  • Scott Stapp’s Wife Files for Divorce

The wife of embattled former Creed frontman Scott Stapp filed for divorce last month, and asked a judge in Palm Beach County, Florida to have the singer admitted to a substance abuse treatment facility.

Jaclyn Stapp filed legal documents for divorce proceedings, dictating that Stapp threatened to kill himself and his AA sponsor, that he threatened to harm his family, that he owns guns, hears voices in his head and has visions of people on fire. Jaclyn reportedly added that Stapp’s problems stem from a drug binge of steroids, pot, cocaine, PCP, Special K, crystal meth and various prescription drugs.

Jason Brodie, Jaclyn Stapp’s attorney, remarked, “It is a very painful and personal matter for the family.”

Brodie added, “Jaclyn loves Scott very much. It is now apparent the seriousness of Scott’s health. Jaclyn has taken all the necessary steps to help him. She previously arranged for the appropriate treatment and will continue to try and help him. Her primary concern remains the best interest of their children. Jaclyn asks for privacy for her and her children during this difficult time.”

Stapp meanwhile has launched a Fundly campaign, in order to raise money for his third solo album, and a novel. So far the rocker has generated $612, of the $480,000 he is asking for.

Stapp was recently in the news after posting a 15-minute video on Facebook, which has since been deleted, detailing his financial issues and his present lack of infrastructure. Stapp claimed he was “penniless,” and living in a hotel.

    Stapp’s second video statement:

Stapp, who said he was “as sober as can be,” commented via social media, “During the course of that audit a lot of things were uncovered,” said Stapp. “A lot of money was stolen from me or royalties not paid, and that’s when all hell began to break loose. So I think you guys are smart enough to put two and two together. There are people who have taken advantage and stolen money from me and they’re trying to discredit me, slander me.”

Stapp later deleted his videos, and a statement posted Friday said the singer is “going to step back and let God control everything from here on.”

“I should have continued to do that before I allowed my hurt, frustration and emotions take control and post those videos,” the statement added.

Stapp, 41, gained notoriety as the lead singer and lyricist of the Christian rock band Creed, which sold roughly 40 million records worldwide. Stapp won a Grammy for the Creed song “With Arms Wide Open,” and released two solo albums.

  • Michael Irvin’s Wife Becomes Center of Feud

On Saturday, life couldn’t have gotten much worse for Cleveland Browns wide receive Josh Gordon. The 2014 NFL-leading receiver was arrested for a DWI in Raleigh, North Carolina after initially being pulled over for speeding. Normally, a DWI wouldn’t be a huge offense for an NFL star. However, this is not Gordon’s first run-in with the police. Gordon has suffered from substance abuse addictions for some time now, failing multiple drug tests while in college at Baylor and during his short stint in the NFL.

In response to Gordon’s recent struggles, former NFL wide receiver and current analyst Chris Carter had some advice as to what the Cleveland Browns should do in order to combat Gordon’s struggles with drugs: “He loves football more than anything, so I would take that away. When I say they should cut him, I say that because I believe that will be the catalyst to help. When you’re falling in life, at some point you have to make a bottom floor and say ‘this is it for me. I’m going to establish my house on this right here. And I’m going to build up.”

Carter’s advice stems from his personal experiences with substance abuse. In 1990, Carter was cut from the Philadelphia Eagles due to his inability to stop using drugs. Carter believes that being cut was the sole reason he was able to kick his addiction and become a Hall of Fame receiver.

While many people would agree with Carter’s analysis, another Hall of Famer took exception to Carter’s words of wisdom.

In speaking on the “Dan Le Batard Show” on ESPN Radio Tuesday, former Dallas Cowboy’s wide receiver Michael Irvin had a few, choice words for Chris Carter and his advice:

You know, I love Cris Carter and he’s a good dude and I know what he’s trying to do and he’s doing his job because his job is to bring his experience to the desk, to a microphone, and share his experiences. But he’s touching these lines, just like I’m touching when I’m trying to help guys, and you’re on TV. You have to toe a thin line here, you have to toe a very thin line. People consider you, like, you talked to Josh so you must know more. If you said they need to cut him, then my god, maybe they should cut him. Now, isolation for Cris may have been the best thing. Separation, for Cris, may have been the best thing. For Josh, maybe it’s the worst thing and I’m going to put a little personal on this even though I love Cris to death. I don’t know what year it was we were in the Pro Bowl. And all Cris is trying to do, he’s just trying to share his experiences. He said to my wife — he said to my wife –you know, Michael would never come out of this problem until you leave him. Till you leave him. For years, I’ve held it. I’ve never shared that with anybody. I’ve never in my life shared that with anybody. I was so irked with Cris because he was out of line then. His ass is out of line now. He is out. of. line.

To add more insult to injury for Carter, Irvin and his wife, Sandy Harrell, have been married now for 24 consecutive years, even though Irvin was suspended from his ESPN analyst job in 2005 for minor drug possession charges.

At the end of the day, the only person to judge what is right for Josh Gordon is Josh Gordon. However, one thing is for certain – Chris Carter should check himself before he wrecks himself.

  • Keith Urban Feels Very Blessed For Nicole Kidman

Keith Urban may seem like he has it all. Not only does he having a stunning wife, he also serves as a judge for the number one American music competition American Idol, and has an extremely successful career as a country music superstar.

However, his life hasn’t always been full of bliss. During a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Keith opened up about his struggle with substance abuse and how his wife Nicole Kidman helped intervene when he was spiraling out of control.

Urban and Kidman married in 2006, and hit one of the lowest points of their marriage not long after. Shortly after the couple said their nuptials, Keith checked himself into a rehab facility.

“I was very, very blessed to have Nic call an intervention on me. I had a tight group of friends around me for the intervention,” Keith revealed. “I didn’t give a shit about anything except turning a corner in my life and doing whatever it took for that. And off I went.”

Keith’s decision to go to a treatment facility fell around the same time as his album Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing was scheduled to be released.

“The first thing that I think about with this record is how everything’s about to come undone, not long after this [cover] picture was taken, actually. I’m already in a bit of trouble,” Urban explained. “We shot this over in England where Nic was doing something at the time. I think we were mixing [the album] to coincide with her being there.”

“I wasn’t in any recovery program of any sort. I wasn’t in AA. I didn’t have a sponsor,” he added. “I didn’t have anything. Meeting Nic and falling in love with Nic and starting a relationship with Nic became — I realize now in hindsight — my sobriety. That was how I was able to keep it together.”

Keith didn’t make the decision to go to rehab lightly. He put a lot of thought into it, and then put his whole heart into the treatment program. While in treatment, Keith even won the CMA award for Male Vocalist of the Year, and didn’t even realize it. That is how focused he was on getting better.

“I was very ready [for rehab],” Keith said. “I remember having been in rehab a few weeks, and the CMAs happened while I was in there. I forgot they were on. That’s how much I had gotten into this recovery.”

“I had gone to bed and I remember our night tech coming in and him saying, ‘You just won something. Male vocalist? CMAs or something?’ And I was like, ‘Really?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, off to bed,’ and he shut the door,” he explained. “And I said to my roommate, ‘Hey, I just won Male Vocalist of the Year,’ and he’s like, ‘That’s awesome.’ I just lay there in the dark going, ‘How weird is this?’”

Since Keith’s stint in rehab, his marriage to Nicole has remained stronger than ever. They welcomed their first child Sunday Rose in 2010, and then their second child Faith Margaret in 2012.

  • Powdered Alcohol Not Approved by Feds

Powdered Alcohol Not Approved by Feds

It was previously reported that powdered alcohol, or Palcohol, had been approved by the U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau. Now the federal government said Monday that the label approval was done in “error.”

The approval was granted on April 8, though has since been rescinded. “TTB did approve labels for Palcohol,” the Bureau said in a statement. “Those label approvals were issued in error and have since been surrendered.”

Lipsmark, the company that produces Palcohol said in their own statement that “there seemed to be a discrepancy on our fill level, how much powder is in the bag. This doesn’t mean that Palcohol isn’t approved. It just means that these labels aren’t approved. We will re-submit labels.” Palcohol can be mixed with water to create an intoxicating beverage, and can also be sprinkled on food after it’s cooked.

The creator of “Pal,” Mark Phillips, asks, “What’s worse than going to a concert, sporting event, etc. and having to pay $10, $15, $20 for a mixed drink with tax and tip. Are you kidding me?! Take Palcohol into the venue and enjoy a mixed drink for a fraction of the cost.” Though the TTB likely sees the product as a potential harbinger of a public health cataclysm.

Palcohol’s site originally explained the potential of misuse of the product, in a manner surely to turn off substance abusers everywhere – “Let’s talk about the elephant in the room….snorting Palcohol. Yes, you can snort it. And you’ll get drunk almost instantly because the alcohol will be absorbed so quickly in your nose. Good idea? No. It will mess you up. Use Palcohol responsibly.”

Phillips had initially been attempting to keep his invention under the radar, though was recently prompted to adjust some of the wording on his website. “We are excited by the approval of our powdered alcohol product, Palcohol. However, we were caught off guard with the release of some of our labels by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). As a result, people visited this website that we thought was under the radar because we had not made a formal announcement of Palcohol.”

  • Man-On-Car Murder Sentencing Postponed

    Man-On-Car Murder Sentencing Postponed

A California woman who drove two miles while drunk through the Los Angeles suburb of Torrance with a dying man on her windshield has had her sentencing for murder charges postponed.

Substance-abuse counselor Sherry Lynn Wilkins, 52, was found guilty by a jury of second-degree murder, drunken driving and hit-and-run for the accident that killed 31-year-old Phillip Moreno in Torrance in November, 2012. Wilkins faces 45 years to life in prison, and was to be sentenced today.

The sentence had become so substantial, as Wilkins had committed two previous felonies, which makes her eligible to fall under California’s three strikes law. Prosecutors had said Wilkins’ hitting of Moreno “struck at human dignity,” and noted that her blood alcohol level at the time of the incident was over twice the legal limit.

Though, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said today’s scheduled sentencing of Wilkins will be postponed until June. No details concerning the change of schedule were provided.

Wilkins, a self-proclaimed recovered addict, had said she’d been “self-medicating” due to a knee replacement surgery, and that she wasn’t drunk, just buzzed. She’s consumed 3 shots a vodka and a Budweiser beer and Clamato before getting behind the wheel, and ended up hitting Moreno with such force that his shoes came off, and he’d became embedded in her windshield. Other drivers noticed, swarmed her car, and took her keys before police arrived at the scene.

After the guilty verdict was read, Deputy District Attorney John Harlan commented, “We do not tolerate someone who does not pull over when they see someone on their windshield.”

Wilkins had testified that she never saw Moreno, and it was as if he’d fallen out of the sky.

  • Chiara de Blasio, Daughter of NY Mayor-elect, Admits to Drug Abuse

The daughter of New York City Mayor-elect, Bill de Blasio, has recently revealed her substance abuse and clinical depression in a YouTube video confession posted on Christmas Eve.

Chiara de Blasio, 19, admitted to suffering from both during her entire adolescence. In a well-crafted and professional video produced by her father’s staff, she explains how drinking and smoking marijuana carried on into college.

During Mr. De Blasio’s campaign, there was speculation of his daughter’s history of drug and alcohol abuse, but the family made sure to shield all details during the candidacy.

The video confession comes at a time where the meaning of family is even more important than any other time of the year. So, it may have been an ideal time to show others that even those related to politicians go through the same struggles as every day people.

De Blasio mentions how she used substances as a way to connect with people around her that she wouldn’t have been able to otherwise.

Her reason for speaking out about her struggle was to inform those who are suffering and dying from the disease every day that they are not alone.

She doesn’t mention her parent’s identities directly, but still references how they have been committed in helping her recover.

Now that she has received help, she wants to continue to help others as well.

“It’s just important for people to realize, anybody who is watching this, that if you’re suffering and if you’re depressed, you’re dealing with mental illness, and you think that it might have something to do with your drug abuse or drinking, or if you’re just suffering from both of those at the same time and you think that they’re completely unrelated to one another, getting sober is always a positive thing,” she said in the video.

  • Mayor of New York’s Daughter – Doing Drugs?

The New York Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio’s 19 year old daughter, Chiara de Blasio, has explained to the world in a YouTube video released today, Christmas Eve, about her struggles with drugs, alcohol and depression most of her life.

Rumors have been circling the city about possible substance abuse for months with her father’s campaign doing constant damage control.

Explaining her struggles as “bartering for equally bad outcomes,” Chiara said: “I’d be like, ‘Oh I won’t drink, and then I would just like smoke weed, and then I would be like, ‘Oh, I’m not going to smoke weed, and then I’d just drink,” Chiara says in the video.

Ms. de Blasio said she had sought treatment for her struggles and had gone to a group therapy treatment center in New York.

“Getting sober is always a positive thing. And it’s not easy. … It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done. But it’s so worth it,” Chiara says directly to the camera, as somber music plays in the background. In it, she talking about her clinical depression and use of marijuana and alcohol.

In a statement, Bill de Blasio and his wife Chirlane called their daughter’s decision to share her story “courageous,” and noted that the holidays can be particularly difficult times for people struggling with the issues she did.

“As parents, our instinct has been to protect our daughter and privately help her through a deeply personal struggle,” the de Blasios said. “But not only has Chiara committed to her own health, she is also committed to helping young people everywhere who face similar challenges.”

  • Brandon Browner, Seahawks Cornerback, Suspended Indefinitely

Brandon Browner, a member of the Seattle Seahawks, has been targeted again for refusing to comply with the NFL’s policy against drug abuse for players. Browner was already set to serve a lengthy suspension for breaking the NFL rules, although now it looks to be even more serious.

While it was originally reported that Brandon Browner’s latest offense would only be punishable by a one year suspension, the NFL has changed their ruling to suspend him indefinitely.

With it being unclear when Browner will ever return to the NFL, it is likely that when he does, he will not be playing for the Seahawks.

As Browner has been a problem in the past, the Seahawks have no neeed to tolerate his behavior anymore, as the best team in the league.

He was scheduled to be a free agent in March, and based on speculation that had been going around the league, the Seahawks had not been planning to re-sign him.

As a member of the toughest defense in the league and the “Legion Of Boom,” he came to Seattle in 2011, and was also named to the 2011 Pro Bowl.

This is not the first time that Brandon Browner has violated the rules that are set to by the NFL against the use of drugs, but it may be the last. He was punished using performance enhancing drugs last season, which caused him to miss the final four games, but this time, it was reported that he has been using marijuana.

The ironic part of the situation is that marijuana is actually legal in the state of Washington where Browner plays. Is the indefinite suspension necessary? Discuss.

With the updated report, it seems that he is out for the season, and his career might be over as well. Speaking on the situation, Brandon Browner said “Although I disagree with the circumstances surrounding my suspension, I accept responsibility for all of my actions and I apologize for any that causes any unflattering reflections of my family and the Seahawks.” He also said that he believes that he is innocent, and plans to use his available legal resources to prove it.

The loss of Brandon Browner does not seem to be hurting the Seattle Seahawks yet, and they are 9-1 in the 10 games that he has missed. In the middle of his talks of suspension he has also been injured, and missed the last four games due to injury.

  • Smoking, Drug Use Doubles Stillbirth Risks

Smoking, Drug Use Doubles Stillbirth Risks

Its been known for years now that pregnant women smoking and imbibing other harmful substances can put their fetus risk. A new study today shows just how serious that risk can be.

The study, published in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, shows that smoking and illegal drug use more than doubles the risk of a stillbirth. This applies not just to tobacco smoke, but to marijuana as well.

“Smoking is a known risk factor for stillbirth, but this analysis gives us a much clearer picture of the risks than before,” said Dr. Uma Reddy, senior author of the study and a researcher at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). “Additionally, results from the latest findings also showed that likely exposure to secondhand smoke can elevate the risk of stillbirth.

“With the legalization of marijuana in some states, it is especially important for pregnant women and health care providers to be aware that cannabis use can increase stillbirth risk.”

The study found that tobacco use by pregnant women increases the risk of stillbirth anywhere from 1.8 to 2.8 times, depending on how heavy the smoking is. Twenty percent of the women in the study tested positive for nicotine late in their pregnancies – double the ten percent of women who did not experience stillbirth and tested positive for nicotine.

Second hand tobacco smoke exposure meant a 2.1 ties greater risk of stillbirth, and Marijuana use correlated to 2.3 times greater risk of stillbirth. Women who had used marijuana, stimulants, or prescription painkillers were found to have a 2.1 times greater risk of stillbirth.

The study looked at women who had experienced stillbirth at hospitals across the U.S. Stillbirth in the study was defined as when a a fetus dies at or after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Researchers tested blood samples and the umbilical cords of these women, looking for the chemical byproducts of nicotine and other drugs.

  • Brandon Browner, Of The Seattle Seahawks, Receives One Year Suspension

Another NFL star has been slammed with a suspension. Brandon Browner, a defensive player for the Seattle Seahawks, will serve a one year suspension from the team, due to his violation of the team’s substance abuse policy.

Brandon Browner is a cornerback for the Seahawks, and due to his breaking of the rules that are set by the NFL, as well as the team, he will be forced to serve a lengthy suspension.

It is likely that he will be dropped from the time after the news is confirmed, since this will be his second suspension for violation of the league’s substance abuse policy. He was using performance enhancing drugs last season, which caused him to miss the final four games, but this time, it was reported that he has been using marijuana.

Before the announcement of his second violation, Browner had already been placed on the injured reserve list. It was already questionable whether he would be able to return this season, and now that he has violated the substance abuse policy, it is official that fans will not be able to see him return to the field any time soon.

He will also become a free agent as of March, and it was likely that that the Seahawks would not be re-signing him anyway, based on speculation that had been going around the league. It seems almost certain at this point that the Seahawks will move on without Browner, a player that came to Seattle in 2011, and was named to the 2011 Pro Bowl.

In addition to Brandon Browner, another cornerback for the Seahwawks, Walter Thurmond, was suspended for four games, which was also due to marijuana usage.

Following the second violation by Brandon Browner, this marks the sixth Seahawks player to be suspended for a drug violation since 2011.

Bradon Browner has violated the league’s substance abuse policy for a second time, and this time it carries a very serious suspension along with it, and will likely get him dropped from the team as well.

  • Internet Gambling and Substance Use Linked

With the click of a mouse or touch of a mobile phone screen gambling is now at our fingertips 24/7 with Internet play. With this increased access to gambling, are online gamblers more prone to risky behaviors than offline gamblers?

A study published in Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking, led by Sylvia Kairouz of Concordia University, has compared people who gamble offline only to people who also gamble online in an effort to answer this question. Her results show that alcohol and cannabis use are in fact associated with online users.

“There has been growing concern with the rise in online gambling and how this affects the health of our public,” says Kairouz, professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and member of the Centre for Research on Human Development. “The number of gambling sites around the globe have grown from about 15 in 1995 to 2,358 in 2010 and global Internet gambling revenues increased from $3 billion to $24 billion between 2000 and 2010.”

Kairouz’s study looked at sociodemographic profiles, game-play patterns and level of addictive behaviours in adults who gamble online and offline. They used data from the 2009 Quebec gambling survey, which aimed to describe gambling problems, patterns and associated substance use behaviours in the Quebec population. From this survey, a sampling of 8,456 offline-only gamblers and 111 offline/online gamblers was chosen for the research.

In gathering the samples, it was revealed that online gambling appears to still only be a marginal phenomenon in the Quebec population, with only 1.3 per cent reporting having gambled online in the 12 months preceding the survey.

For the study, the gamblers were asked to report their gambling frequency over the past year and to give the number of times they gambled weekly, monthly or yearly. They were also asked to report how much money and time they spent gambling on a typical occasion. Alcohol and cannabis use over the year was also measured.

“Our results show that online gamblers reported being involved in more types of gambling and they spent more money and time playing than those gambling offline only,” says Kairouz. “The proportion of frequent and problematic drinkers and cannabis users was also much higher among the Internet players.”

According to Kairouz, these findings suggest that online gambling emerges as one more risky behaviour among a panoply of other substance-related risky behaviours exhibited by this small group of individuals.

“We cannot determine, therefore, whether gambling on the Internet creates problems in and of itself, or whether those who already have addictive behaviours are more likely to be enticed to gamble on the Internet,” says Kairouz. “We need to conduct more research looking at individual charactersitics, environmental conditions, the object of the addiction (poker, for example) and so on to help us understand whether this group is more at risk for gambling-related problems. The hope would be to ultimately find ways to identify who the people at risk are, why they are at risk and then try to develop preventive measures to reduce the possibility of excessive online gambling.”

  • “The Situation” In Rehab For Substance Abuse

Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino, one of the stars of the MTV reality show “Jersey Shore” has reportedly entered rehab for substance abuse. A rep for Sorrentino told TMZ in a statement that they would not confirm why he is there, saying only that he “has spent the past several weeks at an undisclosed location for much needed rest and recuperation after his extensive production and appearance schedule.”

The 30-year old reality star has spent the past two years–and five seasons–partying while filming the hit show, which puts eight people in a Shore house for the summer to film their antics. While the cast members are expected to “work” at a Jersey Shore t-shirt shop, most of their time is filled drinking, fighting, hooking up with other Shore vacationers (and each other) and going out to clubs. Outside of filming, the cast members regularly appear at parties and nightclubs and charge outrageous fees to do so; Sorrentino is rumored to collect between $15,000 and $50,000 per appearance.

All that partying must take a toll sometime, even to veterans like the Sitch.

The show is expected to start filming a sixth season this summer, even though regular cast member Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi is pregnant. She and Jenni “J-Woww” Farley are working on a “Jersey Shore” spinoff, and Pauly D already has his own project on MTV, which premieres on March 29th. With so many of the cast members doing their own thing, and with Sorrentino in a sensitive position, fans are wondering if the next season of “Jersey Shore” could be the last.

Sorrentino recently tweeted that TMZ falsely reported the story, however, giving fans hope that the show will go on.
