  • Malia Obama Turned Sweet 16 on the 4th of July

Malia Obama turned sweet 16 on Friday–the 4th of July. The daughter of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama is just one of several White House daughters to celebrate this milestone birthday while their dad was in office.

Twins Barbara and Jenna Bush turned 16 while their father George W. Bush was president. Chelsea Clinton–who is expecting her first baby in the coming months–turned 16 when Bill Clinton was in office. Who can forget little Amy Carter who skipped through the White House during Jimmy Carter’s one-term White House reign? She turned sweet 16 at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., too.

And then there’s Susan Ford, whom the media heard little about, except maybe for that 16th birthday milestone. Her mom Betty Ford was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after Gerald Ford took office, so Susan took a bit of a back seat to the media reports.

And Lyndon B. and Ladybird Johnson’s two daughters Luci and Lynda both celebrated their sweet 16 birthdays in the White House, too, when their dad stepped into the presidency following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Even though all of these young girls–most of them grown women now–celebrated these milestone birthdays while their famous fathers were president, times have definitely changed from Luci and Lynda Johnson to Malia Obama. The president and Mrs. Obama strive for normalcy for both Malia and sister Sasha Obama.

“They really want normalcy, and the White House isn’t normal,” Michelle Obama said during an interview with Jimmy Fallon a few months ago.

“The truth of the matter is, they have more freedom than maybe we might have anticipated,” President Obama said.

He added that he doesn’t worry as much as he thought he might–especially about the prospect of dating.

“I’ve got men with guns following them around all the time,” he told Steve Harvey a while back.

So exactly how did the Obama family celebrate Malia Obama turning 16? Well, Pitbull entertained on the White House Lawn as part of the annual 4th of July event there. That’s not a bad way for a teenager to celebrate her big day.

Can you imagine what it must be like to be a teenager in the White House? Like all the young ladies who celebrated these birthdays before her, Malia Obama doesn’t have the freedom of simply picking up her phone and arranging to meet a group of girlfriends at the mall. She can’t accept an invitation to a new friend’s home or arrange to attend a sleepover at another teen’s house. Still she is enjoying opportunities that most 16-year-olds–and many adults, too–can only dream of experiencing. She’s been privy to a wonderful wardrobe, a Pitbull concert on her south lawn, and world travels.

Life really isn’t so bad for Malia Obama. And to top it all off, since she’s now 16–she can apply for a driver’s license. Does it get any better than that?

  • Ava Sambora: Sweet 16 Blonde Reunites With Parents Heather Locklear, Richie Sambora

Looks like Heather Locklear and Richie Sambora’s daughter Ava Sambora is all grown up. The young blonde looked resplendent at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles on Friday, October 4, when she threw a lavish birthday party for her Sweet 16 birthday.

Ava wore a low cut figure hugging white dress highlighting her slender arms and neckline. Heather planted a beautiful kiss on Ava’s cheeks while the proud daddy hugged his daughter.

All three appeared in excellent spirits and were beaming gorgeous smiles throughout the event.

Ava Sambora’s celebrity parents divorced amicably in 2007 and remain good friends while raising their beautiful daughter, who is now an aspiring actress.

Ava has already scored two roles so far, one in 2012, where she debuted as Wendy in Judd Apatow’s comedy This is 40, and the other in 2013 as “future Charlie” in Good Luck Charlie TV Series.

“It was an amazing experience…everyone was so welcoming…Ever since I was five or six, I’ve wanted to be an actress…I loved attention and would always try to be onstage and in front of people. It was easy to figure out what I wanted to be…I really only get nervous in front of my family and friends, because I want to impress them…I’m very on top of it with people I don’t know,” said Ava, as she shared her experiences on the sets of Knocked Up sequel with Teen Vogue magazine.

Here is Ava when she was 10, dancing with Jon Bon Jovi and her dad Richie

“We’re very good. It’s actually even beyond for [our daughter’s] sake…We go out all the time…Heather and I really respect each other, and we’ve become better friends, I think, now that we’re not married,” said Richie Sambora, the famous songwriter and lead guitarist of rock band Bon Jovi.

Heather returned the compliments, “He is really someone who is compatible with you, and hangs in there during tough times…and good times.”

We wish the doting parents and their beautiful daughter the very best in coming years, and hope to see Ava share her talent and beautiful DNA on screen for her legions of fans.

For those of you who want to marry the young blonde, you will have to wait two more years, as the age of consent is 18 in many states.

  • Lehigh Upset By Xavier In Sweet 16

Lehigh Upset By Xavier In Sweet 16

In what is being touted as one of the biggest upsets in NCAA history, Lehigh swept their game against Duke–who had been second-seeded–last week only to lose it all on Sunday to Xavier.

The team looked good in the first half, but gave up their lead to the Musketeers after center Kenny Frease scored five straight points in the second half. The Musketeers went on to win 70-58 despite playing without their third-leading scorer, Dezmine Wells, who injured his right ankle in the first half and was out for the rest of the game.

Lehigh managed to take the loss gracefully, despite being so close to victory only to feel it slip through their fingers.

“It has been really exciting ups and downs, going from beating Duke and barely getting any sleep and then being obviously very disappointed in the way we performed,” junior forward Gabe Knutson said. “Having a chance at the Sweet 16, being that close, that’s a lot of motivation to work that much harder to get there [next year].”

  • Kendall Marshall Fractures Right Wrist

North Carolina advanced to the NCAA regional finals this weekend, but not without some battle wounds; point guard Kendall Marshall was injured during Sunday’s match against Creighton when he was fouled hard by Ethan Wragge in the second half, fracturing a scaphoid bone in his right wrist. After a timeout, Marshall continued to play–even managing to make a free throw–before taking a break. He came back in briefly but complained of pain in his wrist every time he tried to dribble with that hand, and left the game for good after scoring 18 points for the team.

“Our players have a will to win, and the last thing a player’s going to do is let a sickness or injury get in the way of a game that they want to win. So, I didn’t want to come out. Coach asked me if I wanted to, I said no, I was good. But, obviously late in the game it tested me a little bit,” Marshall said on Sunday. He later tweeted about his love for his teammates.

Early reports say Marshall will probably be able to play with a cast on his wrist, mostly because he’s left-handed, but it will be painful. The star’s father, Dennis Marshall, told CBS Sports that his son will have to have a screw inserted into the wrist and that his ability to play in Friday’s game is yet to be seen. Updates are expected early this week.

“We’ll speak to the hand specialist tonight with Kendall and his family, and we’ll see what happens after that,” UNC coach Roy Williams said after the win.

When asked to comment on the blow to one of the top-seeded teams in the country, Kentucky coach John Calipari told ESPN.com’s Andy Katz, “What I hope is that it’s not as bad as it sounds and that he can be able to play for him, for the program, and for the tournament. I can’t answer what they’ll do because this has never happened to me this late in the season. It becomes an opportunity for someone else but it can change their team.”

Twitter users certainly seem to be pulling for the point guard, as evidenced by the flood of updates about his injury and speculation on what it means for the game.
