Coronavirus: Apple and Amazon Latest to Recommend Telecommuting

Apple and Amazon are among the latest companies to recommend their employees work from home due to the growing threat of the coronavirus.

As the World Health Organization (WHO) warns “the threat of a pandemic has become very real,” governments and companies are scrambling to contain the spread. Major events, such as SXSW, have been cancelled, while others, such as WWDC, hang in the balance. In addition to those measures, multiple companies have implemented work-from-home policies, in some cases voluntary and others mandatory. Microsoft, Twitter and Google have all recommended at least some of their employees—especially those in heavily impacted regions—work from home.

Now Apple and Amazon have joined their ranks. Amazon has specifically asked employees in New Jersey and New York to work from home, as New York has one of the biggest concentrations of confirmed cases. Apple has taken it a step further, giving employees at most of its global offices the opportunity to work from home.

Long before the coronavirus was a concern, some estimates projected 60% of office workers telecommuting by 2022. As the virus continues to spread, telecommuting may very well become the new norm long before that.

  • Coronavirus: SXSW Cancelled Due to Coronavirus

Coronavirus: SXSW Cancelled Due to Coronavirus

After multiple companies pulled out of the event, SXSW has officially been cancelled by the City of Austin.

The festival’s organizers said, “We are devastated to share this news with you. ‘The show must go on’ is in our DNA, and this is the first time in 34 years that the March event will not take place. We are now working through the ramifications of this unprecedented situation.

“As recently as Wednesday, Austin Public Health stated that ‘there’s no evidence that closing SXSW or any other gatherings will make the community safer.’ However, this situation evolved rapidly, and we honor and respect the City of Austin’s decision. We are committed to do our part to help protect our staff, attendees, and fellow Austinites.

“We are exploring options to reschedule the event and are working to provide a virtual SXSW online experience as soon as possible for 2020 participants, starting with SXSW EDU. For our registrants, clients, and participants we will be in touch as soon as possible and will publish an FAQ.”

With new confirmed cases popping up all over the world, as well as the United States, governments are increasingly working to limit large gatherings in an effort to get ahead of the outbreak.

  • Coronavirus: Apple, Netflix and Others Pull Out of SXSW Conference

Coronavirus: Apple, Netflix and Others Pull Out of SXSW Conference

Apple and Netflix are among the latest companies to pull out of the South by Southwest Conference scheduled for March 13 in Austin, Texas.

As fears about the spread of the coronavirus continue to mount, with more infections and deaths being reported in the U.S., companies are increasingly pulling out of or cancelling conferences. SXSW has already had a number of high-profile companies cancel their plans to attend, including Amazon, Facebook and Twitter.

According to Bloomberg, Apple has announced it’s cancelling its plans to attend despite its intentions to debut three new Apple TV+ programs. Similarly, Netflix planned on unveiling a feature film and four documentaries. CNN has also cancelled its plans to attend.

As Bloomberg points out, with Apple’s WWDC scheduled for June, the company will soon have to make a decision about whether to proceed or change to a virtual conference as Google did with its Google Cloud Next conference.

  • The Power of Gratitude and Your Network at SXSW

The Power of Gratitude and Your Network at SXSW

A lot of people don’t come to SXSW anymore because they are afraid it isn’t cool.

That, however, couldn’t be further from the truth.

SXSW is a week that I look forward to every year to deepen partnerships and relationships from around the world, meet new friends, and interconnect people in ways they haven’t thought possible before.

How? Gratitude.  Helping people in ways they don’t see as they are trapped in their 4 walls.

This was the genesis for the Next Action Podcast for me.

But how would I put it into practice this year? Try to help as many people as I could with no expectations in return.

Here are a few examples in action:

    HOW I MET QUINTIN COLEMAN

Many sales and business development people might instinctively try to find the most powerful or valuable person in the room. I don’t believe this is healthy; after all, every person is a universe, and thanks to tools like LinkedIn, people are so interconnected and can help you in ways you’ll never see coming.

While I was at the LinkedIn Lounge, I came across a beautiful set with great lighting and a number of people were taking pictures there. Quintin was ahead of me in line and just looked so excited to be there, you couldn’t help but speak with him. We even got on the stage and took some photos together.

After our impromptu photo shoot, I sat down with him and we were talking about his LinkedIn profile.  What many people would have charged for consulting advice, I was happy to give away for free.

And, as the internet says…you won’t believe what happened next.

Shayna Goldstein, An official SXSW photographer saw what we were up to and captured the moment in this epic shot!

Even better, she had a chance to check out more about what I do running NowSourcing, and brought her partner Aaron Rogosin for a full photo shoot of our trade show presence!

    UNITING YOUR TRIBE

People that have never attended SXSW may not realize that nearly 300,000 people flock to Austin for the event, so it’s extremely difficult to coordinate meetings without careful planning.  It makes more sense to have a few anchor events and have your tribe come to you vs trying to message people on Facebook only to connect once all of SXSW is over.

Here were a few such spots in my travels:

    THE MUCKRACK PARTY
MuckRack Party (photo credit: Jordan French) L-R Jordan French, Tina Mulqueen, Brian Wallace, Adryenn Ashley, Gavin Gillas, Jeffrey Powers

The MuckRack party provided a great place to meet up with several journalist friends and meet new ones.  Also gave a chance for yours truly and Grit Daily owner Jordan French a chance to finally meet in person!

Building off last year’s inaugural event, Miranda Rose LozanoKatie Wallace, and I brought getting to know the people behind their LinkedIn profiles it back for a 2nd season at an intimate setting downtown. Great getting to see friends old and new.

    PARTIES AND PANELS BREAKFAST

The second annual Parties and Panels Breakfast was an event for the early birds of SXSW – and a uniting of the SXSW Interactive Networking and SXSW Panel Planning  FB Groups – IRL.  special thanks to Angelique LaRue for running the SXSW 2019 Interactive networking group, Chad Parisman for helping admin, and Krista Mollion for live-streaming the event.

    FILMING THE FILMMAKER

Towards the end of my SXSW stay, Shauna Arnot filmed me for her Haste and Hustle show.

Amrit Dhariwal was kind enough to do the videography and after the set, we had a chance to speak about growing his young presence online.  As he was in need of a proper LinkedIn headshot, I got out my new iPhoneXR and did a great portrait mode headshot on the spot.

    IN CONCLUSION

And of course, this mindset isn’t just for SXSW, nor is it just a sales tactic. It’s a way of life.  If you still doubt my methods, I’d suggest reading The Go-Giver by Bob Burg. Small mindset shifts make all the difference!

  • 5 Takeaways From SXSW 2019

    5 Takeaways From SXSW 2019

SXSW Interactive has evolved over the past decade that I have been going. For starters, I’ve watched ridesharing services come, go, and come back again, but it doesn’t seem to help the traffic situation either way. This year there were scooters on top of everything, which come with their own set of issues. It was bigger and more crowded than ever this year, but SXSW is still the best place to learn about the cutting edge of business and technology as well as the latest trends.

Of particular note this year was the first ever tracks for blockchain and cryptocurrency as well as one for the business of cannabis. Both sectors are red hot right now, and while cryptocurrency isn’t always at the forefront of the news cycle these days, blockchain is more popular than ever.

The great thing about SXSW is that you get to peer into the future of technologies and businesses that most people don’t yet know exist, or in some cases that we often just take for granted. Here are the 5 biggest takeaways from SXSW 2019:

1 – LinkedIn went way bigger than last year.

From a tradeshow booth at the SXSW trade show to an entire creator lounge at Brazos Hall, LinkedIn was all in for SXSW 2019. There were multiple stations for a series of creator speeches that included Brian Solis and his new book, Lifescale, Goldie Chan on brand reputation, and Rosanna Durruthy, LinkedIn’s Head of Diversity. Numerous LinkedIn creators were filming live content, which is only available to a very small test group at this time. There was even a fireside chat with Mindy Kaling about how to live your best work life, which included tips like owning who you are and focusing on focusing.

    Photo: Brian Wallace

2 – Scooters were the new Uber.

This was my 10th SXSW over the last 11 years, and I’ve watched the city grow and get significantly more and more crowded during that time. Popular ridesharing services entered the city, got kicked out and made way for new local ridesharing services, and then the original ridesharing services finally returned. What I wasn’t expecting this year was to see an onslaught of scooters and the dangers that they entailed. According to CNBC, the number of scooters in Austin during SXSW from five different companies was around 9000, solidifying the trend of ‘micro mobility’. It was concerning to see so many scooters and so few people wearing helmets or obeying traffic laws, but as with any new technology there’s always going to be a learning curve.

3 – Crypto/Blockchain and the Cannabiz were the new kids on the block.

This marked the first year that SXSW had official tracks for cryptocurrency / blockchain and cannabusiness. Unfortunately, they were mainly happening after the SXSW Interactive days, so many of the business and marketing folk didn’t get the opportunity to learn more about these growing industries. This year at SXSW was the second annual Just HODL It event, which featured speakers from multiple blockchain and cryptocurrency startups. Among them was my friend Adryenn Ashley from Loly.io, who is using blockchain to develop a revolutionary dating app. The main crypto and blockchain track focused on the future of these technologies, how policy will affect their use and implementation, and what the future might hold.

4 – The Mercedes TechSet Lounge is SXSW’s best kept secret.

The TechSet lounge, hosted by Mercedes this year, has been the best place to grab some downtime for the last 12 years at SXSW. The lounge’s co-hosts were Brian Solis and Stephanie Agresta. It’s one of the best kept secrets for a solid place to work, meet, network, get great coffee, recharge, and watch a full plate of speakers. Mercedes did a fabulous job with the lounge this year!

    Photo @aaronrogosin of @outer_elements

5 – Mental health tech like calm.com is the next big tech frontier.

By some estimates, one in four people worldwide will be affected by a mental health problem at some point in their lives. The tech folks, entrepreneurs, political enthusiasts, and the rest of the people who end up at a place like SXSW are often driven to their breaking point at times. It was great to see a number of SXSW panels dedicated to mental health themes this year, most notably Calm.com. Calm.com, which produced an app to help folks with mindfulness, meditation, sleeping, and more, is the first mental health unicorn company. Their booth at the trade show was all about relaxation — and it even featured a sloth!

If you missed out on SXSW this year, it’s time to start planning for next year. After all, where else are you going to see a sloth?

  • Stella Maxwell Kissing, Playing Grab-Ass With Miley Cyrus [Pics]

Stella Maxwell gets her own press, and needs no help from anyone else. But Miley Cyrus is giving her some anyway.

Maxwell is a Victoria’s Secret Angel, one of only ten to be selected for the year. She first connected with Miley Cyrus when Cyrus launched a jewelry line. Maxwell modeled for the line. Since then, they have been friends.

But now photos have surfaced of Stella Maxwell and Miley Cyrus locked in a passionate kiss. In the pics, Miley is grabbing Maxwell’s butt firmly. This was not just some little peck for the cameras. There is no indication that the pair knew they were being seen by anyone else.

When asked by V Magazine recently if she has a significant other, Maxwell responded with a cryptic: “Define significant…”

Stella Maxwell did tell the magazine that she visited SXSW in Austin with Miley shortly after Cyrus’ breakup with Patrick Schwarzenegger. Then the pair hit Vegas together.

“We had a lot of fun,” Maxwell said. “It was a quick trip though. We were just coming from an amazing visit to Austin, Texas for SXSW, so we were a bit tired. But really the quick stop over was super cool.”

For her part, Miley Cyrus has made no secret of her relationships with other women. She told Paper Magazine:

“I am literally open to every single thing that is consenting and doesn’t involve an animal and everyone is of age. Everything that’s legal, I’m down with. Yo, I’m down with any adult — anyone over the age of 18 who is down to love me. I don’t relate to being boy or girl, and I don’t have to have my partner relate to boy or girl.”

  • Ally Sheedy And Molly Ringwald Talk “Breakfast Club” During 30th Anniversary Celebration

Ally Sheedy And Molly Ringwald Talk “Breakfast Club” During 30th Anniversary Celebration

Ally Sheedy and Molly Ringwald were on hand in Austin, Texas for the 30th anniversary screening of a newly remastered version of the classic film, The Breakfast Club.

The movie, which stars Ally Sheedy as the basketcase, Molly Ringwald as the princess, Emilio Estevez as the jock, Anthony Michael Hall as the nerd, and Judd Nelson as the fearless outsider, became a cult classic. And for good reason.

The movie is relatable to just about anyone.

Ally Sheedy said the same thing about The Breakfast Club. She now volunteers as a teacher at LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts, and she said the movie’s message was clear and meant for everyone.

“You do matter, we are interested in you, and we’re going to tell your story,” she said.

Molly Ringwald recalled the first time she ever read the script. It was sent to her by director John Hughes, a frequent collaborator with Ringwald, as filming for their other classic, Sixteen Candles, was wrapping.

She knew the moment she saw it that she would do it.

“It was the best script I ever read,” Ringwald told ET. “I loved it. I loved everything about it–every character. I knew immediately I wanted to be involved.”

She later added, “It transcends generations. It still speaks to a lot different people because the essential message is we are all outsiders not matter who we are and we all feel alone.”

While the movie was so important to many people, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy both agreed that The Breakfast Club shouldn’t be remade.

Ringwald said, “They should do something that is inspired in some way because when I look back on The Breakfast Club I think it speaks to so many different people but at the same time it’s incredibly white.”

She added, “I think if there was ever another movie that was inspired by, I think it really needs to incorporate racial diversity. Not just racial but all kinds of diversity.”

What do you think of Ally Sheedy and Molly Ringwald’s opinion that The Breakfast Club shouldn’t be remade? Agree or Disagree?

  • 50 Cent Talks Departure From Interscope, and New G-Unit Venture

50 Cent’s been a busy man these days. On Feb. 20, the Get Rich or Die Trying rapper announced his decision to part ways with his long-time record label Shady/Aftermath/Interscope.

According to Hollywood Reporter, 50 Cent opened up about his departure from the label before taking the stage at SWSX. “It’s liberating,” the rapper-entrepreneur told the publication.

The “Hustler” rapper’s notable imprint G-Unit Records now has a new worldwide distribution deal with Capitol Music Group. The new deal is a part of Capitol’s independent services division, Caroline. He went on to explain the distinct contrast between working for major, multinational music corporation and owning an independent record label.

“It’s great. I choose everything: what to release [and] when to release it,” he continued. “The fun part is that there doesn’t have to be a schedule. There’s no timeline. If I write a record and I want to put it out, I’ll put it out.”

He went on to give an example of a personal account where he didn’t have much executive power in regards to the direction of his album’s production, marketing and distribution.

“I’ll give you an example of how the process was at Interscope,” he said. “[With] my very first album [Get Rich or Die Tryin’)] we had to choose between two records for the single: ‘If I Can’t’ and ‘In Da Club.’ It wasn’t that big of a deal which one was the single because they’re both produced by Dr. Dre. I was sitting on the couch, having already talked about it privately [with Eminem] that ‘In Da Club’ was the record. Em goes, ‘’In Da Club,’ definitely.’ And then the entire room agreed. The other record never turned into a single. ‘If I Can’t’ performed like a single at radio, but there was never a video for it..”

So he’s definitely looking forward to making moves on his own. His first priority is his upcoming album, Animal Ambition. “This album is about the positive and negative effects of prosperity. If I’m doing too good, it brings envy and jealousy which creates negative energy.”

Animal Ambition is set to be released June 3, 2014. 50 Cent also has another album entitled Street King Immortal, which is tentatively scheduled to be released later this year. Both albums will be the first releases under his new G-Unit imprint.

  • Tyler, The Creator Arrested At SXSW, Posts $25K Bail

Tyler, The Creator was arrested this past weekend after encouraging fans to push past security to get into his full-capacity SXSW show in Austin. The Hollywood Reporter has the police report which claims: “The subject encouraged a large crowd on more than one occasion to force themselves past venue employees controlling access at the venue which was already at full capacity.”

The police video shows scores of fans rushing to enter the venue, and Tyler yelling to “just run in right now, do it, let’s go.” The crowd pushed past employees working at the door, creating an “immediate danger of injury to persons.” He was charged with a Riot-Class A Misdemeanor, which carries a $25,000 bond.

His jail-time was short-lived, however; Tyler secured the $25,000 bond on Saturday, letting the rapper free and on to play a sold-out show at the Dallas House of Blues that night.

Tyler, The Creator had already had a drama-filled week at Austin’s South By Southwest music festival, after he had to cancel a show early Thursday morning after a drunk driving incident. A motorist stopped for a possible DUI sped away from police and drove the wrong way down a one-way street, slamming into a crowd outside of the nightclub Mohawk, where Tyler was scheduled to perform. The driver is faced with two charges of capital murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault. Tyler expressed his grief on his Twitter, and also his aggravation at speculation that his arrest is connected in any way to the drunk driving incident.

Seems like Tyler can’t catch a break. Do you think Tyler will return to SXSW after the drama-filled week he’s endured?

  • Katy Perry Dissed By Lady Gaga At SXSW

Katy Perry Dissed By Lady Gaga At SXSW

Is there a rivalry between Lady Gaga and Katy Perry? This past week at the South By Southwest music festival in Austin, TX, Lady Gaga dismissed any comparisons between herself and Katy. “I don’t know what the f–k I have to do with Katy Perry,” Gaga said onstage at the Austin Convention Center. “Our music is so completely different. I couldn’t be any more different than her, really.”

The so-called “feud” had been brewing ever since last August, when both pop stars released their new singles (Perry with “Roar” and Gaga with “Applause”) on the same day. Back then, Gaga told Ryan Seacrest, “I really like Katy Perry and her fans,” trying to squash any rivalry between the two. Since then the two ladies have been busy supporting their albums on world tours, with Katy Perry’s “Prism” undoubtedly outperforming Gaga’s “Artpop,” thanks to the success of her catchy radio hits and perhaps her publicized romance with now ex-boyfriend John Mayer.

Meanwhile, back at SXSW Gaga gave a controversial performance where she allowed painter Millie Brown to throw up on her while on stage, performing the rest of her set with the vomit on her body. “It was just exciting to see people talk about performance art on the internet,” Gaga says. “We really just did it because we believe in the performance and we believe in what it meant to the song.”

What do you think of the Lady Gaga and Katy Perry comparisons? Do you think the pop divas share similarities? Let us know!

  • Millie Brown Has More Art In Her Vomit Than Us

Who is Millie Brown? Millie Brown puts every person claiming to have a sensitive stomach to pure, colorful shame– she might rival the guy from Man vs. Food for being the spokesperson for Stomach Problems. She was first seen vomiting colored milk in a Lady Gaga video, and you’ll probably see her barfing or with stuff dripping out of her mouth if you do an image search for her name. Her consistency should maybe be applauded– her buzz has recently been increased after blowing chunks on Lady Gaga during the ARTPOP singer’s SXSW set.

(Warning: I will attempt to use every single last term for “vomit” that I know in this article.)

But wait. This is not a reaction to the specialized brand of the Lady Gaga Performance Sensations. Although The Gaga chose to channel a Rotisserie Chicken by opening her performance tied naked to a BBQ roast-stick while telling the audience to “put their f-bomb phones down,” Millie Brown upchucking on Lady Gaga is a thing. It’s art, honey.

Millie Brown is a 27-year-old artist who has been Calling Earl on canvas since 2005. She starves herself for two days before producing a piece, then drinks colored milk which either makes it way to the canvas by itself, or via a little prodding from Brown’s fingers down her throat. At the end of the session, how the paints in the milk fall on the canvas makes her creation. Kind of like what this artist does with nail polish–but not– because while that artist does let the nail polish randomly fall, she does not eat it first. But Millie Brown says that drinking colored milk (on an empty stomach, no less) doesn’t affect her body, so we have to believe her.

So there you have it. Millie Brown, maybe soon to be known as the next Ralphael (see what I did there?). Either way she is a very interesting artist that you might be into who has already hurled on Lady Gaga. Maybe you’ll be the next lucky one. What do you think? Avant-garde or Pointless Promotion of Bulimia? While you decide, feel free to check out her official Facebook artist page here.

  • SXSW Hipsters Pretend to Know Bands So Obscure They Don’t Even Exist

If you ask the crowd at SXSW about some hot new bands like “DJ Heavy Flow” and “What the Fuck Bruce Jenner,” they’ll probably tell you that they not only know of their music, but are pretty into it too. In fact, What the Fuck Bruce Jenner is even on the same level as “Neil Patrick Harassment”–which is surely saying something.

The only problem here is that these bands don’t exist (yet), and are simply the creations of big fat liar exposer Jimmy Kimmel and his awesome Lie Witness News segment.

Usually, Kimmel takes to Hollywood Blvd to prove why most people shouldn’t breed–but this week he’s been doing his show live from Austin, Texas at the SXSW festival so he figured that hipsters were an easy target.

At SXSW, there’s apparently nothing worse than not knowing some obscure band. Hasn’t anyone ever heard of the words “nope, never heard of them–I should check them out though!”

  • Jimmy Kimmel Pulls Prank On SXSW Attendees

Jimmy Kimmel is a known prankster (remember the twerking girl who caught herself on fire and went viral?), and while he’s in Austin this week for the South by Southwest music festival, he has a rather large audience to pull from when it’s time to be mischievous.

The talk-show host decided to make up some hilarious band names and send a “reporter” out into the crowds to ask what they think of their music. The results were pretty funny. Take a look at music lovers trying to describe non-existent female DJ Heavy Flo:

The music festival needed a bit of levity this week after a tragic incident on Wednesday, when a drunk driver careened through two police barriers after being pulled over and drove into a crowd of people, killing two and injuring 23. The driver, 21-year old Rashad Charjuan Owens, was evading police and was reportedly aiming for people rather than trying to avoid hitting them. He faces two charges of capital murder–among others–which means he will be eligible for the death penalty.

  • Shaq Says He Spends $1000 a Week on Apps

Shaq Says He Spends $1000 a Week on Apps

“I’ve always been a techie,” said Shaq in a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal as SXSW. ‘I’m not ashamed to say I’m a geek at heart.”

Shaq does love his tech–especially social media. Not only is he incredibly active on Twitter and Instagram (and has been for years), but he’s on the advisory board of a video startup called Tout. He has both an iPhone and Android device. He’s enthusiastic about Google Glass. The techie credentials are there, for sure.

Having said that, I think we need to stage an intervention. His love of tech makes me believe that he is at least close to accurate when he says that he spends a grand a week on apps.

“Honestly, I probably spend $1,000 on apps a week. Yeah, $1,000 on apps a week,” said the Big Shaqtus. “Real money. Last week I bought like 20 deer hunter games–like hunting the deer on my phone.”

“So, I’m just a geek you know. When I’m not working, I spend all my money on apps,” he said.

First off, congratulations for having enough money to spend a grand a week on apps. Also, how the hell does one spend a grand a week on apps?

In other mildly unbelievable Shaq news, Shaq Fu is back. Yes. Shaq Fu is back.

  • Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez Sexy Video

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez Sexy Video

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez dating rumors are buzzing harder than his DUI arrest from earlier in the year. First, the two broke up and dealt with nasty rumors, called each other names, ended up in rehab and now getting back together? It sure does seem that way-especially if the Biebs has his way with the matter.

Today, the 20-year-old posted two sexy little dance numbers that starred both him and Gomez. While it’s uncertain when the videos were taken, it’s crystal clear that the two once-lovebirds have insane chemistry.

The videos were later deleted by Bieber, but it seems pretty clear that he’s missing his ex.

The song featured in the video is John Legend’s “Ordinary People” which perfectly describes the ups and downs of relationships. (Fitting for the duo, huh?)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqHZPrRpQZ8

Just 10 days ago, the Canadian singer seemed to be professing his love for Gomez. He even took to Instagram to post a picture of Gomez from the Oscars. The picture was sweetly captioned saying, “Most elegant princess in the world.”

While Gomez didn’t reply to the mushy post, she did upload a picture of her and fellow-Disney star Vanessa Hudgens enjoying their time at the Oscars. She called Hudgens her “only, official party buddy for life.”

But just when you think Gomez doesn’t want anything to do with the Biebs, the two were spotted together over the weekend.Bieber joined Gomez in Texas over the weekend where she had performances lined up. They were even caught cozying up to one another.

While in Texas, Bieber showed up at the 2014 SXSW Festival on Sunday for a surprise performance. During the show, he dedicated, “As Long As You Love Me” to his “baby girl.”

Hmmm…Was he dedicating the love song to his possibly on-again girlfriend Gomez who was reportedly sitting backstage? I think so…

What do you think about Bieber and Gomez? Should they just stay split or do you think their sultry romance is worth sticking it out for?

  • Edward Snowden Appears At SXSW; Calls For Better Online Security Measures

In a rare public appearance, fugitive and National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden addressed the audience of the SXSW conference regarding Internet privacy and surveillance.

The conference, which was held on Monday in Austin, Texas, put the controversial U.S. intelligence leaker through via Google Hangouts all the way from Russia, where Snowden currently resides. The U.S. Constitution backdrop gave a touch of patriotism to his emphatic speech, which discussed a variety of topics that revolved around the importance of encryption software in people’s private communications.

Declaring that the NSA was “setting fire to the future of the Internet”, Snowden urged the techie-dominated audience to be more vigilant in “fighting the fire”. Snowden also called for the proactive participation of public advocates from the tech community who will make sure that mass surveillance problems are acknowledged and resolved accordingly.

The annual event, which lasted an hour, was hosted by Snowden’s lawyer and director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Speech, Privacy & Technology Project, Ben Wizner. It also featured the comments and opinion of ACLU’s security and privacy researcher Christopher Soghoian who said that services must be secure from the get-go. This means that developers have to be better at anticipating security issues as opposed to simply coming up with ways to deal with them later on.

Soghoian added that several technology companies have made vast improvements on their security functions ever since Snowden leaked highly classified information on the U.S. government’s spy programs last year. Despite these developments, Soghoian maintained that the advertising-based models of these companies require the collection of user data, which is eventually accessed by the government.

Snowden concluded his speech by negating rumors that the NSA has broken into popular encryption standards and saying that “encryption does work”. He also declared that he would do what he did again “regardless of what happens” to him because he believed that the U.S. Constitution “was being violated on a massive scale”.

  • Jimi Hendrix Biopic Releases Exclusive Clips Featuring Andre Benjamin [Video]

For those that have not become aware yet, there is an upcoming biopic that will feature Andre Benjamin in the role of rock legend Jimi Hendrix. Benjamin is known to many as Andre 3000, and half of the hip hop duo Outkast.

Two clips were recently released showing fans what it will be like to see the Jimi Hendrix portrayed on the big screen for the first time. The film is set to be screened at the upcoming SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.

The film will be distributed by Open Road productions, and also features Imogen Poots as Linda Keith, who is featured in one of the early clips. Keith was also a girlfriend to Keith Richards, and she inspired songs that each of them wrote, including Hendrix’s “Red House.”

The film, which is titled All Is By My Side, already had a premiere at the Toronto Film Festival last fall, although its release date for the United States is unknown at this time. As a musician, Hendrix has been widely regarded as one of the best in his genre, and due to his outstanding skills on the electric guitar, he continues to remain popular in the rock genre.

JImi Hendrix was known for his popular songs such as “Purple Haze,” “The Wind Cries Mary,” “Hey Joe,” and many more, but he has truly captivated fans for decades due to his guitar skills. He died at the age of 27, and was not able to have a long career like many others of his time.

However, due to issues with Jimi Hendrix’s estate, the film is not able to include the songs that he wrote, and made popular. However, he also made songs by other people famous, and gave his unique take on others, with “All Along The Watchtower and “The Star Spangled Banner” as likely inclusions in the film.

As with other films that profile musicians such as Walk The Line and Ray, All Is By My Side will focus on Jimi Hendrix in his early years, and lead up to the time when he became a famous musician.

The Jimi Hendrix film is sure to be well-done, as it will be written, and directed by John Ridley. Ridley is just coming off of an Oscar win for his screenplay for 12 Years A Slave, a film that also won Best Picture, and was directed by Steve McQueen.

  • Here’s Some Footage Of That NASA-Funded 3D Pizza Printer

Here’s Some Footage Of That NASA-Funded 3D Pizza Printer

Back in May, NASA announced that it was working with Systems & Materials Research on a 3D printer that could make food. The idea was that astronauts on long trips could print their food instead of having to eat from a tube. The initial goal was to have the 3D printer make a pizza, and now we know it has achieved that goal.

KXAN, a local NBC affiliate in Austin, Texas, made a trip to the local SXSW Eco conference to see the future of sustainability. What they found was Systems & Materials Research showing off their 3D food printer that makes little pizzas using nothing but powdered ingredients and water.

So, wait, how does this all work? The news report doesn’t go into detail, but previous reports from the makers have shown us that it combines water and oil with the powdered ingredients before sending what could be classified as “food goop” onto a heated tray. The tray then heats the dough, sauce and cheese substances to create a miniature cheese pizza.

As the report notes, Systems & Materials Research have yet to receive FDA clearance for their 3D printed pizzas. Until then, it can’t serve the food to the general public. When it does, however, expect the first review to not be very flattering.
