracuse’s tournament chances, but the chatter surrounding Melo did not end after the experts tweeted.

The fans continue to weigh in on Melo’s suspension, and let’s just say, if Twitter could shape the future of upcoming sporting events, I’m not sure Syracuse would make it out of the first round:

What about you? How does the news of Melo’s suspension alter your picks?

  • Fab Melo To Miss NCAA Tournament: Experts Weigh In Via Twitter

The Syracuse men’s basketball team got some devastating news today as their starting center Fab Melo was ruled ineligible and will not play in the NCAA basketball tournament. No further details have been announced about the matter, but the Syracuse Athletic Department released the following statement: “Given University policy and federal student privacy laws, no further details can be provided at this time.”

With Syracuse set to tipoff against UNC-Asheville, in just two days, it’ll be interesting to see how the ‘Cuse handles this situation. With this bracket busting news, some of the heavyweights in the college basketball world shared some of their insights on the matter:

  • Syracuse Fires Bernie Fine, Jim Boeheim and SU Chancellor Issue Statements

Syracuse associate head basketball coach, Bernie Fine, has been “terminated, effective immediately” according to a statement by the vice president for public affairs at Syracuse University, Kevin Quinn.

Two former Syracuse University ball boys alleged that they had been molested by Fine from the late 1970s to the 1990s.

Both Syracuse’s Chancellor and head basketball coach Jim Boeheim have released statements, you can read them below:

    Chancellor Nancy Cantor’s statement:

A message from Chancellor Cantor: http://t.co/fpqK6GCN 3 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

    Dear Students, Faculty, & Staff:

Tonight, in the wake of troubling new allegations that emerged in the media today, I am writing to let you know that Bernie Fine’s employment at the University has been terminated effective immediately.

Frankly, the events of the past week have shaken us all. The taped phone call that ESPN revealed today was not provided to the university by Mr. Davis during the 2005 investigation by our legal counsel. Like the media review of the case a few years earlier, no other witnesses came forward during the university investigation, and those who felt they knew Bernie best could not imagine what has unfolded.

Since I last wrote to you, we have been cooperating fully with the authorities. On Friday, November 18th, as the District Attorney has noted, we turned over to his office the results of our 2005 months-long investigation. Also on November 18, our Board of Trustees retained an independent law firm, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, to review our procedures in responding to the initial allegations when they first came to the University’s attention. I fully supported that decision and it is vital that we examine our protocols and actions in dealing with such serious allegations. We need to learn all we can from this terrible lesson.

All of us have the responsibility, individually and collectively, to ensure that Syracuse University remains a safe place for every campus community member and everyone with whom we interact on a daily basis on campus or in the community as part of our learning, scholarship, or work. We do not tolerate abuse. If anything good comes out of this tragedy, it will be that this basic principle is reinforced.

    Sincerely,

    Nancy Cantor

A new statement from Jim Boeheim – http://t.co/iT81huXc 3 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

    Jim Boeheim’s statement:

“The allegations that have come forth today are disturbing and deeply troubling. I am personally very shocked because I have never witnessed any of the activities that have been alleged. I believe the university took the appropriate step tonight. What is most important is that this matter be fully investigated and that anyone with information be supported to come forward so that the truth can be found. I deeply regret any statements I made that might have inhibited that from occurring or been insensitive to victims of abuse.”
