  • Student Hospitalized After Being Stuck Between Buildings for Two Days

An NYU student reported missing over the weekend has been found. 19-year-old Asher Vongtau was found trapped in a crawl space between two buildings on Sunday evening. After emergency responders rescued him, the student was taken to the hospital where he remains in serious, but stable condition.

Vongtau’s friends say he went missing late Friday night after a fire alarm went off in his dorm building. Instead of running out with everyone else, Vongtau’s friend says he was spotted running towards up the stairs. “I just know I saw him frantically running back up the stairs while people were exiting the building to leave because the fire alarm had been pulled,” said Colin Chenel.

It wasn’t much later that the young man’s friends realized he never showed back up. After Vongtau didn’t respond to texts or phone calls, they reported him missing about 18 hours later. “We went door-to-door asking people what they knew about him, and one person told us they had seen him heading upstairs, so we went to security and said, ‘Hey guys, you need to go on the roof and search the roof,’” said classmate Michael Yablon.

The student’s friends claim that campus security did nothing to help until Sunday afternoon. “Had we not told the security guards, the three of us 19 year old students, to check the roof, they would not have found him for who knows how long and he would probably be dead right now,” Yablon told WCBS.

After police and other officials began looking for Vongtau, the search eventually made it to the roof, where someone heard Vongtau moaning. The fire department was called in and they determined that Vongtau fell in a space between the dorm building and a parking garage. Vongtau was reportedly wedged in an 18-inch crevice:

The emergency responders had to cut through a concrete wall (image below) to get him out. “Our squad company was on the roof of the parking garage and were able to lower breathing apparatus down to him to keep the victim on air while we tried to extricate him,” Fire Chief Joseph Schiralli said.

Vongtau was taken to the hospital after being rescued and treated for broken bones and other injuries. According to the teen’s mother, Habiba Vongtau, he has “broken bones, arm, and contusions, and cracked, I think fractured pelvis.” Despite the injuries, his mother says he is in “stable condition.”

  • Student Banned From Graduation Due To Facebook Photo

There have been a lot of stories in the press lately relating to schools and social media incidents with their students, such as the high school student who was expelled for saying the “F” word. Now, a similar story has been making the viral waves of a high school girl who will not graduate with her friends due to a photo of her in a bikini that was posted on Facebook.

In the Philippines, a Catholic high school made the decision to bar one of their students (name not released due to her being a minor) who posted a photo on Facebook of her in a bikini holding a cigarette and a bottle of liquor at a family outing. The reason that the school (St. Theresa’s College) made this decision was because it was against their teachings. According to St. Theresa’s student handbook, a section does state “posing and uploading pictures on the Internet that entail ample body exposure” does violate the school’s conduct.

With this decision, the student may still be allowed to graduate; however, she will not be allowed to participate in the commencement ceremony with her fellow classmates. Because of this photo, four other girls who were involved also fell victim to the same decision.

Does she deserve this? Leave your opinion here.

This decision made by St. Theresa’s ended up in court after the girl’s mother ruled to have this fully negated. Another statement was made in court that the school had verbally labeled the girls as: disgusting, cheap, and drunkards. (Source: ZDNet).

There has been various reaction from the Twitter community about this story:

  • Student Arrested For Filming Buildings In London

You have to watch this video of a young Italian student who is harassed and subsequently arrested by London police that were claiming she was committing activity suspicious of being terrorist and riding a bicycle on the wrong side of the street. It is very obvious from the footage that the officer is merely seeking to belittle the student and take advantage of his power as an officer of the law. It’s a totally appalling display by someone who doesn’t possess the intelligence to be in the position he is in to begin with; high school bully grows up and gets a job.

Simona Bonomo, the student involved, spent five hours in a jail cell, at which time they told her she could be released if she agreed to an 80 pound fine. She left the jail and returned to the arrest site to see if she could get an account from witnesses.

    Watch the video:

Soon after her arrest, Bonomo was compelled to take legal action against the officer who arrested her and the police department. She hired an attorney and filed a lawsuit. Apparently this was too much to take for the officer involved and the police department, because they chose to pay her off in a settlement rather than allowing the case to continue and be heard in the courts.

Bonomo comments on the settlement and the actions taken by the police involved:

“I am pleased with the settlement but money alone does not erase what happened and I am left with consternation that the systems in place to protect citizens from police brutality do not work,”

Hopefully this will cause the police-force to rethink their policies on arresting people who have done nothing wrong. Officials should realize that if they abuse their power it can be taken away. It’s sad to see people victimized in this fashion.
