YouTube TV Gains Dolby 5.1 on Apple TV and Fire TV

YouTube TV announced that Apple TV and Fire TV users can now enjoy Dolby 5.1 surround sound with compatible content.

YouTube TV is one of the most popular streaming TV services, but has not supported surround sound. After announcing support a year ago, and bringing the feature to Roku and its own Google TV devices in June, YouTube TV has finally added support for the Apple TV and Fire TV.

The company made the announcement in a tweet:

Netflix May Be Working On New Feature…For Apple Users

Netflix is reportedly working on a new feature that will primarily benefit Apple users with certain AirPods.

According to BGR, French-language site iPhoneSoft “claims it has learned from a US-based Netflix employee that the streaming company is currently testing spatial audio support. The feature will reportedly launch this spring with a small catalog of titles after tests are completed.”

Special audio is a type of surround sound that is specifically designed for headphones and earbuds. Unlike similar technologies, however, Apple’s implementation takes into account the movement of the user’s head — thanks to accelerometers and gyroscopes in the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max — as well as the movement of their iPhone or iPad. As a result, the sound is always in relation to the screen, giving a truer surround sound experience.

Currently, the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max are the only ones that support spacial audio. If iPhoneSoft’s claims are true, Netflix’s new feature could be one of the best showcases of the technology.

  • LG Ad Campaign Gives Us a New Outlook on Classic Movies

LG is promoting their concept of experiencing every side of sound with an ad campaign depicting classic movie posters from different angles. With LG’s new Home Theater 3D Sound System, they claim you will be able to hear the movie from different angles, why not be able to see it from different angles too.

LG’s new 9.1 surround sound systems will definitely appeal to 3D TV owners. The products claim to match the postion of 3D images with 3D sounds, using four more speakers than a traditional 5.1 surround sound system. They use an algorithm to detect the depth of effects watched in 3D, making for a “wider sweet spot” than normal.

Though I do love the excitement of hearing depth of sound while watching a movie in surround sound, 3D TV just doesn’t appeal to me. Putting on special glasses and sitting in one spot for optimal viewing and listening should be reserved for the movie theater. I’d much rather spend $10 – $12 when I see a good movie come out, than thousands of dollars to watch 3D on a smaller screen at home

As for the advertisement campaign itself, it’s brilliant. Whatever LG is paying Y&R advertising agency, they are getting their money’s worth. Classic movies always awaken a since of nostalgia and a love for cinema in all of us. And showing these old movies in a new way is raking in big bucks for distributors (Titanic 3D, The Lion King). Billing 3D surround sound as a new way to enjoy your old favorites may very well pay off for LG.
