‘Killer is Dead’ Coming to PC in May

Last summer the latest Suda51 game made its way to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Killer is Dead was released to lukewarm reviews and controversy surrounding its bawdy, quasi-misogynist “Gigolo Mode.” Even so, the game’s flashy art style and uncompromising grindhouse aesthetics gave it a cult following during a relatively slow summer game season.

Now Deep Silver is bringing Killer is Dead to the PC. The publisher today announced that the game will hit PC on May 9. It will cost only $20 and will include extra content not seen in the console version of the game.

Killer is Dead puts players into the shoes of Mondo Zappa an “executioner” and ladies man tasked with disposing of super-criminals. Mondo also has a bionic left arm that can transform into a number of different weapons.

The PC version of Killer is Dead will feature a higher “Nightmare Mode” difficulty setting. Players using that difficulty will be unable to finish off enemies using anything but the abilities Adrenaline Burst and Dodge Burst, or using a head shot. This restriction includes the quicktime event “Final Judgement” moves.

In addition to the difficulty level the PC version will include the “Smooth Operator” pre-order DLC released for the console versions and a theater mode where players can re-watch cut-scenes and try to piece together what exactly the game is about.

  • Killer is Dead Gets Launch Bonuses in the U.S.

Last week, publisher Deep Silver announced some pretty nifty collector’s editions for Killer is Dead, the upcoming game from game designer Suda51 of Lollipop Chainsaw and No More Heroes fame. The extras in the “Fan Edition” of the game included a poster, an artbook, a soundtrack, some papercraft, some salacious DLC content. Deep Silver isn’t publishing Killer is Dead in the U.S., though, so these collector’s editions are exclusive to Europe and Australia.

Luckily for U.S. gamers, however, Xseed Games will be giving away some extras with launch copies of Killer is Dead. The publisher today announced that launch copies of the game will come with the artbook, soundtrack, and “Smooth Operator” DLC that have been announced for the European collector’s editions.

“Fans have been very supportive, which we’re extremely grateful for, so everyone who has pre-ordered the game or buys it at launch will get a deluxe version for no extra charge,” said Shinichi Suzuki, president of Xseed.

The DLC includes extra costumes, a bonus mission called “The Man Who Stole Blood,” a pair of in-game “Gigolo Glasses,” and a bonus “Gigolo Mission” with a woman named Betty. What is Gigolo mode, you ask? Well, as seen in the video below, it’s a completely juvenile set of missions in Killer is Dead that sees main character Mondo Zappa seduce various women. The Gigolo Glasses enable players to get an X-ray view of the women’s undies.

Killer is Dead launches in the U.S. on August 27.

  • Killer is Dead Collector’s Editions Announced

There are only two more months before Suda51 fans can get their hands on the developer’s next crazy game, and publisher Deep Silver today announced there will be two separate collector’s editions of Killer is Dead available in Europe and Australia.

The Limited Edition of Killer is Dead comes with some DLC called the “Smooth Operator Pack.” The content includes an additional mission for the game (called “The Man Who Stole Blood”); the “Gigolo Glasses” item, which grants X-Ray vision (allowing players to “reap extra enjoyment from the beauties in Gigolo Mode”); a “mysterious beauty named Betty” for Gigolo Mode; and an unannounced item “perfect for summer.” The Limited Edition sells for £50.

The Fan Edition sells for £55 and comes with the physical goodies. In addition to the “Smooth Operator Pack” DLC, the Fan Edition comes with a poster, an art book, a soundtrack, a papercraft “diorama,” and some nicer packaging.

Also, an English version of the new trailer from a few days ago has been released. Comprehending the dialogue doesn’t particularly help the video to make any more sense:

  • New Killer is Dead Trailer Shows Off Boss Fight Gameplay

Plenty has already been seen about Killer is Dead the next game from infamous developer Goichi “Suda51” Suda (Lollipop Chainsaw, No More Heroes). Past trailers have showed off the game’s crazy art style, as well as the large-breasted women who accompany the main character, Mondo, through the game.

While most of the game’s many trailers have shown quick-cuts of gameplay, none so far have really focused on it. The latest Killer is Dead trailer is, then, a welcome change. The video shows several of the game’s boss battles, which appear to be both bloody and bizarre:

Killer is Dead follows Mondo Zappa, an “executioner” with a weaponized left arm. The James Bond-like figure seeks out criminals to put them down while romancing the various women he comes across. The game is scheduled to be released on August 27 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

  • New Killer is Dead Trailer Released

New Killer is Dead Trailer Released

The focus in the coming week will be on the dozens of next-generation games that will be announced at E3. Also, the restrictive DRM that Microsoft has (and Sony might) force on next-gen console gamers – but let’s try to stay positive and think about games for now.

While the next-gen games will look flashy in next week’s presentations, it’s the final games of this generation (as The Last of Us seems to be proving with its perfect reviews) that will show off the best that console gaming has to offer.

Suda51’s last game of this generation, Killer is Dead, looks to include all the ultra-violence and subtle (and not-so-subtle) sexuality the game director’s game’s (No More Heroes, Lollipop Chainsaw) are known for. The new trailer for the title focuses on the different villains encountered during the game, as opposed to the various barely-dressed women that were featured in a previous trailer.

  • New Killer is Dead Trailer Highlights ‘Mondo Girls’

Suda51 is well-known by gamers for creating games featuring tons of gore and not-so-subtle sexual innuendo. Games such as Shadows of the Damned and Lollipop Chainsaw revel in this type of grindhouse-style excess.

Suda’s newest game, Killer is Dead, is due out this August and looks as if it might even top Lollipop Chainsaw‘s bawdy innuendo.

Deep Silver and Grasshopper Manufacture today released a new trailer for the game featuring the various women that players will encounter during the game, dubbed “Mondo Girls.” Players will take on the role of Mondo Zappa, a James Bond-type executioner that hunts down criminals in a noir-styled world. As such, there will be plenty of seduction and skin, or at least enough to let gamers know they are playing a Suda 51 game.

  • Killer Is Dead Release Date: Sometime This Summer

Japanese publisher Kadokawa Games today announced that Killer is Dead will get a global release sometime in the summer of 2013. The title will launch for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles.

Killer is Dead is being developed by Grasshopper Manufacture, the studio headed by Goichi Suda, also known as “Suda51.” The developer is famous for quirky and unapologetically juvenile titles such as Killer 7, No More Heroes, Shadows of the Damned, and Lollipop Chainsaw.

The release window announcement is probably meant to reassure fans that the game is still on track, and hasn’t been disrupted by recent events. Yesterday it was announced that Grasshopper Manufacture has been purchased by GungHo Online Entertainment, a Japanese publisher known for the Ragnarok Online series of games.

Killer is Dead puts players into the shoes of Mondo Zappa, a James Bond-type “executioner” who is tasked with eliminating criminals in a not-to-distant noir future. He wields a katana in his right hand and his bionic left hand can become a number of interchangeable weapons. The game features a unique, contrast-heavy art style that can be seen in the first trailer for the game, which was released earlier this month:

  • Suda51 Studio Bought by GungHo Online Entertainment

GungHo Online Entertainment (GOE), a Japanese publisher, today announced that it has acquired the video game development studio Grasshopper Manufacture. GOE stated that Grasshopper Manufacture will continue to operate under that name, and that games currently under development will not be affected.

Grasshopper is headed by Goichi Suda, also well-known as “Suda51.” The studio is responsible for some of the most interesting and unapologetically juvenile video games in recent memory. Its titles include Killer7, No More Heroes, Shadows of the Damned, and Lollipop Chainsaw.

“By joining GungHo Online Entertainment, we are aligning ourselves with a strong, established publishing force that will support our vision to further create inspired new games that appeal players across the world,” said Suda, founder and CEO of Grasshopper. “The Grashopper team and I have many new ideas to share with our fans as we move forward so this union with GOE will help us realize our future plans.”

GOE is most well-known as the publisher of the Ragnarok Online games, as well as the mobile game Puzzle & Dragons.

“We believe the strength of a publisher lies in its creative talent so with the addition of Grasshopper Manufacture and Suda51 we are adding some of the most innovative talent in today’s gaming world to our stellar family of independently-operated studios,” said Kazuki Morishita, CEO of GungHo. “SUDA51 projects are known to put a unique spin on every game so coupled with our proven ability to support development with AAA resources including a tailored online experience, we believe gamers will benefit from this collaboration.”

Grasshopper just this month released a teaser trailer for its upcoming Killer is Dead. The game features a James Bond-type assassin who operates in a dark noir-styled underworld.

  • Lollipop Chainsaw Launch Trailer Released

The next twisted game from the mind of SUDA51 will hit stores this week, and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is giving gamers one last preview of all the zombie-carving mayhem with a brand-new launch trailer. The game features a high school cheerleader, Juliet, who shows up to class on her 18th birthday, only to find that the zombie apocalypse has started. Armed with her trusty pink-heart chainsaw and a suggestive cheerleader outfit, she must save the world from an invasion of zombie rock lords. It’s as grindhouse as a video game gets.

The game was created by Goichi Suda, the developer whose last game, Shadows of the Damned, perfectly illustrates his juvenile sense of humor and gameplay. While his games are often silly and crass, they are generally well-received and a blast to play. Lollipop Chainsaw looks to continue this trend with hack-and-slash combo fighting and indiscreet character animations for Juliet. Though SUDA51 directed the game, James Gunn, the writer and director famous for writing Troma movies, Slither, and the Dawn of the Dead remake, is credited as the writer for Lollipop chainsaw. SUDA51 brought in some A-list voice talent for the game, casting Tara Strong as Juliet and Michael Rooker as Vikke.

The entire project looks to be over-the-top, yet incredibly fun. It’s the type of game that is sure to spark protests from parents groups in the U.S., but it’s the exactly the type of game needed to lighten up an industry that is quickly becoming corporate and playing to an over-broad audience. Gamers burdened with the heavy stories that have been coming along recently, such as those in Mass Effect 3 and Diablo III, could use a groaning laugh and a few gallons of blood.

Take a look at the launch trailer below and prepare for the game’s release today in the U.S. and on June 15 in the UK.

  • Lollipop Chainsaw Voice Actors Announced

    Lollipop Chainsaw Voice Actors Announced

Have you heard about Lollipop Chainsaw yet? It’s the newest game from Suda51, a Japanese developer who always finds the most absurd concepts and makes them into the most compelling games. While his last game featured a crude Mexican demon hunter chasing Satan through hell, his newest game may be the strangest yet.

Lollipop Chainsaw is about a cheerleader with a magical chainsaw slicing through legions of the undead. It’s the ultimate mash up of cute and gross with hearts and flowers erupting from the zombies as they are sliced down.

Warner Bros. has so much faith in the game that they had famed horror director/writer James Gunn, who previously worked on Slither and the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake. He will be writing the script for this game and collaborating with the genius mind of Suda51 to make this the best game it can possibly be.

The newest trailer released this morning announces the amazing range of voice talent that will bringing the game to life. The lead role of Juliet Starling will be performed by Tara Strong who has voiced numerous roles in games and animation over the years including Harley Quinn from last year’s Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Michael Rosenbaum, who you may know as the actor who played Lex Luthor in Smallville, will be performing the role of Nick. He’s Juliet’s boyfriend who has been reduced to a talking head.

One of the more interesting casting choices is Jimmy Urine as Zed, one of the zombie leaders. Fans will know Urine as the front man of the band Mindless Self Indulgence. He will be composing some of the music for the game’s soundtrack as well.
