  • Olivia Wilde Disappointed in Female Superheroes, Says They Lack Complexity

Olivia Wilde dished recently about superheroes. No, the Meadowland star isn’t thinking of donning a cape and fighting crime. Instead, she discussed with Cinema Blend what she feels is lacking in today’s female superheroes–and you just might like what she said.

“I’m a big fan of superhero films, and I have so much respect for the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” she esaid. “The thing with female superheroes is that, in order to be powerful, they are flawless. The idea of kick-a** power lacks a certain nuance, at times. There is something to be said for a female director working to create a female superhero that perhaps [has] a little more complexity.”

Olivia Wilde went on to point out some of the flaws with today’s female superheroes, as well as changes that might help portray them in a more positive light.

“Marvel has been so smart about casting unexpected people for these roles. Look at what Robert Downey brought to Iron Man,” she said. “A real, dry sense of humor and a complexity to his hero balance.”

“I think that’s the way these Marvel heroes are written, the female superheroes included, do have complexity and flaws. But I think when they are translated into film, the women can become these ultimate goddesses of perfection and I would love to create a female Marvel character who is just as unexpected and complex as some of the male characters as Iron Man. I think that would be really cool!” she added.

Olivia Wilde is gorgeous, but she is so not the goddess of perfection type.

What’s your take on Olivia Wilde’s thoughts about upping the character ante of female superheroes?

Maybe there’s a superhero role in Olivia Wilde’s future?

  • Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Aligns With ‘Captain America’

[Spoilers] Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a popular ABC television show in and of itself; however, the release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier may ultimately lead to a further promotion of the hit television show. Executive Producers Jeph Loeb and Jeffrey Bell recently spoke with TVGuide regarding the potential influence.

According to Loeb, “We hope people are watching the show. We don’t focus too much on where ratings are. That’s a network thing. We’re putting out a terrific show. Here’s the good news: By all indications, everyone is talking about what happened last [week]. We know that Captain America is an astonishingly good movie. Hopefully, you come out of that movie, even if you’ve never seen S.H.I.E.L.D., you’re scratching your head going, “Isn’t there a television show that’s about this?” Even if half the people are as mind blown as you are, it seems like there’s going to be a lot of what used to be called “watercooler talk” about this show, and that’s a good thing.”

Though the interlocking storyline between Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Captain America: The Winter Soldier may appear to flow effortlessly, Jeffrey Bell explained that a high level of collaboration was needed to achieve the coherent result.

“What’s wonderful is the Marvel movie universe is letting us play in their world. We talked with them at the beginning of what we wanted to do, which Marvel characters we wanted to tie in. They created this universe, so we’ve been talking about it with them the whole time.” Bell said before adding, “It was also why we knew from the beginning that what the movie reveals is Hydra is everywhere. If that were true, that meant it had to be true on our crew as well. It was exciting for us that, oh my God, we have a giant secret that we’re keeping all season! But it was also hard that there was a snake in the grass that we had to build in and keep that secret the whole season.”

  • Netflix Is Getting Live Action Marvel Shows (Starting With Daredevil)

Netflix Is Getting Live Action Marvel Shows (Starting With Daredevil)

Netflix and Disney just announced a new deal that will see the Marvel Universe making its way to the realm of the Netflix original series. There will be at least four different shows and a mini-series.

Marvel will develop a series focused on Daredevil first, followed by shows about the characters Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage. These will combine as one big “epic,” and culminate in a miniseries event, The Defenders. The endeavor will stretch over multiple years, and as the announcement says, take Netflix members “deep into the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell’s Kitchen, New York.”

The shows will make their way to the streaming service beginning in 2015. They’re being produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Television Studios.

Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos said, “Marvel’s movies, such as ‘Iron Man’ and Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’, are huge favorites on our service around the world. Like Disney, Marvel is a known and loved brand that travels. With ‘House of Cards’ and our other original series, we have pioneered new approaches to storytelling and to global distribution and we’re thrilled to be working with Disney and Marvel to take our brand of television to new levels with a creative project of this magnitude.”

“This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel’s brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty,” said Alan Fine, President of Marvel Entertainment. “This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what’s sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure.”

Netflix and Disney made a big movie distribution deal last year, which will see theatrically released feature films from Disney appear on Netflix starting in 2016. Netflix will be the exclusive U.S. subscription TV service for first run movies from the company, and that includes Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Disneynature and Lucasfilm.

Even more recently, Netflix and Disney made a similar deal for content in the Netherlands.

  • Marvel’s Agents Of SHIELD Gets Full Season Order

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, quite possibly the most anticipated new show of the fall batch of shows, has been picked up for a full season. This was certainly an expected move to be made, but nonetheless, fans of the new show can rejoice and know that they will be able to watch their new favorite characters for a full 22 episode season. The show’s pilot was picked up by ABC, and fans of the superhero franchise everywhere were immediately excited about the news.

The show is based on The Avengers film and comics, and in a way like never before, the show will focus on the characters that are normally ignored in the major films of the Marvel universe. It focuses on the agency that recruits the superheroes that everyone is already familiar with, such as Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and Thor. SHIELD stands for Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, and is led by Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), who works to recruit and train the younger agents. The show will follow Coulson and his new team of agents as they attempt to track down people with superhero abilities.

The cast is certainly happy about ABC’s decision and took to twitter to show their excitement.

While none of the superheroes from the films are expected to star on the show, the agency does retain its star in Clark Gregg from the films to play Agent Coulson. The show is directed by Joss Whedon, and this will mark his full broadcast season since the WB’s final season of Angel concluded in 2004, although Dollhouse aired for two short seasons on Fox. Dollhouse was cancelled early, however many fans of Whedon’s work, who also created Buffy The Vampire Slayer, adored the show during its short run on the network. Whedon is known for his show’s similarities in a number of ways, including the types of dialogue, relationships between characters, and recurring cast members.

While the Marvel comic books have inspired numerous films and earned a countless amount of money, this is the first time that the franchise has been featured on TV. The series is co-created by Joss Whedon, his brother Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen. Although none of the Marvel stars are main characters on the show, it has been stated that certain fan favorites may show up at some point during the series, and as Gregg teased to all of the fans, “Anybody could show up at any time.” Samuel L. Jackson already showed up briefly to reprise his role as Nick Fury, and Colbie Smulders, who had a small part in The Avengers, appeared briefly as Agent Maria Hill. We are guaranteed to see more of these characters throughout the show, but who will they be?

Agents Of SHIELD has already had great success with both fans and critics, opening to a incredibly high premiere of almost 12 million viewers. This made it TV’s best drama debut in four years, since ABC’s remake of the sci-fi series V, which coincidentally starred Morena Baccarin, who was also in Whedon’s cult favorite Firefly.

Stay up to date with one of the most popular new shows on television, and tune in to ABC on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. to see new episodes of Agents of SHIELD.

  • Artist Mixes Cubism And Superheroes

Well, not all of them are “super”, but the majority of James Reid’s subjects are heroes, just the same.

The New Zealand-based artist uses cubism to portray a variety of famous figures, from the Ninja Turtles to Batman. Titled “Polygon Heroes”, the series is a set of beautifully-done renderings of pop-culture good-guys, and makes you wish you’d thought of it first.

  • DC Superheroes Remade As Pixar Characters

DC Superheroes Remade As Pixar Characters

Put this under the category of “Not gonna ever happen in a hundred million years.” Some of our favorite DC superheroes have been re-imagined in the style of Pixar animation. For those of you living under a rock, Pixar is the studio responsible for films such as Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and Up. Their cute CGI character are known throughout the world for not only how cute a lot of them are, but also for how realistic they seem on screen.

A 26 year old American artist names Daniel Araya has redrawn Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the Green Lantern in that very distinct very Awww style that Pixar has become famous for. Check out his Deviant Art page for other great Pixar type stuff like Wolverine and Sabertooth, and Obi Wan! They all look great and he did a great job.

This is what he had to say about these pieces:

“A few weeks ago, just for fun I started doing concepts for a faux Justice League CG movie. I’ve always been a huge fan of Bruce Timm and the DC Timmverse he helped create, and I thought it would be cool to basically design the JLA movie that I would direct if given the chance. I didn’t do any huge drastic changes because I didn’t want to betray the characters in terms of who they are and what they’re about. I just wanted to build on what’s already been established and tweak things the way I saw them. I was going to wait until I had more artwork before I posted this, but with all the freelance I’ve got, I don’t think I’ll be able to work on this again for a while.”

Here are the 4 superheroes and a bit about them from the author:

    Superman

    (image)

    – Superman is a wholesome, good-natured guy with antiquated notions of heroism, and that’s what I like about him. He represents a more honest hero, and SO many people don’t like him because he’s too corny, or not badass enough, and I think that’s ridiculous. I hardly touched his costume at all because I wanted him to look corny and I wanted his image to reflect the dated quality of his beliefs. I really don’t like when people try to make him like, this dark, violent, angry guy just for the sake of making him cooler.

-Anyway I tried to make him primarily out of chunky square shapes, and I went as far as taking away the angles on his boots to make them a little more chunky and plain. I think he should be a big character to emphasize the fact that he’s all about IMMENSE power and protectiveness. I know a lot of people say that he shouldn’t be big because nothing would give him a workout, but I disagree because

    1) Every time I see him lift something, he looks like he’s straining real hard. Whether it’s a car, a piece of rubble, a building, it all seems to be difficult for him.

    2) The design reflecting the spirit of the character is more important to me than whether or not he’d be big in real life. He’s powerful and he’s protective, that’s what I want my design to emphasize.

    Batman

    (image)

-I wanted Batman to be composed of triangular shapes to emphasize how dangerous he is. I also didn’t want to draw him big and bulky because in my version he’s primarily an acrobat, not a bodybuilder. He’s constantly doing flips and jumping off rooftops, so he’d be extremely lean. I also gave him the more armored costume because

    1) It looks cool

    2) Having an outfit that looks more like protective gear while everyone else is wearing more “costume-y” outfits visually reinforces the fact that he’s human and mortal. It reminds us that he NEEDS this to protect him and that’s a trait that I (and I think most people) like about batman.

-I also made Batman’s skin even more pale here than in the Bruce Wayne pic to further emphasize the lack of warmth in Batman, and it also helped to add more contrast against the darkness of his suit. I like the idea of his face being that one little speck of pale, cold, humanity peeking out from this huge enveloping shroud of darkness.

    Wonder Woman

    (image)

-I went with angry, warrior, man hating Wonder Woman. I feel like if you’re raised your entire life immersed in bigotry, you’re not just going to change your beliefs after a single adventure. It’s not gonna be like “oh these guys fought with me to save the world, men aren’t so bad.” Nobody just drops prejudiced opinions like that, they skew and distort things to keep supporting and maintaining their discrimination. I feel like her acceptance of men would be a very slow, gradual thing and it would never be 100%. I was mostly inspired by Darwyn Cooke’s design with some tweaks here and there where I thought it made more sense or would add some appeal.

    Green Lantern

    (image)

-I thought it would be cool if his outfit was more of a manifestation of the ring’s power as opposed to just cloth. I think that’s the angle the live action movie is taking too, so I thought I’d do my version of that idea. I thought it would be cool if the green parts were constantly shifting, and seemed like you were looking inside some kind of unstable, nebulous energy reaction. I went with the spots because I was paying homage to that swiss cheese effect that Jack Kirby used to do whenever he drew energy.

Superheroes on the prowl would make you feel a lot safer right? What if those superheroes were made out of paper? What if they didn’t prowl around but just sit there? Would you still feel as safe? Or would you be angry that superheroes exist in real life but only as a form that disintegrates when it rains?

A dude named Grégoire Guillemin from Rochefort-en Yveline, France has had this idea before and has made a series of superhero pictures made from what seems to be construction paper. He has 2 sets of them. This set has other pictures in it but some of them are NSFW ones so if you do decide to go see them be aware!

  • DC Superheroes Promote Tourism With New Posters

Ever wondered what your favorite super heroes do when they are in costume but not saving the world? Do they only hang out in the Hall of Justice? Seems king of weird to have a bunch of people in tights sitting around and not waiting for a gymnastics meet. What if they helped their home cities promote the tourism industry?

This what Dan, a “graphic designer and lovable geek,” from London has done. He put the 5 of the greatest superheroes in the DC universe in art deco style tourism posters. I think the Wonder Woman one is funny because who would want to go to an island of all women except for men, but if men go to the island they are killed? CHeck out the posters and see for yourself if they make you want to go to those cities:
